VI. Reading Comprehension (8 points): Read the text below and then answer the comprehension questions on the next page. " Some of the most significant events in recent decades would never have happened without one apparently harmless invention: air conditioning. Without it, says Stan Cox, author of his book Losing Our Cool, History would have been different. Cox reveals that just about every modern trend can be explained, at least in part, by air conditioners. # North American society is addicted to air conditioning, and the effects of this are far-reaching. In the extremely hot states in the Sun Belt of the United States, such as Arizona, Nevada, and Texas, it is no exaggeration to say that air conditioners made life possible. It is inconceivable that there would be a Florida of 18.5 million people today without air conditioning, says historian Gary Mormino in Losing Our Cool. After the Second World War, large numbers of Americans moved from cold northern states. This demographic shift exactly mirrored the increased use of air conditioners across the country. Air conditioning was essential to the development of the Sun Belt, says Mormino. It was surely the most significant factor. $ This is not the only effect that air conditioning has had. There appears to be a link between temperature and birth patterns. Demographic studies in the States have shown that for every 10 degrees that the average monthly temperature rises, conception rates decline by up to 10 percent. Therefore, it seems that the hotter it gets, the less interested people are in sex. However, since the uncontrolled use of air conditioning, this trend has been flattened, which Cox believes demonstrates the power that a human invention like air conditioning has to influence the biological patterns of life. What is more, he explains, cool temperatures enhance the quality of sperm, further enabling fertility. Air conditioning also has other physical effects. It can explain why people feel tired in the morning. A 2006 Japanese study showed longterm exposure to air conditioning can delay our daily dose of stimulating hormones until 10 a.m. or later. This is due to the fact that air conditioners are such excellent sleep aids that they may affect the biological rhythms that awaken and energize us. Finally, a Danish study found that there may be a link between temperature and weight because people tend to eat more when it is cooler. % If predictions about climate change are correct, air conditioning could become even more crucial. Forty years from now, researchers predict the earth will experience 17 to 23 percent more hot weather annually. As a result, especially taking population growth into account, demand for cooling systems will rise by 65 to 72 percent. It is a surprising cycle. As it gets hotter, Cox explains, we will become more dependent on air conditioning, which will feed the heating of the planet, and create even more demand for air conditioning. Where is it going to stop?
