Roll-O-Matic Front Wheels
Both the Models "50" and "60" Tractors are available with famous Roll-0Matic "knee-action" Front Wheelsan exclusive John Deere feature which provides easier, smoother operation in practically every condition. With Roll0-Matic, the slightest up or down movement of either wheel is transferred through gears which automatically equalize the load on both wheels. As a result, front-end bounce is cut in half and it takes just a guiding hand on the wheel to operate the tractor in rough fields. Roll-O-Matic is optional equipment for tractors with either the onepiece or special two-piece front pedestal.

Adjustable Front Axle

Equipped with two-piece pedestal, the Models "50" and "60" can be furnished with a variety of front-wheel equipment, including the adjustable front axle shown left. It has a maximum oscillating range of 14-1/2 to 20-3/4 inches, and front wheel tread is adjustable from 56 to 80 inches in 4-inch steps. For growers of wide-spaced row crops, special long rear axles are available to provide rear-wheel tread settings up to 104 inches depending upon tire sizes used. Either 38- or 42-inch diameter tires are available. Clearance under front axle is from 22 to 24 inches; under rear axle, from 24-1/2 to 27-1/2 inches, depending upon equipment. (4)

your row-crop tractor needs

Single Front Wheel
The single front-wheel models are ideal for working in irrigated sections and in narrow-row crops. Here again, John Deere offers a wide choice of tire and axle equipment. A variety of rear tire sizes is available to meet every need. Either regular or long rear axles are available to match row spacings desired. Clearance under axle housing is the same as for the adjustable front axle models. The single front wheel bolts securely to the two-piece front pedestal. It is easy to put on or take off and is interchangeable with the other types of front-end assemblies.

Long Rear Axle

The illustration at right shows one of the new models equipped with a special long rear axle. With 9-42 or 1142 tires on this axle, you can secure a maximum rear-wheel tread of 104 inches as shown here, down to a minimum of 56 inches or any setting in between. With 10-38 or 11-38 tires on the "50" and either 11-38 or 12-38 tires on the "60," the long rear axle provides a tread range of approximately 62 to 97 inches. Here is complete adaptability to the needs of farmers who raise crops grown in wide-spaced rows. The long rear axle can be furnished for Models "50" and "60" Tractors equipped with adjustable front axle or single front wheel.

38-Inch Front Tread

The Models "50" and "60" can be equipped with the 38-inch fixed front tread, shown left, to meet exacting requirements in certain bedded territories where crops are grown in 36-, 38-, and 40-inch rows. This front end is particularly desirable where fall bedding is followed by re-bedding in the spring. The front tractor wheels straddle the old beds and make it extremely easy to handle the tractor as the front tires follow the furrows. This fixed-tread front axle bolts securely to the two-piece front pedestal and is quickly replaced with regular or Roll-0Matic dual front wheels.

Great New Engines bring you

J
OHN DEERE engineers have worked wonders in stepping up performance of the new "50" and "60" Tractors equipped with gasoline-burning engines. They have taken a page from the book of airplane and racingcar engine designers and developed a double-barrelled carburetor that meters the fuel-air mixture in identical amounts to each cylinder and provides these new tractors with Duplex Carburetion. This revolutionary development in tractor enginesexclusive with John Deere provides more snap and quicker response . . . outstanding economy . .. and smoother engine operation. Because Duplex Carburetion, in effect, provides a carburetor for each cylinder, you'll find the Models "50" and "60" Tractors start faster in all temperatures, idle better, and offer prolonged spark plug life. Another brand-new feature of the "50" and "60" Tractors is the hot-and-cold adjustment of the manifold which provides for maximum engine efficiency in both winter and summer. During warm weather months, the two-position adjustment valve is set in the "Cold" position and the burned gases are expelled directly into the exhaust stack, keeping the incoming fuel mixture at proper temperature. When the valve is turned to the "Hot" position, the exhaust gases are diverted through channels surrounding the fuel and air passageways. This pre-heats each fuel-air charge on its way to the combustion chamber to provide more efficient vaporization, more complete combustion, and better all-around performance in cold weather. In combination with new Duplex Carburetion and hot and-cold manifold, the "50" and "60" Tractors offer ex clusive cyclonic-fuel-intake. An eyebrow over each intake valve directs the incoming fuel-air charge downward, creating a cyclonic turbulence which insures more thorough mixing of fuel and air, better combustion, maxi mum efficiency and greater economy. A glance at the illustration at right will show you these major engine advancements, but only through a field demonstration will you fully appreciate the new power and economy advantages they offer you. (8)

