Ramblers pull out pair of close LMC wins

Balanced attack gets the job done
By Chris Fiel

Boyne City 60, East Jordan 59

BOYNE CITY A tale of two
halves.
The Boyne City boys basketball
team overcame a 16-point halftime deficit as they came back
against a red hot East Jordan
team to escape with 60-59 Lake
Michigan Conference victory on
December 17.
The contest started with both
teams missing shots before
Boynes Ryan Carson rebounded
a missed layup and in one motion
slammed it home to give the Ramblers a 2-0 lead about a minute
into the contest. That would be
all the BC scoring for a while as
East Jordan reeled off eight
straight points to take a 8-0 lead
as the Red Devil guards, Noah
Bacchus and Donnie Cutler drove
their way to the basket.
East Jordan would close out the
quarter with another burst to
lead 17-8.
The Red Devils would continue
to navigate the Boyne defense
and get what seemed to be whatever shot selection they wanted
during the first half of the second quarter. EJ would take their
biggest lead of the night, 30-10 on
a triple from sophomore Jordan
Weber with 4:40 remaining in the
half.
Boyne would battle back to pull
within 16 points, 36-20 headed
into intermission.
The Ramblers would open the
second half with a three from
Corey Redman to pull to 36-23, followed by a Zach Napont threepoint play on a drive from the top
of the key and then a pair of
jumpers from Cole Butler would
bring Boyne to within 39-31 with
just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
East Jordans Cutler slowed the
Rambler momentum with a three
point play of his own to put the
Red Devils up 42-31 at the 2:13
mark.

Boyne would outscore the Red

Devils 6-3 over the final two minutes on baskets from Tanner
Kruzel and Bradley Fouchia,
while the EJ got free throws from
Weber and Dustin Hejka.
East Jordan would take a 45-37
lead into the final eight minutes
of regulation.
The two teams would then
trade tosses from the charity
stripe before a Fouchia triple cut
the Red Devil lead to 46-42 with
6:35 left, but EJ senior guard Bacchus would respond with a drive
and layup to push the lead back
to 48-42 just twenty seconds later.
Carson would then draw fouls
on back-to-back possessions for
the Ramblers and knock down a
shot and two free throws over a 40
second stretch to pull within 49-47
with five minutes remaining.
Another Fouchia triple after a
Red Devil basket would put the
Ramblers down a single point 5150 with just over four minutes
left.
BC would go ahead 52-51 on a
pair of Kruzel free throws seconds later.
A Cole Butler jumper and a
pair of Carson free throws would
give Boyne a 56-52 lead with 2:48
to go in the game before Bacchus
would knock down a pair of freebies himself.
Following a Rambler timeout
with 1:52 remaining, Fouchia
would make a pair of free throws
to push the lead back to four
points only to see EJs Weber hit
a deep three to pull the Red Devils within one, 58-57 with one
minute left in the game.
After another BC timeout,
Maceo Vroman was fouled on the
inbounds and calmly connected
on both tosses to put Boyne up 6057 with 50.9 seconds left.
Red Devil senior Dustin Hejka
would then recover a loose ball
and with a little english, get the
shot to drop as the ball seemed to
roll around the rim for seconds
before finally dropping to pull
within 60-59.

EJ would then foul Boynes

Kruzel with 20 seconds left and it
would pay off as he was unable to
convert either attempt, giving the
Red Devils another chance to pull
out the victory, but a drive by
Bacchus with time running out
would not fall as Carson gathered
up the rebound and the Ramblers
escaped with a LMC victory.
We got off to a terrible start,
Rambler coach Nick Redman
said. We couldnt get anything
going, but credit our kids because
they didnt quit.
Carson led the way for Boyne,
3-0 overall, 1-0 conference, with 14
points, while Butler and Fouchia
netted 12 points each and Napont
added 11.
We werent ready to play from
the start, Redman said. It
seemed like we had everybody in

