Cuddalore has always been classified as a multi-hazard prone district. Cyclones and floods have wreaked havoc in the District several times in the past few centuries. The District also falls within the zone-3 with respect to earthquakes. A part of the problem owes its enesis to the location of the district. The District has a lon coastline of !".! #$. Therefore the district is vulnerable to the cyclonic depressions and the resultant rains which causes floods %ike the rest of the shore of the bay of &en al cuddalore had been prone to cyclone. The hurricane of April '3('")* wrecked three vessels between Cuddalore and pondicherry .+even hundred and fifty men lost their lives. A cyclone in December '",- caused dama e to the si. ships in the /ondicherry road. There were violent storms on the coast in '"!0. '"1). '"*!. '1-1. '10-. '1!'. '1)-. '1)0.'1!3. '1"' and '1"). 2n the storm of '1!3 seven vessels were wrecked between Cuddalore and /ortnovo There were hi h floods in the 3adilam in 1864 and in /ennayar in 1874. 4f these floods the flood of '11) was the worst. 2n '11)( rivers /ennayar and 3adilam were united due to heavy flood. Their waters swept throu h the town for twenty four hours. 5The current tore across the plain round which the offices stand to a depth of five feet( and a youth narrowly escaped drownin close to the 4ld time un there. Thus the floods were the source of de-urbanization of Cuddalore in the '*th century 2n the year 0--) the District witnessed a severe drou ht in may( floods in 4ctober and then in December 6the tsunami.