The illustration above shows the "Cold" setting of the manifold valve. In this position, the burned gases are expelled directly into the exhaust, keeping the fuel mixture cooler in hot weather.

"Live"Power Shaft speeds up

HE new John Deere "live" power shaft* is a major engineering advancement. It provides continuous power for operating PTO machines as long as the tractor engine is runningpower that is completely independent of the transmission clutch. This great new John Deere feature reduces clogging of equipment to the very minimum because you can declutch the tractor and clear the power-driven machine the instant it takes on an overloadre-engage your clutch in a jiffy and continue on your way. There's no time lost in shifting to neutral and re-engaging the transmission clutch in order to operate the power shaft no declutching and shifting to forward gear before you're ready to go again. Seldom if ever will you have to get off the tractor and clean out the power-driven machine by hand because when you declutch the tractor and stop taking in more of the crop, the continuous-running power shaft clears the machine before plugging can take place. In extremely heavy conditions, the exclusive low gear in the Models "50" and "60" Tractors and the "live" power shaft make an ideal crop-saving combination. You can "creep" along at 1-1/2 mph with the power shaft operating at full rpm, harvesting heavy crops with minimum loss. Exclusive Design The "live" power shaft on the new John Deere Models "50" and "60" Tractors is engineered for trouble-free operation, and quality built to give years of service. A sliding gear and shaft transmit power through the power train to a springloaded, over-center, wet-disk type clutch. Engaging the clutch delivers power to the splined PIO shaft which drives the equipment. The power shaft clutch is an outstanding feature. It enables you to bring the power-driven machine up to full speed before starting the forward travel of the tractor and it completely protects the PTO shaft and cushions shock on the implement. Even with the engine at wide open throttle, you can engage the clutch instantly without damage. The power shaft clutch has an independent oil reservoir and lubrication system; it operates in a constant bath of oil supplied by a separate pump. When the tractor is used for other work, the sliding gear and shaft may be disengaged. Both shift and clutch levers are convenient to the operator on the tractor seat and are easy to operate.

"Live" High-Pressure Powr-Trol

J
OHN DEERE pioneered the application of hydraulic power to operating tractor-mounted equipment in 1933. This was followed in 1945 by the introduction of Powr-Trolthe first dual hydraulic system to control both integral and drawn tools. No other hydraulic system has been so enthusiastically accepted by farmers. Powr-Trol has proved to be unequalled for dependable operation in all field conditions ... for adaptability to practically every type of tractor-powered equipment on the farm . . . and for its time-saving, muscle-saving and better-work advantages.

Now, in the new Models "50" and "60" Tractors, John Deere brings you "live" high-pressure Powr-Trol ever-ready hydraulic power that operates completely independent of both the transmission clutch and the power take-off. This outstanding new advantage saves up to 40 per cent of the time and effort formerly required in clutching and shifting gears when operating a manure loader . . . in hooking or unhooking tool carrier attachments . . . or whenever the tractor travel must be stopped and the equipment operated by hydraulic power. A second important advantage of "live" high-pressure Powr-Trol is its increased capacity that enables you to handle heavier tractor equipment. A new-type, direct engine-driven pump operates at high speed, providing greatly increased hydraulic pressures to actuate both the rockshafts for controlling integral tools and the remote cylinder for drawn equipment. A Proved Time and Labor Saver Powr-Trol provides instant, accurate, effortless control of mounted and drawn equipmentfurnishes hydraulic power to angle and straighten disk gangs .. . raise and lower other tools ... or to set them at any desired positionall at a touch of your hand, without stopping or even slowing down. It's the proved hydraulic system that saves you time and muscle and insures better work on practically every farm job.

