POSTGRADUATE COURSES: GENERAL INFORMATION

N.B. It is important that students know the general University regulations and the Faculty regulations that apply to their studies. 1.1 General University regulations The general University regulations that apply to all students and faculties are set out in the University Calendar Book. 1.2 Faculty regulations Faculty regulations that relate specifically to the degrees offered by the Faculty of the Humanities are in this book. 1.3 Degrees offered The three levels of postgraduate qualifications offered by the Faculty of the Humanities are (1) Baccalaureus Artium Honores (B.A.Hons.), Baccalaureus Societatis Scientiae Honores (B.Soc.Sc.Hons.), (2) Magister Artium (M.A.), Magister Societatis Scientiae (M.Soc.Sc.), and (3) Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.). 1.4 General admission requirements to postgraduate courses As a general rule, students are admitted to postgraduate studies and to each higher level of postgraduate study only if they fulfil the university requirements for registration, have completed the preliminary degree with a mark of 60% or more, and are accepted to the course they wish to study by the Head of Department. 1.5 The B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degrees Unless otherwise specified, the B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Hons. degrees are a one-year full-time or a two-year part-time study in a particular field. In general, the degrees require students to select and study courses for examination, and to research and write a short mini-dissertation. In general, too, the B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. form the first year of the two-year structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. degrees. The specific details of each course differ, and students must acquaint themselves carefully with the requirements of the course they choose.

1.6 The M.A. and M.Soc.Sc. degrees Students generally have a choice between (1) a two-year structured M.A. and M.Soc.Sc. and (2) an M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation. (1) The two-year, full-time, structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. require students to select and study courses for examination, and to research and write a mini-dissertation. In general, students can register for the structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. degree immediately after completing the B.A./B.Soc.Sc. degree, with the B.A.Hons./B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degree as an "exit" at the end of the first year. (2) The M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation requires students to write a substantial research essay on a topic agreed upon with the Head of Department or a supervisor he appoints. In certain courses a number of articles published in accredited journals is accepted instead of a dissertation. As the specific requirements of courses differ, students must acquaint themselves carefully with the requirements of the course they choose. 1.7 The Ph.D. degree Unless otherwise specified, a Doctorate is awarded to a M.A./M.Soc.Sc. graduate who writes a research thesis of noteworthy substance. In certain courses a body of published or publishable articles is accepted instead of a thesis. Students must acquaint themselves with the specific requirements of their course.

1. EVALUATION Students are evaluated continuously in tutorial classes, seminars, practical sessions and public performances; and on any written work which may include essays, articles and dissertation. 2. CURRICULUM Students must choose between option 1 and option 2 in the second year of study. Both years of the course have (1) a compulsory module; and (2) a limited-option part in which students must choose from a table of modules. Students who register for the M.A. (Drama and Theatre Arts) degree but complete only the first year of the course will be awarded the B.A.Hons. (Drama and Theatre Arts). If a student already have an appropriate B.A.Hons. qualification, the student can enter the course in the second year of study.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME FOR LANGUAGE PRACTICE

The Postgraduate Programme for Language Practice offers a Diploma, and a Master's degree. Students specialize in any one of six fields: (1) Translation (2) Interpreting (3) Lexicography and Terminology (4) Language Management (5) Language Technology and (6) Document Design and Text Editing The presentation of modules is subject to the availability of lecturers. 1. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The postgraduate courses in Language Practice are market-driven and outcomes-based. The career opportunities for students completing the courses include those of translator, conference interpreter, lexicographer, terminologist, language planner and manager, and language technologist. ADMISSION TO THE COURSES; THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DIPLOMA AND THE M.A. DEGREE As a rule, students must fulfil the requirements of 1.4 of the General Information. These requirements are relaxed as a wide range of Bachelor's degrees are considered appropriate for admission to courses in the Language Practice Programme. Students must apply to the Director, who may admit them to the Programme subject to the taking of additional modules. The Diploma is the equivalent of the first year of the Master's degree. For this reason, students registered for the Diploma who wish to continue may be admitted to the second year of the Master's degree, and students registered for the Master's degree may "exit" with a Diploma if they wish to discontinue studies after completing the first year of the Master's degree. 2.

