N2 Fuel Pump out of Range CMC message Update

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 As posted in E-Jets NEWS Release No. 9 and No. 12, EMBRAER has received reports about the occurrences of ENGINE SHORT DISPATCH on the EICAS with the correlated N2 FUEL PUMP OUT OF RANGE CMC message (fault code 73216417). Note: OVSP TEST FAULT message can also be triggered. CMC

AMS Processor Failures Update

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 As an update of the E-Jets NEWS Release No. 15, EMBRAER informs that Hamilton Sundstrand concluded that the AMS processor board failure is caused by a voltage oscillation that affects the ARINC communication between the AMS Controller and the SPDA. As an immediate action, EMBRAER recommends the replacement of the affected AMS processor board in case of RECIRC SMK DET FAIL CAS message is displayed on CAS during the aircraft power up. FIM is being updated to give correct guidance to maintenance and a temporary revision is expected to be released before the end of February/2008 with the necessary information. The development of an improved AMS processor board is currently being evaluated by Hamilton Sundstrand. A temporary revision (TR) of FIM 26-1600-810-802-A has already been released in order to optimize the troubleshooting services.

In most cases, as previously informed, the N2 pump sensor replacement was the final action. Therefore, based on events and removals, GE and EMBRAER have started an investigation on this sensor. Also, the removed sensors were sent to the manufacturer and, after tests, no faults were identified in the components. Therefore, in order to reproduce the fault, a suspected sensor was installed in an engine at GE for running test and also in a specific bench test (with a variable gap) in order to measure the gap of the sensor. However, the reproduced. fault could not be

In case operators have occurrences of ENGINE SHORT DISPATCH on the EICAS with the correlated N2 FUEL PUMP OUT OF RANGE CMC message (fault code 73216417), EMBRAERs recommendation is to troubleshoot according to FIM TASK 73-21-00-810904-A and the correlated GE CF34-8E Subtask 72-00-00-810-109. Also, a procedure for cleaning the connectors that interface with the N2 sensor was included in GE CF34-8E Subtask 72-00-00-810-109 and can be used for fault confirmation.

New Cockpit Electro-Mechanic Latch

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 Electromechanical latch actuation failures have been reported during operation due to low reliability of optical sensors. EMBRAER informs that the new cockpit door latch PN AS-200-00075 is available through AIPC and is two-way interchangeable with the previous PN AS-200-00004.

Escape Slide Assembly Installation Inspection Service Bulletin

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 ANAC, Brazilian Certification Authority, issued the following Aircraft Airworthiness Directive: AD2008-01-03 applicable to EMBRAER 170 aircraft with serial numbers (SN) 17000002, 17000004 thru 17000013, and 17000015 thru 17000196 and AD2008-01-04 applicable to EMBRAER 190 aircraft with serial numbers (SN) 19000002, 19000004 thru 19000132 and 19000135. The reason for this is that the escape slide system installation has been bound without removal of the tie-down straps which are used for escape slide packing. If the tie-down straps are not removed, the aircraft door will not reach the fully open position, and the consequent deployment of the escape slide system in a casual emergency evacuation will not occur, affecting the safety of the occupants.

Figure 1 Pre-mod (left) and Post-mod (right) latches.

The new electromechanical latch had the optical sensor replaced by microswitches and other improvements have been added to the new assembly: - Solenoid attachment improvement and addition of a shock absorber; - Bolt curvature redesign; - Internal spring redesign; - Detent lever modification; - Manual override improvement; - Reduced internal mechanism friction and solenoid power consumption; - The bolt stop pin was increased to improve the lock operation; - Reduced weight; Please refer to PIL 170-52-0023 and 19052-0008 for detailed information.

Therefore, sufficient reason exists to request compliance with those ADs within the next 600 flight hours after the rd effective date of the ADs (March 3 , 2008). The action required is to perform a visual inspection on the escape slide packs of the forward and aft doors. If tiedown straps are found, they must be cut and discarded. Please refer to Service Bulletins 170-250088 and 190-25-0062 for detailed inspection and procedures.

Ram Air Turbine (RAT) Retraction task observations

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER released SNLs 170-24-0027 and 190-24-0021 Ram Air Turbine (RAT) Retraction task observations in order to call the operators attention regarding the necessary requirements when performing RAT Retraction task.

Hydraulic System Pressure Indication

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER has received one report from the worldwide fleet regarding hydraulic system pressure indication on the hydraulic synoptic display. The pressure indication of the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 hydraulic systems remained green instead of changing to amber when the hydraulic pressure decreased below 12410 kPa (1800 psi) on Load 21.2. However, it does not affect the logic indication for the "HYD X LO PRESS" CAS message. For Load up to 19.4, the pressure indication of the No. 1, No. 2, and No.3 hydraulic systems changes to amber when the hydraulic pressure decreases below 12410 kPa (1800 psi) accordingly. The AMM procedure will be revised, at the next scheduled revision, to mention the behavior of both Loads. The hydraulic system display logic will be revised for the hydraulic pressure indication to change to amber at 12410 kPa (1800 psi) in a future Load revision.