"Live" hydraulic power is a big advantage in operating a manure loader because it saves up to 40% of the shifting and clutching formerly required. Shown above is the Model "60" Tractor with the new No. 50 Hydraulic Loader.

Exclusive
SIMPLICITY
The greater simplicity of John Deere

two-cylinder engine design is a proved

fact. As the illustration at the right shows, there are only two cylinders, two pistons, two connecting rodscorrespondingly fewer valves, bearings, rings, and other moving parts to wear and require eventual replacement. The same simplicity is carried right on through the entire tractorwith fewer gears in the transmission . . . only one joint in the steering mechanism, etc.

Exclusive
STRENGTH OF PARTS
Extra weight and strength are other fundamental advantages of John Deere two-cylinder tractor design. Parts are larger, heavier, strongerbigger pistons . . . heavier crankshaft . . . more rugged gears and shafts . . . stronger frame and housing construction. The transmission and final drive gears, shown at the left, are typical of the ruggedness that enables a John Deere to stand up under the punishment of grueling farm work for a longer time. (14)

John Deere t cylinder engine design was born back in 1924 with the introduction of the first tractor to bear the John Deere name. Right from the start, the simple, rugged construction of that tractor proved itself. Here was unequalled simplicityfewer parts to wear, to cause trouble, to require eventual replacement . . . greater accessibility . . . easier, lowe-cost maintenance. Here was unmatched strength of parts for more dependable performance, more years of service. No wonder more and more farmers bought John Deere Tractors as the years went by. No wonder John Deere steadfastly continued to develop and improve upon the "two-cylinder idea"the totally-different, more practical tractor engine design that set the standards for dependability, economy, and long life. These same basic advantages are just as important in a tractor today as they were more than a quarter of a century ago. They're yours to enjoy, yours to profit by, along with every modern operating feature, when you choose a new John Deere Model "50" or "60" Tractor.

DRIVING FORCE
The illustration at the left shows the crankshaft assembly of a John Deere twocj linder tractor. Crankshaft, flywheel, connecting rods, pistons, and belt pulleyall rotating engine parts are heavier. As a consequence, they store up a tremendous amount of driving force which carries the tractor right through tough spots in the field. You'll appreciate this extra lugging powerit means dollars in your pocket because work is done in less time with greater efficiency.

Exclusive
WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
In this phantom iew at right, notice that the heavy engine parts are located well toward the rear. Notice, also, that the weight of transmission, differential, and final drive is carried on the rear wheels, with just enough weight on the front to insure easy steering and stability. As a result of this better weight distribution, you get maximum traction there is less wheel slippage to waste power and fuel . . . more weight for maximum pull in tough conditions (16)

Gone is the manual effort and time-consuming annoyance of constantly shifting gears and engaging and disengaging the clutch to operate power-driven or hydraulically controlled equipment. The new "live" power shaft and new "live" Powr-Trol operate independently of each other and of the transmission clutch, providing ever-ready power as long as the tractor engine is running. In the illustration at left, notice that the high, centered seat places the operator up, well out of the dust and dirtin a commanding position. This seat position and the tapered design of the fuel tank offer an almost perfect view of the work ahead and to either side without straining. The deep-cushion seat is comfortable and fully adjustable and there's a platform with plenty of room for standing to relieve fatigue during long hours at the wheel or when traveling over rough ground. You can stand up as easily and naturally as rising from a chair, and the hand clutch gives you complete control of the tractor from this position. QuickChange Wheel Tread

Left: With the hub free on the axle, the wheel is easily and quickly moved in or out to the exact setting desired by turning the adjusting nut with the regular tractor lug wrench.

Above: With a Model "50" or "60," it's easy to check the wheel tread and obtain the exact setting desired. Simply insert the end of a steel tape in the center-line slot, located below the seat, and measure to the center of the tire.

