This will give you an educated and insightful understanding of this performance-based art form. Course Objectives when you have completed this course you will be able to:

Distinguish and differentiate the characteristics of theatre from other art forms. Describe the major components of a theatrical event.. Describe the functions of various theatre personnel. Define specific terms relating to the study of theatre. List and describe the parts of a play. Describe the different forms of drama. Define the different parts of plot. Critique plays. Describe the characteristics of theatre in the different periods of history. Develop an appreciation for theatre as an art form and a reflection of society.

Texts We will read 4 plays this semester. They are listed below. All 4 of them are available in the University Bookstore at very reasonable prices. 3 of the play scripts are also available free of charge from the online sources listed below. The fourth play, FENCES is not available online and must be purchased. I dont care where your scripts come from, but you must read the following plays: Oedipus Rex (Oedipus the King) by Sophocles http://www.ancient-mythology.com/greek/oedipus_rex.php Hamlet by Shakespeare http://shakespeare.mit.edu/hamlet/index.html A Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen http://www.gutenberg.org/files/2542/2542-h/2542-h.htm Fences by August Wilson The lectures for the class will make up the additional text and are posted on CANVAS.
