Sliding gear and drive shafts operate ( 11 ) in transmission oil. Clutch is lubricated by a separate oil reservoir and pump. Crankcase-lubricated parts are shown in red. Power shaft levers are shown in dark green.
Now, in the new Models "50" and "60" Tractors, John Deere brings you "live" high-pressure Powr-Trol ever-ready hydraulic power that operates completely independent of both the transmission clutch and the power take-off. This outstanding new advantage saves up to 40 per cent of the time and effort formerly required in clutching and shifting gears when operating a manure loader . . . in hooking or unhooking tool carrier attachments . . . or whenever the tractor travel must be stopped and the equipment operated by hydraulic power. A second important advantage of "live" high-pressure Powr-Trol is its increased capacity that enables you to handle heavier tractor equipment. A new-type, direct engine-driven pump operates at high speed, providing greatly increased hydraulic pressures to actuate both the rockshafts for controlling integral tools and the remote cylinder for drawn equipment. A Proved Time and Labor Saver Powr-Trol provides instant, accurate, effortless control of mounted and drawn equipmentfurnishes hydraulic power to angle and straighten disk gangs .. . raise and lower other tools ... or to set them at any desired positionall at a touch of your hand, without stopping or even slowing down. It's the proved hydraulic system that saves you time and muscle and insures better work on practically every farm job.
"Live" hydraulic power is a big advantage in operating a manure loader because it saves up to 40% of the shifting and clutching formerly required. Shown above is the Model "60" Tractor with the new No. 50 Hydraulic Loader.

STRENGTH OF PARTS
Extra weight and strength are other fundamental advantages of John Deere two-cylinder tractor design. Parts are larger, heavier, strongerbigger pistons . . . heavier crankshaft . . . more rugged gears and shafts . . . stronger frame and housing construction. The transmission and final drive gears, shown at the left, are typical of the ruggedness that enables a John Deere to stand up under the punishment of grueling farm work for a longer time. (14)

DRIVING FORCE
The illustration at the left shows the crankshaft assembly of a John Deere twocj linder tractor. Crankshaft, flywheel, connecting rods, pistons, and belt pulleyall rotating engine parts are heavier. As a consequence, they store up a tremendous amount of driving force which carries the tractor right through tough spots in the field. You'll appreciate this extra lugging powerit means dollars in your pocket because work is done in less time with greater efficiency.
Exclusive
WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
In this phantom iew at right, notice that the heavy engine parts are located well toward the rear. Notice, also, that the weight of transmission, differential, and final drive is carried on the rear wheels, with just enough weight on the front to insure easy steering and stability. As a result of this better weight distribution, you get maximum traction there is less wheel slippage to waste power and fuel . . . more weight for maximum pull in tough conditions (16)

Gone is the manual effort and time-consuming annoyance of constantly shifting gears and engaging and disengaging the clutch to operate power-driven or hydraulically controlled equipment. The new "live" power shaft and new "live" Powr-Trol operate independently of each other and of the transmission clutch, providing ever-ready power as long as the tractor engine is running. In the illustration at left, notice that the high, centered seat places the operator up, well out of the dust and dirtin a commanding position. This seat position and the tapered design of the fuel tank offer an almost perfect view of the work ahead and to either side without straining. The deep-cushion seat is comfortable and fully adjustable and there's a platform with plenty of room for standing to relieve fatigue during long hours at the wheel or when traveling over rough ground. You can stand up as easily and naturally as rising from a chair, and the hand clutch gives you complete control of the tractor from this position. All controls are convenient and easy to operatethrottle . . . hand clutch . . . gear shift .. . Powr-Trol . . . power shaft . . . electric starter . . . and differential foot brakes. Directly in front of the operator is a full-view instrument panel containing the gauges and a new, easilyreached combination-type switch which controls ignition . . . bright front and rear field lights . . . bright or dim front lights, and red rear warning lamp. A panel light illuminates the instrument panel. Here is operator convenience and comfort such as you've never before experienced.

