The fairytale legend

In 1953 Brian Lister petitioned his father to allow him time o from working at the George Lister factory to build a race car. Horace Lister agreed. If he hadnt, the face of UK motorsport might have looked very dierent. With a shoestring budget compared to his competitors and often working into the early hours of the morning, Brian and the craftsmen from George Lister Engineering entered their rst race in 1954. Even though Brian Lister was only active as a racing car constructor for little more than 5 years, his success shook the foundations of the established racing car teams to the very core.

The legend is reborn

The Lister Jaguar was driven by some of the most notable racing car drivers of the 50s including: Archie Scott Brown, Stirling Moss, Ivor Beub, Bruce Halford and Innes Ireland amongst many others.

Between 1954 and 1959 only 50 original cars were produced but they won, or were placed, over two thousand times in track events worldwide

As in the past, the new cars are handcrafted by the expert engineers at the George Lister Engineering Works in Cambridge under the watchful eye of Colin Chippy Crisp, who worked on the original cars in 1958. Fitted with the race proven Jaguar D Type 3.8 litre 6 cylinder engine complete with the famous wide-angle cylinder head, dry sump lubrication and genuine Jaguar D type gearbox.

All new Lister Jaguars will come complete with a FIA HTP passport for historic racing, alternatively if you require a Lister for the road, we can build your car to adhere to IVA regulations for use on the UK or EU roads. For road use specications outside the EU please contact us.

British craftsmanship at its best

The rst Lister rolled out of the Cambridge factory in England on the 30th July 1954. Within 3 years Lister had become the most revered manufacturer of racing cars in the world, thanks to the dedicated craftsmen who gave their all and had one simple belief that they could build a race winning car. Only the nest craftsmanship goes into making a new Lister Jaguar. For example, it takes 500 hours to hand craft the exquisite aluminium body using traditional methods. Our tubular chassis are made in the original jigs using the highest grade seamless steel engineering tube and all welding is pressure and crack tested to ensure the integrity of all joints is awless even under racing conditions. We have embraced some modern techniques too and use the latest CNC machines to ensure 100% accuracy to manufacture the wheel hubs and suspension parts. The De-Dion rear suspension is also manufactured using the highest quality materials in the original jigs at the George Lister factory. Through our dedication to British craftsmanship we ensure that Lister remains true to our motto: A British Racing Icon .

The Jaguar Powertrain

Lister was unique in the fact that it was the only racing team to work directly with Jaguar and their competition department at Browns Lane, Coventry. The powertrain Jaguar supplied was the legendary D-Type unit. Originally seen in the XK120 in 1948, by 1957 it had been developed into one of the worlds most reliable racing engines, having won Le Mans ve times along with innumerable other successes. The 1957 Jaguar powered Lister proved to be Listers most successful car and the anity between the great car companies is one that never waned. Today, the new Lister Jaguars will use the exact same Jaguar D-Type 3.8 engine tted with the famous wide angle head and D-Type gearbox as was in period. The unit will be manufactured brand new by Crosthwaite & Gardiner in Sussex and tted to the Listers at the George Lister Factory in Cambridge.

George Lister Engineering

Founded in 1890 by Brian Listers grandfather, George Lister Engineering is one of Cambridgeshires oldest rms. Renowned for their architectural metal work, their blacksmiths produced some of the nest wrought iron works in Cambridge and the surrounding counties. Today George Lister Engineering has diversied and recently worked on large projects such as Brunel University and the Chatham Maritime Marina. They also had their part to play in the 2012 Olympic Games with contracts for the Stratford Link Bridge and the Olympic Velodrome, where Team GB dominated the cycling competition winning seven out of a possible ten gold medals. The new Lister Jaguar is, as in the 1950s, being manufactured and assembled by George Lister Engineering in Cambridgeshire.

