t value
The time-current characteristic curves usually only provide data down to 10 milliseconds. For blow
time less than 8-10 msec (which is cycle oI 50Hz or 60Hz AC current), the actual blow time will
be signiIicantly aIIected by the phase angle at which the current is switched on. I
t is a more
meaningIul value to represent the blowing characteristic oI a Iuse at such a short blow time. It is a
value proportional to the let-through energy (the integral oI square oI current against time, with unit
A
sec) oI a Iuse beIore it blows at high overload current with blow time less than 8-10ms.

The I
t value oI a Iuse should be greater than that oI a surge current iI the Iuse is required to
withstand the surge. The greater the I
t value, the better the Iuse surge resistance will be. However,
unnecessarily great I
t value may lead to saIety problem iI the Iuse Iails to clear a high Iault current
Iast enough to avoid causing hazardous situation or damage to other more delicate components. A
Iuse chosen should have I
t value between the desired surge resistance and maximum allowable Iault
current I
t value.

4. Safety approvaIs
Fuse is a saIety protection component. Many countries require Iuses to be approved by speciIied saIety
agencies. The most popularly accepted saIety approval agencies are : Underwriters' Laboratories (UL) oI
U.S.A.; Canadian Standards Association (CSA) oI Canada; Swedish Institute oI Testing and Approvals
oI Electrical Equipment (SEMKO) oI Sweden and VDE oI Germany. UL and CSA have the same
requirements which are stipulated in harmonized standards. The European approvals, like Semko and
VDE basically Iollow the same relevant IEC standards.
North America - UL, CSA
The harmonized standards oI UL and CSA Ior miniature and micro Iuses are UL 248-1 and -14 (or
CSA-C22.2 No. 248.1 and No. 248.14). Their Iusing characteristic requirements are summarized at
the table below.

Europe - SEMKO, VDE
The European approvals Iollow the standards issued by International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC). The standard Ior miniature Iuses is IEC127-2. There are diIIerent standard sheets in this
standard Ior diIIerent Iuse types. The Iusing characteristic requirements oI two oI the standard
sheets are summarized at the table below Ior comparison with that oI UL/CSA.

Note : The specification of UL/CSA and IEC127-2 stipulated above is just a brief representation. The
corresponding standards should be referred for the exact details.

5. Mounting methods
Depending on the Iuse construction and other installation constrains or requirements, Iuses can be
installed Ior use by diIIerent mounting methods.
Euse construction Cartridge Leaded SMD
Mounting methods - Euse clip
- Euse holder
- Direct soldering
- Crimping
- Surface mount
Cartridge Iuses installed in Iuse clips or Iuse holders oIIer the advantage oI easy replacement but the
material and installation cost will be higher. The leaded Iuses can be directly inserted into printed circuit
board and soldered by automated soldering processes to reduce assembly labor cost. Crimping
connection allows leaded Iuses to be installed in some areas where other mounting methods will not be
Ieasible. SMD Iuses are specially designed Ior SMD assembly and soldering processes, usually oI
smaller size comparing with cartridge and leaded Iuses.
6. Size
There are two most popular sizes oI miniature Iuses - 5mm diameter x 20mm length and 1/4" diameter x
1-1/4" length. Appropriate size should be selected to match the Iuse clips/holders or the space available.
II only limited space is available, micro Iuse can be considered.
7. Derating characteristic
Fuse is a thermal sensitive device. The ambient temperature will aIIect heat transIer Irom the Iuse to the
surrounding and hence the current carrying capacity oI the Iuse. The nominal amperage rating oI a Iuse is
usually established at ambient temperature oI 25C. The higher the ambient temperature, the lower the
current carrying capacity will be. Appropriate allowance should be given when deciding the amperage
rating oI a Iuse used at temperature signiIicantly higher or lower than 25C. Fuses oI diIIerent
constructions and materials may be aIIected diIIerently by the ambient temperature. The typical
relationship oI ambient temperature and current carrying capacity is illustrated below.
