TheStar of Hope
By Marcel Malgo
It was by God's grace that the wise men
discovered the star of the newborn King. They
sawtheir responsibility, arose and followed the
star, with a high and exalted purpose. The
purpose of their long journey was to give glory to
Jesus, to worship and adore Him. This is also the
purpose of our lifes journey as born-again
Christians.

First Thessalonians 1 and
the Rapture
By Dr. Ron J. Bigalke Jr.
TheThessalonians were experiencing tribulation just as the
Lord Jesus had promised all His disciples would encounter in
any age. Although they faced persecution and hardship, the wrath to comewould not affect
them. Knowing this, we should be encouraged to live as if the Lord may return in our own
lifetime and rescue usfromthe wrath to comeby means of the rapture.

By Wilfred Hahn
Aleading economist has described the current multilateral
approach to globalismas ineffective at solving the world's
problems. He speaks of the world moving to a post-
globalismstate called minilateralism, which actually fits hand
in glove with Bible prophecy. We will discuss the meaning of
this newapproach, and the evidence that points toward this
conclusion.

t is during the month of December
when traditionally the birth of Je-
sus Christ is celebrated. The words
Merry Christmas are heard in virtu-
ally all the languages of the world, and
possibly no country is exempt. Mid-
night Call wishes all its friends and readers
a blessed Merry Christmas.
Presently, we use the Editors Note col-
umn as a continuous Bible study, and for
the last few years in particular, the twelve
Minor Prophets. We realize that the
prophets spoke and wrote under the inspi-
ration of the Holy Spirit. Their message can
be summarized with just a few words:
Come, I have prepared a way you may re-
turn unto me, because I am coming to
you.
The third chapter gives us the fourth
prophetic night vision that Zechariah had.
He describes what he sees, and though this
may be confusing, when we look at it from
spiritual perspectives, we can understand
this message more clearly.
Here is what he sees: And he shewed
me Joshua the high priest standing before
the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing
at his right hand to resist him. And the
LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke
thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath
chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a
brand plucked out of the fire? (verses 1-
2). According to the margin of the Tanakh
Bible, Joshua the high priest was one who
returned from Babylonian captivity.
Joshuas father was introduced to us in
Haggai 1:1. His name means Jehovah re-
members, Jehovah saves, or, as Abra-
ham Meister states, Jehovah is generous
and liberal.
There is something striking in the sen-
tence, and Satan standing at his right
hand. The right hand signifies strength
and defense. We remember from the New
Testament that the Lord Jesus Christ set
Himself at the right hand of God, according
to 1 Peter 3:22. In this case, the opposor,
the evil oneSatanstands at the right

OUR TASK
Midnight Call Ministries is a nonprofit missionary organization,
dedicated to proclaiming the entire Bible as the unfailing and
eternal written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the
unerring guide for the Christian faith.
The object of Midnight Call is to call people everywhere to
Christ, to proclaim the Second Coming of Christ, to prepare
Christians for His coming, and to uphold the faith and warn of
false doctrines. Midnight Call magazine is available in twelve
languages. All work done through radio, literature and
missionaries is supported entirely by the gifts and free will
offerings of Gods people.
STATEMENT OF FAITH
WE BELIEVE in the divine inspiration of the whole Bible and
therewith the infallibility of the Holy Scripture, which is Gods
Word, and in the eternal Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
WE BELIEVE Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was conceived of the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, and shed
His blood to save mankind. He died and arose bodily the third
day and later ascended into heaven.
WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ died in the place of
each individual sinner and that all who believe in Him as their
personal Savior are justified through His shed blood and have
become children of God.
WE BELIEVE that Israel is Gods chosen people, and that the
restoration of the Jews to their own land is the fulfillment of
the Word of God.
WE BELIEVE in the pretribulational appearance of Jesus Christ
for the Rapture of His Church (all born again believers).
WE BELIEVE in the immortality of our souls and the resurrection
of our bodies, and in the resurrection of the just and the unjust, the
everlasting blessedness of the saved and the everlasting punishment
of the lost.

hand of Joshua the High Priest, for one purpose: to resist him. Satan
simply is saying, He is mine. We must recall here that the Bible says, He
who sins is of the devil. Sin is clearly revealed in verse 3: Now Joshua
was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
Someone recently asked if the devil can be both on earth and in heaven.
Here we have the answer: he is in heaven, but he can also be on the earth,
as evident from the book of Job: Now there was a day when the sons of
God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also
among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth,
and from walking up and down in it (Job 1:6-7). How long will he have
access to the throne of God? Answer: Until the saints are perfected; that is,
after the Rapture. This is documented for us in Revelation 12:9-10, where
we read: And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the
Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into
the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice
saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom
of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is
cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. Satan is
the legal representative of sin and rebellion, and since all have sinned and
come short of the glory of God, he is the representative of all sinners. He is
not the defender but the accuser.
Is this vision representative of Joshua the High Priest as a person, or
does he represent the Old Testament priestly service, therewith Israel?
I think it is evident that Joshua represents Israel under the Law. Israel col-
lectively failed numerous times when it came to keeping the laws and
commandments of God. Israelin this case, Joshua the High Priestwas
polluted by sin. Besides, it was impossible for the Old Testament priestly
service, demonstrated through the sacrifice of animals, to take away sin; it
was only covered. We read, For it is not possible that the blood of bulls
and of goats should take away sins (Hebrews 10:4).
So why does Joshua stand before the Lord? There is only one answer:
he is seeking grace. There is no way for him to stand before the holy coun-
tenance of God without being purified. Satan, therefore, legitimately
stands at his right hand demanding that Joshua (Israel) be his.
Such is also the case for the believer under the New Covenant. We need
someone who stands at the right hand of God, not to accuse us, but to de-
fend us. We may ask, on what basis is defense possible if the accused party
is guilty? Again, there is only one answer, and that is one wordgrace!
Realizing this fact, it made my heart sing, Grace, grace, Gods grace, grace
that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, Gods grace, grace that
is greater than all our sin.
In spite of his legal rights, Satan is rebuked. Why? Because the Lord
has chosen Jerusalem. That is the city where the greatest act of unright-
eousness in all of human history transpired. There Satan, through the
hands of sinful man, nailed the sinless One, Jesus Christ, to the cross
where He poured out His life in His blood and died to make grace possi-
ble. Satan made his fatal mistake; he caused the death of an innocent per-
son.
Now we should better understand why the whole world is involved in
the conflict of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is infinitely more than this relatively
small city in the mountains of Judea, in the land of Israel seems to repre-
sent. Jerusalem is the dwelling place; we may call it the residence of Gods
name.
In relationship to the name of God, one should carefully read 1 Kings
chapter 8, where the word name appears 13 times. In verse 60, Solomon
prays for his nation but includes the Gentile world: That all the people of
the earth may know that the LORD is God, and that there is none else.
How does God answer? And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy
prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hal-
lowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever;
and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually (1 Kings 9:3).
The leaders of this world and the overwhelming majority of the popula-
tion has not the slightest idea about the significance of the city of
Jerusalem.
It is also the geographical point where God touched planet Earth to ac-
complish redemption for mankind. It is the city of Jerusalem where Jesus
will return, establishing peace for Israel, and from there to the rest of the
world.
In relation to Satans claim to Joshua, God created a new law that super-
sedes the old one. That new law is based on the payment for the sins of
mankind, and the substance is the blood of Christ.
Next comes the demonstration of the act of grace: And he answered
and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy
garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine in-
iquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. And
I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon
his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood
by (Zechariah 3:4-5). The high priest and his service were incapable of
bringing about the change from sin to righteousness, from pollution to
cleanliness, from the devils territory to Gods heaven. Note that the Lord is
the cause of this change. He ordered the new raiment and a fair mitre
upon his head. This is an act of grace pointing toward the coming grace,
which would be accomplished by the Son of God, Jesus the Christ.
Now an order is given: And the angel of the LORD protested unto
Joshua(verse 6). The Tenakh reads: And the angel of the Lord charged
Joshua as follows. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my
ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my
house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk
among these that stand by (verse 7). The order goes out to walk in the
Lords ways, to keep His charge, to judge His house, and to keep His courts.
What would be the result? To walk among these that stand by. Who are
they? Heavenly beings. The Menge translation reads, And I will give you
free access to these who stand before me as servants.

DECEMBER 2009 7
How is God going to accomplish this? How is He to permit a sinful
person to come into the presence of God? It will take a miracle. Hear
now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee:
for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant
the BRANCH (verse 8). David in his Psalm describes the action of this
servant: For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him
from those that condemn his soul (Psalm 109:31). In short, the birth of
Jesus in Bethlehem was a miracle. The prophets spoke about it, and we
read of the fulfillment in the first book of the New Testament, in the
Gospel of Matthew. The Branch is the servant of the Lord. He is no one
else but Jesus Christ, the Son of God (see Isaiah 4:2, 11:1; Jeremiah
23:5).
Then a further prophecy about the coming One is revealed in verse 9:
For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone
shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the
LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
Here is another symbolic demonstration of the Messiah of Israel and the
Savior of the world. He is the Stone of which Daniel wrote: And in the
days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which
shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other peo-
ple, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it
shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out
of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the
brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain,
and the interpretation thereof sure (Daniel 2:44-45).
The seven eyes are the declared intention of God to save, and these
intentions are focused upon the one single stone.
It is the same stone of which Zechariah writes later in chapter 12:3:
And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all peo-
ple: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all
the people of the earth be gathered together against it. It is the stone
that the builders rejected, which has become the Chief Cornerstone.
Thus we see Jerusalem being identified with the Messiah, the rejected
stone, the one whom the seven eyes of God watched over.
What is the purpose of all of this? I will remove the iniquity of that
land in one day. Reading such a sentence moves our hearts because it
shows that it will be Gods infinite love and grace that will cause the re-
pentance and subsequent forgiveness of the sins of the people of Israel.
It is based exclusively on His compassion, I will remove the iniquity.
This is such a great comfort in our days, especially now as we see the
nations of the world in their fervent, even fanatical opposition against
Jerusalem. The world says, Under no circumstances must Jerusalem be
the undivided capital city of the Jewish state of Israel. When we hear
the media and what the various leaders of this world say about
Jerusalem, then we have to admit there is no hope for the Jews. There is
no future for a Jewish Israeli Jerusalem. The nations of the world will not

permit Jerusalem to be the place God has destined it to be. But this verse
tells us the opposite, because it is based on the I will of God.
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neigh-
bour under the vine and under the fig tree (verse 10). When that occurs,
man, for the first time in history, will live at peace with his neighbor. They
will enjoy the fruit of the land; they will invite each other to share in their
blessings. That is real peace, such as never can be accomplished by
weapons of wars, negotiations or peace treaties. As a matter of fact,
weapons of war will be abolished when Jesus comes.
That, incidentally, is the only peace worth fighting for. That fight is not
with weapons of war, but with the power of an irresistible prayer life in the
saints. It is the battle in the invisible world that is raging right now. That
battle totally ignores all the political circumstances, agreements and dis-
agreements. Its the battle the Apostle Paul speaks of: For we wrestle not
against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against
the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in
high places (Ephesians 6:12).
All Israel Prophetic Bible Study Tour
We depart the USA on the 10th of May and return on the 21st. This
special tour will be hosted by myself. We will travel the land of Israel
from Dan to Beersheba. There will be numerous places where you will
see and walk the ground where great biblical events have taken place.
During this tour, we will unveil some of the mysteries of Israel and point
out why the world is so much at odds with this small Jewish nation. We
will learn, Bible in hand, more details about the marvelous land and its
people as they are in the process of building a prosperous nation in the
midst of the Arab Muslim world. There are many other reasons why you
should join this once in a lifetime tour to the Holy Land, but let me con-
clude with the words of Moses just before he died: Happy art thou, O Is-
rael: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy
help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be
found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places
(Deuteronomy 33:29).
This 12-day tour carries the price of $2,955 (see pages 2932 for fur-
ther information and the reservation coupon).

