What Everyone Should Know ai A Culminating Project Overview ‘This Culminating Project challenges students to create an illustrated book describing modern Africa that answers this question: What eight key ideas should everyone know about modern Africa? Working in pairs, students create books with four sections: Overview of Africa, Nigeria, South Africa, and African Cultural Connections to the United States. After outlining their ideas, students write books—complete with visuals-—that desoribe eight key aspects of modern Africa. The book is written for a fifth-grade audience and should demonstrate a clear understanding of the unit’s major historical issues and legacies. This culminating project challenges students to create an illustrated book that explains cight key ideas about modern Africa that everyone should know. The book, which will be in the shape of Africa, should be ditected toward a fifth-grade audience. To create the hook, students are required to synthesize the key ideas from the unit’s most important topics. This culminating project may be used as the final activity of the unit or as a formal unit assessment. 2. Place students into mixed-ability pairs. Give each student CP Student Handout A: Creating an Illustrated Book About Modern Africa, which clearly sets forth the project topic, overview, and requirements. Review these thoroughly with your students, and answer any questions they have, Emphasize that the focus of their book is to explain cight key ideas about modern Africa that everyone should know. 3, Pass out CP Student Handout B: Illustrated Book Project Evaluation to each student, Review the standards for assessment with students, Determine the points possible for cach category. Allow students to complete the self-assessment column when they tum in their projects. 4, Once students have a general understanding of the project's requirements and standards for assessment, pass out CP Student Handout C: Brainstorming Ideas for an Illustrated Book About Moder Africa, Have pairs complete the matrix, which asks them to list eight of the most important ideas they learned about in the unit and to make sketches of ! visuals to represent them. Before pairs begin the final draft of their book, have pairs bring their matrices to you, Carefully review what they have writ(en and encourage them to make their ideas clearly reflect important concepts in the unit. 5. Allow pairs adequate time to work on their books. Encourage them to incorporate as much of their existing work from the unit into the book as possible, and help them to locate other resources, Remind students to write their books for a 10-year-old audience.
