Siva and his parents went to the National Zoo last Saturday. They saw many wild animals there. ‘Siva watched how some of them moved. Siva was amazed to see how the apes swung from tree to tree, or how a troop of monkeys expertly climbed a clump of trees. He and his parents also saw a herd of elephants ambling in their spacious enclosure. They also saw a pride of lions prowling and a herd of wild horses galloping. They then went to the reptile section of the zoo to see the reptiles. There they saw snakes gliding and turtles swimming. At the zoo aviary, they looked at a flight of doves flutter. They were fortunate enough to witness an eagle swoop down to catch a mouse. They also saw a flock of wild ducks waddle towards a large pond. When they were at the aquarium, they watched a shoal of fish and a school of dolphins swimming in their tanks. All the movements Siva saw at the zoo were magical! Agan and his parents have visited an energy efficient solar house in Ayer Keroh. This is what he has written in his diary. 17 January Ayer Keroh is magnificent! It is so clean and ‘green’ with lots of vegetation. I'm so excited to see the energy efficient solar house. Itis situated in a very lovely place in Ayer Keroh. It is surrounded by lots of trees to help stop heat from the sun warming up the house. The house itself looks like an ordinary house from outside. The white steel roof is lined with high quality reflective aluminium foil and 50 mm thick dense rookwool blankets. This reflects much of the sun's heat during the day and, therefore, reduces heat entering the house from the roof The wide roof hangs over the recessed windows, which face north and south so as to avoid direct sunlight entering the house through them. The double glazed windows with low-e coating and argon filled gaps and the insulated walls of aerated autoclaved blocks ensure that heat cannot pass easily to the interior of the house, as well as resist sound. They also keep much of the air conditioned coolness from being lost. Inside the house, there is an efficient inverter air conditioning unit that is filled with ozone safe gas. It is a multi-split unit with only one outdoor compressor and four internal units specifically chosen for its high energy efficiency. The entire house is equipped with energy efficient equipment and appliances such as LCD televisions, microwave oven, refrigerator and an induction cooker. All the lighting is energy efficient fluorescent. Seventy-five per cent of total energy needed by the house is generated by the sun by means of solar panels and a solar heater. The solar heater uses glass vacuum tubes to produce an adequate supply of hot water up to 95°C at the taps. The solar cells on the roof cover a total area of forty square metres. They produce electricity which Is fed to the Malaysian electricity distribution grid. The solar cells also add shade to the roof. These solar cells provide about 75% of the power demand of the house. |just love the energy efficient solar house! | wish | could own one one day. What a beautiful world we live in! 250 SS= es. Ecosystem! Read a text on the ecosystem and answer comprehension questions. 260 The ecosystem is a fairly self-contained system where living things live in an environment, such as a jungle or river. There are four elements in an ecosystem: nor-living things, plants which are producers, consumers and decomposers. Sunlight, water, oxygen, minerals and dead living things are the non-living environment. Plants come in various sizes such as microscopic phytoplankton and gigantic redwood trees. These plants produce their own food using energy from the sun, water and carbon doixide. This process is called photosynthesis. Consumers are herbivores ( animals that eat plants ), carnivores ( animals that eat other animals ) and omnivores (animals that eat plants and other animals ). Bacteria, fungi and insects that break down dead living things and their waste products are decomposers. In doing so, these decomposers release energy into the environment and leave organic matter to the earth. The organic matter provides nourishment which is absorbed by plants, thereby starting the cycle again The biosphere is the part of the world where life can exist. Humans dominate the ecosystem in many ways. They cause pollution which threatens the ecosystem. Excessive felling of trees in jungles, for instance, destroys natural habitats. As a result, several species of living things are now extinct. Excessive tree felling also causes soil erosion Today, two-thirds of the earth’s surface is affected by soil erosion, which is mostly caused by humans. Conserving jungles and forests preserves priceless natural habitats for living things, and helps maintain a balance between living things and the environment. Resources like earth, water and living things are renewable because they can replenish themselves faster than they