A few wise men from the East were given the chance to see the star of the
newborn King, the Star of Hope. Let us consider this story more closely
and divide it into five points: grace, responsibility, confession of faith, joy
and devotion.
10 M I D N I G H T C A L L
The wise men from the east are often
called Magi. This can also be translated
as astrologers. These wise men were
granted the opportunity to see a star, the
star of the newborn King, the Star of
Hope. How did this happen?
Now when Jesus was born in Bethle-
hem of Judaea in the days of Herod the
king, behold, there came wise men from
the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is
he that is born King of the Jews? For we
have seen his star in the east, and are
come to worship him. Where
Herod the king had heard
these things, he was troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.
And when he had gathered all
the chief priests and scribes of
the people together, he de-
manded of them where Christ
should be born. And they said
unto him, In Bethlehem of Ju-
daea: for thus it is written by
the prophet, And thou Bethle-
hem, in the land of Juda, art
not the least among the
princes of Juda: for out of thee
shall come a Governor, that
shall rule my people Israel.
Then Herod, when he had
privily called the wise men,
enquired of them diligently
what time the star appeared.
And he sent them to Bethle-
hem, and said, Go and search
diligently for the young child;
and when ye have found him,
bring me word again, that
I may come and worship him
also. When they had heard the
king, they departed; and, lo,
the star, which they saw in the
east, went before them, till it came and
stood over where the young child was.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced
with exceeding great joy. And when they
were come into the house, they saw the
young child with Mary his mother, and
fell down, and worshipped him: and
when they had opened their treasures,
they presented unto him gifts; gold, and
frankincense and myrrh. And being
warned of God in a dream that they
should not return to Herod, they de-

parted into their own country another
way (Matthew 2:1-12).
Grace
Was it their wisdom, their astrologi-
cal knowledge or even magic (magic:
derived from magi) that enabled them to
discover the star of the newborn King?
Certainly some of their capabilities were
a help to them, but above all the wise
men experienced great grace from
heaven. It was the sovereign and gra-
cious will of the Father in heaven that
enabled them to discover the star of the
newborn King. It is irrelevant, therefore,
whether they were wise men, as-
trologers or magicians. Through the
grace of God, here a few people were
confronted with the greatest hope that
ever was on this earth: the arrival of the
Savior in the world.
My dear reader, have you discovered
the Star of Hope, the bright and morn-
ing Star (Revelation 22:16) yet? Those
who have experienced this can testify to
the extraordinary grace and love of the
Father. It was not because they sought it
that they were able to discover this star,
but because the Father in heaven sought
them! No man can come to me, except
the Father which hath sent me draw
him (John 6:44, cf. verse 65 of the
same chapter.) It is grace. For by grace
are ye saved through faith; and that not
of yourselves: it is the gift of God (Eph-
esians 2:8). It is the Father in heaven
who brings us into contact with the
bright and morning Star. It is His infi-
nitely great Christmas gift to us hu-
mans, Herein is love, not that we loved
God, but that he loved us, and sent his
Son to be the propitiation for our
sinsWe love him, because he first
loved us (1 John 4:10 & 19).
The fact that we celebrate Christmas,
remembering that Jesus Christ came to
this earth for us, and that we can believe
in Him is thanks to the grace of the Fa-
ther alone. God wants all people to
know this grace (1 Timothy 2:4 and Ti-
tus 2:11). Think of the following Old
Testament statement, Have I any plea-
sure at all that the wicked should die?
saith the Lord God: and not that he
should return from his ways, and live?
(Ezekiel 18:23).
It is not that we sought Him and re-
ceived Him into our lives, but He took
us out of this evil world and made us
citizens of heaven. This is the tremen-
dous miracle of the grace of God. This is
Christmas! And this is what the wise
men experienced at that time when they
discovered the Star of Hope. It was not
due to their knowledge and ability, but it
was the will of the Father in heaven.
Responsibility
The fact that the wise men were en-
abled to discover the star is one thing. It
is quite something else that they arose
and followed this star to worship the
King. By following the Star of Hope,
they had fellowship with the newborn
King. In John 3:16 it says, For God so
loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have ever-
lasting life. Here we are confronted
with the responsibility of those who are
offered the gift from heaven, that
whosoever believeth in him. Every-
one can discover this Star of Hope, Jesus
Christ. The responsibility lies with us,

however, to follow it; that is, to believe in
Him.
Had the wise men merely acknowl-
edged it but not followed it when they
discovered the star, the discovery would
not have profited them. But they arose,
believed in what was given to them from
heaven, and in this way they had a won-
derful meeting with the Savior.
Perhaps you have already discovered
the Star of Hope, but nothing has
changed in your life. Why? You did not
begin a journey like the wise men to wor-
ship the King. You have not yet acknowl-
edged the gift of grace from the heavenly
Father for yourself personally.
Do you not want to have living fellow-
ship with Jesus Christ, as so many before
you have had? Do not merely observe the
Star of Hope, but make a personal deci-
sion. Say yes to Jesus Christ and let it
truly become Christmas in your life for
the first time. Look the truth in the eye.
You need a redeemer on account of your
sins. You may have lived a perfectly de-
cent life, but you cannot stand before
God. You do not need to commit any
grave sins in order to perish, but just to
remain as you are.
The Bible says,
There is none
righteous, no, not
oneThey are all
gone out of the way,
they are together
become unprof-
itable; there is none
that doeth good, no,
not one (Romans
3:10 & 12). If you
have not already
done it, therefore,
then claim His sacrificial death on Cal-
varys cross for yourself personally. If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
For, as many as received him, to them
gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his
name (John 1:12).
Do it today; do not remain an observer
of the Star of Hope any longer. Receive
the gift of the heavenly Father and let it
truly become Christmas in your life. It is
your responsibility to take this step.
Confession of Faith
We read in 2 Chronicles 17:7 & 9 of
the Old Testament king Jehoshaphat,
through whom a great revival took place,
In the third year of his reign he sent to
his princesand they taught in Judah,
and had the book of the law of the Lord
with them, and went about throughout
all the cities of Judah, and taught the
people. What was the result of this bold
testimony of the princes of Jehoshaphat
to the Lord? And the fear of the Lord
fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands
Perhaps you have already discovered the Star of Hope, but nothing has changed in

You have not yet acknowledged the gift of grace from the heavenly Father for your-
self personally.

that were round about Judah, so that
they made no war against Jehoshaphat
(verse 10).
Exactly the same thing happened
when the wise men, in their search for
the newborn King, went to Jerusalem
and without any ado began to speak
about the newborn King. This made
King Herod panic (Matthew 2:2-4). He
feared for his throne and did not want to
surrender it to any newborn king, not
under any circumstances. But apart from
this, it was something very special that
at the mention of a newborn King a
whole city with its ruler was in a state of
panic.
I want to say to us all very earnestly:
if we discover the Star of Hope and
come to believe on the Lord Jesus, we
should also take our stand. In 1 Peter
3:15, Peter wrote, Be ready always to
give an answer to every man that asketh
you a reason of the hope that is in you.
Do we understand what this is about? It
is about confessing that we have discov-
ered the Star of Hope and now believe in
Him.
There are perhaps moments in our
lives when we know, now I must stand
by my Savior. When such moments
come, we should confess our faith in Je-
sus and not be silent. When we have
confessed our faith in Him, the Lord will
stand by us and keep us.
What happened to the wise men?
They did not become a part of Herods
murderous plan. God told them in a
dream not to return to Herod, to whom
they had beforehand proclaimed the
birth of the King freely.
When we confess our King, He will
confess our names before His Father and
before all the angels in heaven, Whoso-
ever therefore shall confess me before

Many people have experienced this. To follow the Star of Hope, to believe with all
our hearts on Jesus Christ, gives us an unimagined deep and spiritual joy. And the

men, him will I confess also before my
Father which is in heaven (Matthew
10:32, cf. Luke 12:8).
Joy
After the wise men had left Jerusalem
and its cunning and wicked king, they
reached the place where the young
child was, and, When they saw the
star, they rejoiced with exceeding great
joy (Matthew 2:9-10).
Many people have experienced this.
To follow the Star of Hope, to believe
with all our hearts on Jesus Christ, gives
us an unimagined deep and spiritual joy.
And the more we cling to our Lord in
true devotion, the more we will experi-
ence this joy.
Paul was a man who had followed the
Star of Hope with great devotion all his
life. For this reason he was able to say in
captivity, in trials and temptations, Re-
joice in the Lord always: and again I say,
Rejoice (Philippians 4:4). He was a man
who did not depart inwardly from his
Lords side, and therefore could speak
about this deep spiritual joy continually.
Apart from eternal life
that the King gives to all
those who follow Him,
He also gives us hours of
joy in the fellowship with
Himself in this life. You
do not want to miss that,
do you? Come to the
King today and follow
Him!
Devotion
Out of grace the wise
men discovered the star.
They saw their responsibility, arose and
followed the star, with a high and ex-
alted purpose. When they arrived in
Jerusalem, they said, Where is he that is
born King of the Jews? For we have seen
his star in the east, and are come to wor-
ship him (Matthew 2:2).
The purpose of their long journey was
to give glory to the newborn King, to
worship and adore Him, as they then
did. They fell down, and worshipped
him: and when they had opened their
treasures, they presented unto him gifts;
gold, and frankincense, and myrrh
(verse 11).
This is also the purpose of our lifes
journey as born-again Christians. We
have not only been given the chance to
discover the Star of Hope and to believe
in Him so that we have redemption and
eternal life, but we were also allowed to
come into contact with the Star of Hope
so that we might live our lives in com-
plete devotion to our King. This devo-
tion, which must become ever deeper,
more fervent and pure, is the high pur-
pose of our lives as born-again Chris-

tians. But what is this devo-

incense and myrrh.
In our devotion also, which needs to
be continually renewed, symbolically
these three elements must of a necessity
be present in our lives.
Gold
Gold is the purest metal. It was used in
great quantities for the tabernacle and its
vessels, as well as for the high priests gar-
ments. In Solomons temple also much gold
was used (cf. 2 Chronicles 3:4-10). The fact
that so much gold was used says nothing
other than that for Him, our great King,
only the best is good enough. For us this
means in practical terms that we
Give to Him our whole love (our first
love), our absolute obedience, our com-
plete trust, the best of our time, our great
zeal, our selfless service and all our dili-
gence.
At the time of King Rehoboam, Shishak,
the King of Egypt, stole all the golden
shields that Solomon had made from the
temple (1 Kings 14:26). Afterwards Re-
hoboam had brass shields made (1 Kings
14:27). But brass is not gold.
In the lives of many Christians, their
devotion to the King is restricted
through sin. Instead of gold it is only
brass. Let us take care that our King is
not robbed of the gold through sin in our
lives. He is not satisfied with brass. For Him
only the bestgoldis good enough.
Frankincense
The second gift of the wise men was
frankincense. Frankincense is an aro-
matic resin obtained from an African tree
and burned as incense.
Frankincense played an important
part in Old Testament worship, because
it was a part of the holy incense. They
had to burn the memorial of it upon the
altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a
sweet savour unto the Lord (Leviticus
2:2). Frankincense had a substance in it
that was a sweet savor for the Lord. In
order that this sweet savor could arise,
the frankincense, the resin, had to be
burned.
Frankincense means for us in practi-
cal terms: Lord, I surrender myself to
You completely, without any restrictions.
I lay myself upon the altar and want to
say, Do what You want with me.
Frankincense also means to cease all
complaining and rebelling. It means say-
ing yes with all your heart to the way
the Lord has chosen for you.
Frankincense is that which Paul de-
scribed in Galatians 2:20, I live; yet not
I, but Christ liveth in me.

