    Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is caused by an imbalance of the bacteria normally present in the vagina. Bacterialvaginosismayoccuratthesametimeasotherinfectionsorsexuallytransmissible infections(STIs). Symptoms SymptomsofBVmayinclude: Awatery,whiteorgreydischargeinsteadofnormalvaginalsecretions Astrongorunusualodourfromthevagina,oftendescribedasafishyodour.

    Abouthalfofallwomenwithbacterialvaginosiswillhavenosymptoms. How bacterial vaginosis is spread Althoughitisnotclearhowbacterialvaginosisistransmitted,itismorecommoninwomenwho aresexuallyactive.Itsometimesdevelopssoonafterintercoursewithanewpartner.Womenwho havefemalesexualpartnersmaybeathigherriskthanwomenwhohavesexwithmalepartners. ThelinkbetweenspecificsexualpracticesandBVisnotconclusive;however,recentevidence supportstheuseofcondomstoreducetheriskofthisinfection. Diagnosis Duringamedicalexamination,yourdoctormaynotice: Thedischargeorodour Decreasedacidityofthevaginalfluidthiscanoccurevenifyouhavenotnoticedany symptoms.

    Treatment Ifyouhavenosymptoms,treatmentisusuallynotrequired.Youshouldreceivetreatmentifyou: Havesymptomsoryourdoctorhasnoticedsignsofbacterialvaginosis Areabouttohaveamedicalprocedurethatcouldallowbacteriaintotheuterusfor example,insertionofanIUDorterminationofpregnancy Arepregnantyourobstetricianmayneedtobeconsultedabouttreatment.

    Antibiotics are used to treat the infection Anantibioticknownasmetronidazoleisoftenusedtotreattheinfection.Youwillneedto: Taketheantibiotictwiceadayforsevendays Takethetabletsaftermealsthiscanreducethenauseaandupsetstomachthatis sometimesassociatedwithmetronidazole Avoiddrinkingalcoholduringtreatment.

    Yourdoctorcanprescribeavaginalcreamifyouareunabletotakemetronidazole,suchas clindamycincreamthisisappliedtothevaginaforsevennights. Recurrences can occur

    Evenaftertreatment,abouthalfofthewomenwithbacterialvaginosiswillgettheconditionback againwithinsixto12months.Thismaybeduetothetreatmentnotworkingortore-infection. Treatingthemalepartnerofaninfectedwomandoesnotseemtoreducetheriskofrecurrence. Femalepartnersofinfectedwomenareatincreasedrisk,soscreeningforBVandtreatment(if required)isrecommended. Prevention Mostcasesofbacterialvaginosisappeartobeassociatedwithsexualactivity.Condomshavebeen showntoprotectagainstinfectionandsafesexualpracticesarerecommendedforallwomen regardlessofthegenderoftheirpartners.
