A letter from the Minister...

I am always grateful for September, it brings a sense of normality back to life. The sustaining routines return, there are new beginnings for some, and the celebration of the harvest being gathered in. For us a Methodist Church it marks the beginning of the church year with ministers who have moved churches taking up their new appointment. This means the welcoming of Revd David King to be our Superintendant who oversees the life of the Circuit. We pray for him and Brenda, and look forward to the leadership he will give to our witness as Methodist churches together in the area. Specifically, for us a church we can look ahead to what God has in store for us. In some ways there will be more of the same, which is a good thing, there is reason to celebrate what happens week by week in our church. Thank you to all of you who play your part in making these things happen. As we look ahead we must also be looking for what God might do outside of our routine or how we might respond to the needs of our local community. It has been both a surprise and joy to see the response to the Peace on our Streets postcards. The church has been a catalyst for many in the town to talk with one voice, from children to the elderly. In a small way we have spoken of the hope and peace God gives. I am sure that as the year unfolds we will see more moments of sharing the Good News in practical ways as we long to see Jesus changing lives as we speak of his love and forgiveness.

So, as this year begins, we all have a place in the life of this church and I invite you exercise the gifts that God has given you. Each of our offerings, be it big or small, at the front or behind the scenes is vital in the Kingdom of God. May each of you know how precious you are to God and the life of St Ives Methodist Church. I look forward to seeing how God will use us all and deepen our faith in the year ahead. Every blessing,

Matt

Family News
At this time of year our thoughts and prayers are with all Ministers and Deacons on the move to new Circuits and Churches. We are thinking particularly of David and Penny Shaw who have moved to Reading, and David King and Brenda who have moved into Huntingdon to replace David and Penny. We are also remembering Julie and David Hulme who have faced a difficult move from Birminham to Leeds. Our love and prayers are with them all. On a more local level we are thinking especially of: Gwen Tyler, now home from hospital, but not finding life easy; and of Joyce Foster following her recent fall, sustaining a broken wrist. Doris Watson is still awaiting the results of tests, and is not at all well at present, and Jim Dale, Ted and Jennie Woolford are all unwell at home. We also continue to uphold in our prayers: Mary Hindley, Bill Gurry, Connie Rogers, Bob Ketley and Steve Mear all now in residential care.

Thank you to all who are able to contribute to the ministry of the church in this way.

Parking at Church Please note that the parking spaces at the back of the church have been hired out to local businesses from Monday to Saturday and should not be used by anyone else during these times. Both Pitts Architects and Kitchenwise have experienced problems being able to access their parking spaces due to them being taken up with other vehicles. It may not be members of the church who are causing the problem, but please be aware not to use spaces during the week which local businesses have paid the church to use. Thank you. Bible Study As we celebrate the 400th year anniversary of the King James Bible we have been reminded afresh of the importance of the Bible in our Christian life. Here in St Ives we do not want to let the celebrations or the challenge of this year pass us by so from November we are going to have an evening bible study group that will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. The aim of the group is to take an in depth look at some passages from scripture to deeper understand them and also discover more fully their relevance for us today. If you would be interested in coming along to these please let me know. Rev Matt Finch Bank Holiday Market Thank you to all those who helped at the Bank Holiday Monday market, serving refreshments and selling nearly new items, where 269 was raised for our Church funds. Barbara Cooper

Music on the Waits The Music on the Waits Sunday afternoon concerts have proved even more popular than ever this year. A report will follow in the near future. The money we raised from serving drinks outside the Church, during the eight weeks, will be divided between our Church Charities, and FEST who did a magnificent job organising the event. More information to follow soon. Barbara Cooper

24-7 Prayer
You may remember in March this year the church held its first 24-7 Prayer weekend. For many it was the first experience of such a prayer room and for all it was a special time. Prayer is often the thing we forget about in our church busyness and business, yet it is the foundation for all the ministry and plans we have together. At the end of this month we are having another 24-7 weekend and all are invited to take an hour slot (or more if you would like) in the prayer room. In the 48 hours from 7pm on Friday 30th September to 7pm on Sunday 2nd October we will together seek Gods vision for our church, pray for our community and listen to him speaking to us in the stillness away from the phone and things to do list. The sign up sheet will be pinned to the notice boards in front of the prayer corner from Sunday 4th September. If you have any more queries about it or are unable to get to church to sign up but would like a slot, contact either matt.finch@simc.co.uk or vanessa.murphy@simc.co.uk. Visit our website or look back to the April edition of the church newsletter to read some of the comments from folk who took part. Together, as a church community, we look forward to another time of blessing in the presence of God.
Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18 verse 20

AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CHURCH LEADERSHIP TEAM REGARDING CHURCH COMMUNICATION
As was published in last months newsletter, this will be Stuart Wilkinsons last publication. Firstly, we want to thank Stuart for the way he faithfully gone about this task and every month fought photocopiers and email attachments to produce it for us. Secondly, we need to consider the future of how we best communicate in the life of the church in the printed form. This cannot be done quickly or without wide discussion; a team needs to be formed and people given responsibility to make sure things happen as we like. To this end, I would invite you all to have a think about our church communication and let a church council member know your thoughts so that we can discuss it fully at the next meeting in October. In the meantime, the leadership team feels, the easiest way forward is for a simple slimmed down weekly notice sheet to be produced to let people have important notices. This means one person does not have to take on the onerous task of newsletter editor. So, from the beginning of October, if you have any information that needs to circulated please let the leadership team have it by the Wednesday of each week, either by email to leadership.team@simc.co.uk or by hand. Revd Matt Finch

Heritage Open Days 2011 (www.heritageopendays.org.uk) The church building will be open as part of this national initiative on Saturday 10th September from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11th September from 12 noon to 5 pm. All are welcome ! There will be some general historical material on display. We will be highlighting the material we have discovered about those remembered on the World War I plaque in the chapel recess. It was dedicated on Easter Sunday 1922. The youngest we have come across so far is Rifleman Jabez Stephen Radford of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and he was the son of Arthur and Phillis Radford of The Waits, St Ives. Do you know anyone related to any of these men ? Can you encourage those who may have some information to share to call in and see us during the weekend ?

The Handwritten Bible

The Methodists Handwritten Bible, created by tens of thousands of people across Britain and Northern Ireland, is now online. It contains 7,000 pages with verses written in English, Chinese, Welsh and Braille, plus accompanying illustrations. More than 30,000 volunteers joined in from every part of Britain and further afield - including prisons, schools, colleges, libraries, nursing homes, airports and shopping centres. Dave Webster, internet communications coordinator who was responsible for uploading the Handwritten Bible online, said: "The Handwritten Bible has the human touch. The care and love that people put into it are expressed in the ever-changing handwriting and illustrations. This makes reading it a unique and moving experience." The handwritten bible will be touring the country visiting various churches and special events between now and the 2012 Methodist Church conference. The next pages of this pull-out supplement to your newsletter contain the pages of the handwritten bible created our own church community, which were put together as part of one of the activities the 24/7 prayer room back in March. They make up Psalm 50, which was the section of scripture given to our church.

The handwritten bible can be found in full online at http://www.deepeningdiscipleship.org.uk/?p=404

March for Justice!

Join with Christian Aid on the March for Justice this October. PETERBOROUGH SPONSORED WALK BURGHLEY PARK, WANSFORD OR FERRY MEADOWS TO PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL SATURDAY 1st OCTOBER 2011 Three simultaneous walks taking place on 1st October 2011 and again in October 2012, from either Burghley Park (14miles), Wansford (10miles) or Ferry Meadows (2miles). Each walk will end at Peterborough Cathedral for refreshments and a short service commencing at 5.30pm. Fight poverty step by step register to take part NOW Visit: www.christianaid.org.uk/walks Email: peterborough@christian-aid.org Or Contact: Christian Aid Peterborough 01733 345755
The event is to support some 400 million Dalits (untouchables) in India who are demanding the right to own land, so as to escape from poverty. In 2007 some 25,000 Dalits walked the 350 km from Gwalior to Delhi in a non-violent protest for land rights. Although the government committed itself to land reform, it has not followed through on its promises. In October the Dalit leader P.V. Rajagopal is therefore beginning a 6000 km walk around India to galvanise support for a massive march in October 2012. This time he hopes to lead 100,000 peaceful marchers along the same 350 km route to Delhi. Like Gandhi's march to the sea in protest against the salt tax this march is likely to set off major political change. The marches in the East of England are to show solidarity with the Indian campaigners. Money raised in sponsorship will be used to help landless Dalits take time out to march. They themselves will be putting aside two handfuls of rice a week to save up provisions for the protest.

The Parable of the Sower

While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown. When he said this, he called out, Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear. His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand. This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by lifes worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. from Luke Chapter 8 (NIV) The above sunflower picture is of Evelyn Watmores sunflower, grown from a seed given out at a church service earlier this year.

East Africa famine

With the phone hacking scandal, UK street riots and political change in Libya, it has been easy for the news media throughout the summer to completely forget about the plight of millions of the worlds very poorest people undergoing the worst ever drought of living memory. The Methodist Church in Britain has made a solidarity grant of 20,000 to the Methodist Church in Kenya, to help with relief work in light of the ongoing famine throughout East Africa. The grant has helped to buy and distribute food to areas most affected by the famine. The worst hit areas are mainly in northern Kenya, which has had little or no rainfall lately. There is massive crop failure, drying up of the few water sources and death of animals, which are the communities major source of income. "Over a million people now stand the risk of death if nothing is done to lessen the impact of this catastrophe," says partnership coordinator for Africa, Dr Bunmi Olayisade. "It is necessary for stakeholders to put their efforts together to save lives and restore hope to the people in the affected areas. It will also be important for the government, NGOs and well-wishers to develop long term mechanisms that would include irrigation and other support to save the people of northern Kenya from the continued ravages of hunger." The Methodist Church is appealing for funds to support the relief work. If you wish to donate, you can do so via the Methodist World Mission Fund online. Alternatively you can send a cheque (made payable to 'Methodist Church World Mission Fund') to The Methodist Church World Mission Fund, Methodist Church House, 25 Marylebone Road, London NW1 5JR.

