THE DOG FIGHTER AND THE DOG LOVER

The Dog Fighter and the Dog Lover

Not all Pit dog men are angels, of course, but I have been blessed in knowing some of the most honorable and reputable ones, and they
compare quite favorably in dog knowledge and compassion with ANY dog people. Of course, Wallace was mainly concerned with perpetuating
a line of dogs and only matched a dog occasionally in order to test the worth of his Strain against others. Still, he referred to himself as a
dogfighter, and he lived in an era when a person could be somewhat more open about Pit dog activities than these days.

In his early and middle years, Wallace was an enthusiastic bird hunter, and one of his partners on these hunts was a municipal Judge. In fact,
they often used the judge’s dog, a Pointer, on their forays. Occasionally, talk would get around to Bulldogs and would inevitably evoke the
same response from the Judge: “Bob, I just don’t know how you can fight those dogs. I’m such a dog lover, I just can’t understand such a thing.
There isn’t anything I love more than a dog.” Bob, not gifted with infinite patience, would swallow his anger and try to explain the Pit dog Game
and how even a dog lover could participate – but to no avail. Like so many other people, the judge’s mind was not open to new or different
ideas.

Despite the occasional little mealy-mouthed diatribes by the Judge, the friendship between the two men endured and they remained hunting
partners. One day, the Judge showed up with a new dog for the hunt, and naturally Bob inquired about the old one. “Oh, old Jack was
getting too old to hunt well, so I gave him away.” When Bob inquired who got the dog, the Judge replied he didn’t know the person’s
name; it was “just someone he had met on the road.” This rankled Wallace considerably, but at least for a time, he said nothing. However,
the next time his friend Started his prattle about Bob fighting his dogs and how he himself as a dog lover couldn’t understand it, Wallace
exploded!

“Yes, you’re a dog lover, all right!” said Wallace in a voice that rattled the timbers. (His natural voice is quite loud, anyway, low in
tone and unintentionally ominous in effect.) “Here Jack spent all those years valiantly working his heart out for you, at your beck and
call, and slave to your every whim. And how do you repay him for this love? When he gets too old to hunt up to your expectations,
you discard him like an old shoe. And you don’t even make sure you find him a good home. No, you just give him to some stranger,
and you have no idea what care he is getting. Well, if that is what a dog lover is, I’m glad I’m a dogfighter!”

So taken aback was the Judge by Wallace’s rebuke that he spent several weeks trying to locate his old dog. And he never again said anything
about Bob being a dogfighter.

Great Read. If you aint a dog lover then you dont need to have dogs. Mr. Wallace was a true dog lover from all I have ever heard.

I have found that 9 times out of 10 your wasting your breath. Until they choose to lift the veil of ignorance, most pet owners cannot get their
narrow minds to encompass the idea that there are people that value the working ability in their dogs and aren't willing to lose it just to prove
their machismo.

OK then my mind is open please explain to me how a dog lover can participate in such a 'sport' ? I own 2 American Pit Bull Terriers who live in
my house with me and my family .So yes please do explain as I would like to know and understand.

In my opinion both men were wronge , the one man from getting rid of his Pointer and the other from participating in such a so called 'sport'

Again I ask please explain it to me .

Well, it's like this.....Have you ever

listened to a pack of beagles hot on the trail of a rabbit...yapping & barking, doing their job, happy as can be.....
listened to the baying of a happy pack of coon dogs, doing what they do best, running and treeing the coon, sounding off to their owners to
locate them, to be pulled off the tree, the whole time barking and begging their masters to just let them have it.....
watched the working Labrador Retriever, jumping in frigid water to retrieve the duck his owner just shot.....happy the whole time, wagging his
tail in jubilee, happy to do what he was bred for.
watching a patterdale terrier or jack russell terrier, course a barn and take out raccoons bigger than they are....by true grit, perseverance and
determination.
Same as the Gamedog, doing what it was bred to do, tail wagging the whole time, held high, eyes bright with excitement, begging it's owner to
let me go.
VERY few dogs were bred to be companion couch potatoes. Most were bred for specific duties, and in some people's opinion, NOT using
them for their intentions is corrupting it's breed and making inferior stock.
I hope that helps....but sometimes this saying holds true...
"Those who know, can't explain........those who don't, wouldn't understand"

Have you reported this site yet? And exactly what for? Not having the same idea's and ideals as yourself. This Website is to promote the APBT
true heritage, and NO we do not shy away or deny our magnificent dogs past, We are not germans who were on holiday between 39-45 lol.
The past isn't pretty for our breed but it is what it is, you either embrace it and work to better the breed as a Whole.

most beautiful thing about a working APBT , is when the owner picks up his dog Game, the dog is so tired and exhausted breathing deeply
looks messed up but the dog is wagging his tail and smiling at his owner.

or when the dog is on the ground can get up from exhaustion and looks at his owner and wags his tail... that is AWESOM.

thats the part i love bout the whole game..if you dont feel, than you most likely will never will.

some people work their dogs just to get entertained, and some work them to see the Gameness in them and t see the reactions of their dogs
when it gets tough

i cant explain it any better.