restricted through sin. Instead of gold it is only
brass. Let us take care that our King is not robbed

fied with brass. For Him only the bestgoldis

16 M I D N I G H T C A L L
Are we prepared to
live in such devotion to our
Lord? The more we say yes to
such devotion, the less will be visible of our-
selves, for then the frankincense is burned.
It is a process of transformation which
John the Baptist describes as follows,
He must increase, but I must decrease
(John 3:30).
Myrrh
Then there was the myrrh that the wise
men brought the King. Myrrh is also a fra-
grant resin obtained from certain trees and
used, especially in the Near East, in per-
fumery, medicines, and incense. It was
part of the holy anointing oil, Moreover
the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take
thou also unto thee principal spices, of
pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of
sweet cinnamon half so much, even two
hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet
calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
and of cassia five hundred shekels, after
the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil
an hin: and thou shalt make it an oil of
holy ointment, an ointment compound af-
ter the art of the apothecary: it shall be an
holy anointing oil (Exodus 30:22-25).
When we think of fragrant anointing
oil, we are perhaps reminded of the pound
of ointment of spikenard with which Mary
anointed the feet of Jesus in Bethany.
What was the result of Mary performing
this act? Then took Mary a pound of
ointment of spikenard, very costly, and
anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his
feet with her hair: and the house was filled
with the odour of the ointment (John
12:3).
The moment Mary poured out that
ointment on Jesus feet, a fragrant odor
filled the house. Through Marys deed of
love, then, a savor of Christ went forth
and filled the whole house. In this way,
what Paul later wrote to the Corinthians
was literally fulfilled, For we are unto
God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that
are saved, and in them that perish (2
Corinthians 2:15).
Devotion is when the sweet savor of
Christ fills our surroundings through our
lives. Our fellow men and women should
see that Christ dwells in us, Forasmuch
as ye are manifestly declared to be the
epistle of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:3).
Bring the King myrrh! Live, act, speak
and think in such a way that the sweet
savour of Christ goes forth from you.
To Sum Up
I want to sum up the five points: grace,
responsibility, confession of faith, joy and
devotion.
- Grace: It is thanks to the grace of the
Father alone when a person comes into
contact with the Star of Hope, the Re-
deemer, Jesus Christ.
- Responsibility: After a person has
come into contact with the Star of Hope,
his Savior, it is his responsibility to follow
this star. He must consciously say yes to
Jesus Christ.
- Confession of faith: When we dis-
cover the Star of Hope and come to living
faith in the Lord Jesus, we should take our
stand and confess our Lord.
- Joy: To follow the Star of Hope gives
us an unimagined deep and spiritual joy.
- Devotion: For this very reason we
should be fervently devoted to our Lord.
Bring Him continually gold, frankin-
cense and myrrh. In this sense, I wish you a
happy and blessed Christmas. MR1208/358

THE STAR OF HOPE
T
he Pauline epistles may be classified accord-
ing to chronology and content. In this series
of articles addressing the Thessalonian Epis-
tles and the rapture, a modified chronological-con-
tent classification will be applied to these writings,
which means 12 Thessalonians are understood to
be eschatological epistles. Eschatology (the doctrine
of last things), of course, is not the only content or
instruction within the Epistles; rather, the classifi-
cation of eschatological with regard to the Epis-
tles indicates the primary emphasis.
First and Second Thessalonians were written in
response to Timothys report of affliction of the
church in Thessalonica (1 Thess 3:1-10). Paul was
concerned that the church would be disturbed by
these afflictions (3:3). He sent Timothy to visit the
believers to strengthen and encourage them, and
to provide a report with regard to the nature of their

faith (3:2, 5). Timothy provided Paul good
news of the churchs perseverance; conse-
quently, Paul wrote his letter with thanksgiving
(3:6, 9).
The majority of the difficulties that the Thes-
salonians experienced were the consequence of
jealous Jews inciting a wicked mob, crowd, and
city officials (Acts 17:5, 8). Since the Thessalon-
ian church was both Jewish and Gentile, some
other difficulties that necessitated Pauls instruc-
tion arose due to those backgrounds. Pauls in-
struction addressed sexual morality (1 Thess
4:3-8), social conduct (4:9-10), manual labor
(4:11-12), grief concerning the dead in Christ
(4:13-18), false teachings with regard to the day
of the Lord (5:1-11; 2 Thess 1:32:12), and
avoiding idleness (2 Thess 3:10-12). Confusion
regrding these matters caused Pauls teaching to
include instruction explaining the nature of new
life in the Lord Jesus Christ, and the correspond-
ing responsibilities of the Christian.
The Thessalonian Epistles instruct believers to
affirm the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and therefore
submit intelligently to the will of God. Therefore,
the issues that Paul addressed were practical as
opposed to being merely theoretical. The Thessa-
lonian Epistles provide practical instruction for
life in the present, and yet anticipate the coming
day when the Lord Jesus Christ returns in power
and glory.
THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDOF THE EPISTLES TO
THE THESSALONIANS
The Apostle Paul wrote the Epistles of 12
Thessalonians from Corinth on his second mission-
ary journey, approximately AD 51 (cf. 1 Thess 1:7-
9; 2:17; 3:1, 6; Acts 18:5, 11). The mission to
Thessalonica is reported in Acts 17:1-9. As a self-
governing community, Thessalonica enjoyed the
status of a free city. Since the Romans did not oc-
cupy local offices and government in Thessalonica,
the city had its own laws and officials called
politarchs (Acts 17:6, 8). Thessalonica was also
capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, and
therefore an ideal location for mission work.
According to Luke, the missionary endeavor oc-
curred in the synagogue of Thessalonica for three
Sabbaths (17:1-2). Of course, Luke was probably
indicating the duration of Pauls ministry in the
synagogue, and not that the church only received a
month or less of instruction. Even after a resistance
to their ministry arose, Paul and Silas continued the
mission work (perhaps for several months), and the
church increased to include a large number of the
God-fearing Greeks and a number of the leading
women (17:4). Although the church in Thessa-
lonica began with Jewish Christians, it increased
quickly in number to include Gentiles predomi-
nantly, as a consequence of the power of the Gospel
(1 Thess 1:5-6, 9-10).
FIRST THESSALONIANS 1 AND THE RAPTURE
Thessalonica was also capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, and
therefore an ideal location for mission work.
View over modern day Thessaloniki
Even with Gods blessing in the missionary
work, there arose much tribulation with the joy
of the Holy Spirit (1 Thess 1:6). The jealousy of
the unbelieving Jews culminated into an uproar.
Moreover, the accusation against Paul and Silas to
the politarchs was that the missionaries were act-
ing contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that
there is another king, Jesus (Acts 17:7). The ac-
cusation would have troubled the populace since
they would have regarded their favored status as a
free city being jeopardized. As a consequence of
the affliction the Thessalonian believers were ex-
periencing, Paul was concerned that the tempta-
tions would overwhelm them and his labor
would be in vain (1 Thes 3:5). He was also dis-
tressed by false teaching that the intense difficul-
ties that the Thessalonians were experiencing was
part of the fulfillment of the prophecies of the
day of the Lord, and this would diminish their
hopes for the Lords imminent return for His
church (1 Thess 1:9-10; 2:17-19; 3:13; 4:13
5:11; 2 Thess 2:1-12). For this reason, he sent
Timothy to encourage and instruct the church (1
Thess 3:1-5).
The good news that Timothy provided to Paul
assisted the Apostle in writing the Epistles to the
Thessalonians. One of the primary doctrines com-
municated in Pauls epistle is the doctrine of the
Lord Jesus return. With references to Jesus as
Lord and to His second coming occurring at
least once in every chapter of the Epistles, this in-
struction is indeed a primary emphasis.

The Thessalonians were experiencing tribulation
just as the Lord Jesus had promised all His disciples
would encounter in any age (John 16:33). So al-
though they faced persecution and hardship, the
wrath to come would not affect them (1 Thess
1:10; 2:14-16). It is worthwhile to note the twelve
words that Paul used in the Thessalonian Epistles
to indicate intense difficulties and experiences.

Each of the twelve words employed by Paul are in
either the aorist or present tense. Readers of Midnight
Call obviously understand the present tense, but may
not be aware of the aorist tense; therefore, the reader
is encouraged to understand the grammatical ele-
ments of the aorist (as provided in the following sen-
tence). The aorist tense normally indicates verbal
action as simply past or without reference to its
progress.
There are other grammatical elements that are also
significant. The indicative mood is used with both the
present and aorist tenses. The aorist indicative nor-
mally denotes an experience as past. The present in-
dicative indicates the verbal action as being actual or
real (as opposed to possibility). The participles de-
note the characteristics of both verb and adjective
(i.e. verbal adjective). The active voice indicates a
subject causing or doing a verbal action, and the pas-
sive voice conveys a subject as being affected or re-
ceiving the verbal action. Understanding these
grammatical elements will provide a better under-
standing of the English translations and the intent of
the biblical author. The tense of the verbs that Paul
used in the Thessalonian Epistles to indicate intense
difficulties and experiences is indeed significant.

Please take the time to understand the biblical
grammar, as it will enrichen and enliven the biblical
text. It is significant that Paul did not use the future
tense, but only the aorist and present tenses. The
Thessalonians rightly believed that birth pangs
(Matt 24:8) would precede the establishment of the
kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. As a conse-
quence of the present afflictions and difficulties
they were experiencing, in addition to false teach-
ings, the Thessalonian church thought they might
be experiencing the seven-year tribulation (the sev-
entieth week of Daniel). The believers were assured
that they were not experiencing the wrath of God
characteristic of that future time (nor will the
church throughout the ages experience the specific
tribulation that culminates in the return of the Lord
to earth). Although their persecutions were real,
they were to live as if the Lord may return in their
own lifetime and rescue them from the wrath to

come (1 Thess 1:9-10) by means of the rapture (cf.