Potable Water Servicing Fill/ Drain Switch position

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER was informed about an event of no potable water available in the lavatories and galley in flight. A suspect of water leakage was considered. On the ground, it was found that the PWS Fill/ Drain switch was not in the NORMAL position and the service panel door was forced closed.

New LAN kit availability

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 The LAN kits recommended to be used with Primus Epic system are those tested by Honeywell and manufactured by Innovative Control Systems, Inc (ICS): LTEPIC-25 and LANTAP-10. LTEPIC-25 is no longer being produced; therefore, LANTAP-10 will be replacing it. There are some differences regarding the procedure to set up the laptop computer in order to use the Remote Terminal. Further information can be found on Honeywell's Technical Newsletter A239999-030 (Revision 002, 25 Feb 2008). EMBRAER's Technical Publication will also be revised accordingly.

When the Fill/Drain switch is either in the FILL or DRAIN position, the Fill/Drain valve is actuated. In this condition, it is not possible to pressurize the water tank, as the pressure from the bleed air flows through the overflow tube and escapes through the aft drain mast (E170/175/190) or through the forward drain port (E-195).

Page 4

March 2008
EMBRAER emphasizes the need to adhere to the procedure - AMM II 12-1401 Potable Water Tank Servicing - by exercising care to set the switch to the NORMAL position at the end of the servicing before closing the service door; otherwise, this can damage the door. If the door is damaged, the closing with the switch in the wrong position becomes easier, leading to the event of lack of water in flight.

FLT CTRL NO DISPATCH due to MSV Leakage Test failed Update

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER has received some reports from the field saying that FLT CTRL NO DISPATCH CAS message is being displayed during the flight control built-in test (Hydraulic P-BIT) on airplanes equipped with Primus EPIC LOAD 19 or 21 incorporated and operating at low temperature conditions. SNL 170-27-0006 and SNL190-27-0005 (reviewed in Dec-07) provide procedures to mitigate this situation. Also, OB 170012-04 brings a procedure to cover operational side. In addition, it is recommended that the airline incorporate SNL and OB, since the picture below shows that the number of events decreased after these procedures were adopted by one operator who had 80% of the cases caused by this event.

New Engine Bleed LowPressure Check Valve

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER would like to inform that ANAC ADs 2005-09-03 and 2006-11-01 were revised to state, as terminating action, the replacement of check valves PN 1001447-3 with the improved PN 1001447-4 in conjunction with MRBR task number 36-11-02-002 revised in May/07 (or further revisions approved by ANAC). Operators that do not follow ANAC documentation should refer to their local authority approved directives. SNLs 17036-0017 and 190-36-0013 have further information on this subject.

ADS Probe X Fail caused by Wind Gust / Jet Blast

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 To inform that EMBRAER released, in March, SNLs 170-34-0017 and 190-340016 ADS PROBE 'X' FAIL CAS MESSAGES CAUSED BY WIND GUST / JET BLAST. These SNLs were issued to clarify some remaining effects related to wind gust/jet blast on aircraft configured with ADSP8/ADSP-8A and Load 21. ADSP-8A is a process that is under certification and it is expected to be introduced in the production line in May, 2008. The final fix for these events will be implemented in Load 23.x.

pumps on due to lower values of N2 than current thresholds. The new SPDA Block 11.1 incorporates a change in these thresholds preventing the fuel AC pumps from being turned on unnecessarily, mainly during taxiing. With this modification, EMBRAER expects that the Fuel Feed Fault events will be considerably reduced in the whole E-Jet fleet. So, EMBRAER recommends that operators incorporate this upgrade. SPDA Block 11.1 can be implemented by following the instructions of SB170-240043 or SB190-24-0014 depending on the aircraft type, both released by the end of December 2007, as informed during the EOC 2007 events.

Issue No. 16

Auto Brake System Improvement

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 Aircraft with auto brake configuration Operators have complained about a surging during Autobrake disengagement when using the brake pedals for disengaging. New ABM PN 142-071171 is being introduced to propose a product improvement in order to prevent the occurrence of such events in the fleet and also implement the following correction and improvements: Autobrake disengagement improvement, when using the pedals for disengaging; - Stack memory optimization, making its use more efficient; - Software robustness improvement.

Emergency Light System Return to service

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER has issued SNLs 170-330018 and 190-33-0024 with the proper procedures to ensure sufficient emergency battery charge to an aircraft not powered for more than 3 days to return it to service. Investigations revealed that there is a malfunction on the circuit board of the ELPU (Emergency Light Power Unit) for the battery charge and the presented alternative procedures will avoid delays and battery removals. EMBRAER/ C&D have reviewed the ELPU design and a definite solution will be available by the second quarter of 2008. This failure mode is not related with the one presented in E-jets NEWS Release No. 15 (Emergency Light System One Minute Test). Therefore, it is recommended that the procedures be followed separately in order to avoid confusion or delays. Please refer to the mentioned SNLs for detailed information.

