History of the Company

HISTORY OF ANILAO

NAME ORIGIN

Like other towns along the coast of the island of Panay, Anilao was founded by a group of fishermen during the pre- Spanish period. Its name was derived from the Anilao tree (Scientific name- Columbia Polyandria Anilao) which grows abundantly along the bank of Anilao River. This tree has economic value to Anilaonons then. Its bark is excellent for pounding into bark cloth. It is also good container for tapucal an aromatic method of preserving krill which is inherently Anilaonon s. Its banlot is also good for rope making.

FORMER TOWNSITE

The former town site was along the western bank near the mouth of Anilao River. The thick mangrove forest in the swamp bordering the mouth of the river provided fishing boats a good shelter during typhoons. Accessibility to the sea and the farms seemed to be the reason behind this town site.

RECORDED HISTORY

Religious history antidated political history by such as much as forty-two years as far as recorded history of Anilao is concerned. In 1714, Anilao was already mentioned as a visita in the archives of the Order of Saint Augustine while the first Gobernadorcillo, Don Juan Pagdalanon, was appointed and served in 1756. However this should not be taken to mean that Anilao has no political history before 1756.

FORM OF GOVERNMENT

As to what form of government did this pre- Spanish Village have is not known. We can just rely chiefly on the information given by the Spanish writers of early Philippine state organization. Anilao was made a pueblo in 1756 by the Spaniards and governed by a gobernadorcillo. The first gobernadorcillo was Don Juan Pagdalanon. The neighboring pueblos then were Laglag (now Dueas) on the North, Ajuy on the east, Araout (now Dumangas) on the southwest and the swamps and the sea on the south.

TRANSFER OF TOWN SITE

In the year 1800, under the leadership of Gobernadorcillo Don Juan Laureano, the Anilaonons moved their Pueblo to the present town site. It is approximately a kilometer and a half from the town site. It is approximately a kilometer and a half from the former pueblo. The distance of the new pueblo form the sea coast stopped the Moro marauders from the molesting the inhabitants. The following year Don Juan Rafael became the Gobernadorcillo. He directed the formation of the present town site and the construction of public buildings of the pueblo. In 1822, the head of the pueblo was no longer called gobernadorcillo but acalde. This lasted for two years only, for in 1824 it was restored again to gobernadorcillo.

TWO YEAR TERM AND THE DARK YEARS

The term of the gobernadorcillo was lengthened to two years by virtue of the decree issued in 1863. Don Justiniano Araneta was appointed Gobernadorcillo in this year. On July 18, 1880 earthquake was felt in the pueblo. Don Carlos Cabagal was the gobernadorcillo.