FIRSTTHESSALONIANS 1:8-10
Paul commended the Thessalonians because the
word of the Lord . . . sounded forth from them. Since
the Thessalonian church was young at the time of Pauls
writing, it is improbable that there was any widespread
sending of evangelists or
missionaries, as was true of
the more mature church of
Antioch, Syria (cf. Acts
13). For this reason, it is
best to understand the
sounding forth of the
Word of the Lord as related
to the extensive commerce
that was characteristic of
the city and likely travels of
believers to whom the
Thessalonians would have
certainly shown hospital-
ity. The idea seems to be that a lively faith reverberates
with energy or activity from one person to another. Of
course, this is not the model for obeying the Great
Commission, but it is one means that God will use to
fulfill the command upon the church. Paul also stated,
but also in every place your faith toward God has gone
forth, so that we have no need to say anything. What
was the reason for this marvelous testimony? Paul ex-
plained in verses 9 and 10.
Paul stated, you turned to God from idols to serve
a living and true God. Idols today may differ in form,
but they still epitomize all that people believe consti-
tutes a good life in the absence of God. In modern
terms, this would indicate a completely different pur-
pose of life from those who set the world as their ex-
ample, and as a result of this difference, the church
would have the glorifying of the Lord by His grace and
power as the express purpose in this world.
As expression of this newpurpose in life, Paul com-
mended the church as waiting for Gods Son, Jesus
Christ, from heaven. He did not say that the church
was idle and simply looking into the sky. To wait
(anamenw, ovo:v) is a present infinitive and con-
veys the idea of expectation. Moreover, the Thessalo-
nians were also busy serving God. As Paul instructed
elsewhere, make it your ambition to lead a quiet life
and attend to your own business and work with your
hands, just as we commanded you (1 Thess 4:11).
Attending to ones own
business and working with
ones hands is with a mind-
set that is hopeful concern-
ing the future. Another
meaning of wait is to re-
alize that all work done for
the Lord will be rewarded
or rejected by the Lord Je-
sus Christ when He re-
turns for His church. Such
realization provides the
highest purpose for all
things accomplished in
life. Nothing is wasted or useless in terms of eternity.
Everything done in life is significant regardless of how
tedious a task may seem. Therefore, live with an eter-
nal perspective!
CONCLUSION
The early church expected Jesus to return for
them in their lifetimes. Of course, Christ did not re-
turn, but they had every reason to expect His re-
turn, which is made obvious by Pauls words in 4:17
(Then we [Paul and his readers] who are alive and
remain shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall
always be with the Lord). For over two thousand
years of church history, Christians have been able to
say that the return of the Lord may be today, it may
be tomorrow, or it may happen years from now.
Therefore, plan as if the Lord were not returning for
many years, but live this life thinking, perhaps to-
day. 357

For over two thousand years of church history, Christians have been able
to say that the return of the Lord may be today, it may be tomorrow, or it
may happen years from now. Therefore, plan as if the Lord were not re-
turning for many years, but live this life thinking, perhaps today.

10: The Magic Number of
Endtime Post-Globalism
The problems of the world are huge and they cannot be ignored:
terrorism, war, starvation, displacement, climate change, nuclear
proliferation, trade inequality and financial crisis. The old way hasnt
always worked. Perhaps Mr. Nam has a point. Maybe the magic numbers
work? We have here quoted an international economist who is
responding to a new idea regarding global governance.
B y W i l f r e d H a h n
T
o what magic numbers is he
referring? Actually, he is
wondering just what is the
right number of countries needed
to solve the worlds problems. Is it
the Group of 20 nations (G-20),
the G-8 or some other grouping?
Or, in fact, could it be a group of 10 the
exact number of the last-day 10 kings
that the Bible prophesies will give their
authority to the Antichrist? (Revelation
17:13). To provide more background, the
above-quoted comment was in response
to a provocative and insightful article
written by the influential Moiss Nam,
the well-known Editor-in-Chief of For-
eign Policy magazine and former execu-
tive director of the World Bank.
Interestingly, Mr. Nam recently began
advocating a new conceptglobal mini-
lateralism. (We will explain this term
shortly.) Though he may not realize it, he
strikes upon a very important eschatolog-
ical issue. His recommendations fit hand
in glove with Bible prophecy, but not nec-
essarily in the way popularly thought. He

is talking of a world that is
moving to a post-globalism
state. How can this be? Isnt
globalism a prophetic devel-
opment? Then just what is
this minilateralism, and why
should we care? We will inves-
tigate.
World Now Moving to
Post-Globalism
Globalism is certainly a
hot topic of late. Recent con-
firmations that the Group of 20 (G-20)
is now the prime policy body in the
world is evidence to many observers
that globalism is indeed forging ahead.
Whereas smaller groups such as the G-7
determined global policy direction in
the past, this power nexus has now
moved to the G-20 forum, which also
includes such countries as Brazil and
China. Quoting one of literally hun-
dreds of comments from international
relations experts, A striking outcome
of the global financial crisis has been
the substitution of the G-7 for the G-20
as the key forum for international coor-
dination.
1
Widely seen, this is a clear step in the
direction of globalism. Most certainly,
the recent G-20 proceedings held in
Pittsburgh, United States, produced
many boastful statements about the new
resolve and capabilities of this august
group. It seeks to solve problems it has
defined from Global Warming to global
financial instabilities. Will it be success-
ful? It is almost certain that it will prove
to be another ineffectual group, its great
pronouncements nothing more than
theatre and pomp. At this point, there is
virtually no consensus as to why global
imbalances and the Global Financial
Crisis (GFC) occurred in the first place.
With such confusion, how could they
agree on solutions?
Bible prophecy backs up this opinion.
In fact, globalism is not the final, exclu-
sive power organization of an endtime
world. We can already today see evidence
that this shift could happen very soon. To
explain why, lets first review the concept
of globalism.
Globalism: Prophetic but Overdone
Referencing some common definitions:
Globalism is an ideology that empha-
sizes the current trend toward interna-
tional organizations and institutions.
2
Says the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is
a national policy of treating the whole
world as a proper sphere for political in-
fluence.
Many debate and write about global-
isms implications for mankindwhether
beneficial or disastrous. Though the term
globalism is a new one (the word only
coined as recently as the 1940s), count-
less thousands of books and articles have
been written on this topic. Indeed, the
world itself has become a political
podium, the actions of most individual
nations postured for a global audience.
Yes, the global village is getting smaller
by virtue of becoming more connected fi-
nancially and economically (this being
globalization). There is also convergence
of ideology and culture, though not as ad-
vanced as global trade and financial sys-
tems. And, of course, globalism is a topic
Most certainly,

proceedings

capabilities of

group. It seeks

that is a favorite of many conspiracy
theorists.
To be clear, the Bible clearly does
prophesy that globalism will take place
in the last days. God often pronounces
his last-day judgments upon all the na-
tions collectively, as they are all en-
gaged in rebelliousness, are pursuing
similar ideologies and together rise up
against Israel. For example, Come
near, you nations, and listen; pay at-
tention, you peoples! Let the earth
hear, and all that is in it, the world,
and all that comes out of it! The LORD
is angry with all nations; his wrath is
upon all their armies. He will totally
destroy them, he will give them over to
slaughter (Isaiah 34:1-2).
From prophecy we can know that
the world would have forums such as
the United Nations and global media
networks that would be representative
of world opinion and consensus.
When Balaam prophesied, For from
the top of the rocks I see him, and
from the hills I behold him: lo, the
people shall dwell alone, and shall not
be reckoned among the nations
(Numbers 23:9, KJV), this presumed
that the worldthe nations collec-
tivelywas united in not reckoning
Israel. As it happens, that state of af-
fairs exists today.
Yet, while globalism in the sense al-
ready defined does occur and persist,
the world in fact does move to a post-
globalism state. Here, we can rely on
Biblical proof. The global parliament
of man, as Alfred Tennyson called it,
3
will not rule the world in the end.
Globalism is not the last state. Then
what is? There are two regimes that
come afterminilateralism (Nams
word invention) and autocracy the
form of government in which the po-
litical power is held by a single, self-
appointed ruler.
Two More Regimes Follow Modern
Globalism
The last state of world rule is repre-
sented by the 8th king mentioned in Rev-
elation 17:11. He follows 7 previous
world gentile ruler kings that are shown
as heads in Johns vision of the 7-headed
beast that is ridden by the prostitute in
Revelation 17. This image depicts consec-
utive dominating nation states and their
founding kings. The 8th king is the Beast
himself. But though he belongs to the
seven (verse 11), he also comes from
among the last-day 10 kings. He is the
little one, which came up among them
(Daniel 7:8).
Therefore, it is the 10-king period of
rulership that is next to appear, not yet
this final 8
th
king who will rule the world
(this being the Antichrist). The 10 kings
preceede the Antichrist, as Daniel makes
clear in no uncertain terms: The ten
horns are ten kings who will come from
this kingdom. After them another king
will arise, different from the earlier ones
(Daniel 7:24). In conclusion, the 10 kings
collectively represent the 7
th
head, which
follows the 6
th
Roman headbut preced-
ing the Antichrist, who then becomes the
8
th
beastly king.
All of this makes for a fascinating
study. Unfortunately, we can only
touch on a few of the salient points
here. The important point to recognize
is that the next stage of world ruler-
ship will be represented by a 10-nation
coalition, though it will only be in ex-
istence for a very short period (Revela-
tion 17:12). It has yet to appear. As
close as it may be, it does not yet exist.
Why Might Globalism Be Super-
seded?
Obviously, a state of affairs where a
coalition of 10 nations rules the world
stands against the implicit goal of global-
ism the idea that all mankind and na-

tions are unified in determining the
worlds fate. But why? Something addi-
tional to globalism takes place.
Now, let us allow Mr. Nam to speak:
When was the last time you heard that a
large number of countries agreed to a major
international accord on a pressing issue?
Not in more than a decade. The last success-
ful multilateral trade agreement dates back
to 1994, when 123 countries gathered to ne-
gotiate the creation of the World Trade Or-
ganization and agreed on a new set of rules
for international trade. Since then, all other
attempts to reach a global trade deal have
crashed. The same is true with multilateral
efforts to curb nuclear proliferation; the last
significant international nonproliferation
agreement was in 1995, when 185 countries
agreed to extend an existing nonprolifera-
tion treaty. In the decade and a half since,
multilateral initiatives have not only failed,
but India, Pakistan, and North Korea have
demonstrated their certain status as nuclear
powers. On the environment, the Kyoto Pro-
tocol, a global deal aimed at reducing
greenhouse gas emissions, has been ratified
by 184 countries since it was adopted in
1997, but the United States, the worlds sec-
ond-largest air polluter after China, has not
done so, and many of the signatories have
missed their targets. The pattern is clear:
Since the early 1990s, the need for effective
multicountry collaboration has soared, but
at the same time multilateral talks have in-
evitably failed; deadlines have been missed;
financial commitments and promises have
not been honored; execution has stalled;
and international collective action has fallen
far short of what was offered and, more im-
portantly, needed. These failures represent
not only the perpetual lack of international
consensus, but also a flawed obsession with
multilateralism as the panacea for all the
worlds ills. It has become far too dangerous
to continue to rely on large-scale multilat-
eral negotiations that stopped yielding re-
sults almost two decades ago. So what is to
be done? To start, lets forget about trying to
get the planets nearly 200 countries to
agree. We need to abandon that fools er-
rand in favor of a new idea: minilateralism.
By minilateralism, I mean a smarter, more
targeted approach: We should bring to the
table the smallest possible number of coun-
tries needed to have the largest possible im-
pact on solving a particular problem. Think
of this as minilateralisms magic number.

