Plate on Viscoelastic Foundation under a Moving Load By SATYANARAYANMANDAL 1)

Summary- In this note the deflection of a simply supported rectangular elastic plate on viscoelastic foundation has been obtained due to a moving load. Introduction
This note concerns with the deflection of an elastic plate on visco-elastic foundation. Two different types of foundations have been considered. In the first case [1] 2) the differential operator B has been taken as linear of the form B-as +a2 6/6t where aj and a2 are material constants. The second case deals with visco-elastic foundation of the Pasternak type. In addition to the Winkler hypothesis, where at each point the pressurep is directly proportional to the deflection w, Pasternak assumes the existence of shear interactions between the spring elements in the foundation. This is done by connecting the ends of the springs to a plate consisting of incompressible vertical elements, which deforms only by transverse shear and a second foundation constant, the 'Shear modulus' G is considered. Since the movement of the foundation is very slow, the inertia terms are neglected. The differential equation of a laterally loaded thin elastic plate resting on a viscoelastic Pasternak-foundation is given by [2],

D V * w - # ~ t V2 w + q ~ + c w = q
where/~ is a viscosity coefficient, r/visco-compressibility coefficient. In both the cases, a normal load has been applied and it moves with a constant velocity along the line parallel to one edge of the plate. The property of the Dirac delta function play an important role in solving the problem. It has been found very helpful to use Laplace transform.

Method of solution
Taking the x y-plane as the middle plane of the plate [3] of cross-section a x b, let us suppose that the load is moving with a constant velocity v along the line Y=Yo and let it be represented by

q(x, y, t) = P ~(x - v t) 6(y - Yo)

where P is a constant. We assume that the deflection of the plate w is of the form
