Pickleball
by Linda Jarrett
Drop by the gymnasium at St. Elizabeth of Hungary on Mondays and there will be the thwock of paddles hitting balls, tennis shoes squeaking over the floor, and shrieks of joy or the agony of defeat. This is pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the country according to Kathy Westerbeck, ambassador for the U.S.A. Pickleball Association. The game came about in the summer of 1965 when Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington State, and businessman Bill Bell returned to

Pritchards home on Bainbridge Island to find their families sitting around with nothing to do, according to the official pickleball website, www.usapa. org. The property had an old badminton court so they looked for some badminton equipment, but couldnt find a full set of rackets. They improvised, cutting shafts of the damaged rackets and found a perforated plastic ball. The rackets didnt work very well, so the dads created four wood paddles, similar to the wood paddles used in the game cont. p. 10

Pickleball Growing In Popularity from page 9

today. They invited a friend, Barney McCallum, to participate and created rules, relying heavily on badminton. The Pritchards had a Cocker Spaniel named Pickles, and whenever a ball would come his way, he would take the ball and run off with it. It was Pickles ball, and that is how the game got its name. Westerbeck, the ambassador for the U.S.A. Pickleball Association, was at St. Elizabeths last Monday watching a happy group of seniors enjoying the game. Pickleball is similar to tennis, but is played on a smaller court with the net lowered to 34 inches in the center. Its been around for a long time, but has not been popular in St. Louis because nobody organized it, she said. We played in Kansas City and when we moved here, I was shocked that no one here had organized it. The Salvation Army Citadel was playing on Saturday nights and that was it. I started an email with 12 names and I now have 100. Mary Chubb, a volunteer with the SAJE Ministry, a coalition formed by seniors at Advent Episcopal Church, St. Justin Martyr and St. Elizabeth of Hungary, said that she was approached by Beverly Simmermann, who was in a Zumba class. She had played pickleball and suggested it for people who were wanting to do something indoors in the winter when they couldnt play golf, Chubb said. They brought it before the SAJE Council and pickleball began at St. Elizabeths the first Monday in November. During the games, instructor Ruby Moss walked around giving hints to players. Ive played tennis, racquetball and badminton, she said. I got interested when I saw it in the Senior Olympics and figured it was another racket and another ball. You have a lot of people who are extennis players who still want to play, and its easier on the body than tennis. Westerbeck added that the learning curve is smaller. You can play a few times and youre good to go, especially if youve played tennis or racquetball, but

Linda Silman of Kirkwood stretches to make a return during a Monday pickleball match held on one of two courts at St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Crestwood. photo by Diana Linsley Chubb told him he needed to warm up before playing. Maybe its age? he laughed. Crestwood resident Pam Howard, an ex-tennis player, has been playing pickleball for three months and loves it. Its a great activity, she said. You meet a lot of nice new people, get good exercise and since its indoors, we can play in winter or summer. Its a good sport for seniors to play. Kirkwood resident Jill Smith started playing this year and said shes having a ball. Were all retired or semi-retired and thought wed give it a try, she said. For being a newcomer, this is the most welcoming. People give you the latitude of having no experience, and you dont have to come every time. Its purely recreational and competitive. In addition to the Salvation Army Citadel, 824 Union Road, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary, 1420 Sappington Road, pickleball is starting at the Sunset Hills Community Center, 3915 S. Lindbergh Blvd., and Riverchase Recreation Center, 990 Horan Drive in Fenton. For information on sessions and prices at all locations, contact Westerbeck at 636-326-1175 or 816-519-2604, or email kathyw@cim-group.com.

Pickleball instructor Ruby Moss gives Ray Weis of Sunset Hills a few pointers. photo by Diana Linsley we have all levels, she said. South County resident Nancy Kaalberg started playing pickleball two months ago. I had taught it 10 years ago in an alternative high school, she said. I knew it was a lot of fun and thought this is something I need to do for myself, so I came here. Its a great sport very addicting and a particularly good sport for seniors. Ray Weis of Sunset Hills had his leg on a bench stretching out a muscle. This is my fourth time over here, he said. I feel good except when I pull a muscle.

