Psalm 92 It is Good to Praise the LORD!

One of my daughters asked me the other day why we should praise God and give Him all the glory. It was asked in a childlike and 
guileless kind of way but it really made me stop and think. Why do we praise Him? Is it just when He answers prayers or does what we 
think He should? Or do we praise Him regardless of our circumstances? Psalm 92 will clearly show us why we should praise God, how 
we should praise Him, and for what we should praise Him, and what characterizes someone who fails to praise the LORD.

A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day. In the post­exilic liturgy of the temple this Psalm was sung at the time of the morning 
sacrifice on the Sabbath. Jesus is the fulfillment of all sacrifice and He is our Sabbath rest! (Hebrews 3, 4, 10)
Let’s read Psalm 92 together.

I.  It is Good to Praise the Lord  (v. 1­3)
   
[ 1 It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, 2 to proclaim your love in the morning and your 
faithfulness at night, 3 to the music of the ten­stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. ]
a. Through proclamation
i. Of His love.
ii.Of His faithfulness.
iii.APP: Today this takes the form of preaching from the pulpit or sharing the Gospel of Christ!
b. Through music
i. Though we may debate style worship through music is inherent to both our earthly and heavenly worship.
c. Throughout our day.
i. We should start and end the day with praise!

II.  We should rejoice in  His
    deeds and thoughts (wisdom of God)
    (v. 4­5)
   
[ 4For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD;  I sing for joy at the works of your hands. 5 How great are your works, O 
LORD, how profound your thoughts! ]
a. What God has done (Past)
i. Israel could look back to a rich history of God’s deliverance and provision. We can look back to all the 
riches of heaven provided to us in Christ.
b. What God is doing (Present)
i. We need to be recognizing all the ways God is providing for us on a daily basis. 
c. What God will do (Future)
i. 1 Cor. 2:6­10 – “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for 
those who love him”(Is. 64:4)b—but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
ii. God has told of us our glorious future in scripture and a primary reason why we study prophecy is for the 
hope it provides.
d. What God has made.
i. In Romans Paul tells us that men are without excuse when they fail to acknowledge God because His 
eternal power and divine nature can be clearly seen through what has been made. Today Satan’s greatest 
attacks are coming through those who deny these truths, attack God directly and personally, and declare 
belief in God as dangerous and evil.
e. What God has revealed (His Word).
i. God has given us His Living Word and perfect Wisdom (Logos) in His Son Jesus Christ. 
ii.He has testified to Him and all that He has done and will do in His written Word.
iii.All those who fail to rejoice in either the written Word or the Son Himself will soon find their faith 
shipwrecked by the winds and waves of doctrine based on the wisdom of man. This is exactly what many 
are doing today who claim the title “Christian”.

III.  The foolishness of not praising God.  (v. 6­9)
   
 [ 6 The senseless man does not know, fools do not understand, 7 that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers 
flourish, they will be forever destroyed. ]
What we should know about those who reject God:
a. Wickedness and Foolishness are synonymous – 
i. The wicked are foolish in believing they will gain anything by rejecting God and pursuing evil.
ii. The foolish are naturally wicked as they lack the fear of God which is the beginning of wisdom.
b. When someone fails to praise God it reflects their:
i. Lack of spiritual perception. 
1. Unbelievers do not have the Spirit of God and therefore cannot accept the things of God.
ii. Lack of knowledge of God’s Word.
iii.Lack of understanding our ultimate destiny apart from God’s grace.
c. Evildoers do flourish! But only in this life.
i. The Hebrew word indicates a “twinkling or blink of blooming”
ii.The wise man does not envy them. Proverbs 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be 
zealous for the fear of the LORD.
iii.The wicked may flourish but it is short­lived and ultimately empty.
iv.What is 70 years compared to eternity!
v. The destiny of the wicked is destruction and separation from God for eternity.
d. God will receive all the praise regardless of whether we give it willingly.
[ 8 But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. ]
i. The enemies of God both ancient and contemporary seek to deny him the praise due him.
ii. Their destiny is everlasting destruction.
iii.Satan will be cast in the Lake of fire.
iv.All those who reject God and His Son Jesus Christ will be cast there with him.
v. Philippians 2:9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every

name,  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and every tongue 
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
e. The enemies of God will not succeed!
[ 9 For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. ]
i. It may seem they are gaining ground every day yet the Lord will triumph ultimately and completely.
ii. We should see them as enemies of God and not our personal enemies.

IV.  Experience should fuel our praise.  (v. 10­11)
   
[  10 You have exalted my horn [a] like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. 11 My eyes have seen the defeat of 
my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. ]
a. David had seen the Lord’s faithfulness in his own life:
i. God had exalted and strengthened Him as a ruler.
ii. God had anointed him and set him apart for holy purposes.
iii.With his own eyes and ears he had seen the Lord’s deliverance from real and pressing foes.
iv.APP: What have you seen the Lord deliver you from? What has He enabled you to do that you would not 
have been able to do without Him?
b. This could also point to the Davidic Messiah, Jesus Christ, who is exalted above all kings and rulers and will 
stand as victorious judge over all His foes.
Psalm 2 1
Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers 
gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. 3“Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.” 
4
The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, 
saying, 6“I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me, “You are my 
Son; today I have become your Father. 8Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your 
possession.  9You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”  10Therefore, you kings, be wise; 
be warned, you rulers of the earth.  11Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. 12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you 
be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
 V.  A glorious future awaits those who praise Him!  (v. 12­15)
   
[ 12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they 
will flourish in the courts of our God.  14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, 15 proclaiming, "The 
LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him."]
a. We will flourish 
i. The wicked flourish in a “twinkling” like the grass or the wildflower, the righteous flourish in a lasting way 
like a long­lived palm or cedar tree.
b. We will dwell in the house of the Lord
i. This may point to the Millennial Kingdom reign of Christ.
ii.The Temple pictured in Ezekiel 40­48
iii.Both Solomon’s Temple and Ezekiel’s prophesied temple are decorated with Palm Trees.
c. We will have eternal life. 
i. Even those who enter the Millennial Kingdom alive or are born into it will live long lives.
d. We will praise God for all eternity because:
i. He is upright (absolutely holy/right in all He does)
ii.He is our rock (never changes/can be relied on)
iii.There is no wickedness in Him (absolutely trustworthy/nothing to fear)

If we know who God truly is, if we have seen Him work in our lives and the lives of others, if we see clearly from scripture what He 
has prepared for us who love Him how can we fail to praise Him?

Praise of God is so inherently deserved, so clearly merited that if we don’t do it the rocks and trees will! Listen closely to the words of 
the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is our God” as we close our service this morning. Meditate on the words as you sing.