INFORMATION The aim of this full-time two-year course is to train the student so that after the successful completion of the course he/she will able to register at the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as psychologists in the category Clinical Psychology. Your attention is drawn to the fact that the format of the postgraduate programme in professional training in psychology is still under discussion nationally and that the final compilation of this programme is subject to a joint decision by the Professional Board for Psychology and

the Committee on Higher Education. No final exposition is currently available and students are therefore advised to read for the following degrees. INFORMATION The aim of this full-time two-year course is to train the student so that after the successful completion of the course he/she will be able to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as psychologists in the category Counselling Psychology . The training programme is compiled in accordance with the regulations of the HPCSA by the Department of Psychology in association with the training institution where the internship takes place. Due to the limited number of candidates that can be admitted to the master's study in Counselling Psychology, selection takes place. A student will be considered for selection if he/she has already obtained the honours degree in Psychology or the B.Psych. degree or is enrolled for it. Applications for selection and admission must be submitted on the prescribed form. Selection takes place during the third term of each year and the course commences in January of the following year. Interested students from other universities must submit their honours syllabuses to the head of department for approval. Application forms and further information may be obtained from the Head, Department of Psychology, UFS. REGULATIONS 1. ADMISSION (a) The general regulations with respect to master's degrees apply mutatis mutandis to this degree. (b) Students of this university who have not interrupted their studies, must apply for admission to the department head concerned. (c) Students who interrupted their studies and students from other universities must apply for admission directly to the Department of Academic Student Services.

(d) Admission is subject to approval from the head of department and is granted on the basis of satisfactory academic performance at Honours/fourth year level. 2. EXAMINATION Examination takes place at the end of each academic year and may be a written and/or an oral examination. Apart from the examination, the candidate must complete an approved internship successfully, and submit a mini-dissertation or one publishable article at the end of the second year of study. As far as the Ph.D. degree in Psychology is concerned, a thesis (SIL900) or at least five publishable articles (SIL905) are required; or else the following curriculum with course work may be taken: Ph.D. in Child Psychology. 2.1 Ph.D. Degree by thesis This course is aimed at preparing students to initiate, complete and write up research of high quality on topical issues. (See Reg. B122)

Entrance is subject to approval from the head of the department and is determined by consistent academic achievement at the master's level and acceptance of a research proposal. 2.2 Ph.D. Degree in Child Psychology This course is aimed at advanced scientific training, so that after successful completion, the student will be able to act as a specialist in the field of Child Psychology. Only a limited number of candidates will be admitted to this doctoral programme. A student will be considered for selection if he/she has already obtained a master's degree in Clinical Counseling or Educational Psychology, and has had approximately five years of experience in the field of child psychology/child practice. Applications for selection and admission must be submitted on the prescribed form. Interested students must submit their master's degree syllabuses to the Ph.D. Committee for approval. The course-work extends over two years. Of students will be expected to attend these lectures. The research (thesis) section of the course is completed during the third year of study. 4. ASSESSMENT The assessment for SIL901 and SIL902 consists of a continuous evaluation of papers presented during the academic year, as well as written and/or oral examinations at the end of the year. A sub-minimum of 50% must be achieved in each separate module. An external examiner will be assigned to each examination. In addition, the candidate must complete a thesis of limited scope or three articles, at the completion of the study. The thesis/articles must deal with an appropriate topic in Child Psychology, chosen in consultation with the departmental Research Committee. With the consent of the Head of Department and the Dean, the thesis may be submitted at a later date on condition that the general regulations concerning the submission of theses (cf. General Regulation A116) apply. In calculating the final pass mark for the degree, the student must pass all three modules. The degree certificate will be endorsed Ph.D. in Child Psychology.