Archie Scott Brown

William Archibald Scott Brown was born on the 13th May 1927 in Paisley, Scotland.
As a result of German measles during his mothers pregnancy, Archie was born with severe disgurement of his legs and right arm. Tremendous determination and countless operations were needed to allow Archie to walk, although he never grew more than 5 feet tall. His disability certainly didnt hinder him behind the wheel and his courageous driving style was not overlooked by Brian Lister. In 1954 Archie swept to prominence in the Lister Bristol, but it wasnt until 1957 that Archie really hit the headlines in the Lister Jaguar, when he proved to be almost unbeatable during the course of the season. Tragically, Archie died following a crash in a works Lister on the 18th May 1958. He was 31.

Laurence Pearce
In 1986 Laurence Pearce breathed new life into Lister. It was during this time that the rst purpose built road car was created in the form of the Lister Le Mans. With a price tag of 115,000 and capable of 200mph+, 90 were made between 1986 and 1992.

Lister Storm
Success at this endeavour led the company to design a new sports racer, the Lister Storm. Launched in 1993, it would use the largest V12 engine ever tted to a production road car up to that time, a 7.0 Litre Jaguar unit. Due to the immense power the Lister Storm was the worlds fastest production 4 seat car for over 12 years. The Storm was later developed for motorsport and proved immensely successful, winning the FIA GT Championship in 2000, the British Empire Trophy, The Empire Gold Cup and the Tourist Trophy. In 2003 Pearce developed a bespoke Le Mans prototype, the Storm LMP, tted with a 6.0 litre Chevrolet V8 putting out 570bhp.

Lister is a hallowed British car brand and Im so delighted that its back in business. In the 50s Lister Knobblys were out-dragging D type Jaguars, pulling 180 mph and using miracle materials like magnesium alloy. I cant wait to see existing Lister cars properly authenticated, new Listers being built and lots of Knobblys back in classic racing. This is wonderful news for the proud Lister racing heritage that stretches back more than half a century.

Ive got a painting on my wall that I commissioned as my Dream Come True. In the foreground Im harrying Stirling Moss through the Goodwood Chicane at the rst ever Revival Meeting in 1998. Hes in the very Aston Martin DBR1 that took him to victory in the 1959 Tourist Trophy, Im in the ex Ecurie Belge Lister Jaguar of the same year. Its a true image of what actually happened on the track but I had the Chicane and the Grandstand behind painted as if it was in 59 because one of the little pink dots in the crowd is an 8 year old Ti dreaming of racing a Lister Jaguar like his hero Archie Scott Brown

As was the case in 1958, George Lister Engineering have been contracted to build the new Lister Jaguar - the only change is that the new cars will adhere to the FIA Appendix K regulations.

To celebrate 60 years since the rst Lister was completed, a very limited number of Lister Cars will feature a unique 60th anniversary plaque honed from solid silver. The 60th anniversary plaque will adorn only those cars delivered in 2014 and as such these cars will become true collectors pieces.

In September 2013 the news that Lister was back in business hit the newsstands. The response was phenomenal and came from all corners of the globe as journalists, enthusiasts, racers and fans rejoiced at the news that Lister would build the Lister Jaguar Knobbly once more.

Sanction Your Lister

There are currently a number of non-factory built cars in the market sporting Lister badges. Some of these cars are crude facsimiles but others may be classed as tool room copies and may even have obtained FIA/HTP historic racing papers. All non-factory built Listers can be brought to the Lister factory and sanctioned in order to obtain a genuine BHL(S) chassis number - the minimum requirement to obtain a sanction chassis number will be the supply and tment of a genuine Lister chassis. All other renovation work can also be conducted at the Lister factory in Cambridge.

Take your new Lister racing

Every new Lister Knobbly purchased from the factory will be suitable for all levels of historic racing. Each car will come with a FIA HTP passport and will be eligible for race series such as the prestigious Stirling Moss Trophy run by Duncan Wiltshire and Motor Racing Legends (www.motorracinglegends.com), amongst other races throughout the year. Should you have any doubt about your driving skills, former Lister Storm driver Ti Needell is also on board to oer track day training to every new Lister owner.