The new John Deere Quick-Change Wheel Tread is an outstanding feature. It permits quick, easy adjustability of rear wheels for different row spacings. There's no more lifting, hammering, or tugging; no removal of either wheel; no reversing of wheels from side to side to obtain the full tread range of 56 to 88 inches. As the illustrations on this page show, all you have to do is jack up one wheel at a time ... loosen three clamp screws which hold the wheel in position . . . tighten two jack screws to free the wheel on the axle . . . and turn an adjusting nut to move the wheel in or out. It takes but little effort to obtain the exact settings desired. To relock, merely back off the jack screws and tighten the clamp screws. The maximum travel of each wheel on its axle is 8-1/2 inches, giving a wheel-tread range of 17 inches in each of four rim settings. By simply changing the position of the rim on the wheel, you can obtain any wheel-tread setting between 56 and 88 inches. Here's another great John Deere timeand labor-saving feature.

Unexcelled View
John Deere General-Purpose Tractors always have led the field in providing a clear, unobstructed view of the work from a natural, relaxed position on the seat. The high, centered seat location and the tapered fuel tank have been retained in the new models. To improve visibility still further, the air intake stack has been removed and the intake relocated under the grille. In addition, the exhaust muffler has been moved to the right, to provide center-line visibility. If you need maximum clearance for working under low sheds and through low doorways, you can quickly replace the regular exhaust muffler with the special rear exhaust muffler, shown in dark green shade in the illustration below. It takes just a few minutes to make the change. The exhaust fumes are carried to the rear and discharged away from the operator. This attachment is ideal when operating a manure loader or doing odd jobs around the feed lot where extra clearance is needed. A metal cap, which replaces the upright exhaust stack and covers the hood, is furnished with the rear exhaust muffler.

This field scene shows the unexcelled view you'll enjoy ahead and to either side. Notice the new center-line visibility. Notice, also, that the cultivator has been designed with a minimum of brace bars in line of view.

You'll really appreciate the new, effortless steering that's been engineered into the John Deere Models "50" and "60" Tractors. It greatly reduces fatigueyou can make round after round, spend long hours in the field at the wheel without strain or the feel of tired, aching muscles. Even when the tractor is standing still, the front wheels can be turned with very little effort.

The illustration above shows a cutaway of the new steering mechanism. The worm and a full gear form the only joint in the entire steering mechanism. Both are highly finished to reduce friction; fully enclosed and automatically lubricated. The full gear is reversible for double life. Increased gear ratio and the ball-thrust bearing at the base of the pedestal on both models are additional important factors in easier steering.

lusive Roll-O-Matic Front Wheels

handling and comfort
There's new driving ease . . . new riding comfort . new smoothness of operation with a Model "50" or "60" Tractor equipped with this great John Deere featureRoll-O-Matic "knee-action" Front Wheels. You can't help but notice the differencein the easier, smoother, surer-footed way the tractor steers over rough ground . . . on sidehills . . . in furrows ... on top of beds ... along the contour ... in practically all operating conditions. There's no fighting the wheel, no creeping, no weaving from side to side. Steering is much easier because the load is always equalized between both front wheels. Riding is greatly improved because up-

and-down movement of the front end is cut exactly in half as the tractor travels over rough ground. With
just a guiding hand on the wheel, the tractor literally climbs out of furrows . .. "walks" right over obstructions . . . operates in rough fields with greater stability. At the left, are two John Deere Tractors. One is equipped with conventional rigid front wheels; the other with Roll-O-Matic. The left front tires of both are resting on a rock 5 inches high. Notice that the entire front end of the conventional tractor has been forced to rise the full 5 inches and that one tire is taking the full load. Now look at the tractor equipped with Roll-O-Matic. Here, the rise is only 2-1/2 inchesexactly half that of the conventional tractorand each tire is taking its full share of the load. By minimizing the up-and-down movement of the front end and equalizing the load between both front wheels, Roll-O-Matic provides a smoother, more comfortable ride, and greatly increases front tire life.

Here's How It Works

This cutaway view shows how Roll-O-Matic operates. The slightest up or down movement of either wheel is immediately transferred through gears, which automatically equalize the load on both front tires. Here, the right front wheel has encountered a field obstruction which has raised it, automatically forcing the other wheel down and allowing the tractor to ride over with ease. This construction is simple and fool-proof. Forged steel gears and knuckles are built with a margin of strength to stand up under greater shocks and strains than will ever be encountered in normal field operations. Wheels are reversible to give greater clearance and prevent "balling up" in extremely muddy conditions.