Cutting to the nub of Mr. Nams argu-
ment: Todays multilateral globalism
amounts to little more than beating the

gums. It is ineffective there is no ac-
countability no power to enforce
change. He is saying that a small group of
powerful nationsnot the global, tooth-
less forum such as the United Nations
with its 192 members should therefore
dictate global agendas.
But why is this important and neces-
sary? Well, to Mr. Nams mind, because
the world faces huge, disastrous problems
that must be fixed. These emergencies
present and potentially futuretherefore
provide the imperative for a smaller
group of nations, who together have
dominant power, to seize the global
agenda.
This is an earth-changing perspective.
Yet, it fits the current and coming times.
It is very possible that the Global Finan-
cial Crisis (GFC) stands to be a major cat-
alyst to this new state of world rulership.
A World Set-up for Domination
It is a fact that power in the world to-
day is not equally distributed. Global
power has many forms. We can categorize
them into two broad typesHard Power
and Soft Power. Soft Power includes vari-
ous forms of world influence. Here can be
number memberships on world transna-
tional organizations such as the Interna-
tional Monetary Fund or NATO (and a
host of many others), or influence upon
world culture. Hard Power, by compari-
son, is more direct and can include such
factors as military might, the size of
world trade in goods and services, a
countrys relative population size and so
on.
Two obstructions stand in the way of
the emergence of the 7th head of world
rule, this being the 10-king Global Power
Coalition. The first is that one nation to-
day is still a superpower. This is the
United States. For the most part, it can do
as it wishes and need not comply with the
rules set by world multilateral organiza-
tions. Before a 10-nation coalition can
rule the world, it will require that the dis-
tribution of power in the world be rela-
tively leveled out among the leading
nations. Whatever the allied group that
will seize world power, it must collec-
tively be able to overcome any super-
power. Otherwise, it could not exist
uncontested. This development is called
multipolarism and is already well un-
derway. (Please see the 2-part series enti-
tled Endtime Shoe: Fitting the World for
Ten ToesMCM, January and February
2009for a detailed review of this devel-
opment.)
The second structure that obstructs the
emergence of a 10-nation Power Coalition
is as Mr. Nam already describedthe in-
effectiveness of todays globalism, which
involves every country, whether significant
or a small nation-state on a pacific, tropical
island.
The logical path therefore, is both mul-
tipolarism and minilateralism. The former
broadens the power and neutralizes the
lone superpowers; the latter centralizes
global power to a smaller group, thereby
circumventing globalisms organizational
mire. As Goldilocks observed, something
in the middle is needed it will be a beast
but not a baby bear nor a papa bear,
but a mama bear.
The Power of Ten
How many nations will it require to
reach a position of global dominance? Not
many certainly not 20. Why? Consider
the distribution of various economic, fi-
nancial and other power measures in the
world today. Of the many factors that we
could outline, reflect on the following:
The 10 largest economies in the world
represent 68% of world output.
Concerning world government debt,
10 nations account for 79%. Interestingly,
the bigger economies in the world are ac-
tually more indebted than the rest of the

Interestingly, the
bigger
economies in
the world are
actually more
indebted than
the rest of the
world. That fits
with prophecies
that suggest the
final ruler will be
indebted
(Habakkuk 2:6-
8).
10: The Magic Number of Endtime Post-Globalism
world. That fits with prophecies that sug-
gest the final ruler will be indebted
(Habakkuk 2:6-8).
The countries with the 10 largest
stock markets account for
75.4% of world value in
US dollar terms (end
2008).
The 153 members of
the World Trade Organiza-
tion represent about 95%
of world trade. The na-
tions that are the top-10
global exporters of goods
and services alone account
for 53%.
5
The 10 most popu-
lous nations in the world
account for 66% of the worlds population.
No matter which measure we may use,
we will find that it only requires 10 or so
nations to reach a majority or balance of
dominance. We see that the nations of the
world are already ideally aligned for the
emergence of the prophesied multipolar,
minilateralist state shown as the 10-king
Global Power Coalition.
Along Comes the Global Financial
Crisis
World policymakers and financial econ-
omists are hopeful that the new initiatives
set by the Pittsburgh round of G-20 meet-
ings will lead to resolution of the Global
Financial Crisis. I believe that such expec-
tations will be sorely disappointed. The G-
20 has no means of enforcing the
implementation of its resolutions. The ac-
tions of individual countries will continue
to be driven by the interests of their own
domestic political agenda. Self-interests
will inevitably rule and in some cases,
stand directly counter to the stated goals of
the G-20.
Actually, this is already the case and
cannot be denied. Currently, the interests
of various major countries couldnt be
more opposite in some respects. For exam-
ple, in some respects the interests of the
United States and Europe are opposite to
that of China and India. These two na-
tions, accounting for ap-
proximately two-fifths
of the world population,
see it as necessary to
continue to expand
trade. China and other
Asian countries deliber-
ately keep their curren-
cies low to ensure that
their exports are com-
petitively priced. This in
turn causes Americans
to lose jobs and external
deficits to remain high.
The U.S. and other advanced members of
the G-20 want China to encourage its citi-
zens to spend more on consumption and
export less. In the meantime, North Amer-
ican consumers love the cheap prices of
imported Chinese products that they can
buy at Wal-Mart. How to resolve this is-
sue? There are many more intractable
problems that will not be resolved by the
G-20.
As it is, China (most likely also India
and Japan) and some Middle Eastern
countries such as Iran will not be part of
the 10-nation coalition. This can be de-
duced from Bible prophecy. They are nei-
ther nations comprised of Roman peoples
or their offshoots, or already were king-
doms in power at the time that John re-
ceived the prophecies of the book of
Revelation. He prophesied at that time that
The ten horns you saw are ten kings who
have not yet received a kingdom (Revela-
tion 17:12). As China already existed then,
it is not one of the countries that will be
part of the 10-king group.

eage erain which we are living today.
Globalism has flourished to its late-date
state. Now, we are likely very near em-
barking into the 7th head era, which is
ruled by a 10-nation coalition.
It could very well be that the Global
Financial Crisis and its future fall-out
will prove to be the catalysts that will
bring the world to a state of minilateral-
ism. In the meantime, such countries as
China and other emerging nations are
fast accumulating economic power. Al-
ready, the economies of the non-ad-
vanced members of the G-20 nations
have surpassed that of the advanced
members. It is quite possible that the en-
tire east-Asian orb of nations along with
China could be in opposition to the final
10-kings. This very development could
be seen to actually hasten the 10-king
formation. In such a scenario, these 10
nations would need to ally themselves
against any opposition before it is too
late.
Minilateralism is not as cute or tooth-
less as the prefix mini implies. The
concept of minilateralism for the time be-
ing is meant by Mr. Nam as a collabora-
tive, peaceful process. In the end,
however, it is more likely to result in
policies of exclusion and oppression.

The third in a se-
ries of American
Religious Identification
Surveys (ARIS), carried
out by the Program on
Public Values at Trinity
College in Connecticut,
contained results that
might surprise those who
maintain that the United
States has become an increasingly religious
society.
The 2008 ARIS survey, reported in March
2009, found a consolidation and strengthening
of shifts reported in the 2001 survey. Specifi-
cally, the percentage of American claiming no
religion, which jumped from 8.2 in 1990 to 14.2
in 2001, has now increased to 15 percent.
In fact, given the estimated growth of the
American adult population since the last cen-
sus from 207 million to 228 million, that reflects
an additional 4.7 million Nones, says survey
authors Barry Kosmin and Ariela Keysar. They
are director and associate director, respec-
tively, of Trinitys Institute for the Study of Sec-
ularism in Society and Culture.
The most significant influence on Ameri-
can religious geography over time has been
the increase in the Nones, or No Religion
bloc, the authors say, Nationally the Nones
more than doubled in numbers from 1990 to
2008 and almost doubled their share of the
adult population, from 8 percent in 1990 to 15
percent in 2008. Moreover, they report, The
Nones increased in numbers and proportion in
every state, census division, and region of the
countryfrom 1990 to 2008. No other reli-
gious bloc has kept such a pace in every
state.

These findings are in line with the
worlds population within the progressive
nations. Yet religion will remain popular,
primarily due to the reason of presumed
advantages. But whether genuine or fake,
in the end, the whole world will be very
religious: And all that dwell upon the
earth shall worship him, whose names are

Residents of a rural Australian town hop-
ing to protect the Earth and their wallets
have voted to ban the sale of bottled water, the
first community in the countryand possibly the
worldto take such a drastic step in the growing
backlash against the industry.
Residents of Bundanoon cheered after their
near-unanimous approval of the measure at a
town meeting. It was the second blow to Aus-
tralias beverage industry that day.
Earlier the New South Wales state premier
banned all state departments and agencies from
buying bottled water, calling it a waste of money.
-Financial Times, 10 July 2009, pg. 2
When it comes to water, Australia is the dri-
est continent on earth. Thus Australians seems
to value water properly. They dont need spe-
cial bottled water, for water is water.
We are reminded here of eternal Water,
which is free: And he said unto me, It is
done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning
and the end. I will give unto him that is
athirst of the fountain of the water of life
freely (Revelation 21:6). 3557

The annual Hurun Report said China has
130 known dollar billionaires, up from 101
last year. The number in the United States is 359
while Russia has 32 and India 24, according to
Forbes magazine.
Chinas rich are getting richer, with the average
wealth on the list $571 million, up almost one-third
fromlast year, said compiler Rupert Hoogewerf.
With the greatest wealth destruction in the west
of the last 70 years, weve seen China buck the
trend and the wealth seems to be still growing,
Hoogewerf told Reuters on the sidelines of an event
to unveil the 2009 rich list.
They've put the credit crunch behind them, he
said. The key driver has been urbanization. Youve
got all these cities being built, and that requires
property developers, iron and steel manufacturers.
The latest thing is cars.
Topping the list was Wang Chuanfu, chairman of
electric car and battery maker BYD Co. Ltd., in
which U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett holds a stake,
with an estimated personal wealth of $5.1 billion. He
was also the fastest riser from last year, up 102
places.
Second place went to Zhang Yin and family,
owner of paper recycler Nine Dragons Paper, while
in third place was Xu Rongmao and family, owner of
Shimao Property Holdings Ltd.
Hoogewerf said the actual number of dollar bil-
lionaires could be higher than estimated.
Either they are super-discreet, or perhaps they
havent come to the surface, he said. Having said
that, the transparency of wealth ... is nowvery much
in the open. Theres many more listed companies.
Hoogewerf said people who probably should
have been listed, but about whose wealth not
enough is known, included Liu Chuanzhi, chairman
of the worlds No. 4 PC maker Lenovo, and Chen
Feng, founder of HainanAirlines.
-news.yahoo.com, 13 October 2009
At the time of the greatest
wealth destruction in the West of
the last 70 years, China continues
to grow richer, as is evident from
this report. Although China is also
experiencing economic and finan-
cial difficulties, they have the advantage,
namely an accumulated volume of foreign cur-
rency and foreign assets. In contrast, the
United States is deeply in debt to communist
China and to many other nations. What does
this development show us? Nothing more and
nothing less than that communismis becoming
an equal partner with American-type capital-
ism and European socialism. They will all be
forced to work together more closely to attain a
solidified newNewWorld Order. 3645

An officer in Britains domestic security ser-
vice, MI5, is currently being investigated by
British police over allegations that he tortured Mr.
Mohamed. The UK police already have access to
the seven-paragraph document, which amounts to
a briefing note drawn up by the CIAand handed to
the MI5 officer before his interrogation began.
The issue before the High Court was whether
the document should now be published. A large
number of media organizations have argued that
publication is in the public interest and the courts
agreed, saying there was a compelling case for it.
Britains opposition Conservatives believe the
UK should tell the Obama administration it wants
to see publication to underline Britains determina-
tion to deal with allegations of torture. But British
diplomats fear that publication will damage the
much celebrated special relationship between the
US and UK.
The UK has produced documents in this case
showing that the CIA and the Obama administra-
tion have objected to publicationeven though
this relates to events during the years when
George W. Bush was president. A letter from the
CIAto the British government spells out the conse-
quences if the UK courts force publication. We will
necessarily have to review with the greatest care
the sensitivity of information we can provide in fu-
ture, the letter states.
-Financial Times, 17 October 2009, pg. 4
This report shows that even top-secret in-
formation is now subject to publication. The
days are gone when governments could hide
activities contrary to the general public moral
code. Leaders were able to indoctrinate their
citizens about another country at will. Today,
with internet connection, satellite telephone,
and the capability of traveling around the
globe in 24 hours, the world has been brought
closer together now more than ever. But that
is not all: this process will continue in order to
form a truly global consensus, which quite
naturally will lead to global government.

