Despite that ORYKTOLOGI KA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS are devoted
to Minerals, Fossils and Gemstones , we feel the need to say
something on one of the most valuable and blessed ingredients in
Life: Water. The water we drink , along with the Air we breath , are
the backbone of every organism on Planet Earth. People will enjoy
collecting Minerals, Fossils, Gemstones, Stamps , Coins etc only under
conditions of Peace and if they have solved everyday problems to
survive in their Life. As long as we open the faucet in our house and
drink water , things are optimistic and everything sails smoothly . I f
the water running from the faucet in our house, is running less and
less , is interrupted or the quality of water is poor , then something
does not go well. Large areas on Earth face drinkable water problems,
while other areas beyond suspicion start step-by-step facing
problems with water supply. Published articles report that the
population on Earth numbering around 6,5 billion now , will reach the
9 billion until the year 2050. Companies and Banks urge people to
invest their money on water . Why we say all these ? J ust to join
our voice with the voice of other people who ask with agony : I s still
time to save what can be saved in our Planet or we are on an
environmental trip , planned by people , without return ? The answer
is : The time will show. Yes , but , it may be too late by then. Under
the ominous predictions for the future and the problems on drinking
water in various areas , the 8

and importance to all.

- Garnets is a group of minerals having the general formula X

. The X site is usually occupied by divalent
cations (Ca
2+
, Mg
2+
, Fe
2+
) and the Y site by trivalent cations (Al
3+
, Fe
3+
, Cr

). Garnets are found in many colors
including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, pink and colorless
Pure crystals of garnet are used as gemstones. I n particular, it is the birthstone for the month of J anuary. Garnet sand is a
good abrasive , and a common replacement for silica sand in sand blasting. Mixed with very high pressure water, garnet is
used to cut steel and other materials in water jets. Garnet sand is also used for water filtration media. It is mainly
almandine garnet [ Fe3Al2(SiO4)3 ] that is used in a variety of filtration applications which include I ndustrial Waste Water
treatment and commercial water filtration. Garnet is possibly the most cost effective alternative for water filtration beds
as it resets the filter bed more rapidly after the bed is back-flushed. Moreover, it is also effective for the elimination of
heavy minerals. Furthermore it has the benefit of being chemically inert, recycle in resulting in longer production to Water
treatment medium.
- We should also mention one of the uses of another mineral group , the z e o l i t e s in swimming pools
filters, Water filtration.

Swarms of Quartz veins in Kythnos Island, Aegean Sea , Hellas
By
Petros E. Solomonidis , Louka Ralli 139 , Piraeus , EL-18534 , Hellas
Tel. Mobile : +30-6945296250
Kythnos is a beautiful island of Western Cyclades in the Aegean Sea , Hellas. Needless to say that every Greek
Island has its own beauty . Kythnos is located in a distance of 52 nautical miles from my Native , Piraeus
which is one of the the biggest Ports in Mediterranean. The island is mountainous and its size is about 99
square kilometers. The landscape includes small villages build with traditional Aegean Sea island
Architecture and the villages are scattered throughout the island. Paved roads , white houses , Greek
orthodox churches , squares , windmills and emerald green sea make a magic scenic. The island has a calm
and wild Nature and this combination make Kythnos more attractive as it combines tranquility and wildness.
It has thermal springs with hot waters reaching 52 degrees centigrade and hence there is interest for
Geothermal potential as the island has a substantial aeolic and solar potential to talk in terms of alternative
clean energies. As mineral collector , I was impressed from the swarms of milky quartz veins scattered along
the metamorphic rock of the island .The phenomenon is very impressive along the coastline. (See
photographs 3, 6 ,7 and 9) . The quartz veins seen in the photographs are in the vicinity of Apokrisi area (see
map and photographs 2 and 10). In the photograph 6 one can see a panoramic view of the island , while in
photographs 4 and 5 are milky quartz specimens which sometimes present cavities evidence of metallic
elements (minerals) removed with weathering and leaving original space used to host other minerals (see
photograph 4). In photograph 1 the red oval line shows a cabochon surface in one of the collected milky
quartz samples. Iron deposits and copper smelters have been reported in Kythnos. Some address in the web
for more information on Kythnos island : www.kithnos.gr , http:/ / www.ellada.com/ cyclad07.html ,

