GAME OVERVIEW
Whether playing the Campaign, Battle or Multi-player game, your ability to lead your squad will make the difference between success and failure.

Selecting Your Troops Press F1 to select Squad 1. Individual members of Squad 1 now appear in the SELECTED UNITS display area just above the Map display. The selection leader is always in slot one. Left-click on an individual unit in the game screen. Youll notice that the unit now occupies a slot on the SELECTED UNITS display. If youre in a hurry, you may also Ctrl-click and drag a selection window around an individual unit in the game screen. Left-clicking on a units button in the SELECTED UNITS display automatically selects the unit if he is not already selected. Pressing the F1 key twice in rapid succession centers the game screen on Squad 1. Moving the Men Once the soldiers are selected you may begin moving them around the playing surface. All you need to do is point and right-click at a spot within the game screen. If you right-click and hold the mouse button, the selected units will follow the cursor as you move the mouse, and the selection leader will be under direct control.
You may also move them by right-clicking at a location on the Strategic Map. (The Strategic Map is located in the upper portion of the Control Panel to the right of the game screen.) This lets you move them to areas of the playing surface that lie outside your current view. Remember that only selected units will obey any movement or combat instructions you give them. You can exert even greater tactical control over the soldiers by combining their movement with more complex maneuvers such as rolling, diving, kneeling, or laying prone. Pressing the corresponding shortcut key on the keyboard performs each of these maneuvers. Using these keys will also put the selection leader under direct control. A complete list of keyboard shortcuts may be found on the Controls screen.

Firing at Enemy Units It is easy to make any selected unit fire his weapon, but hitting targets is primarily up to you. With a unit selected, left-clicking anywhere on the game screen causes him to fire his selected weapon. Placing the cursor over an enemy and clicking not only makes a unit fire his weapon, but any units also selected will fire their weapons at the target as well. (Pressing the Spacebar can also be used to fire a units weapon).

Automatic weapons fire when the left mouse button is pressed. Non-automatic weapons fire on the release of the left mouse button. This lets you hold the left mouse button down while aiming and then let go when you are ready to fire. Right-click while aiming to cancel the firing of the weapon. Remember, if you click to fire a weapon or use a space bar, the selection leader will be under direct control.

Direct vs. Indirect Control When a unit is first selected, it is under indirect control and its dashboard icon is olive green. In this control mode, the unit will behave according to the Command Mode it is set on. If, after being selected, the right mouse button is held down, the keyboard is used to move or a fire button is pressed, the unit will be under direct control and its dashboard icon will turn bright green. The unit will then no longer behave according to its Command Mode and will wait for user input. If you are unsure which control mode you are in, deselect all units by clicking on an empty dashboard slot, and your first selection thereafter will put the selected unit under indirect control. Gathering Power-ups The units start most games with a rifle and some grenades. Fortunately, they are able to gather additional weapons and equipment by uncovering various power-ups. Power-ups are useful items packed in crates that are scattered about the map. They fall into three categories: Weapons, Equipment, and Air Support. Power-ups are obtained by having a unit pick them up by moving over them. Other than his rifle and grenades, a unit can only carry one other power-up in his inventory. One can, however, have a unit drop something he is carrying in favor of picking up something else.
To drop an item, first make sure the item is selected (remember, the rifle and grenade cannot be dropped). Next, press the "Drop Weapon" button (Default is "`" [tilde] but this can be user configured in the Control options).

Changing a Units Current Power-up To change a unit's current power-up, first make sure the unit is a SELECTED UNIT. Next, right-click on a weapon icon in the Control panel of the SELECTED UNIT's inventory. You may also use the Tab key to change the selection leaders weapon.
There are some power-ups like mines, explosives, and air support which can only be used by a directly controlled unit. A unit under direct control, when deselected will always default his weapon selection to the rifle. This will prevent undesired use of those weapons.

Using Power-ups To use a power-up, first make sure the power-up you desire is selected by following the steps in CHANGING A UNIT'S POWER-UP. Most power-ups and weapons can be fired simply by left-clicking on the main viewing area. Some weapons, like the Medpack and Wrench, can be fired from the control panel by first selecting the power-up, then right-clicking on the power-up icon a second time.