DECEMBER 2009 35
The country first got into debt to help pay
for the Revolutionary War. Growing ever
since, the debt stands today at a staggering
$11.4 trillionequivalent to about $37,000 for
each and every American. And its expanding by
over $1 trillion a year.
The mountain of debt easily could become
the next full-fledged economic crisis without firm
action from Washington, economists of all stripes
warn.
Unless we demonstrate a strong commit-
ment to fiscal sustainability in the longer term, we
will have neither financial stability nor healthy
economic growth, Federal Reserve Chairman
Ben Bernanke recently told Congress.
Higher taxes, or reduced federal benefits and
servicesor a combination of bothmay be the
inevitable consequences.
The national debt has expanded during times
of war and usually contracted in times of peace,
while staying on a generally upward trajectory.
Over the past several decades, it has climbed
sharplyexcept for a respite from 1998 to 2000,
when there were annual budget surpluses, re-
flecting in large part what turned out to be an
overheated economy.
The debt soared with the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan and economic stimulus spending
under President George W. Bush and now
Obama.
This years deficit is now estimated at about
$1.85 trillion.
Deficits dont reflect holdover indebtedness
from previous years. Some spending items
such as emergency appropriations bills and re-
ceipts in the Social Security programarent
included, either, although they are part of the na-
tional debt.
The national debt is a broader, and more
telling, way to look at the governments balance
sheets than glancing at deficits.
According to the Treasury Department,
which updates the number to the penny every
few days, the national debt was
$11,518,472,742,288 on 1 July.
The overall debt is now slightly over 80 per-
cent of the annual output of the entire U.S.
economy, as measured by the gross domestic
product.
Where does the government borrow all this
money from?
The debt is largely financed by the sale of
Treasury bonds and bills.
Treasury securities are suitable for individual
investors and popular with other countries, es-
pecially China, Japan and the Persian Gulf oil
exporters, the three top foreign holders of U.S.
debt.
But as the U.S. spends trillions to stabilize
the recession-wracked economy, helping to
force down the value of the dollar, the securities
become less attractive as investments. Some
major foreign lenders are already paring back
on their purchases of U.S. bonds and other se-
curities.
And if major holders of U.S. debt were to
flee, it would send shock waves through the
global economyand sharply force up U.S. in-
terest rates.
As time goes by, demographics suggest
things will get worse before they get better, even
after the recession ends, as more baby boomers
retire and begin collecting Social Security and
Medicare benefits.
Some budget-restraint activists claim even
the debt understates the nations true liabilities.
The Peter G. Peterson Foundation, estab-
lished by a former commerce secretary and in-
vestment banker, argues that the $11.4 trillion
debt figure does not take into account roughly
$45 trillion in unlisted liabilities and unfunded re-
tirement and health care commitments.
That would put the nations full obligations
at $56 trillion, or roughly $184,000 per Ameri-
can, according to this calculation.

tional debt breakdown: http://tinyurl.com/yrxrsh

Although the U.S.A. was and is the
major contributor to the eco-
nomic/financial near disaster, virtually
all other countries are involved. It stands
to reason, therefore, that new regula-
tions, stricter enforcement, and more
control must be employed to guarantee
the functioning of a world economy. Fur-
thermore, it is evident that Americas
dominating power will continue to de-
crease, as interdependence becomes the
only viable option for survival. However,
no matter how secure the eco-
nomic/financial global system, the end
result will nevertheless be utter catastro-
phe. We have the description in Revela-
tion 18, particularly verses 11 and 19:
And the merchants of the earth shall

The Founding Fathers left one legacy not celebratedonInde-
pendence Day but whichaffects us all. Its the national debt.

The courts ruling decriminalizes homo-

sexuality and while it applies only in the
Indian capital, activists said it has national
repercussions.
The constitutional challenge to Indias ban
has been watched closely by gay activists
across Asia and Africa, especially former
colonies of the British, who decriminalized ho-
mosexuality at home in 1967. The verdict was
also praised by human rights groups and the
UN.
However, Indian religious organizations,
which carry considerable political clout in a con-
stitutionally secular but religiously conservative
society, expressed dismay. Father Babu
Joseph, a Catholic priest, said: We cannot af-
ford to endorse homosexuality as normal and
socially acceptable.
The eight-year-old constitutional challenge
to Article 377 was mounted by the Naz Foun-
dation (India), an organization that promotes
safe-sex practices among homosexual men to
reduce their risk of contracting HIV/Aids.
Indias left-leaning Congress-led adminis-
tration must now decide whether to appeal
against the verdict to the Supreme Court.

The Bible does not mince words about
the issue of sodomites: Wherefore God
also gave them up to uncleanness through
the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour
their own bodies between themselvesFor
this cause God gave themup unto vile affec-
tions: for even their women did change the
natural use into that which is against nature:
And likewise also the men, leaving the nat-
ural use of the woman, burned in their lust
one toward another; men with men working
that which is unseemly, and receiving in
themselves that recompence of their error
which was meet. And even as they did not
like to retain God in their knowledge, God
gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do
those things which are not convenient (Ro-

Listings
Beijing will finally start allowing foreign
companies to list in China, reflecting its
ambitions to open up the countrys financial
sector and transform Shanghai into an interna-
tional financial center.
I think some time early next year we will
have one or two foreign companies listed on
the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Fang Xinghai,
director-general of the Shanghai governments
Financial Services Office, told the Financial
Times.
Very likely, the Shanghai Stock Exchange
will get an international board, and [foreign
companies] would be subject to a different set
of listing rules, which would suit foreign com-
panies and which would also make sure that
there will be adequate information for Chinese
investors. The market regulator controlled by
the central government must sign off on the
decision. But Mr. Fang said this was the likely
outcome.
Mr. Fang said foreign listings would start
with a pilot phase, an approach China has of-
ten taken in the past 30 years to test market
reforms before adopting them more broadly.
There will not be dozens and dozens of for-
eign companies in the short term, but things
will be done in a gradual fashion.
Mr. Fang added that the establishment of a
separate board was designed to circumvent
the problem foreign companies tend to have
with Chinas strict disclosure rules.

Communist China has become a fa-
vorite investment country for the world.
When it comes to trade balance, the British
paper, The Economist, shows China with
the highest account balance of $364.4B in
its favor, compared to $628.3B in the red
for the United States. Chinas centrally-
steered communist economy continues to
grow unabated in spite of the global reces-

to Chinas strict disclosure rules. 3617

Global Authority
for Economy
PopeBenedict calledfor a
worldpolitical authorityto
managetheglobal economy
andfor moregovernment

economiesto
pull theworld
out of thecur-
rent crisisand
avoidarepeat.
The pope made his
call for a re-think of
the way the world economy
was run in a new encyclical
which touched on a number
of social issues but whose
main connecting thread was
how the current crisis has af-
fected both rich and poor na-
tions.
Parts of the encyclical, titled Charity in Truth,
seemed bound to upset free marketers because
of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism
and unregulated market forces, which he said had
led to thoroughly destructive abuse of the sys-
tem and grave deviations and failures.
An encyclical is the highest form of papal writ-
ing and gives the clearest indication to the worlds
1.1 billion Catholicsand to non-Catholicsof
what the pope and the Vatican think about specific
social and moral issues.
The pope said every economic decision had a
moral consequence and called for forms of redis-
tribution of wealth overseen by governments to
help those most affected by crises.
Benedict said there is an urgent need of a
true world political authority whose task would be
to manage the global economy; to revive
economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deteriora-
tion of the present crisis and the greater imbal-
ances that would result.
Such an authority would have to be regulated
by law and would need to be universally recog-
nized and to be vested with the effective power to
ensure security for all, regard for justice, and re-
spect for rights.
Obviously it would have to have the authority
to ensure compliance with its decisions from all
parties, and also with the coordinated measures
adopted in various international forums, he said.
The United Nations, economic institutions and
international finance all had to
be reformed even in the midst
of a global recession, he said
in the encyclical, a booklet of
141 pages.
The conviction that the
economy must be au-
tonomous, that it must be
shielded from influences of a
moral character, has led man
to abuse the economic process
in a thoroughly destructive
way, he said.
In the long term, these
convictions have led to eco-
nomic, social and political sys-
tems that trample upon personal and social
freedom and are therefore unable to deliver the
justice that they promise, he added.
Profit was useful only if it served as a means
to a brighter future for all humanity.
Once profit becomes the exclusive goal, if it is
produced by improper means and without the
common good as its ultimate end, it risks destroy-
ing wealth and creating poverty, he said.
He said the current economic crisis was clear
proof of pernicious effects of sin in the economy.
Financiers must rediscover the genuinely eth-
ical foundation of their activity, he said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had
rebuked the pope earlier this year at the height of
the row over a Holocaust-denying bishop, wel-
comed the encyclical as important encourage-
ment for world leaders ahead of a G8 meeting in
Italy.
Pope Benedict has encouraged the state
leaders to create rules so that this sort of world-
wide economic crisis isnt repeated, Merkel told
reporters. I also saw this as an order to work to-
ward a social market economy in the world.
-reuters.com, 7 July 2009
Politics, economy, and religion can no
longer be divided: they have become one.
What is lacking apparently is a centralized
global system able to write and enforce
global laws. That is in the works right now.
Almost 2,000 years ago, the prophecy
was made about our time: For all nations
have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication, and the kings of the earth have
committed fornication with her, and the
merchants of the earth are waxed rich
through the abundance of her delicacies
(Revelation 18:3). Fornication repre-
sents religion, kings the worlds politi-
cal elite, and merchants symbolize the
economy.

