Event: Annual Irish Feis and Festival
Admission: $10 per person; children under 16 free as long as they are accompanied by an adult
Time/Location: 9am-6pm; south campus Lacrosse fields
Description: The Irish Studies Program at Hofstra is proud to host and to support the Nassau County
Ancient Order of Hibernians in presenting its annual Irish Feis and Festival. The Feis is a
celebration of Irish culture and history. The day features traditional dance and piping
competitions, a marketplace, plus Irish language and Gaelic sports workshops.

Event: Public Talk: The Lessons My Father Taught Me
Time/Location: 4:30-6pm, Cultural Center Theater (directly across from Axinn Library entrance))
Description: Irish native and locally-based poet John Brennan will read and reflect upon selected
works related to spirituality, family, and exploring ones place in the world. Books
available for purchase and signing after the talk.


Date: Thursday, October 30, 2014
Event: Reel Ireland Film Series and LGBT Month: Breakfast on Pluto
Time/Location: 6pm-8pm, 246 East Wing Axinn Library (2
nd
Floor of the Axinn Library)
Description: Directed by Neil Jordan, based on the Patrick McCabe novel, and starring Cillian Murphy
and Stephen Rea. The film focuses upon the life journey of a trans woman and explores
the relationship between identity, violence, and exclusion. Discussion to be facilitated by
Professors Maggie Burke and Greg Maney.

Event: Symposium: The Burial at Thebes
Time/Location: 11:15am-12:45pm, Black Box Theater, New Academic Building (south campus)
Description: Irish Studies Program Co-Director and noted literary scholar will discuss Nobel poet
laureate Seamus Heaneys adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone. The Burial at Thebes was
commissioned to celebrate the centenary of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The tragedy is
used to reflect and to comment upon recent wars, loyalties, and the power of the state.

Event: Performances of The Burial at Thebes

Description: Directed by Cindy Rosenthal, music by Art Solari, choreography by Stormy
Brandenberger, and starring Hofstra drama students, The Burial at Thebes is Seamus
Heaneys taut, accessible and timeless version of Sophocles Antigone. Antigone is hailed
as one of the most enduring texts in the western canon, and Heaneys version has been
cheered as eerily relevant and the right story to be telling now.

Event: Solace: Readings by Belinda McKeon

Description: The Irish novelist and playwright will read from her multi-award winning book, Solace
which uses contemporary Ireland as a backdrop to explore issues of loss and connection.
