ESTIMATION OF THREAD CONSUMPTION OF A GARMENT The thread consumption for a particular garment can be calculated by measuring the specified length of a given seam. For calculating this identify the type of stitches like single needle lock stitch, double needle lock stitch, over lock stitch, flat lock stitch etc., in the garment and make a list, follow the procedure given below. PROCEDURE: 1). Pick up the garment. 2). Measure the seam length based on the type of stitches with 2 3 cm allowance at the beginning and at the end of each seam length where trimmer or scissors is used. In case where Under Bed Trimmer is used, do not consider the above stated allowance. Add seam length to get Total seam length. For example: Sl.no. 1 2 3 Total Operations Front joint Back joint Pocket hem SNLS (cms) 10 * 2 = 20 15 8 43 DNLS (cms) 10 * 2 = 20 15 35 O/L (cms) 10 * 2 = 20 15 35

Total seam length 3). Multiply the total seam length by respective consumption factor to get respective consumption of thread (based on stitch type). (Thread consumption data collected from the books like Technology of Cloth manufacture by Mr. Harold Carr & Mr. Barbara Latham and Thread manufacturers like Coats India etc is given in the following table.) Stitch class 301 101 401 304 503 504 512 516 406 602 605 606 Description Consumption factor as per Technology of Cloth manufacture / Coats etc 2.5 4.0 5.5 7.0 12.0 14.0 18.0 20.0 18.0 25.0 28.0 32.0

Estimation of Thread consumption of garment

Kaja buttonhole---1 meter / button hole ( size ) Button sew--------0.5 meter / button Bartack------------0.75 meter / bartack

For Example: SNLS + DNLS + 3T O/L 43 cms * 2.5 + 35 cms* 2.5 * 2 + 35 cms* 14 = 772.5 cm Total thread consumption / garment

4). Add 10% allowance to Total thread consumption due to machine running condition, thread breaks, repairs, etc., Total thread consumption / garment = 772.5 cm * 1.10 = 849.75 cm ~ 8.50 meter / garment. Note: The above stated thread consumption is for 1 garment. If the garment is to be sewn in the sewing line, then thread is required for extra bobbins and cones on the machine. Hence 15% extra allowance is to be given while ordering in bulk.
