The sample current values are processed by powerful DSP controller. It converts these current samples into equivalent vectors and numbers of parameter such as RMS values of IHV and ILV and phases. IHV represent HV current and ILV represent LV current. Normally to match HV and LV CT ratio, phase shift between two winding due to transformer vector group, ICTs (Interposing CTs) are needed. In ADR233B relay ICTs are software selectable. There are two separate ICT ratio and vector groups provided, one for HV value and another for LV value. After applying this corrective factor, relay calculates operating and restraining signal from IHx and ILx (IH1 and IL1 is HV and LV current after applying ICT correction factor. x denote phase, 1 for R, 2 for Y and 3 for B). Based on these settings the relay decides to operate or restrain. Operating Current Iox = IHx ILx Restraining Current Ibx = (|IHx| +| ILx| ) / 2 Relay operate when Io is greater than pick-up current setting and Iox > = S Ibx Where S = set bias. (Slope 1)

Over Current + REF protection. 1. 3 Stages of Phase Over Current element. (Ip>, Ip>> and Ip>>>) for both HV & LV side independently. 2. 3 stages of 3Io (Internally derived EF) (3Io>, 3Io>> and 3Io>>>) for both HV & LV side independently. 3. Negative Phase Sequence for both HV & LV side independently. 4. One Restricted Earth Fault. Others 1. Monitoring Functions. 2. Relay / Led configuration. 3. Trip Circuit Supervision.

The relay support dual bias characteristic. The bias (slop 1) is settable from 10% to 50% this is a normal bias characteristic. The relay follows this characteristic up to Ibx become equal to 2nd Bias I setting. During heavy through fault due to CT saturation large difference current might generate, which leads to mal operation of relay. To prevent mal operation during such heavy through fault the relay is provided with dual bias characteristic. In which after 2nd Bias I setting the relay changes it bias setting from set Bias slope I value to set Bias slope 2 automatically.

Overexciting/Over fluxing Protection.(V/f 24): Transformer over fluxing can be a result of Overvoltage Low system frequency A transformer is designed to operate at or below a maximum magnetic flux density in the transformer core. Above this design limit the eddy currents in the core and nearby conductive components cause overheating which within a very short time may cause severe damage. The magnetic flux in the core is proportional to the voltage applied to the winding divided by the frequency of the winding. The flux in the core increases with either increasing voltage or decreasing frequency. During startup or shutdown of generator-connected transformers, or following a load rejection, the transformer may experience an excessive ratio of volts to hertz, that is, become overexcited. When a transformer core is overexcited, the core is operating in a nonlinear magnetic region, and creates harmonic components in the exciting current. A significant amount of current at the 5th harmonic is characteristic of over excitation Over excitation results from excessive applied voltage, possibly in combination with below-

normal frequency. Such condition may occur when a unit is on load, but are more likely to arise when it is on open circuit, or at a loss of load occurrence. Over excitation will result in: overheating of the non-laminated metal parts, a large increase in magnetizing currents, an increase in core and winding temperature, an increase in transformer vibration and noise. Over excitation protection detects impermissible high magnetic flux densitiy in the iron core of power transformers which can occur in case of increase in voltage and/or decrease in frequency. Flux density above the rated value saturates the iron core which may result in power transformer overheating due to large iron losses. Overexcitation protection processes the voltage to frequency ratio (V/f) in relation to their nominal values. In addition a definite-time alarm stage and IEEE time delay is available. The IEEE time delay is calculated as:

IEEE : t = (0.18*K)/(M - 1)2 M = (V/f measure)/(V/f Setting)

Breaker Failure Detection : Normally after tripping the current should become Zero within 100 200ms time depending upon type of fault and breaker mechanism. After Fault ADR233B relay triggers internal timer (settable from 0.1s to 1.0s) if fault is not cleared during this time then relay declare as Breaker fail (LBB function) and change another contacts. This contact is marked as Breaker Fail can be used to TRIP back up breaker or can be used to generate ALARM signal. Programmable DI/DO and LED : The ADR233B has 11 digital outputs, 10 optoisolated input and 7 general purpose Dual LEDs. These can be programmed by local key board. Any logical of physical status can be assigned to any relay contact The logic of digital status input as well as logical status can be formed and assigned to any of the relay output. The

disturbance record can be trigger from external logical input.

Monitoring Functions (Event, Disturbance Record) : Apart from basic protection functions. Relay continuously monitors all substation operations through status, it internal functions, internal hardware etc. if any changed is observed it is marked as event. Such type of events are stored in internal non-volatile memory along with time stamped. Following are some of the events. Relay PKP, Relay Reset, CB Trip, CB close, changed of any digital status input, Relay setting changed etc. Up to 100 such event can be stored and can be download for detailed analysis. Apart from Event record Relay also record actual waveform of current along with all digital and logical status during fault condition. Up to 10 such waveforms can be recorded; the duration of disturbance record is 3 sec. The disturbance record can