the birthrate back to a sustainable level, the
new government has promised to ease the ex-
pense of raising children in this island nation.
According to government minister Mizuho
Fukushima, previous administrations have
been weak on providing financial support even
though they have taken steps to tackle the
daycare shortage problems. Now, Japan is
going to provide childcare support as much as
it can to create a society where Japanese
people can have a dream of raising children,
Bloomberg quoted him as saying.
Mr. Hatoyama has vowed to spend 16.8 tril-
lion yen ($186 billion) to pull the country out of
its economic slump in a package that includes
provisions such as tuition aid and child sup-
port to make raising children easier.
Families would receive 13,000 yen ($144) a
month per child under 15 in the year beginning
April 2010 and 26,000 yen a month the follow-
ing year if his plan is approved.
Ms. Fukushima, the leder of the Social De-
mocratic Party (SDP), says monthly al-
lowances are not enough on their own. She
says that more than 30,000 children are on
daycare center waiting lists so money is
needed to provide more childcare. She says
requiring health insurance to cover fertility
treatments may also be a good idea.
Meanwhile, the total fertility ratethe aver-

Another incentive to go electronic;
thats the future. A government-issued

the final identity document. However,
common sense progress for the new world

away from the dreaded Mark of the Beast,
the tendency toward total

Birth and death rates of Japan since 1950

However grand or modest, everyone must
have a funeral and publicly listed death
care providers offer a way to profit fromnature taking
its course.
Yet even this $15bn a year business has not
been recession-proof. Operating earnings of the four
largest vertically integrated operators of funeral
homes and cemeteries fell by between 10 and 38
percent over the past six months, compared with a
year earlier.
At an average cost of $7,323 for a traditional bur-
ial, plus another $2,500 or so for a cemetery plot, fu-
nerals are typically the largest purchase an American
makes aside from a house or car.
It would be tempting to assume profits are down
because cash-strapped mourners are economizing,
but that is not the case.
Even in a slumping economy, those in the funeral
business say it is rare for bereaved relatives to hag-
gle, and prices have even risen moderately.
The exception is the large numbers of pre-need
customers, who pay for their arrangements in ad-
vance. Not only are some opting to shop around on
items such as coffins, nowavailable at discount retailer
Costco, but more are postponing their purchases.
This squeezes a key profit source for the industry
because pre-purchased funerals, while allowing buy-
ers to avoid inflation until the time of deathtypically
10-12 yearsare not sold at a discount.
Other trends are threatening profits. America has
gone through a death trough in the past decade, with
around 2.4mpeople dying each year. Awave of ageing
baby boomers should push this to 3.4m in the next
quarter century.
But the industry remains creative about selling ex-
pensive accoutrements, including elaborate urns to
those choosing cremation. It has even been marketing
the opportunity to have artificial diamonds made from
loved-ones ashes.
Keen to express their individuality, even posthu-
mously, baby boomers may yet prove a profitable
group for the death care providers.
-Financial Times, 10February2009, pg. 17
Preparation for funeral expenses has devel-
oped into an elaborate and profitable business.
What is lacking
is preparation for eternity.
Here the Bible has much to say. To the first
man God pronounced this judgment: In the
sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou
return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou
taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt
thou return (Genesis 3:19). Jesus asked two
questions in Matthew 16:26 regarding eter-
nity: For what is a man profited, if he shall
gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
or what shall a man give in exchange for his
soul? And Hebrews 9:27 confirms: And as it
is appointed unto men once to die, but after
this the judgment.
Death does not end in non-existence but is the
beginning of eternity. John 3:36 speaks of the
two groups: He that believeth on the Son hath
everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son
shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on
him. The answer to Martha, whose brother had
died, is given in John 11:25-26: Jesus said unto
her, I amthe resurrection, and the life: he that be-
lieveth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he
live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me
shall never die. Believest thou this? 3646

(1.33) and Italy (1.35). The average number of
children born by women in the US is 2.1.
Since the 1970s, socioeconomic changes
encouraged Japanese to marry later, if they
marry at all.
Long working hours, the rising cost of chil-
drearing and mothers large responsibility for
raising a child have also cut the birth rate,
says Yasuko Oshima, a senior economist at
Mizuho Research Institute. Parents are also
having a hard time making work and childrear-
ing compatible.

Japan is certainly one of the super-rich
countries. This relatively small island nation
has become the technological miracle of the
world. When it comes to healthcare, they
have surpassed even France, which prided it-
self as the worlds healthcare champion.
Also, Japanese people have the highest life
expectancy in the industrial world. But now,
Japans population could shrink by 25 per-
cent. That could cause irreparable damage to
Japans leading position.
What is the reason? One word: money.
The richest nations in the world are the ones
with the lowest birth rate. The race toward
more money, more possessions, and more
comfort translates into less time. Thus chil-
dren become a hindrance to the aspirations
and dreams of upwardly mobile people.
What does the Bible say? Lo, children
are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit
of the womb is his reward. As arrows are
in the hand of a mighty man; so are chil-
dren of the youth. Happy is the man that
hath his quiver full of them: they shall not
be ashamed, but they shall speak with the
enemies in the gate (Psalm 127:3-5). 3647

Inerrancy of Scripture
Dear Editor,
Ive recently received one of your
mailouts concerning materials
available in light of events and
prophecy issues. I would be some-
what interested in some of it, but at
this time, Im not able to subscribe
though I appreciate the offers.
I do believe there is and must be
a God, the Creator; that He created
mankind in his image, and was
smart enough to do so, versus the
evolution theory.
Ive recently for a while now
been having trouble with Matthew
16:28, and of course two of the
three remaining gospels that share
the same information. Even though
Ive been a believer for years and
have read and studied on it, there
doesnt seem to be a clear answer,
even among clergy and noted
scholars.
By trying to weigh out things in
an evidence fashion, and seeing
that the Lord didnt return in their
time with His kingdom, one could
arrive to at least a possible conclu-
sion, as with the Jews, that Jesus
and those events in the New Testa-
ment didnt happen.
Other New Testament Scriptures
say and indicate that God is not the
author of confusion, and I believe
that is so. With accounts like those
given in Matthew 16:28, and also
those concerning how Judas died
in two opposing accounts in the
New Testament, it would seem to
nullify or discredit the New Testa-
ment at least.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I would appreciate return
correspondence if you can or
if you have any insight on
those critical items and
Scriptures mentioned. Have
meant no offense, but I know
that the unsure or the un-
known of what should be re-
ality might not come easy.
-R. Sawyer, TX
Answer: Some people doubt for
the sake of doubting, while others
have doubts for the sake of truth.
I pray that you are of the latter kind.
You are seeking intellectual an-
swers to spiritual questions. Take
scientists, for example: if they had
no faith in their work, they would
cease immediately. Long before
there was a motor vehicle, light
bulb, telephone, airplane, splitting
of the atoms, etc., the scientists be-
lieved that it could be achieved but
in the beginning, they had no
proof.
In spiritual matters, we must go
from the basis of Hebrews 11:1:
Faith is the substance of things
hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen. Spiritual faith may not
see the end result, however, as the
scientist does.
In one case, Matthew 16:28 is ful-
filled in John the Revelator, for ex-
ample. Revelation 4 reveals that he
saw all of human history from the
beginning to the end, which in-
cludes the coming of his king-
dom. Scripture does not depend
on our intellectual capacity, partic-
ularly where time is concerned, be-
cause Holy Scripture is from
eternity to eternity.
Does that make sense intellectu-
ally? Not at all, For the preaching
of the cross is to them that perish
foolishness (1 Corinthians 1:18).
Why? Because the natural man re-
ceiveth not the things of the Spirit
of God: for they are foolishness
unto him: neither can he know
them, because they are spiritually
discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Now to your reference to
Matthew 27:5 and Acts 1:18. There
is no contradiction. Judas hanged
himself. Later, Acts reports that his
body fell down and burst asunder
in the midst. This is the same
event: one reports what he did, the
other reports how it ended.
You write that you believe, yet
your unbelief is apparently
stronger; thus you continue to
search for contradictions, accord-
ing to your understanding. You
need to search Him who is the truth
in person, the Lord Jesus Christ. In
faith, grasp the simple invitation Je-
sus gives, Him that cometh unto
me, I will in no wise cast out. From
that moment, Scripture will be
opened to you and you will contin-
uously receive wonderful answers
directly from the Lord through His
Spirit when you read His Word.
I have prayed that you will go that
path.
Great White Throne
Dear Sir:
Thank you for the publica-
tion Midnight Call, with its
great focus on eschatology. This
area of the Bible appears much
neglected in our churches. I am
leading a small home study
group in study of Revelation.
My questionGod is love.
The Bible teaches us to love our
enemies. How do we reconcile
loving our enemies with Gods
treatment of His enemies at the
Great White Throne judgment?
Here He gives their spirits new
resurrected bodies and casts
them into the eternal agony of
hell. I dont question Gods
judgment, but from my stand-
point, it seems there might be a
more humane solution.
A second question: How do
you view the issue of degrees of
hell? Does not the Bible indi-
cate this? Are all non-Chris-
tians to get the same treatment
as Satan and his demons?
-W. Ragland, AZ
Answer: Enemies on earth and en-
emies before the Great White
Throne are two different groups.
Enemies on earth have the capacity
to make a decision either for or
against Jesus; for those before the
Great White Throne, it is too late.
We believers are called to total and
unconditional surrender to our
Lord, which will result in the filling
of the Holy Spirit; subsequently, this
will result in the enlightenment of
those who are in darkness (ene-
mies).
At the Great White Throne, we do
not read of the presence of Jesus,
the Lamb of God, the blood or His
work of redemption; all are absent.
The all-penetrating righteousness
expressed by the Great White
Throne exposes all. The degree of
hell is determined by their works
of darkness, sin and evil. Satan is
cast into the lake of fire before the
Great White Throne Judgment be-
gins (see Revelation 20:10). Neither
the Antichrist nor the false prophet