SQUADS AND SQUAD MEMBERS

The SQUADS Display Directly underneath the SELECTED UNITS portion of the Control Panel are the SQUADS. The SQUADS display lets you see all of your squads at a glance. The squad number is indicated in the upper left of each squad slot. The squad leaders current weapon icon is displayed in the center of the squad slot. Underneath this is the number of units and a bar representing each members health. Selecting Squads from the SQUADS Display Squads are selected by left-clicking on their respective squad slots. Individual squad members of a selected squad appear in the SELECTED UNITS slots. You may also select squads by pressing the appropriate hot key (F1 F12). Centering the Map View by Squad Left-clicking on a squad button centers the game screen on the squad leader. This lets you quickly refocus your attention on different parts of the map when the action gets hot. Moving Squads Squads are moved using the same point and click method as moving the men. First select a squad by clicking on it in the SQUADS display, then point your mouse cursor at the spot on the game screen where you want to send it. Right-click your mouse at this location. You may also move squads by right-clicking at a location on the Strategic Map or hold down the right mouse button to lead the squad around via your mouse cursor. This will put the selection leader under direct control. Having Squads Fire at Enemy Units Getting squads to fire at the enemy is just a matter of pointing and clicking. Select a squad and click. When squads are not under your direct control, they open fire according to the command mode theyve been assigned. When a squad is being fired upon, its slot on the SQUADS display changes from green to red. This information also appears on the strategic map. When you click on an enemy target, your selected squad members will also fire at the target. Squad Assignments As you become more familiar with the game, and depending upon the complexity of the mission, you may want to control multiple squads. The upper limit to the number of squads you can have in action at any one time is twelve, but for practical purposes you may want to consider limiting your squads to six (the number of available slots on your SQUADS display).

Creating New Squads To create a new squad during a game, select the soldiers you want to assign to the squad. (The selected soldiers now appear in the SELECTED UNITS slots above the SQUADS display.) Right-click on any empty Squad button. The selected soldiers are immediately assigned to the new squad. Pressing Ctrl + (F1-F12) will also create squads. When playing Battle or Multi-player games, you are given the opportunity to create multiple squads during the initial placement phase. As you place units on the map, you can assign them to different squads by changing their squad number. Reassigning Squad Members In addition to creating new squads, you can also rearrange squad members within existing squads. Instead of right-clicking on an open SQUADS display slot, right-click on the slot containing the squad you want the selected soldiers to join.

SELECTED UNITS Display The SELECTED UNITS display is located in the center of the Control Panel directly above the SQUADS display. When a squad or group of soldiers is selected, each member of the squad or group is displayed in an individual slot. A maximum of 9 selected units can be shown at any given time. However, you may scroll through all selected units if you have more than 9 selected by using the arrow buttons.

Selecting Individual Soldiers Individual members of a squad may be selected several ways: On the SQUADS display, left-click on the squad that the squad member belongs to. Find the squad member you want in the SELECTED UNITS display area and then left-click on that squad members slot. Left-click on the squad member in the game screen. Youll notice a health bar underneath the squad member after hes been selected.
The nine slots in the SELECTED UNITS display let you view individual members of a selected squad or group of soldiers. Clicking on an occupied slot lets you get up close and personal with the selected soldier. Not only do you learn the soldiers name, you also get to see his current health and an individual camera on him until you select another unit.

Vehicles Vehicles do not move on their own - you must first place someone inside them. In addition to your Green Army vehicles, empty enemy vehicles may also be entered and controlled. To move a soldier (or group of soldiers) into a vehicle,

select them, and then move your mouse over the vehicle and right-click. To get out of a vehicle, first select the vehicle, then left-click on the soldiers icon in the SELECTED UNITS display.

Vehicle Movement Vehicle Movement mouse controls are the same as those for individual soldiers. Pressing the Q and E buttons will rotate the vehicles weapon. Vehicle Health When a soldier is inside of a vehicle, the vehicles condition is shown on its health meter. As it sustains damage, the meter empties from green to yellow to red. When the meter is empty, the vehicle explodes, but remember, the wrench power-up can be used to fix a damaged vehicle. Soldiers inside an exploding Covered Truck or Halftrack will automatically exit safely. Soldiers inside vehicles other than a Covered Truck or Halftrack are eliminated if the vehicle is destroyed when they are inside. Vehicle Weapons Soldiers inside of a vehicle may not use their personal weapons, though their selected weapons may still be able to be changed. To aim and fire a vehicle weapon, click and hold the left mouse button. When ready to fire, release the mouse button. Vehicles with automatic weapons will fire when the left mouse button is held down.

COMMAND MODES
Selected units act according to the MODE you have assigned them. To issue a command mode, select the squad or group of soldiers you want to issue the command mode orders to, then left-click on the desired mode button. There are also shortcut keys corresponding to each mode. A unit under direct control does not behave according to these modes.