Harbor Springs, former coach up next for Charlevoix boys

By andy Sneddon

CHARELVOIX As the calendar turns to 2014, the Charlevoix

High School boys basketball team
looks to turn the page as well.
The Rayders entered the
Christmas break after a week in
which they were bruised in their
Lake Michigan Conference
opener by Elk Rapids, and lost by
17 points to much-better-than-expected Petoskey team.
The Rayders stand 1-4, with
those four losses coming to teams
that went into the break a combined 9-5. Two of those teams,
Petoskey and Gaylord, are Class
A schools, while the other two, St.
Ignace and Elk Rapids, are expected to be contend for championships in their respective
leagues.
Weve had a pretty rough
schedule, but thats good because
our league is going to be rough,
first-year Rayder coach Bret Erskine said. Its going to be a
tough, tough conference, and a
tough, tough schedule. That
makes you better.
The Rayders are hoping to have
a healthy Zak Hankins sometime
after the break. The 6-foot-9 Ferris State University signee will,
unquestionably, add much upon
his return.
Hankins has been sidelined
with a broken foot and he was to
visit the doctor this week, Erskine said, adding that he doesnt
want to rush Hankins back into
the lineup no matter how badly
his player wants to be on the
floor.
I know he wants to play, I
know he wants to play bad, Erskine said. But were going to
have to reel him in a little bit.
The rough thing for him, and for
me, is hes a college basketball
player. You have to put his best interest in front of anything else.
As a person and as a coach, you
dont want him to hurt it worse
so that hes not able to play in college.
Thats a goal he had and he
achieved that goal. You dont
want to screw that up.
The Rayders finished the opening portion of their schedule
with a 67-50 loss to a Petoskey
team that, despite its relative
youth (the Northmen have just
one returning starter and three
sophomores play prominent
roles), hit the break 3-1.
That loss came three nights
after the Rayders fell to Elk
Rapids, 63-32, in their Lake Michigan Conference opener.
Charlevoix trailed 23-3 after one

quarter to the Elks, and was

down 39-13 at halftime.
Cole Walker scored 13 points to
lead a balanced Elk Rapids attack
in the game. The Elks enter the
Christmas break 3-1 overall, 1-1
league after a 65-62 conference

loss on Friday to unbeaten Boyne

City.
Nick Plude scored nine points
to pace the Rayders against Elk
Rapids.
The Rayders fell behind early
against Petoskey and trailed by

14, 35-21, at halftime, but managed to remain within striking

distance and had their deficit at
10 in the fourth quarter.
Petoskeys Parker Monley, who
hit four 3-pointers on the night,
dropped in a timely triple to help

re-extend the lead and Charlevoix

could get no closer.
Hanging in against a Petoskey
team that made 8-of-14 3-point attempts was a good lesson for the
Rayders, Erskine said.
I think the boys realized
(against Petoskey) that they are a
pretty good team without (Hankins), he said. I think the boys
are starting to realize that hey, we
dont know if (Hankins) is coming back, and we need to step up
and play.
They were playing really hard
in the second half and I thought
we might have a chance. At the
end, we just ran out of gas and
we just couldnt catch them. We
had some turnovers and some
things didnt go our way, and that
happens.
They really fought back the
whole game and played really
hard, and thats all you can ask. I
was really proud of my guys. Its
starting to come. Its just taken a
little bit of time. If we play as
hard as we did (against
Petoskey), were going to be successful.
Monley finished with 14 points
to pace the Northmen, who had
six players score at least eight
points.
Shane Sutherland scored 13
points and Austin Putman and
Nate Moon added 10 apiece for
the Rayders, who will now turn
their attention to 2014.
First up is a date on Friday,
Jan. 7, with Harbor Springs and
former Rayder mentor Adam
Wood. Wood, a Charlevoix graduate who played on several outstanding teams under then-coach
Keith Haske, left Charlevoix after
last season to become the head
coach and athletic director at
Harbor.
The Rams are 2-2 overall, 1-0 in
the Lake Michigan Conference.
Erskine coached Wood during
the latters playing days in
Charlevoix, and was an assistant
to Wood when he headed up the
Rayder program.
Adam and I have been around
together for a long time, Erskine
said. You could just tell when he
was younger, you could see he
had a lot of love for basketball, a
lot of passion for basketball. And
to see him grow up and see what
he is now
He and I have just always had
a great relationship. Hes just a
special young man to me, a great
guy to be around. To have a
coaching relationship and a
friendly relationship like weve
had over the years is just special,
just great.

