You would probably never consider taking shortcuts in other aspects of your life, from car maintenance to paying your taxes. But when it comes to do-it-yourself home improvement and decorating projects, theres no shame in cheating - and a lot to be gained by doing it. Decorator touches like crown moulding that requires no mitering and no-sew window treatments can give your home an instant visual upgrade for a fraction of the cost of having those jobs done professionally. Here are four DIY cheats that will save you time and money - and yield professional results that look like you spent a bundle:

installation can be prohibitive, yet properly installing wall-to-wall carpet requires specialized skills and tools that most DIYers dont have. Carpet tiles can be a great alternative. Installing carpet tiles is well within the abilities of most homeowners. Because theyre a smaller, more manageable size, carpet tiles are easier to install than a large piece of carpet. They require fewer cuts and no stretching. They also deliver enhanced design capabilities; its easy to create a unique pattern using different colored tiles.

Few design touches do more to dress up a room than adding crown moulding. But traditionally, crown moulding has been a job best left to professionals or DIYers with a lot more time and ambition than most. Adding crown molding the old-fashioned way requires expertise - like knowing how to properly cut and nish each piece - and tools that most homeowners simply dont have. Feel like cheating? Forget what the inside of your home looks like for just a bit and focus on your homes exterior. The exterior of your home makes a lasting and daily impression on your friends and family, along with your neighbors, says Mark Clement, professional contractor and host of MyFixItUpLife home improvement radio show. While the weather is good, my advice is to get outside and x up problem areas, work on the landscaping and invest in products that make your homes exterior not only look great, but work great. Clement, who is in the middle of an ongoing renovation of his 100-year-old home in Pennsylvania, recommends assessing your needs and then diving in on projects. On the exterior of the home there are three big, critical areas I recommend people evaluate every year the roof, the windows and the entry door. Those are key areas because, along with being visual focal points of the home, they help protect a house from severe weather. And, if you have problems with older windows, doors or roong tiles, youre looking at higher energy bills and growing problems that can affect your wallet long-term. Clement offers these recommendations for keeping your home exterior in top shape:

1. Check your roof yearly (from a ladder or from a neighbors home with binoculars) to determine the condition of your roof. Look for problem areas, such as missing or broken shingles, along with roong tiles that may be apping in the wind. These are all indications that a new roof may be in your future. 2. Dont forget to check the sides of your roof. The southern exposure weathers signicantly faster than the other sides of the roof, so make sure to carefully examine this one. Also, shallower pitches weather faster than steeper pitches. So again, if your roof has a shallow pitch like a shed dormer make certain you can clearly see it to get a true indication of the condition of your roof.

Open shelving is perfect for towels and linens, plus items like tissues and cotton balls, which can be stored in decorative jars or containers. Avoid a cluttered look by placing large wicker baskets on the bottom shelf of the vanity for large everyday items, such as brushes, toiletries and makeup.
