Marking scheme: Mid-term test 25% on Wednesday October 20, 2010, 11:30-13:00 in STE B0138, assignments 20%, and nal exam 55%. Note 1: Full attendance in lectures is a necessary part of this course. If you can not write midterm for a valid (e.g. medical) reason, the weight of the midterm and will be added to the weight of the nal exam. Note 2: A nal grade less than 50% is qualied as failure for any course at this level, according to the university policy. tests will be open book. The Mid-term test will take place during the class period (80 minutes). You need to have the inexpensive non-programmable calculator. Calculators with statistical capability can be helpful. Note 3: Make sure to write your name and student number at the top of every page of your answers to the assignments. Always keep a copy of your assignment before handing them in. Course outline: Descriptive statistics using a software package. A concise survey of probability. The normal distribution. The central limit theorem and statistical estimation illustrated via simulation. Hypothesis testing, the design of experiments, paired sampling, categorical data and regression illustrated via simulation. Examples appropriate to the biosciences analyzed with statistical software. Assignments : 6 (a tentative number) written assignments consisting in solving problems from the textbook, plus some problems using MINITAB (http://www.minitab.com/). Late assignments are not accepted. Mid-term : written exam (80 minutes) on Wednesday October 20, 2010. Books, notes and faculty of Science calculators are permitted. Final exam : nal written exam (180 minutes). Books, notes and calculators are permitted.