Attack Nearby Enemies (Keyboard shortcut: T) When Attack is selected, squad members move to a location you select, then attack and pursue any enemy units that they spot nearby. You can order soldiers to engage a specific target by left-clicking on that target. Defend Your Position (Keyboard shortcut: Y) Defend mode orders your squad members to engage enemy units they spot nearby and pursue them for a short distance. Stand and Fire (Keyboard shortcut: G) Stand mode orders your squad members to remain in place and engage enemy units that they spot nearby. Soldiers in this mode do not pursue retreating enemy units. Hold Your Position (Keyboard shortcut: H) Hold mode orders your squad members to remain in place and refrain from using their weapons, even when under attack. Health Each soldier, vehicle and military structure in the game is assigned a number of hit points (HPs) that represent its health. Hit points are a reflection of the amount of damage that something can absorb before being eliminated. A unit that runs out of hit points is eliminated. Certain power-ups, like the Med Kit, can restore lost hit points.
You can keep track of a soldier, vehicle or structures health by looking at its health meter, a horizontal bar underneath the unit that starts out colored green but changes to yellow and then to red as the unit suffers damage.

Multi-player Host Options Screen The game host can select the Options button to access the Multi-player Options screen. You may toggle an option by left-clicking in the box next to its name. You may select these individually or include entire categories by toggling the category headers. Descriptions of Power-ups and Items appear later in this manual.

Miscellaneous The Miscellaneous category has four options: Fog of War, Casualties Replaced, Power-ups Replenished and Random Power-ups. Each of these options can drastically alter the game play. Fog of War: When this option is On, you cannot scroll over and see enemy units without first clearning the fog. The default is on. Casualties Replaced: Eliminated units (soldiers and vehicles) other than Sarge automatically re-spawn after a brief delay and appear in their initial starting positions. The delay time is configurable and is specified at the bottom of the screen. Power-ups Replenished: Power-ups reappear in their same location after a brief delay. If the Random Power-ups option is turned Off, reappearing power-ups are the same as the ones they replace. The delay is configurable and is specified at the bottom of the screen. Random Power-ups: When this option is activated, power-ups are randomly chosen from the pool of active power-ups. For example, if you want to play with random power-ups, but dont want to include Air Strikes you would toggle Random Power-up option On and the Air Strike option Off. Not all power-ups on the map are randomized. Each map has some power-ups that never change, some that can be randomized and some that only appear if the random power-ups option is turned On. Casualty and Power Replacement Delay: Set the delay time (in seconds) that casualties and power-ups reappear. The default time is 300 seconds. Power-ups and Items Tabs: These tabs list all the power-ups that can appear on the map and include items that can be placed by the players. You can select these individually or include entire categories by toggling the category headers. Descriptions of Power-ups and Items appear later in this manual.

19

Deploying Your Forces Once the Host starts a multi-player game, your screen remains black until the game map has been loaded onto all the other players computers. You can monitor which other players are still loading by watching the player icons at the top of the screen. When the game map appears, its time to start deploying your troops. Unit Placement To deploy a unit, select it from the Control Panel by clicking on its icon. Move it (with your mouse) to the area of the game screen where you want to place it. If the unit changes to red, the unit is over an area where it cant be deployed (such as impassable terrain, neutral or enemy territory, or over another unit). The price of each unit (in plastic) is listed below its icon. This amount of plastic is deducted from your allotted total once you place the unit. If you decide you do not want to deploy a particular unit after you have placed it, right-click to stop placing and move your mouse back over the unit. Left-lick on the unit to remove it. Unit Facing You may change a units initial facing during deployment. Each unit has its own line of sight so, if you want a unit to defend a particular area, you will need to position your units so that they face the direction you want them to defend. This can be done using the R Arrow and L Arrow keys before you place the units. You may also left-click, facing before placing them on the map. Squad Assignments Units can be given squad assignments by left-clicking on the squad arrow buttons or by pressing the desired squads function key (F1-F12). The squad number of a soldiers squad is displayed underneath of him in the game screen. Simply select the soldier to view his squad assignment.

MULTI-PLAYER GAME SCREEN

The Multi-player and Campaign game screen are similar except for the following items.

A - Secure Message Toggle: Team members can send private messages to each other by toggling this button. B - Game Information: The Hosts name, game type and victory points needed to win are displayed here for quick reference. This can be toggled On and Off by pressing M. C - Player Info Boxes: Each player has an information box in their team color that keeps a running total of their score. D - Latency Meter: The height and color of the lower bar indicates the players latency. The color of the bar represents the connection for that player: Green (good), Yellow (fair) and Red (bad).

