STRODE

The family line presented below has been based entirely on the work of James Strode ELSTON, whose
researches into the families of STRODE and STROUD extend over a period of more than forty years to the present.
He published his major work on the family in 1949, a second volume in 1970, and a third in 1974, at the age of 85.
Despite Mr. ELSTON=s extensive treatment of English STRODEs, the fact is that the parentage of
George1 STRODE of Millbrook, Hampshire, England, and Concord Township, Pennsylvania, is not proven. A
George STRODE was living in Millbrook in 1628-29 (4 Charles I). Perhaps the George STRODE who allegedly
married Margery SMITH of the Isle of Wight, and lived "near Southampton" in 1631, was the same man. Perhaps
he was the grandfather of the immigrant George1 STRODE, below. ELSTON=s work, which is carefully qualified
in many instances and has been generally well documented, is nonetheless organized in a fashion which has not
always seemed clear. He did state that George who married Margery SMITH was son of Edward STRODE (died
1608, had married Alice PORE), who was son of Edward STRODE (married Alice WHITING), who was son of
Thomas STRODE of Shepton Mallet, whose ancestry, allegedly to 1066, was given by ELSTON. So much remains
to be proven.

1. GEORGE1 STRODE, a resident of Millbrook, Hampshire, England, a village two miles west of
Southampton, incorporated into that city in 1895, was born perhaps about 1650 and died no doubt in Pennsylvania
in 1698 or later. His place of origin was mentioned in Pennsylvania deeds.
According to the record of the births of his children in Millbrook., his wife=s name was Margaret.

He was a grocer in Millbrook who on 25 July 1682 purchased 500 acres from William PENN.
Pennsylvania Archives [3:3-171] contains a record of a warrant for 250 acres given to George STRODE in August
1682, about the time he settled in Concord Township, Chester (now Delaware) County, Pa.
He was a plaintiff at the "Cort at Chester ffebr 14th 1682[/3]," but the action was withdrawn in June 1683.
He was a plaintiff, defendant and attorney (for Moses MUSGROVE, Thomas MOORE and William VESTELL, on
the records) over a ten year period to 1693.
He was of record 10 Feb. 1684/5 as witness to a deed by Nathaniel PARKE to William CLAYTON. On 27
Nov. 1686 he sold 100 acres to Thomas HALL. He witnessed a deed by John HANNUM to John WIRKHAM on 1
June 1688, and one by John SIMCOCK to Thomas BROWNE on 8 Dec. 1691.
In 1685 he was elected to a one year term as constable of Concord. The next year he was of record as
serving on a jury. In 1689 he was called to court, but, according to the record, it was "satisfied yt he is gone over
the river to West Jersey."
He was taxed in Concord in 1693 as George STROWD, and in 1696 as George STROOD. He, or possibly
his son, witnessed the will of Elizabeth HICKMAN of Thornbury on 18 April 1698.

Pa., who had wife Elizabeth.

2. GEORGE2 STRODE, born probably in Hampshire, England, perhaps about 1678, died, probably in
East Bradford, Pennsylvania, after he made his will of 9 May 1757, which was proven 16 Jan. 1758.
He married Mrs. Elizabeth (--) RING, widow of Nathaniel RING of Bradford, who died in 1714. On 3
Jan. 1714/5 she conveyed a messuage and 236 acres in Bradford to her second husband. This land, described as
parcels of 236 and 100 acres, was deeded to their son George on 12 June 1740.
In 1715 he was listed in the first assessment of Bradford with a tax of 7s.8d. (or 7/8). His name was given

as STRODE or STROUD in the lists.
George CARTER, John WILLIS and he built a mill in 1720 which was called Strode's Mill for over a
century.
He left ,20. to his son William=s two children, Richard and William, "if they live to the age of fourteen
years." To his daughter-in-law Deborah STRODE he left "my Negroe Girl Hannah while she remains a widow but
at the date of her marriage the Negroe to be sold for the benefit of her two sons, Richard and William." He signed
the will with his mark.
His eldest son, John, may have been by an unknown first wife.

3. GEORGE3 STRODE, born no doubt in East Bradford, Pennsylvania, about 1716, died there in 1778.
He married first, in Holy Trinity (Old Swedes=) Church, Wilmington, Delaware, 7 Dec. 1740, Elizabeth
CLAYTON [CLEATON on the record]. He married second, about 1768, Mrs. Mary (--) TAYLOR, who was named
in his will and was listed for taxes in 1779 and 1780.
In the Friends records at Caln, Pa., of 17 Sept. 1741 it was noted that Susannah WOODWARD, Rose
MENDENHALL and Elizabeth WAY were to speak to Elizabeth CLAYTON about her being married by "a priest."
On 21 Jan. 1741/2 [Caln records] "Elizabeth STROUD" made "acknowledgement" at Bradford Meeting, giving
witness against herself for marrying outside of Meeting. She was then allowed to return to the Society of Friends.
George STRODE was the most extensive property owner in East Bradford. In 1765 he was assessed taxes
on 450 acres, three horses, eight cattle, fifteen sheep and two servants.
He left his "youngest Malatto Wench Nell to serve my said Daughter Susannah to the Age of twenty-eight
years old," when she would be set free. To his son Jonathan he left a "Negro Woman Tenak" and "Malatto Wench
Dinah."