New Years
Resolutions

Is what youre feeling just the holiday

blues or something more serious?
While the holidays are supposed to
be a time filled with comfort and joy,
90 percent of Americans actually report feelings of stress, anxiety, loneliness and depression.
Sadness or depression varies from
person to person, but during the holidays they both can be reactions to the
stresses and demands of the season.
For many, it can be due to fatigue, unrealistic expectations, financial frustration, over commercialization, or
not having the opportunity to spend
time with family and friends. Others
may feel depressed around the winter
time due to a condition known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which
occurs as the days grow shorter in
the fall and winter.
Although many believe suicides
occur more frequently during the holiday season, it is actually a perpetuated myth. In fact, the Centers for
Disease Controls National Center for
Health Statistics reports that the
month of December marks the lowest
suicide rate, with rates actually highest in the spring and fall. In reality,
this unfortunate holiday myth supports misinformation about suicide
that can sometimes hinder prevention efforts.
But one fact remains depression
continues to be the biggest risk factor
associated with suicide. Individuals
experiencing depression become
more discouraged the deeper depression gets and the longer it goes on.
Whether ones depression is associated with the holiday season or not,
suicide and suicidal thinking are
more widespread than typically believed. Each year in the U.S. alone,
more than 36,000 people take their
own lives, and nearly 400,000 people
attempt suicides. Unfortunately, it
can be hard to identify suicidal thinking in a loved one, but the following
warning signs may help to identify
those who are at risk.

Talk about suicide- If someone you know talks about self-harm

or not wanting to live, take it seriously. Dont leave this person alone
and let them know youre going to get
help.

Bipolar disorder- The symptoms of bipolar disorder a condition

in which bouts of depression are interspersed with periods of mania
often drive people to consider suicide.

Alcohol or drug use- Drug

use and excessive alcohol use are
often warning signs for suicide. In addition, alcoholism is a major contrib-

utor to suicide, with 1 in 3 suicides attributed to alcoholism.

Anxiety - About half of those

who are depressed have agitated depression with anxiety being a main
symptom. Those who are agitated are
more at risk for suicide because anxiety is typically uncomfortable.

Health problems- According

to the National Institute of Mental
Health, individuals 65 and older are
at the highest risk for depression and
suicide. While depression isnt a normal part of aging, problems with vision or hearing, chronic health
conditions, and a loss of independence can increase the risk.
Though many myths about depression and suicide exist, one fact is for
sure treatment helps to decrease the
risk of suicide. Successful treatment
of an underlying psychiatric disorder
is important and can help to reduce
suicidal thoughts, especially among
older adults. When depression is successfully treated, thoughts of suicide
usually decline. In addition, family
members and friends can play a significant role in helping prevent suicide, as social support is linked to
helping lower the risk of suicide.
Counseling and support groups are
another way to relieve some of the
burdens of stress or sadness that
come along with the holiday season.
For more information regarding
suicide awareness and prevention,
visit the National Institute of Mental
Health at www.nimh.nih.gov. In addition, the Michigan Association of
Community Mental Health Boards
(MACMHB) and community mental
health facilities across the state can
provide individuals with resources
and support relating to stress, depression and suicide.
If you are in a crisis or know of an
individual that is in need of help, call
the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. The confidential service is available to anyone, 24
hours a day, seven days a week. You
can also call Third Level Crisis Intervention Center at 800-442-7315 if you
need to talk to someone in the northern Michigan area.

By Deb hagen-Foley

The end of the calendar

year is often a time for reflection. Reflecting on all
that has happened, or not
happened, in the prior year.
Did you achieve your goals
for 2013? Did you have New
Years resolutions? How
long did they last?
Most of us have made resolutions to change in some
way starting January 1.
Many of us, as many as 45%,
make them every year. Another 17% infrequently
make New Years resolutions. Thirty-eight percent
claim that they never make
them. It is our chance to
start over, to do better next
year, to build on the progress
of the current year. Of those
who attempt resolutions,
only 8% are successful in
achieving their goal and 24%
are never successful. Nearly
half, 49% are sometimes successful in keeping their resolutions. Overall, making
resolutions is better than
not, as persons who explicitly make resolutions are ten
times more likely to attain

their goals than those who

do not make them.
We decide that January 1
is going to be the best time to
stop smoking, exercise more,
or eat better. Resolving to
get more sleep or reduce
stress are also common.
Others set goals of starting a
new career, writing a book,
going back to school or finding a life partner. The start
of a new year has become a
traditional starting point for
life changes. Unfortunately,
the change is often shortlived, leading some people to
make the same resolution
every year.
If you have not been successful improving your
health-related behaviors,
you are not alone. More
than 80 percent of adults report they have attempted
lifestyle changes without
success. A 2010 survey
found that fewer than one in
five adults (16 percent) report success at losing
weight (20 percent), starting
a regular exercise program
(15 percent), eating a healthier diet (10 percent), or reducing stress (7 percent) in

