FOREWORD This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Wrought Steel Products Sectional Committee had been approved by Metallurgical Engineering Division Council. This standard was first published in 1962 and subsequently revised in 1982. While reviewing the standard in the light of experiences gained during these years, the Committee decided to revise it to bring it in line with the present practices being followed by the Indian industry. In this revision, the following changes have been made: a) Number of grades of steel plates for pressure vessels used at moderate and low temperature have been reduced to three by deleting Grade 4. b) Chemical composition and mechanical properties have been modified. c) Requirements of heat treatment has been modified and provision of re-heat treatment has been included for material which fails to meet the requirement of mechanical properties in initial testing. d) Dimensional tolerances have been modified. In the preparation of this standard, necessary assistance has been derived from the following overseas standards: BS 1501 (Part 1) : 1980 Steels for fired and unfired pressure vessel plates: Part 1 Carbon and carbon manganese steels, issued by the British Standards Institution (BSI). ASTM A 516-1984 Specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel for moderate and lower temperature services, issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This edition 3.1 incorporates Amendment No. 1 (October 1997). Side bar indicates modification of the text as the result of incorporation of the amendment. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

The acceptance standard shall be specified by the purchaser. 13 RUST PROTECTION After inspection and approval, if so desired by the purchaser, each plate shall be painted with one coat of boiler linseed oil or a suitable rust preventive material, as agreed to between the supplier and the purchaser. 14 MARKING 14.1 For plates 6 mm and over in thickness, the name or trade mark of the manufacturer, cast number, grade and plate number shall be legibly steel die stamped on each finished plate at 150 mm from one of the transverse edges at the middle. 14.2 For plates under 6 mm in thickness, the marking specified in 14.1 shall be legibly stenciled instead of stamping. 14.3 BIS Certification Marking The material may also be marked with the Standard Mark. 14.3.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