Aircraft must be equipped with the PRIMUS EPIC Field-Loadable Software System (LOAD 19.3), or a higher version, and must be accomplished with new BCM PN 142-091141 or (E170) PN 142071142 that requires harness modification. ABM and BCM interchangeability for the E170 and E190 are as following: - For the E170 and E190 fleets, the Old ABM PN 142-07117 is not interchangeable with new PN 142071171; - For the E170, fleet the old BCM PN 142-071141 is not interchangeable with new PN 142-071142; - For the E190, fleet the old BCM PN 142-09114 is not interchangeable with new PN 142-091141 For the EMBRAER 190 fleet, the PIL (Part Information Letter) N. 190-32-0032 was issued for ABM and PIL N. 190-320031 to BCM. The new ABM and BCM implementations in the field will be accomplished by service a bulletin which is under the final approval process.

Effectivity: EMBRAER 190 In order to include some improvements in the new EMBRAER 190 Horizontal Stabilizer Actuator Control Electronic (HS-ACE), SB 190-27-0016 will be revised. The updated units will be identified as PN 416500-1005 mod. 2. The airplanes which have PN -1005 mod 0 or mod 1 will be re-called for an update to the new -1005 mod 2. Basically, the new HS-ACE will have the following modifications: - firmware modification to improve the HS-ACE Cross Channel Data Link (CCDL) monitor robustness; - firmware modification to avoid creep logic monitor tripping; - the rated voltage of the 270V DC Bus capacitor (C93) has been increased from 450V to 650V.

Potable water T-fitting Replacement Service Bulletin

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER has issued Service Bulletins 170-38-0011 and 190-38-0011 REPLACEMENT OF T-FITTING IN THE POTABLE WATER SYSTEM. These SBs provide instructions for replacing the current metallic T-Fitting, installed in the forward water distribution line, with a new one that has a change in the section variation, which makes it more resistant to freezing cycles. The event background and recommendations can be found in E-jets NEWS No.15. Please refer to the mentioned Service Bulletins for detailed procedures and effectivity.

Figure 1 - Step sleeve and clamps

Events during operation showed the possibility of leakage of waste during the drainage of waste tank, due to damage on the step sleeve located between the waste tank drain line and the service panel. Therefore, it is recommended the installation of the improved step sleeve and new T-bolt clamps, according to the SB.

recommended that the respective PS be replaced: - If the CMC points out to the BCM1 replace PS 1, Mau1 - If the CMC points out to the BCM2 replace PS 2, Mau2 Instead of PS replacement, it would be even better for investigation purposes, if the operator could swap the Power Supplies (PS 1, MAU 1 with PS 2, MAU 2) and monitor the aircraft, verifying if the behavior migrates to the opposite BCM. A SNL will be issued soon covering this issue.

BRK LH FAULT and BRK RH FAULT messages momentarily displayed on CAS

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER has received reports stating that the BRK LH FAULT and BRK RH FAULT messages are momentarily displayed on CAS (2 to 4 seconds). It may happen either in flight or in the ground operation. At the same time, the CMC records the following maintenance messages: - MAU1(or 2) BCM1(or 2) FAULT - BCM1(or2)/MAU1(or2)/NWSCM/WRG FAULT EMBRAER, Liebherr and Crane are investigating the root cause. One of the BCMs looses the communication with the ASCB for approximately 4 seconds. Through the DVDR it is possible to identify that during this period the Brake parameters such as pedal and brake pressure signals, go to zero and then back to normal. The BCM itself is the most suspected LRU. However, one possibility taken into consideration at this point of the investigation is that a power fluctuation from the respective MAU PS could cause this condition. But from the PS standpoint, this fluctuation is normal. It would be into the tolerance range. The problem is that the BCM may not be robust enough to withstand this fluctuation. Although none of the suspicions above has been confirmed yet, one of the following actions is recommended in order to help in the investigation, whenever an aircraft is presenting such behavior: Verify through the FHDB the BCM that is causing the behavior. Replace the respective BCM (1 or 2) and send it to the manufacturer for investigation. Also for investigation purpose, in case the BCM replacement is not effective, and based on the current assumption that a power fluctuation from the PS could be causing such behavior, it is

MLG Shimmy Damper Sight Glass

Effectivity: EMBRAER 170 / 190 EMBRAER has received a few reports from the world wide fleet regarding cracked MLG shimmy damper sight glasses. EMBRAER would like to inform that a preliminary analysis revealed that these cracks could have been caused by impact of the airport debris. Nevertheless, the shimmy damper design is under investigation to confirm this preliminary analysis, assuring that the applicable tests at shop are being done to this fault mode. EMBRAER would like to ask the operators to report any new occurrence of cracked shimmy damper sight glass in order to continue monitoring the events in the world wide fleet, which would be helpful in guiding our investigation with the supplier.