POWER-UPS
Power-ups come in green crates. Some you can pick up, others are instantly activated if you run over them.

WEAPON POWER-UPS
Light Machine Gun: this rifle upgrade does more damage than the standard issue. Grenades: small explosive charges thrown by hand. They inflict moderate damage on any enemy units caught within their blast radius. Land Mines: explosive charges that are placed underground. Once placed, Land Mines have no friends. Theyll detonate when any unsuspecting soldier or vehicle gets too close. To place a mine, left-click if youre using the mouse or press the Spacebar if youre using the keyboard. Just remember: a mine is a terrible thing to waste. Place them only where you think the enemy is likely to go.* Mortar: a long range, indirect fire weapon. It lobs high explosive shells over intervening obstacles giving enemy units no place to hide. When easy mortar fire is turned off, holding down the left mouse button will bring up a moving targeter cursor. Letting go of the mouse button will fire the mortar towards the cursor. Sniper Rifle: a very accurate, direct fire weapon with an excellent range. Its perfect for those times when you want to reach out and touch someone.

Vulcan Machine Gun: has an extremely high rate of fire and does increased damage to enemy units. It comes with unlimited ammo. This is an upgrade to the standard rifle. Bazooka: a medium range weapon that inflicts heavy damage on enemy units caught within its limited blast radius. The Bazooka is best used against tanks, slow moving vehicles and pillboxes. Explosives: very powerful charges primarily used to destroy stationary objects. To place an explosive, move your unit to the desired spot and left-click (or press spacebar). A box and countdown timer appears where the explosives are activated. Be sure to move friendly troops out of the area immediately.* Flamethrower: an effective short range weapon to use against personnel and vehicles. Flames from this weapon can melt plastic and set flammable material on fire in seconds.

* Units not under direct control will never use these power-ups.

EQUIPMENT POWER-UPS: The following are not weapons but they can be used to enhance your fighting ability.
Adrenaline Boost: used to double a units movement rate. This power-up immediately increases the units speed but only lasts for a short time, blinking as it wears off. Disguise: used to fool the enemy. They change the color of your soldiers to the color indicated by the disguise and changes the units Command Mode to Hold. To use this item, select the disguise icon and then left-click on the soldiers. The enemy is not fooled if you put on the disguise within their visual range. Any offensive action immediately causes your soldiers to revert to his true color. (The color of your soldiers is also changed on the strategic map when a disguise is activated.)* Flak Jacket: personal body armor. It absorbs up to 60% of the damage inflicted by enemy fire. The flak jacket does not take up a slot in inventory and thus may be worn freely. Instant Health: when run over by any player-owned unit, immediately restores health of all player-owned units. A yellow cross distinguishes this Power-up from Med Packs.
* Units not under direct control will never use these power-ups.

Med Pack: unlike the Instant Health, does not have to be used immediately and can be carried like any other piece of equipment. It restores the health of unites within a limited range. To use a Med Pack, right-click twice on its icon in the INVENTORY display. Med Packs cannot heal vehicles. Minesweeper: used to clear enemy mines from the path of your soldiers. It lets you walk over mines without causing them to explode. You can remove a mine with the minesweeper by left-clicking on the mine once its exposed or by pressing the Spacebar on the keyboard. Wrench: used to repair all your damaged vehicles. To use simply right-click the wrench icon twice.

AIR SUPPORT POWER-UPS: With these power-ups, your troops can radio for aerial support. Be careful though. Enemy anti-aircraft guns will foil any attempts to call in Air Support. Units not under direct control will never use these power-ups.
Air Attack: power-up that causes helicopters to swoop in and launch a devastating volley of missiles. To call in an Air Attack, first left-click on the icon in the INVENTORY, then scroll around the map until you see your target. Then left-click if youre using the mouse or press the Spacebar if youre using the keyboard. (If an Air Attack is called in on hidden terrain, it will be revealed to you.) Air Strike: power-up that causes a bomber to fly in and drop a deadly payload of bombs. Deployment operates the same as Air Attack. Air Reconnaissance: may be performed over any location on the map. In the location designated, the fog effects will temporarily be disabled. To use this follow the same steps as Air Attack. The reconnaissance only lasts for a short time however, so remember what youve seen. Napalm Air Strike: delivers a swath of fiery destruction that can engulf whole sections of the map. To launch the attack, follow the same steps as Air Attack. Paratroopers: power-up that lets you air drop soldiers (two riflemen and a third randomly equipped soldier on the map. To drop the paratroopers, follow the same steps as Air Attack.