The "creeper" gear of 1-1/2 mph is ideal for drawbar jobs requiring slow travel speed, and for maintaining maximum power shaft output when operating power-driven machines at slow speed. It is a decided advantage in transplanting . . . in operating a combine, corn picker, or ensilage harvester under certain conditions ... in spraying fruit trees ... in close cultivation of specialty crops ... and in other conditions requiring this slower speed for best work.

These field-proved brakes are quickacting, dependable, and positive in action. They are equipped with latches for parking the tractor on grades or holding it to work on belt jobs. Adjusting these brakes is a simple, easy job that's done from the outside without special tools, as shown by the illustration at left.

THERMOSTATICALLYA trouble-free water pump and a thermostatically-controlled radiator shutter are provided in the "50" and "60" Tractors to maintain most efficient engine operating temperature. The water pump provides a constant forced circulation of water. It is belt driven, has a completely sealed ball bearing, and requires no lubrication. The radiator shutter is regulated automatically through linkage with the sensitive thermostat shown below the shutter in the illustration at the right.

EASY-TO-CLEAN SCREEN
The new radiator grille not only i mproves the appearance but it also serves a useful purpose in eliminating clogging of the radiator core. Any particles of dirt or chaff small enough to pass through the fine mesh screen will normally pass on through the core. There is no longer any need to flush out the core in order to clean it properly. Any trash that may accumulate in the grille is easily removed by simply running your fingers down the flutes as shown by the inset illustration at left.

BIG-CAPACITY FUEL TANK

The Models "50" and "60" Tractors are equipped with big-capacity fuel tanks, assuring an ample fuel supply for a long half-day's operation even in the most severe conditions. Equipped with gasoline engine, the Model "50" holds 16 gallons and the Model "60," 20-1/2 gallons. Equipped for allfuel engines, the fuel tank capacities are the same but a onegallon auxiliary tank containing gasoline for starting purposes is added. An accurate, inexpensive fuel gauge can be furnished as extra equipment.

CONTROLLED SHUTTER

FULLY ADJUSTABLE DRAWBAR

The drawbar frame is of welded, one-piece construction and exceptionally strong. The drawbar is fully adjustable without the use of tools. By simply lifting one pin, you can adjust it forward or backward. You change the vertical position of the drawbar by merely sliding it out, turning it over, and sliding it back in the frame. The drawbar can be locked in any fixed position or it can be used as a swinging drawbar. ( 33 )

Safeguarded Quality Construction

wall the way through
In every respect, the new John Deere "50" and "60" Tractors are as safeguarded in design and as automatic in operation as modern engineering methods can devise. The complete enclosure of engine, transmission and differential in oil-tight, dustproof cases . . . the effective sealing of main bearings, front wheel bearings, axle bearings . . . the oil-wash air cleaner . . . full-flow oil filter . . . efficient fuel strainerall safeguard the new models against the entrance of dust and dirt and prolong tractor life. The precision working parts of the engines are automatically lubricated by a full-pressure, force-feed system. Lubrication of the transmission and differential is thorough, unfailing in its operation, and entirely automatic.

Automatic Crankcase Ventilation

This exclusive crankcase ventilation system provides a constant circulation of air throughout the crankcase as long as the engine is running, to expel harmful fuel vapors and prevent the formation of sludge. The cutaway illustration above shows how this improved automatic ventilation system works. Air that has been cleaned by passing through the air cleaner is drawn through a pipetapped in the air inlet elbowand forced into the crankcase by a new-type rotor pump. The air circulates throughout the crankcase collecting harmful vapors and is then expelled out through a vent ahead of the tappet-case cover. The crankcase ventilation system is entirely automatic and goes a long way toward keeping the engine clean and providing longer, more dependable service.

Before any oil can reach pistons, bearings, and other parts of the engine, it is forced through an efficient, replaceable full-flow oil filter which removes abrasives to maintain the oil in good condition.
