Overview
Interprofessionallearninginvolvesstudentslearningfromstudentsfromotherprofessions,aswellaslearning withstudentsfromotherprofessions,forexampleintheclassroom,andlearningaboutotherprofessions. Associatedtermsinclude"multiprofessionaleducation","commonlearning","sharedlearning",and "interdisciplinarylearning." Thereisdebateabouttheeffectivenessofinterprofessionaleducationinenablingcollaborativepractice. Researchandsystematicreviewscontinuetoidentifysomeevidenceofeffectivenessinchangingattitudes. Butmoreempiricalevidenceoflongertermimpactisneeded,particularlyinrespectofeffectsonservice qualityandserviceusersandpatientsexperience.Nevertheless,moreevaluationsofIPEhavebeen conductedthanformanyothercommonlyacceptededucationalapproaches.

Recognizingtheimportanceofinterprofessionaleducationasoneoftheinnovativeapproachesthatcanhelp tackletheglobalhealthworkforcechallenge,theWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)convenedaWHO StudyGrouponInterprofessionalEducation&CollaborativePracticein2007[2]toarticulateagreater understandingofthisissuewithinaglobalcontext.ItwastaskedwithprovidingguidancetoMemberStates onhowtheycoulduseinterprofessionalcollaborationtoscaleupandbuildmoreflexiblehealthworkforces thatenablelocalhealthneedstobemetefficientlyandeffectivelywhilemaximizingresources.

TheWHOStudyGroupengagedvariouspartnersandundertookaprogramofworkthatculminatedinthe publicationofWHOsFrameworkforActiononInterprofessionalEducationandCollaborativePractice[3] inMarch2010.TheFrameworkhighlightsthecurrentstatusofinterprofessionalcollaborationaroundthe world,identifiesthemechanismsthatshapesuccessfulcollaborativeteamwork,andoutlinesaseriesofaction itemsthatpolicymakerscanapplywithintheirlocalhealthsystem.Itprovidesstrategiesandideasthatcan helphealthpolicymakersimplementtheelementsofinterprofessionaleducationandcollaborativepracticethat willbemostbeneficialintheirownjurisdiction. TheWHOStudyGroupconsistedofalmost30topeducation,practiceandpolicyexpertsfromacrossevery regionoftheworld.OverallleadershipwasprovidedbyCoChairsProf.JohnHVGilbert(Universityof BritishColumbia&CanadianInterprofessionalHealthCollaborative)andDr.JeanYan(WorldHealth Organization)andasecretariatledbyMr.StevenJ.Hoffman(WorldHealthOrganization).
