Brian Dunnum Career Paper 12/3/2013 When I grow up, I want to work as a Public Relations Director for a professional

sports team or a sales manager within a sports team. These jobs have many responsibilities. From being the person directing all of the press conferences to helping in community outreach programs (Recruiting and Hiring Advice). I want to be able to take charge of a hectic environment such as a press conference. I also want to be part of something bigger than just sports by helping the community around our team. The Public Relations Director also has many jobs during game day such as being in charge of press passes and a good spokesman for that particular team. The sales manger has many responsibilities with the marketing side. During game days, I want to be the guy behind the scenes. In this speech I will talk about the positions, but with the non-sports side. In this survey I learned about the many themes I have. Of those themes I learned what themes I am strong at. In this survey, it showed my social theme was my dominant theme. I would totally agree with this survey in this sense. Through my past experiences with my many clubs in high school, I can tell you that being connected the members in my clubs was my strong suit. My social theme score was pretty high, but it wasnt the only theme that was high. I also scored a pretty high score in enterprising. In the past I have taken some public speaking classes, I can tell you that I did much better with persuasive speeches. I was also very surprised with this score, mainly because enterprising parallels with marketing. I had never thought of me as a marketer or a marketing major. My third highest theme was

conventional. This theme was a complete surprise. The skills involved with this theme are nowhere near what I had thought I had as skills. Conventional says the skills involved were data analysis and finances. I still disagree that this is my third highest theme. I do not like to analyze data and I cannot pay attention to detail for financing. One of the main things that caught my attention was my score on the workstyle. It showed that I preferred to work as a team. Actually, my score on work style was off the charts for working on a team. I completely agree. It also said I can learn new skills through hands on experiences. I completely agree with this as I only learn through hands on and have trouble with lectures. As I look at my top five interest areas I can say I fully agree with my interest areas. My top interest area is management. Throughout my life I feel like I have been a good leader. In High school I was a president of many clubs and I really enjoyed that, so you could say I am interested in management. My second interest area was public speaking. I absolutely love teaching people new topics as well as persuade them into trying new things. My third interest area was sports. I am currently towards the goal of obtaining a job that field, so you can I am interested. My fourth interest area was education. Both my parents are teachers, so that explains that. As I read through these jobs, I want to learn more about being a nursing home administrator. I feel like I have the compassion for the job as well as the leadership to run the nursing home. I also do not know a lot about this job, as I have not spent much time around nursing homes. In the survey it says that I should pursue a health services administrative major. I also would like to know more about

this, considering I would no idea where to begin to look for this major within a school. Through my research I have found numerous websites regarding jobs in my desired fields. In college I am double majoring in Public Relations and Marketing. I am a double major to give me a number of options. With my Marketing degree I hope to possibly obtain a job in sales. With that I intend to work my way up to a sales manger position. A sales manager has many duties. The duties include Meeting Sales Goals, Negotiation, Selling to Customer Needs, Motivation for Sales, Sales Planning, Building Relationships, Coaching, Managing Processes, Market Knowledge, Developing Budgets, and staffing. (Americas Job Exchange) Throughout my career I feel I have been very motivated to finish goals on time, especially schoolwork and projects. Making these goals bigger should be no problem for me. Negotiation is one of my dominant traits. I have been involved in many activities in my life that required me to do so. As for fulfilling customer needs, I feel I will need to learn what my product is and why the customers need it. With that being said I have acquired some very valuable learning skills throughout my schooling career. By being a manager I have to have motivating skills as well as coaching skills. In my time in High School I was in three sports for all four years. I believe in that time I learned some teamwork skills, coaching skills, and motivating skills. As I researched this job I figured out a Sales Manager makes a pretty hefty salary. I am not saying I want this job because of the, because I did. Some websites have said the median salary is about $140,792. I know I would have to work my way up but I believe it would pay off in the long run (Best Jobs in America).

Public relations specialists draft press releases and contact people in the media who might print or broadcast their material. Many radio or television special reports, newspaper stories, and magazine articles start at the desks of public relations specialists (Americas Job Exchange). For example, a press release might describe a public issue, such as health, energy, or the environment, and what an organization does to advance that issue. In addition to publication through traditional media outlets, releases are increasingly being sent through the Web and social media (What Public Relations Managers and Specialists Do). As I read this job description, it only makes me excited to pursue a job such as this. I believe my strongest trait is my ability to communicate interpersonally. I also love informing the general public about certain events and making sure they attend. As well as informing the public about events it would be nice to inform them about issues. As I look at these possible career directions I have the main goal of working within this sports industry, but with the same jobs, of course. For this paper I contacted an alumnus who is currently working within the sports marketing industry. The alumnus is currently employed with VIP Sports Marketing. VIP Sports Marketing is known for putting on events around major events such as The Masters, The Final Four, The Super Bowl, and The World Series. Doug Gole, my contact, has the job description including building relationships, call companies, and sell tickets to people who want to build relationships at major sporting events. I believe this job would work for me considering it would use my public relations skills as well as my sales/marketing skills. As I interviewed Doug about his current job I also asked

about his past jobs. He described his former jobs and the reasons he left. He obtained a job within the Milwaukee Wave soccer club as a ticket salesman. I can also see myself in this job because it is considered a sales job. He was also involved in the ticket sales with the Milwaukee Brewers Club. I was very excited as soon as I heard this considering this would be my ideal starting job, mainly because I could work my way up from that position. As he talked about his past positions he then described his current position and how he obtained it. It started when he saw the position. He really wanted to stay with sports and he knew he had very good interpersonal skills. He always thought of sports as a hobby and it was a dream come true when he was able to work within the sports industry. I was moved by this answer considering this is what is driving me towards the sports industry. As I felt like I had some things in common with this alumnus I began to ask about his college career. He mentioned that he was a History major and he was involved in Greek life. He learned a lot from Carthage including how to organize his thoughts as well as write quality papers. He always considering switching majors but still managed to have success with his major. This gives me confidence considering I am currently enrolled at Carthage. As for ethical issues in his job area, he described how he sometimes stretches the truth when talking to clients. He makes sure he gets the best price when selling tickets to make sure he gets the best price for making money. Overall I learned a lot from Doug Gole and I am excited for my future. My second interview involved my uncle, Craig Dunnum. My uncle works in hardwood sales. I interviewed him mainly because of his background in sales. My uncle had also attended a small private school for Business. He is currently a part

time salesman for hardwood products as well as an entrepreneur with his birdfeed sales. Throughout his life he has been involved in beef sales. Overall my uncle has only been involved sales, he has plenty of experience. I was all eyes and ears as he told me all of us adventures he was involved in. He is currently involved in three business ventures. Bird feed, beef sales, and hardwood sales. There really arent many ethical issues in his job areas. Overall I learned a great deal from my uncle and it will be worth it in my future. Through interviews, research, and an assessment I have learned a great deal about myself as well as my possible future jobs. I am extremely excited for my future career and my time her at Carthage as I realized this is a great school for me. I feel that if I keep on working towards these jobs, things will fall in place. I have learned that networking will help immensely. I am not completely sure how some people luck out with these jobs, but I hope to get my break in the future.