ST. LOUIS HELP: Providing Medical Equipment ... For Free

Agency accepts donations of home medical equipment for free loan to those in need
by Jaime Mowers
Sarah Beaman needed a hospital bed at home following her knee replacement last year, but her insurance refused to cover it. She also needed some other medical equipment to make getting around the house a little easier, but those items werent covered either. Thanks to a nonprofit organization called St. Louis HELP (Health Equipment Lending Program) she got everything she needed and at no cost. I have great insurance that helped with the surgery, but I live in a two-story home and didnt have some of the things that would really help, said Beaman, who learned of St. Louis HELP when she was looking to donate medical equipment after her mother passed away. It would have cost me $62 a day for a bed for six weeks, but with St. Louis HELP I just borrowed it for the time I needed it and then took it back. It worked out great. Beaman, who is now a volunteer with the organization, is just one of thousands of people who have benefitted from St. Louis HELP, which collects new or gently used medical equipment and leases it to those who need it for free. Wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, crutches, hospital beds, gait belts, van lifts, pediatric wheelchairs and equipment, portable toilets and more are at the ready. All people have to do is fill out a wavier and they can borrow covering items for the shower, but thats one of the most dangerous places in the house for someone with mobility issues. Our shower equipment is whats highest in demand. Hospital beds are also high on the list. We have at least six hospital beds go out per week, she said. The beauty of St. Louis HELP is that people can borrow what they need and then return it when theyre finished, Singer said. The organization often has equipment people arent even aware of that can help them. People might come in for one thing and leave with four or five things, she said, noting people also often need two pieces of the same equipment one at their house and one at a relatives house, for example. None of what St. Louis HELP does would be possible without the generous monetary and medical equipment donations from individuals and corporations, Singer said. The majority of donations are collected during two weekend equipment drives during spring and fall. The spring drive has been scheduled for May 4 and 5. St. Louis HELP puts out 12 U-Haul trucks at Walgreens stores and other locations throughout the greater St. Louis area to collect equipment during the weekend drives. The generosity of the St. Louis community is amazing, Singer said. And the organization could not exist without its 60 volunteers who contributed more than 2,000 hours to St. Louis HELP last year, she added.

Actual Spectrum Residents

Beaman enjoys volunteering with St. Louis HELP and Hospice. With the volunteer work I do, I see both sides, she said. I see patients or their family members in need of something that they cant get with their insurance, Medicare or Medicaid and St. Louis HELP can get it for them. Then theres the opposite sometimes after someone has passed away the family is looking for a place to take moms wheelchair or hospital bed. Beaman likes seeing someones equipment help others. Its about making life easier so people can be whole, she said. Maybe somebody wants to walk down their driveway to the mailbox but they cant, and you give them a walker and then they can. Behind The Scenes St. Louis HELP has a lot going on behind the scenes, too. For every $1.3 million of medical equipment that goes out the front door, $900,000 is going out the back door. The organization receives several donations that it cannot lease or distribute those that require a physicians prescription and those items are donated to charities that then distribute the supplies to developing nations and other countries around the world. Things from here actually are getting everywhere, Singer said. If we cant use it well get it to someone who can. St. Louis HELP is also big on recycling. Every year were diverting literally tons of medical equipment from going into landfills, she said, noting the organization breaks down power wheelchairs and recycles the batteries.

Laura Singer, founder of St. Louis HELP (Health Equipment Lending Program), goes over medical equipment inventory at the agencys newly-expanded warehouse in Olivette. photo by Diana Linsley the equipment for as long as they need without paying anything. Power chairs are the only item that require a physicians prescription. People often think the set up is too good to be true, but thats exactly how it works, explained Laura Singer, who founded St. Louis HELP in 2008. The organization has since grown more than Singer ever imagined. In August 2008, she was thrilled to have collected 60 items and distributed 23 of them. Fast forward to 2013 and St. Louis HELP collected more than 10,000 items and distributed over $1.3 million in medical equipment to nearly 2,500 people. Its been amazing, Singer said, noting the nonprofit recently expanded its warehouse in Olivette to 5,000 square feet. There is a huge need in the community. St. Louis HELP provides a safety net for those who are uninsured, underinsured, or those who have insurance but lack coverage for certain medical equipment. It allows people to stay safe and in their homes longer, and it also helps ease the stress on caregivers, Singer said. Even for those who have insurance, many of these items are not covered. In 2004/2005, Medicare/Medicaid stopped

Nothing goes to waste at St. Louis HELP where the working parts of nonfunctional equipment are taken off and used to repair other pieces of equipment or wooden crutches are sent to a tree chipping company to be broken down. Keeping Seniors Vital At Shepherds Center

