: Sweet Add

Learning to add numbers requires a good deal of repetition playing
games is a good way to make this repetition fun and motivating!
This game will be very effective for a small group of students to play,
after they have been introduced to numerals up to twelve, and are
beginning to combine two groups to model addition.
Before students play the game, introduce the game pieces to the students
and look at them together. Help them to become familiar with the format
and rules of the game.
Demonstrate to the students how to throw two dice and find the total.
Some students may need to touch each dot on the die and start counting
from one. Other students will be able to count on from the larger number
to find the total.
Try to make learning experiences and game playing as fun as possible.
The aim of the game is not to demand or test the students knowledge, but
rather to encourage and assist them in playing the game. Remember that
the more fun a student has the more times they will want to play
thereby engaging in the repetition needed to build solid and meaningful
understanding and skills.
Playing games will not only help your students mathematical skills but will
assist them learning to co-operate, concentrate, follow rules, engage with
other people and perhaps more importantly win and lose.
To prepare this game for 4 players, you will need to print four copies of
page 4 and laminate them for durability. Put them in a plastic folder or
file with a printed copy of the instructions. You will need to find counters
and dice from your classroom collection to play to the included rules.

: Sweet Add
Equipment:
4 Game Boards
2 dice (not included)
44 counters (not included)

Purpose:
Students will complete simple addition using the counting-on strategy.
How to Play:

Players sit in a circle. Each player has a game board and eleven
counters (in a pile near their game board).

One player is chosen to go first. On their turn, a player throws the two
dice and finds the total. Teachers should encourage students to count on
from the larger number rolled, e.g. if a & are rolled, the
student counts 5 - 6, 7 to find the total.

The player should then cover the answer on their game board. If a
numeral has already been covered, the player must wait till their next
turn to cover a numeral.

The first player to place counters on their entire game board, wins.
Teachers may like to adjust this, to the first player to cover three
numbers, or four on their game board etc (to shorten the length of time of
play).