Catholicism
Dear Editor,
While reading my October
2009 issue of your magazine
(Midnight Call), I noticed some
comments you made in regard
to the Catholic Church as part
of your cover story article
(The Exclusive Church) that
I wanted to address. I should
also point out that this is not
the first time you have made
such anti-Catholic (Church
anyway) comments.
You make mention that the
Catholic Church states that you
cannot solely rely on The Holy
Scriptures, which you clearly
believe is the only thing you
should rely on. This theology is
known as Sola Scriptura (By
Scripture Alone) and is flawed
by its own standards (re: The
Scriptures Themselves)!
If you read The Gospel Ac-
cording to John Chapter 21
verse 25, you will see that it
clearly says, Jesus did many
other things as well. If every
one of them were written down,
I suppose that even the whole
world would not have room for
the books that would be writ-
ten. This states that not every-
thing was written down (in our
beloved Bible).
If you then read one of the
Epistles from the Apostle
Paul, specifically 2 Thessalo-
nians 2:15, you will see that
he states, So then, brothers,
stand firm and hold to the
teachings we passed on to
you, whether by word of
mouth or by letter. Now
since the letters became the
Epistles of our canonized
New Testamentwhere is the
word of mouth? Do you not
see this verse as clearly speak-
ing of an oral (sacred) tradi-
tion?
I am not saying that the
Catholic Church is absolutely
correct on everything, but they
are not wrong on everything ei-
ther. I believe The Reformation
Movement (in its rebellion
against Rome) has lost the Sa-
cred Tradition and therefore
completely dismisses it in error.
In fact, they violate the scrip-
tures themselves that they are
saying they solely uphold. You
apparently seem to fit into this
category with these most recent
comments in the above refer-
enced article and others you
have made in past articles.
I would really like to know
your thoughts on this.
-J. Crowe, NJ
Answer: Either we have the full
counsel of God to man contained in
the Bible from Genesis to Revela-
tion, or we dont. That is the issue.
You asked, Where is the word of

claimed by the apostles and evan-

gelists. Today, millions of servants
of the Lord proclaim the word of
mouth, the Gospel. But whatever
we say should never be placed on
the same level as Holy Scripture.
Second Timothy 3:16 says, All
Scripture is given by inspiration of
God. That is an accomplished fact;
it is given, and we dont have to add
anything to it. Sola Scriptura, noth-
ing more, nothing less. No provi-
sion is made in Scripture to add
sacred tradition.
Youth Ministry
Dear Mr. Froese,
I returned from Iraq in 2008.
My last trip overseas ended in a
bombing, and I have been hos-
pitalized since then. I have a
fellow government worker who
brings the Midnight Call to me
every month. I share this maga-
zine with no less than 15-28
young people. One question
keeps occurring during our
meetings, namely, that with so
many people of faith respond-
ing to end times preparation,
what part will all the children,
teens and young adults play in
this? What will their involve-
ment be? How can they help?
Can they be trained? Who
cares?
The children, teens, and
young adults hear things from
their parents and other sources
(current events, TV and news-
papers, schools, churches), yet
do not feel they are included in
this preparation for end times.
I was overseas for 13 years,
and being back in the U.S., I am
older to see and understand
that this very valuable resource
is being overlooked. All this en-
ergy, where do they get it?
I have been helping to redirect
these young people to watch,
wait, and prepare for these end
times.
Maybe during a crisis, the
person you see standing next to
you joining you in prayer
might be a young adult.
-S. Ruby, TX
Answer: We do not target any spe-
cific group of people. Revelation
says, He that hath an ear, let him
hear what the Spirit sayeth unto
the churches. What the Spirit says
is clearly revealed in Scripture.
However, I must add that we are
not preparing or waiting for the
end times; we are preparing and
waiting for a person, and that is Je-
sus Christ our Lord. Here are the in-
structions: Four our conversation is
in heaven; from whence also we
look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus
Christ (Philippians 3:20). In 1
Corinthians 1:7 we read: waiting
for the coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ. First Thessalonians 1:10
reads: to wait for his Son from
heaven. Titus 2:13 reads: Looking
for that blessed hope, and the glori-
ous appearing of the great God and
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Hebrews
9:28 says: So Christ was once of-
fered to bear the sins of many; and
unto them that look for him shall
he appear the second time without
sin unto salvation.
This is a very personal and inti-
mate spiritual matter between the
Lord and myself.
Your concern for young people
is to be commended. Fortunately,
there are many ministries which
target the young people in particu-
lar. Unfortunately, the majority of
churches, denominations and min-
istries neglect the subject of
prophecy and end times. This, of
course, is to be expected. Who
wants to hear about wars, destruc-
tion, death, hell and the lake of fire?
But those who are faithful to the
Word will preach the whole Gospel
from Genesis to Revelation.
Outward Appearance
Dear Midnight Call,
First of all, I want to say may
God richly bless you. I am es-
pecially grateful and blessed by
your burden to reach lost souls
with the Truth, Jesus. I have a
few questions, and would
greatly appreciate it if you
would answer them. You proba-
bly get overloaded on ques-
tions. If you dont find the time,
its okay too; God will provide
an answer.
If Jesus says we are the
light of the world (born again
Christians), and if we are in
the world but not of it, why
is separation from the world
in outward appearance so lit-
tle taught? A light shines a
far distance.
Another question I have is
that if youre living at home,
how long and to what extent
do you obey your parents in
all things?
-H. Fehr, Ontario, Canada
Answer: The light we shine is His
light. Let you light so shine before
men, that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father
which is in Heaven (Matthew 5:16).

This light is invisible to the outward

man. It is not exhibited through a
preacher, a television evangelist or
missionary, but it is the invisible
spirit of truth and light. Think of 2
Corinthians 3:2: Ye are our epistle
written in our hearts, known and
read of all men. It comes from
within, not from without. When this
light issues from within, as a result,
the world will see your good
works.
The outward appearance can be
very deceiving. Those who are born
of His Spirit and desire to do His will
know how to carry their outward
appearance. The moment we begin
to preach on how to appear out-
wardly, we are establishing laws
and it will lead to hypocrisy to no
end.
As to the relationship between
children and their parents, when my
children are in my house, they obey
me, but when I go to their home, I
abide by their rules.
Two Comings
Dear Sir,
I have been a fan of your
magazine and especially the
answer to questions section
for a long time. I respect your
thoughtful answers, and so
I want your opinion on a pas-
sage of the Bible that I feel is
often not explained properly
in some commentaries.
The passage I speak of is
Matthew 4:36-44. This speaks
of Christs description of His
return to earth. I have always
understood it to be an ac-
count of events up to and
during the Rapture. But the
two commentaries I have
checked both have been em-
phatic in their belief that it is
not the Rapture he speaks of,
but the 2nd coming at the
end of the tribulation.
What disturbs me is that
Christ says no man will know,
only God, when this will hap-
pen, so we must be alert. This
is true, but more so with the
Rapture, which will surely be
a surprise to all, as the second
coming can be anticipated at
the end of the tribulation pe-
riod of seven years. Christ
also said that the times would
be like that of Noah, with
people living normal lives,
eating, drinking, getting mar-
ried, etc. This surely cannot
be said of those coming out of
the seven years of the An-
tichrists rule, and the horrors
that will produce.
My only conclusion is that it
is possible, as in so many places
in the Bible, the passage speaks
of not one but the two events
combined. I would surely ap-
preciate your understanding of
all this, as you have a great way
of getting to the truth of so
many difficult passages.
Thanks.
-N. Watson, VA
Answer: Our Lords prophecy in
Matthew 24 includes the dispensa-
tion of the Church, the Great Tribu-
lation, and the end. Although verses
36-44 point to the Rapture, they are
also applicable to the Great Tribula-
tion. There will be great judgment
upon planet Earth, yet people will
live normal lives. As a matter of fact,
I believe there will be great pros-
perity, security and freedom. This is
particularly evident from the de-
scription of the end of the tribula-
tion, such as in Revelation 18:3 and
9. They were living rather well, but
in the very end, they will be cata-
strophically disappointed. I agree
with your conclusion, The passage
speaks of not one, but the two
events combined.
Satan in Heaven?
Dear Mr. Froese,
I didnt expect to be writ-
ing again so soon, but after
having read one of the letters
to the Editor in the Septem-
ber 2009 issue of Midnight
Call, I have questions about
Satan. I never totally under-
stood. I am referring to the
letter titled Satan Cast Out
on page 43. One question is,
how can Satan stand before
Gods thronewhich obvi-
ously is in heavenwhere he
accuses the believers night
and day (Revelation 12:10)
and Jesus intercedes for us?
First, God cannot have any
sin in heaven, neither can he
look upon any sin. Satan,
who is total sin according to
Scripture, cannot be looked
upon by God, so how can he
stand before Gods throne
and not be cast out?
Second question: I always
believed according to Scrip-
ture, that Satan and his fol-
lowers (fallen angels) were
cast down to earth soon after
the earth was created and be-
fore he tempted Eve in the
Garden of Eden. My under-
standing is that it was Satan
DECEMBER 2009 45

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

who tempted Eve through the
serpent. If not Satan, then
who? Who tempted Cain to
kill Abel, etc. down through
the ages? Obviously, Satan
was on the earth when Jesus
was on the earth, because Je-
sus talked to him directly on
many occasions, especially
during the 40 days in the
wilderness when Jesus told
him to get behind me, Sa-
tan. Also, one of the tempta-
tions of Satan was to bow
before him and he would give
you all the kingdoms of this
world (which apparently he
was in control of). Also, an-
other time Jesus told His dis-
ciples that Satan desires to
sift you like wheat.
So how can Satan be on the
earth with all his evil schemes
and still be in heaven accus-
ing the saints? Does he have
the same properties as God
that he can be in all places at
all times? I doubt that, since
he will be or has been cast out
of heaven, so he cant be both
there and on the earth. Are
there two casting out of
heaven events in Scripture,
one past and one future at the
Great Tribulation? That seems
like the more logical explana-
tion. Apparently, Satan was on
the earth and then got back
into heaven (maybe after Je-
sus ascended to heaven), and
there began his accusing the
saints of sin before God. Is it
possible that when Jesus went
back to heaven in the ascen-
sion and left His followers to
carry on His work here on
earth, that Satan also went
back to heaven and left his
followers (fallen angels) to
carry on his work, and then
began accusing the saints of
God that believed in Jesus?
I hope youve gotten a
sense of where Im coming
from. I guess I have to boil
everything down to a simple
question: Where has Satan
been since he fell out of grace
with God his Creator and
tried to take over heaven with
1/3 of the angels, and where
is he now? Scripture is very
plain about his future (bot-
tomless pit).
Would appreciate your in-
put on this letter. Hopefully
you can shed some light on
this subject. Thanks again.
-D. Boose, PA
Answer: According to Job 1:6, Sa-
tan is in the presence of God in
heaven. This is further confirmed in
Zechariahs fourth night vision in
chapter 3: Satan is standing at the
right hand of Joshua the high
priest before the Lord. But he is also
on earth, which is clearly docu-
mented in Matthew 4.
Why is he before Gods throne?
Because he has a legal right. The
Bible says, He who sins is of the
devil. Believers, those who have
broken through to a living faith and
are born again of the Spirit of God,
are the ones Satan accuses before
God day and night, and thats the
reason why we need a lawyer, an
advocate, who is Jesus our Lord.
When the Church is raptured, Sa-
tan loses his legal right to the
saints because they have now been
perfected. Then for the first time,
Satan can do as he pleases on
planet Earth. The light of the world
has been taken out, and darkness
covers the earth. Revelation 12:12
summarizes this event: Therefore
rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that
dwell in them. Woe to the inhab-
iters of the earth and of the sea! for
the devil is come down unto you,
having great wrath, because he
knoweth that he hath but a short
time.

An exquisite reproduction of a circa-1850 large,
single-volume collection of Flavius Josephus'
complete literary works.
A priest, scholar, and warrior, this
Jewish historian was born just a
few years after the death of Jesus
Christ. Best known for his works
The Antiquities of the Jews and
The Jewish Wars, Josephus is an
oft-cited source for students of
biblical chronology and
history.
This classic translation by
WilliamWhiston is a
treasure of
information and
beautifully detailed
artwork from the historic
Tallis publishing family,
best known for their
illustrated maps of the
world with detailed
vignettes. Their work is highly
prized and collected, and the
caliber of this quality is shown in
each of the over 60 full-page
steel engravings featuring the
work of the most skilled artisans of
the time. Each illustration is framed
with an ornate and highly detailed
border, each unique and a testament
to the dilligence and quality of
craftsmanship that became a signature
of the Tallis company.