are consumed. All living things renew themselves via reproduction. Fish population is sensitive to water development. It diminishes when, for example, reservoirs fill with silt and become less biologically diverse. Non-renewable resources form very slowly. Coal, gas and oil are non-renewable resources. Once they are depleted, there is no way to replenish them except to recycle waste materials. These non-renewable resources are the most widely used sources of energy. They are dwindling. They are called fossil fuels because they were formed from the remains of living things buried millions of years ago. Burning them supplies 88% of human energy needs. Industries use fossil fuels, and as a result, produce erosive agents. These factory emissions contain sulphuric acid, nitrogen oxide and other chemicals that collect in rain clouds. They interact with air in the atmosphere to form acid rain. The acid rain is more corrosive than ordinary rain. This accelerates the weathering of rocks and harms vegetation needed to hold earth in place. Acid rain in some places makes some lakes so acidic that some species of fish cannot survive. Ozone forms a barrier protecting living things on earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, About ninety per cent of ozone in the atmosphere occurs naturally. Sunlight forces oxygen molecules to separate into individual oxygen atoms. When one of these oxygen atoms bonds with anormal oxygen molecule, it forms ozone consisting of three oxygen atoms. Ozone is depleted by chemical pollutants such as halocarbons. They are used as coolants in refrigerators and air conditioners, as cleaning solvents and as propellants for aerosol cans. The reduction of ozone in the stratosphere ( lower atmosphere: 10 — 15 km above the surface of the earth ) is a serious concem. Greenhouse gases form a layer around the earth, trapping the heat from the sun, and causing global warming. The accumulation of greenhouse gases is another serious concern. Carbon dioxide is the most significant greenhouse gas. It composes about 0.04% of the atmosphere. Plants use it during photosynthesis to produce food and oxygen. Added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere comes from the burning of fossil fuels for energy and transportation. Carbon dioxide is also produced from natural sources such as the decomposition of dead plants, from forest fires and from gas exchange between the surface of oceans and the atmosphere. Oceans absorb more carbon dioxide than they give off. During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide that more or less equals the amount that enters the atmosphere by the respiration of living things and the decay of organic matter. This balance is disrupted by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, and the cutting and buming of trees. Defending the dwindling forests and jungles, championing the wise use of resources, and developing technologies that make industry and energy production safer and cleaner are challenges we must face in order to maintain and protect our ecosystem. Renewable energy is the solution. We have to use renewable energy instead of non-renewable energy. < Environmental Issues. 261 262 “. An Italian physicist and chemist by the name of Alessandro Volta discovered direct current electricity. He was born in Come, Italy on 18 February 1745. He came to prominence when he published a description of improved electrometers. He was made a professor of physics at Como in 1774. He was only 29! He was later made a professor of natural philosophy at Patvia in 1779 at the age of 34, Volta made improvements in the electrophorus in 1777 and in the electroscope. He published a paper on an improved electroscope in 1782. He also invented a lamp that burnt on flammable air, an audiometer and an electric pistol Volta experimented on animal electricity and discovered the ‘voltaic pile’ in 1800. It was the first source of direct current electricity. It was, in fact, the world's first electric battery. Volta opened the electrical age by decomposing water by electrolysis, electroplating precious metals and forming the electromagnet. Napoleon I of France invited Volta to Paris in 1801 to perform experiments before the Institut de France. Volta was presented with 6 000 francs and a gold medal, and was honoured with a commission to repeat his experiments. He was made a count and a senator of the kingdom of Lombardy. He was later bestowed the Cross of the Legion of Honour. Volta was elected a fellow by the Royal Society of London in 1791. The Copley medal was conferred on him in 1794. He passed away on 5 March 1827 at the age of 82. His works were collected in five volumes in 1816 and in seven volumes from 1918 to 1929. The volt, which is the unit of electromotive force and electric potential, was named after him. Today's world needs remarkable achievers like Count Alessandro Volta.