GeMin , Your Mineral ,Gem , J ewellery and Fossil Exhibition in
Southeastern Europe.
www.gemin.eu
- Most of major European Mineral, Gem and Fossil shows take place in Western Europe . GeMin
show in Athens ,Hellas , is the unique event of its kind which covers the Mineral, Gem , J ewellery
and Fossil activities , Industry and Earth Sciences and fills the gap in Southeastern Europe.
ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS is widely known that sponsors the GeMin show
since 1987 , but our publication has and will continue to support within its possibilities any effort on
Earth Sciences and especially on Minerals, Gems and Fossils. We always believe that this is the only
way to enhance the Sciences of Mineralogy , Paleontology in the form of hobby as well as enhance
the Gem Industry. It is the least acknowledgement to all those people who look for minerals ,gems
and fossils in the remote areas of the Earth and bring them in front of Collectors at various Shows. It
is the least acknowledgement to all those suppliers of Gem Rough and superb Mineral and Fossil
Specimens from around the World.
One of the most striking features of Athens GeMin show is its substantial sales potential as Hellas
is one of major tourist destinations in the World and apart from collectors in Hellas ,thousands of
collectors come as tourists and buy minerals, gems and fossils. Companies have realized this and so
there is an inflow of material every year in the Market here.
- GeMin show is the most comfortable show in Europe as the organizing Committee takes care for
the comfortness both the Exhibitors and the visitors. A great deal of superb specimens ,gems and
fossils are expected to be on display during 21
rst
GeMin 2007 to be held in Athens on 23-24-25
November 2007 and we invite all to be present in this big event in Athens either as Exhibitors or as
Visitors.
-Another parameter which is seriously taken into consideration by the Organizing Committee of
GeMin is the junior section : The future are the pupils ,the students and in general the younger
generation of collectors ,so schools are urged and invited to visit GeMin ,so young people have the
chance to come across with mineral specimens, gems and fossils but also with educational products
on Earth Sciences.

Cleanness (synonyms are Clarity or Clearness) of a gem crystal is described as follows :
I F Clean : The Gem in the interior and on the surface is free from inclusions of any kind .
VVS - Eye Clean : The Gem is clean to the naked eye.
VSI - Very Slight Inclusions : The Gem is included slightly but it does not affect the brilliance and beauty in anyway.
SI - Slight Inclusions : The Gem has little inclusions visible to the naked eye.
I Inclusions : The Gem has visible large or many minor inclusion which somewhat affect the Gem`s brilliance.
Tr anspar ent : The Gem allows light to pass through i.e., it has the property of transmitting light without appreciable scattering.
Tr ansl uc ent (semi t r anspar ent ) : The Gem allows light to pass through , but the light is diffused .
Opaque : The Gem is not transparent or translucent , it does not allow the light to pass through.
- The Quartz crystal in photograph 1 has a cleanness which is retained stable throughout the crystal
(green arrow). The quartz crystal in photograph 2 is characterized by 3 zones the upper clean zone
(b l u e a r r o w ) and then there is a gradual transition to a translucent zone (r e d a r r o w ) to reach
gradually in milky quartz root zone of the crystal (yellow arrow). The same thing is observed in the
quartz crystal in photograph 3 but the difference here between the quartz crystal in photo 2 and the
quartz crystal in photo 3 is that while there is a gradual transition from top to root in the quartz in
photo 2 , there are almost sharp boundaries between the same zones in quartz crystal in photograph 3 .
-I t is worth to note that in gem crystals of rare minerals , such as emerald , the price of a facetted
emerald stone cut from the transparent top zone of the rough crystal (zone indicated by blue arrow)
may differ , reaching some thousands Euro/ carat higher than the price of a facetted emerald stone (of
same size, shape and weight) coming from the other zones of the same crystal (middle zone / red
arrow and root zone / yellow arrow)

, conchoidal fracture and
Colors : Black, gray, dark green , red and recently blue
obsidian has been reported from Indonesia. Recently a
silver gemstone necklace jewel was submitted for appraising
in ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS.
The round beads were black but some of the beads were
bi-colored (black and brown-red) or three colored (black ,
brown-red and gray) . The necklace had been sold as black
onyx and the Lady asked us how beads of black onyx could be
bi-colored or three-colored. A carefull examination revealed that the Black onyx bead gemstone necklace
was an obsidian gemstone necklace. To give you an example : Two obsidian spheres are seen in upper right
photos. One sphere is totally black in color while the second one is three-colored sphere. (blue arrow shows
brown-red part of the obsidian sphere , red arrow shows the black obsidian and green arrow shows the gray
colored obsidian). This obsidian spheres come from the Armenia. All black gemstone beads in market are sold
under the general commercial name black onyx . Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz while sardonyx
is a variety in which the colored bands are sard , i.e. a reddish-brown chalcedony, SiO
2
.
- By the way , when you visit Armenia you should be aware that Yerevans Vernisage (arts and crafts
market), close to Republic Square, bustles with hundreds of vendors selling a variety of crafts on weekends
and Wednesdays . The market offers woodcarving, antiques, fine lace, and the hand-knotted wool carpets
and kilims that are a Caucasus specialty. Obsidian, which is found locally, is crafted into assortment of
jewelry and ornamental objects.