PEACE
ON OUR STREETS
With the summer riots in our country, St Ives Methodist Church wanted to stand with our local community and make a statement of peace for our streets, town and country. We invited anyone who would like to, to write their message of peace on postcards being distributed across the town - and attach them to the railings outside the Methodist Church building on The Waits. We hoped that this display gave people hope and courage when they saw troubling images on their television. On Sunday 21st August, an eco-balloon release saw a hundred white biodegradable balloons released during our open air service as a statement for peace during our prayers. Our church minister, Rev Matt Finch, appeared on BBC Radio Cambridgeshires breakfast show that morning to explain a little more about the idea behind the peace on our streets initiative.

On air, Matt explained to the county that we can feel helpless when we see such images and wondered what we could do in our sleepy market town. Matt continued to explain As a Christian community here in St Ives, we find it really hard whats going on in our country right now, and rather than just putting our hands together and praying inside the church, lets put our prayers outside of the building and show the community of St Ives that we really mean peace, and we want them to be able to speak for peace as well. Matt added Its easy to feel helpless. We cant all catch a train to a city and help clear up, but we can, in a small way, say that we believe in peace and can make a statement about it. Matts radio interview can he heard in full on our website and in our podcast feed. If you are unable to access this, you can hear a recording over the phone by calling 0844 774 5242 and entering extension code 879879 followed by the hash (#) key. You can read about the national response of the Methodist Church to the riots on the streets elsewhere in this newsletter, along with details of the chance to support the Mission In Britain fund, who are providing grants to churches and circuits working in the riot-affected areas.

A prayer for broken communities in UK towns and cities

Loving God, you call us into community, and we only become truly ourselves as we are for others. Forgive us for our brokenness and heal the hurts of communities damaged in the recent troubles in our cities in the United Kingdom. Help us to restore the harm to neighbourhoods, buildings and relationships and to rekindle hope where fires of anger and disappointment raged. Give to the Church in areas of trouble the courage and creativity to be there for others, and to be part of your gracious work of restoration and recovery. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, who is our peace and who keeps breaking down the barriers that divide us from each other. Amen

Prayer by Revd Mark Wakelin

A THANK YOU LETTER FROM DAVID AND PENNY SHAW TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE CIRCUIT Dear friends, Thank you so much for the generous gift you gave us. It was sometime before I found it! I had put it in my Bible box, which in the end turned up in just about the last box we opened! It was a surprise as I wasn't expecting anything! I feel a bit in limbo at the moment. It's odd this quiet before the storm that will burst in September. I look at the chaos in my study and have to remind myself that it doesn't look any different from how it normally looks! Last week we had to go to Crewe for the funeral of my Auntie Margaret. With her death that older generation has come to an end. This summer has brought plenty of loss. My hope is that there are new beginnings just around the corner. Thanks again and may God continue to bless you and use you in His service. Love David & Penny (August 2011) Contacting Rev David King The circuit are having difficulty transferring David Shaw's old telephone number to the new manse at Sparrowhawk Way and David King is currently using a temporary number - 01480 731153. As far as the circuit are currently aware, the old number will be transferred sometime during the first week of September, but we do not know exactly when.

Anyone wishing to contact David and Brenda King should use the temporary number for the next few days, after which we hope that David Shaw's number will be transferred. If there are any further changes, the circuit will let people know as soon as possible. Please also note Davids correct email address is david.king2@methodist.org.uk and not the one that appears on the plan. You are invited to a

The Methodist Churchs national response to the riots across England

Methodist churches in their local communities have been working and praying hard in the aftermath of the riots across England last week. There have been prayer vigils in Tottenham, Wolverhampton, Central London, Manchester and Birmingham, and many other locations. Street pastors, town centre and retail chaplains have been out on the streets; Methodist ministers have been interviewed on local radio stations; Wolverhampton churches are helping small businesses which have lost all their stock; The Nexus Fresh Expression in Central Buildings, Manchester has been offering free coffee to people helping with the clean-up. Commenting on the events, the chair of the London District, the Revd Jenny Impey said, "A number of our people live close to the hot spots and have spoken of their shock at what they have witnessed, but are responding in positive ways by helping with clean-up operations, calling together people for prayer and positive action and contacting church members to ensure that they are OK. "Many people across London and elsewhere are counting the cost of the destruction on our streets. Our churches, which are at the heart of the communities affected, want to play their part in partnership with others to bring healing and peace to those areas, and demonstrate that this city is a place of peaceful, diverse and vibrant communities." If you would like to make a donation to the Mission in Britain Fund which makes grants to local churches and circuits, you can give online through JustGiving. Or, if you would prefer to send a cheque, please make it payable to Mission in Britain Fund and send it to The Mission in Britain Fund, Methodist Church House, 25 Marylebone Road, London NW1 5JR.