Interfaith group attracts seniors with wide variety of programs
by David Baugher
Executive Director Gayle McHenry has a simple message for those wondering what Shepherds Center of Webster/Kirkwood is all about. All of our programs and services are aimed at helping seniors stay vital, engaged and independent, she said. Now, as the interfaith non-profit marks its 16th year, it is able to accomplish that mission better than ever with a wide variety of programs, initiatives and services geared toward those 55 and older. Perhaps the best-known aspect of the center is Adventures in Learning, a series of adult education classes that is offered on a quarterly basis covering everything from tai chi to art history. Topics for this year include sessions on Cuban culture, national parks, the Civil War and writing ones own life history. I think they enjoy the fellowship, said McHenry. They get to meet new people or get reacquainted with old friends. They like just gathering together for social conversation with their peers. Its a very accepting, warm, welcoming atmosphere. Bill German, a longtime board member and past chair of the group agrees. He said it is about more than just the content of each course. We always do breakfast before classes start, and I often think that, not the breakfast itself, but the whole idea of sitting at a table with someone outside your immediate household is just a very important thing to people, particularly to those who are restricted in their ability to get out and about, said German, a Glendale resident. It has always been my contention that the breakfast is as important as the classes themselves. McHenry said the classes, which serve about 600, are so popular that even major weather events cant dampen the enthusiasm. In fact, 10 people showed up today even though Jane Luckhaupt and Laura Inman share a laugh during a chair yoga program at Harrison Avenue Missionary Baptist Church. The program is part of a series of classes offered by Shepherds Center. photo by Diana Linsley

we were cancelled, she said as St. Louis dug out from a foot of snow. They were ready to get out and have some fun. In addition to the West Lockwood location, smaller versions of the class series are available at the Harrison Avenue Missionary Baptist Church in Kirkwood and at Douglass Manor in Webster Groves. We cater to what the seniors want, McHenry said. Whats really cool is that Adventures in Learning is designed by and for the seniors. They recruit the speakers. They let us know what they like, what they dont like. It really is self-fulfilling. They like something, we re-engage it. Moreover, not everything happens indoors. The center also features day trips four-to-six times annually to sites around the area such as Powell Hall or the Touhill Performing Arts Center. The Harrison Avenue group also does regular field trips to locations ranging from the Missouri History Museum to Laumeier Sculpture Park.

McHenry said that the outings can be important for seniors who may not be using their cars as much as in the past. It allows them to continue their interests, even when they are not driving that far anymore, she said. It enables them to do the things they love with a group. Of course, seniors also need transportation for more mundane matters such as medical, dental and therapy appointments. Shepherds Center also has that covered. About 100 volunteer drivers help take local seniors where they need to go, donating their time and gas for the purpose. About 300 older adults use the service. Its good for the seniors health, McHenry said. Its good for the community because the more options people have, the more likely they are to give up driving when they need to. German thinks that the helping hand from the volunteer drivers is among the most important things cont. p. 16

the center does. Thats something that is very much needed in our community because when you lose the ability to drive and you are in the suburbs trying to stay in your own home, getting to a medical appointment becomes a big problem, he said. For those seniors staying in, Shepherds Center also helps out around the house. Volunteers take care of minor home repair and upkeep issues such as paint touchups, hard-toreach light bulbs that need changing or a leaky faucet that requires attention. In the spring and the fall, we get youth groups and scout groups to help seniors rake and get their yards in shape for the fall and summer, McHenry added, noting that the centers yard cleanup program has attracted participants from second grade through high school. Its really helpful because the kids get to serve. Their parents get to help out and the seniors get to connect with the kids. There is even a resource center run Monday through Thursday. We have volunteers who answer phones and they help people connect with whatever services they need, whether it is something we offer or something in the community, McHenry said. There are 10-12 volunteers we train specifically to be very resourceful. Its a peer-to-peer thing so many seniors are answering the phone. Theyve gone through some of these changes and know what it is like. There is no fee for the home repair or yard services which are available to those 55 and older living in Webster, Kirkwood and Crestwood. The trips and Adventures in Learning classes have varying costs. The experience seems worth it. I had a lady a couple of weeks ago who said when I come to Shepherds Center, I just feel so alive, McHenry said. They are able to get out, get active and reconnect.

Carl and Irene Spinner of Crestwood celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on Friday, Dec. 13. Carl, age 91, said he and Irene, age 97, had a big celebration. I kissed her good night, he quipped, noting that in the 72 years theyve been married theyve only had one argument and its still going on. On a serious note, Carl said, Weve been blessed. The good Lord has been good to us. The couple has four children, eight grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.
