PART - B (Answer any three questions, 3 14 marks) 3 (a) (b) What is meant by limit state? Discuss the different limit states to be considered in reinforced concrete design. Why is the partial safety factor for concrete (c) greater than that for reinforcing steel (s) in the consideration of ultimate limit states? A RC floor slab of 120 mm thick is supported by T-beam at 3.2 m intervals c/c. the slab carries a total superimposed load of 3.5 kN/m2 in addition to its self weight. The effective span of T-beams is 9.6 m. Design the beam using M20 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel. State the minimum requirement of shear reinforcement and maximum permitted spacing of stirrups in a beam as per I.S. specifications. The support section of a doubly reinforced rectangular beam is subjected to a shear force of 86 kN. The beam is of 275 mm x 550 mm effective size and of M20 grade concrete. It is reinforced with 3 numbers of 20 mm dia. Deformed bars in the tension zone. Design the shear reinforcement for the support section using 8 mm dia M.S bars. A hall 6 m x 8 m is to be covered with RC slab. Design suitable thickness of the slab and the reinforcement. The dead load on the slab consists of 75 mm earth of density 12 kN/cu.m. And tiles 40 mm thick (density of tiles = 15 kN/cu.m). Assume live load of 1 kN/sq.m. use M20 & Fe 415. One way slab of effective span 4 m is made of M20 concrete with over all thickness of 100 mm. 8 mm HYSD S-Fe415 bars at 120 mm spacing are placed at an effective depth of 75 mm. PART - A (Answer any one question, 1 28 marks) ***** 1 Design reinforced concrete slab for a room measuring 5 m x 5 m. The slab is to rest upon 11/2 brick thick walls constructed all round. The flooring is to consist of 25 mm thick cement concrete layer. The flooring may be assumed to be subjected to a uniformly distributed super imposed load of 5 kN/m2.The following data may be assumed in the design: Use M20 grade of concrete and Fe415 grade steel. Draw a cross section of the designed slab showing clearly the bar bending schedule of the reinforcement. 2 A simply supported reinforced concrete beam is subjected to a working bending moment of 700 kNm and a shear force of 300 kN. Design a T-beam cross-section to resist the above forces using the following data: maximum width of flange 1000 mm, and thickness of flange 150 mm, use M20 concrete and HYSD-Fe415 bars. Draw the cross section and elevation details. PART B (Answer any three questions, 3 14 marks) 3 (a) (b) 4 The term balanced section is used in both working stress method (WSM) and limit state method (LSM). Discuss the difference in meaning. Why is it desirable to design over-reinforced sections in: (i) WSM? (ii) LSM? A simply supported RC rectangular beam of 250 mm x 510 mm overall size carries an udl of 12.5 kN/m (inclusive of its self weight) over an effective span of 5.5 m. It is reinforced with 3 numbers of 20 mm dia. Mild steel bars in tension with a clear cover of 25 mm throughout its length. The concrete is of M20 grade. Design the shear reinforcement in the form of vertical stirrups for the maximum shear force using 6 mm dia. mild steel bars. What is the difference between single reinforced and double reinforced section? Determine the moment capacity of a doubly-reinforced rectangular cross-section beam for the following data: b = 300 mm, d = 600 mm, Ast = 1407 mm2, fck = 415 N/mm2, fck = 20 N/mm2. Design the reinforcement in a column of size 400 mm x 600 mm, subjected to a factored axial load of 2500 kN. The column has unsupported lengths of 3.0 m and is braced against side way in both directions. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Design a RCC footing for a 200 mm thick brick masonry wall carrying a load of 80 kN/m length of the wall. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 80 kN/m2. Use M25 grade of concrete and mild steel reinforcement.