More on Obsidian
-Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass as said before and is the result of volcanic lava coming in contact
with water. Often the lava pours into a lake or ocean and is cooled quickly. This process produces a glassy
texture in the resulting rock is called obsidian. Iron and magnesium give the obsidian a dark green to black
color. Recently the market is flooded by fine green or blue green transparent obsidian and published report
quote as man-made colored glass. Same way we get fine citrine colored glass , man-made (See
ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS ,Vol. 22 , No 130 , J ULY-AUGUST 2007). Please pay attention
when buy such attractive minerals.
-Color is dark green to dark brown and black, also can show sheens of gold or green, yellow, blue and/ or
purple coloration. Sometimes with white inclusions (Snowflake Obsidian). Snowflake obsidian is a
commercial name as the white mineral inclusion is cristobalite , a variety of quartz.
-It should be mentioned that obsidian in quite a few areas such as in Armenia ,Mexico , is a suitable gem
rough material for making cabochons , carvings and other obsidian crafts . On the other hand obsidian from
Greece and other areas which belong from geology point of view , in the Alpine Orogeny present many
fractures based to the knowledge so far and is not suitable as gem rough source material in the
Gemstone Industry. But still presents exceptional interest from scientific and collection point of view. An
example is the obsidian in photograph 3 which comes from the famous active Volcano of Nisyros Island in the
Aegean sea.

- Quiz : Early August a Quartz cluster specimen associated with hematite available by a rock shop downtown
Athens , came in our hands ( photograph 7 ). All dark material is hematite , both the black-gray mineral in
base of the specimen and the coating on the top half of the crystal. The owner of the rock shop in Athens told
me that the specimen was from Brazil . Same day surfing in the internet , I noted a similar specimen , quartz
associated with hematite from Pingtouling , Guangdong , China. (photograph 8 ).
Was the sample in photograph 7 from Brazil ? Or the rock-shop owner did not know the origin ? Or there may
be so alike quartz crystal clusters associated with hematite specimens both from Brazil and China in the
market ? Any helping hand ?

In the Edition THE MUSEUM OF AGHIA ANNA EVIA POPULAR AND AGRICULTURAL LIFE , among others ,
it is reported that everything in life has its own story , its starting point , successive stages and its end.
Some words with huge meaning as in these words is included what is said that life is a circle.
The wider area of Aghia Anna Kerasia in Northern Evia (see map above ) is a beautiful area which among
others- it hides Paleontological Treasures. Paleontology is the Science of the evolution of fauna and flora
throughout the Geological Time. This can be done with the study of fossils preserved in rocks. Paleontology
is the Geoscience to study the life in the past ,from the beginning up to now as life goes on despite that
individual organisms are passing away. In the Museum of Aghia Anna which we visited , we noticed that
among the various displays of popular art and agricultural life, there were also a couple of fossil petrified
wood (see photographs 4-5 ). After Aghia Anna we visited the Kerasia village (see map above ) , where
the University of Athens in collaboration with the Local Authorities have created since September 2006 , an
excellent Paleontological Museum with fossil findings from the area , such as hipparion and other fossils of
vertebrates (see photographs 7-14 ). Along the way from Aghia Anna to Kerasia one can see very nice
exposures of peridotites (photograph 3) and sediments (photograph 4) which host many fossils in the
area . In the central square of the village Kerasia petrified fossil trunks are scattered around (see
photographs 15-19 ) , all these being evidence of the Paleontological Treasures in the area. South of
Aghia Anna is located the Mantoudi Village (see map above ) in the vicinity of which there are deposits of
Magnesite. So it is worth to visit this area of Northern Evia for Paleontological and Mineralogical hunting .
The landscape is beautiful and there is accessibility of interesting localities through asphalt roads, country
roads and paths. You only have to carry back your Treasures !