A
The new John Deere Quick-Change Wheel Tread is an outstanding feature. It permits quick, easy adjustability of rear wheels for different row spacings. There's no more lifting, hammering, or tugging; no removal of either wheel; no reversing of wheels from side to side to obtain the full tread range of 56 to 88 inches. As the illustrations on this page show, all you have to do is jack up one wheel at a time ... loosen three clamp screws which hold the wheel in position . . . tighten two jack screws to free the wheel on the axle . . . and turn an adjusting nut to move the wheel in or out. It takes but little effort to obtain the exact settings desired. To relock, merely back off the jack screws and tighten the clamp screws. The maximum travel of each wheel on its axle is 8-1/2 inches, giving a wheel-tread range of 17 inches in each of four rim settings. By simply changing the position of the rim on the wheel, you can obtain any wheel-tread setting between 56 and 88 inches. Here's another great John Deere timeand labor-saving feature.

Unexcelled View
John Deere General-Purpose Tractors always have led the field in providing a clear, unobstructed view of the work from a natural, relaxed position on the seat. The high, centered seat location and the tapered fuel tank have been retained in the new models. To improve visibility still further, the air intake stack has been removed and the intake relocated under the grille. In addition, the exhaust muffler has been moved to the right, to provide center-line visibility. If you need maximum clearance for working under low sheds and through low doorways, you can quickly replace the regular exhaust muffler with the special rear exhaust muffler, shown in dark green shade in the illustration below. It takes just a few minutes to make the change. The exhaust fumes are carried to the rear and discharged away from the operator. This attachment is ideal when operating a manure loader or doing odd jobs around the feed lot where extra clearance is needed. A metal cap, which replaces the upright exhaust stack and covers the hood, is furnished with the rear exhaust muffler.
This field scene shows the unexcelled view you'll enjoy ahead and to either side. Notice the new center-line visibility. Notice, also, that the cultivator has been designed with a minimum of brace bars in line of view.
Left: Here's a John Deere Model "50" Tractor equipped with the special rear exhaust muffler for farmers who want maximum clearance. The muffler and tail pipe, shown in dark green, are securely attached to the tractor.

The illustration above shows a cutaway of the new steering mechanism. The worm and a full gear form the only joint in the entire steering mechanism. Both are highly finished to reduce friction; fully enclosed and automatically lubricated. The full gear is reversible for double life. Increased gear ratio and the ball-thrust bearing at the base of the pedestal on both models are additional important factors in easier steering.

and-down movement of the front end is cut exactly in half as the tractor travels over rough ground. With
just a guiding hand on the wheel, the tractor literally climbs out of furrows . .. "walks" right over obstructions . . . operates in rough fields with greater stability. At the left, are two John Deere Tractors. One is equipped with conventional rigid front wheels; the other with Roll-O-Matic. The left front tires of both are resting on a rock 5 inches high. Notice that the entire front end of the conventional tractor has been forced to rise the full 5 inches and that one tire is taking the full load. Now look at the tractor equipped with Roll-O-Matic. Here, the rise is only 2-1/2 inchesexactly half that of the conventional tractorand each tire is taking its full share of the load. By minimizing the up-and-down movement of the front end and equalizing the load between both front wheels, Roll-O-Matic provides a smoother, more comfortable ride, and greatly increases front tire life.

lever. There's a practical speed for every job from a mere crawl of 1-1/2 mph to a high of 10 mph on the "50," and 11 mph on the "60" for transporting. The "creeper" gear of 1-1/2 mph is ideal for drawbar jobs requiring slow travel speed, and for maintaining maximum power shaft output when operating power-driven machines at slow speed. It is a decided advantage in transplanting . . . in operating a combine, corn picker, or ensilage harvester under certain conditions ... in spraying fruit trees ... in close cultivation of specialty crops ... and in other conditions requiring this slower speed for best work.

THERMOSTATICALLYA trouble-free water pump and a thermostatically-controlled radiator shutter are provided in the "50" and "60" Tractors to maintain most efficient engine operating temperature. The water pump provides a constant forced circulation of water. It is belt driven, has a completely sealed ball bearing, and requires no lubrication. The radiator shutter is regulated automatically through linkage with the sensitive thermostat shown below the shutter in the illustration at the right.

EASY-TO-CLEAN SCREEN
The new radiator grille not only i mproves the appearance but it also serves a useful purpose in eliminating clogging of the radiator core. Any particles of dirt or chaff small enough to pass through the fine mesh screen will normally pass on through the core. There is no longer any need to flush out the core in order to clean it properly. Any trash that may accumulate in the grille is easily removed by simply running your fingers down the flutes as shown by the inset illustration at left.
CONTROLLED SHUTTER
Before any oil can reach pistons, bearings, and other parts of the engine, it is forced through an efficient, replaceable full-flow oil filter which removes abrasives to maintain the oil in good condition.
