REFLECTION

The play that was presented last Friday displayed a pool of grievous sins that politics along with greed and temptation- have cursed the people. We cannot say that all practices of how we elect our politicians are morally or legally wrong, but there is the dispute that still has not been settled. There are several attempts and opportunities where politicians have compromised the good from the bad and from where we stand, choosing the right decisions are not always the case. Certain issues that Ive grasped and reflected about were as follows: (1) Political Dynasty In principle, there is nothing wrong with political dynasties. And as present, the politics in the Philippines has been under control of a few prominent families with the help of their considerable influence in our country. However, the mistake takes place when certain families can no longer let go of their position and would do anything to take hold on it, even if it means fighting for it while burning your family. Greed takes place and the desire to be elected is no longer for the nations sake but rather for their own prestige. (2) Epal / Grandstanding This issue is subtle but at the same time loud. Not everyone notices but it exists. Being Epal is where public officials claim credits for publicly funded projects by placing their name or image for their own prestige that serves as an assistance to further their careers. (3) Vote buying / Suhol Aonther one of the classics that never gets old. Politicians spend whatever money it takes to win. Intimidation and misinformation can also fall into this category. (4) Corruption One of the most inevitable temptations that politics has to offer. It is the misuse of government funds for their personal gain. Again, the taxes that people pay should be for the public good and not for the private greed. Im a hundred percent certain that it exists and will exist until for how long, I dont know. (5) Celebrities and Church officials running in politics Lets be honest, there is nothing really wrong if celebrities or priests run. The wrongness however starts when a motive is present that involves interventions to a certain issue that would benefit their own cause. In terms of Church officials running, it is very transparent that their purpose is to inculcate the teachings of the Church influentially with the help of a government position. There is nothing wrong with it however I am bound to think that the Church will only listen to themselves and not be open-minded with things that the nation really needs. I am not prejudice against the Church but honestly speaking, they are more concerned with their religious beliefs rather than whats really happening and more so, the moral things that matters more. Besides, thats why there is a separation between the Church and the State. No meddling with each other. The Church has their own concerns while the State has the whole nation to think about. As we grow, we get the clearer perspective of what is right and what is wrong. To grow older means to know more. But apparently, growing older does not mean were getting wiser. As people get old today, the more they tend to make mistakes. And as time passes by, they no longer commit mistakes by chance, it is now by choice. We cannot speak about the politicians as a whole that they are all corrupt as in that case, it will be unjust to those who are good. However, we are no longer confident if there is really a good politician nowadays. There may be better politicians but being better does not necessarily mean good. They may commit lesser wrongdoings but that does not make our world better.
