Standard: Concept 2: Structure of Government PO 1. Discuss the three branches of state and national government: a. Executive b. Legislative c. Judicial Objective (Explicit): For students to be able to differentiate between the legislative, judicial, and executive branches of government Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex): 1. Differentiate between the three branches of government 2. Identify the differences between the three branches of the government 3. Recall the differences and features between the three branches of the government Evidence of Mastery (Measurable, include variety of methods of checking for understanding): Mastery will be shown when a student has successfully completed their branches of the government fact note sheet with correct information about the branches of the government Key vocabulary: Legislative: made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate- makes laws Judicial: enforces the laws (judges) Supreme Court Executive: responsible for the daily activities of the country- the president, vice president, and cabinet Checks and Balances: all three branches of the government have the same power but in different ways so that no one branch of government has all of the power Branch: a section Government: a group of people that run something (country, state, city, etc.) Law: a rule that must be obeyed Judge: a person that enforces rules and punishes a person if they break them Materials: 1. Branches of the government fact sheets 2. Government branches fact sort 3. Pencils

Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life) Discuss how the Constitution created the 3 branches of government so that no one branch would have all of the power. Why do you think it is unfair if only 1 person has all of the power? , Why is it a good idea for the government to share power?

Introduce concept of checks and balances Teacher Will: Introduce the branches of the government (judicial, legislative, executive) Student Will: Engage in discussion about the three branches of the government and respond to questions posed by the teacher Student Will: Provide information from provided information sheets to add to class discussion and categorization of information on the board Student Will: Use informational materials provided to discover the 3 branches of the government and write at least 3 facts into each category for each branch of the government

Instructional Input Guided Practice

Teacher Will: Guide a discussion and write one fact for each branch on the board provided by the student

Teacher Will: Independent Practice Monitor student work, answer questions as needed

Closure/Lesson Summary: As a closing of the days lesson, students will turn to a partner and tell them what the three branches of the government are
