The Client
The Dyfed Archaeological Trust is one of four Welsh Archaeological Trust (WATs) established to advance the education of the public in archaeology and is committed to helping protect, record and interpret all aspects of the historic environment.
The Regional Historic Environment Records, managed and maintained by the four Trusts, include over 200,000 individual entries and are continually updated and expanded as new information becomes available. Online access to these records has been achieved through the Archwilio website found at www.archwilio.org.uk

The App
Dyfed Archaeological Trust, in partnership with Clwyd-Powys, Gwynedd and Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trusts, approached CEMAS to develop their fantastic new Archwilio App.
They felt that an innovative application linked to the website would not only be exciting and engaging, but could raise awareness of the Welsh Archaeological Trusts and their work. The app will enable them to reach new audiences, provide interactive opportunities for public engagement and offer people a unique opportunity to investigate the heritage of Wales.

Content Features
Wherever you may be, up a mountain, on the beach or even in the pub, the app allows users to access over one hundred thousand records in the HERs to nd out about the archaeology of Wales. Should you discover something new about a recorded site, the Archwilio App enables you to send new information to allow existing records to be updated. If you nd something that isnt on Archwilio you may have discovered a new site! The app allows you to take a photograph, make a new record and send it through to your local Archaeological Trust so your information can be added to the system.

The new Archwilio Phone App puts the heritage of Wales on the map. Available to download for free, it makes it possible for anyone with a suitable smartphone to access information on the thousands of known archaeological and historic sites in Wales. The Historic Environment Records of Wales were already available online, but with the launch of the Archwilio App Wales will make this wealth of information, collected by generations of investigators, available to mobile users, allowing them a glimpse of the hidden heritage all around us. The Archwilio App marks an important leap forwards in using technology to discover the heritage of Wales. As well as allowing users to check records, the app can be used to add information, opening up opportunities for volunteers to get directly involved in archaeological recording and investigation. The Archwilio App truly opens archaeology to everyone in Wales.
