Photo I
Photo I is a UC approved art class intended for students interested in learning basic and
advanced photographic techniques. The class will cover many areas including camera exposure,
film development, darkroom processes, photographic interpretation, and photographic history.

Assignments: Photo assignments are designed to challenge students creatively and

mentally. Communication of thought and feeling are expected in each print that you create. It is
expected that your assignments will be photographed outside of class on your own time.
Portfolio: You will be required to have a 3-ring binder for this class. The binder will act as a
portfolio of work. It will be collected at the end of each assignment. The most important part is that
you keep your portfolio clean and organized.

Photo Paper/Film/Cameras: You are responsible for film and photo paper. Photo
paper can be ordered through several vendors and online . Lockers are provided., but put your
name on everything, I am not responsible for paper left in the darkroom. This class is an all black
and white class. I am the only place in Sonoma that sells black and white film. It can be purchased
through me. IOU’s are accepted. We use traditional 35 mm film SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras
in class. I have a limited amount of loaner cameras. Check with friends, relatives, neighbors, ebay
for cameras to use.

Grades: 90-100% A; 80-89% B; 70-79% C; 60-69% D. Grades are cumulative and based heavily on
photo assignments. Do not expect to pass if you miss turning in photographs. Late Work: is accepted with
time constraints and point penalty. Talk to me right away if you have problems with your assignments.

Safety/ Class Rules: •We work with chemistry in class that can be potentially
harmful if not used properly, no horseplay will be accepted in class. • Do not put your hands in
the chemistry, and protect your clothes if you can, the chemistry can stain. • Bottles with lids are
OK, but NO FOOD will be allowed. •CLEAN UP after yourself. • BE RESPECTFUL to each other
and keep the language clean. • ASK BEFORE YOU USE SOMETHING. • HAVE FUN, take risks
with your work, create something you will be PROUD of.

Lab and Material Fee: We go through a lot of consumables in class. There is a one time $35
lab fee that covers additional chemistry, negative covers, matte board, plastic sleeves, etc.

..To be a photographer, one must photograph. No amount of book learning, no checklist of seminars attended, can substitute for the simple act of making pictures.
Experience is the best teacher of all. And for that, there are no guarantees that one will become an artist. Only the journey matters... Harry Callahan