Making a lasting change is
more than a one-time resolution. The best intentions
start to fade in the reality of

who has tried to change a
habit will tell you, maintaining behavior change is difficult. If you made New
Years resolutions in January, were not successful and
want to try again in 2014,
this is a good time to reflect
on your last attempt. Why
were you not successful?
In the 2010 study mentioned previously, 78 percent
of participants reported that
their progress was blocked
by obstacles such as
willpower (33 percent), making changes by themselves
(24 percent), and too much
stress (20 percent). Were you
unsuccessful for one of these
reasons? How will you overcome that problem in your
next effort? Next week, I
will share guidance on improving your likelihood for
success in achieving your
goals in 2014.

Real Estate Corner

Question & Answers About Selling Real Estate

Is the New Neighborhood Right for You? Test Drive It!

Compliments of mike Stark,

Stark realty, inc. (231) 536-7700

When seeking out new areas, check

them out, live and in person. If you
have a vacation coming up, pick a region, rent a car, and drive around to
take a look. Spend some time in the
area and ask yourselves these questions.

teenagers hang out on the corner?

Depending on your observations, that
town may or may not be a good fit.
Whats the downtown vibe?
Walk through the downtown area.
Visit and shop at the locally owned
businesses.

Do people have home pride?

What does it look like at night?

Houses that arent kept up can either signal an area full of renters or a
town on the decline. But if people are
clearly investing in their properties,
its a great sign that theyre staying
put because they like the town and
believe that their homes are good investments.

A cute neighborhood can look a lot

different at night. You should walk or
drive around town when the sun goes
down.

Whos hanging out?

Do people spend time outside? And
are they the right kind of people? Do
you feel comfortable saying hi to anyone? Are firefighters present at the
local firehouse? Do packs of

Who are my future neighbors?

Make sure that your trip takes
place during a weekend because
thats when people are more likely
going to be out and about. If theres a
local coffee shop, get a cup and sit
and listen because, chances are, some
of these people will be your neighbors. Dont be afraid to ask them
some questions.

Is the police report positive?

Ask the police department to give
you a crime log. Youll see exactly
whats going on, and where.

Whats rush hour like?

Take the route to work when traffic
is at its heaviest to find out what both
of your commutes would be like during the morning and evening rush
hours. Even if your dream neighborhood is 10 miles away from work, it
could take much longer in traffic, and
that doesnt make any homecoming
welcoming.

Can we rent before we buy?

If youre still not sure and need to
move ASAP, consider renting. This
lets you really get to know the neighborhood before forking over a down
payment.

Automotive Review
2014 Dodge Dart, Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200
Sedans Each Named 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick
The 2014 Dodge Dart, Dodge
Avenger and Chrysler 200
sedanshave achieved Top Safety
Pick ratings from the Insurance
Institute of Highway Safety
(IIHS).
The announcement, made
today, marks the sixth time the
IIHS has commended the
Avenger and 200 mid-size
sedans. Meanwhile, the insurance industry organization has
hailed the Dart compact sedan
each year since it arrived on the
market in 2012.
All three vehicles feature significant advanced-technology
steel content, which enhances
structural integrity. The Darts
68 percent content ratio of highstrength steel is among the highest in the industry.
The first Chrysler Group
product to utilize a vehicle architecture inspired by alliance
partner Fiat S.p.A., the Dart also
boasts a 5-star safety rating
based on crash tests performed
by the U.S. National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration.
To achieve a 2014 IIHS Top
Safety Pick, a vehicle must
achieve a rating of good in
each of the following tests:
- moderate-overlap frontal
crash
- side impact
- roof strength
- whiplash
In addition, a 2014 Top Safety
Pick must rate acceptable or
better in the IIHS new smalloverlap front crashworthiness
evaluation.
The Dodge Dart, Avenger and
Chrysler 200 sedanseach scored
good ratings in moderate-offset frontal crash, side impact,
roof strength and whiplash.
They were rated acceptable in
the new small-overlap frontal
crash test.
The Dart features 10 standard-equipment, advanced-technology airbags a total
unsurpassed in its segment.
The acclaimed compact was
engineered with a class-leading
total of more than 60 safety and
security features. In addition to
its solid structure and 10 standard air bags, the Dart features
an available ParkView back-up
camera, Blind-Spot Monitoring
and Rear Cross Path detection,
which alerts drivers to traffic
that approaches the vehicles
