Volume 38 Number 4 January 26, 2014

Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina

Dear Eastminster Family, This year Im going to do more to connect with God. Has that thought crossed your mind? If it has, or even if it hasnt, I encourage you to invest at least a few of the 168 hours God gives you each week to commune with Him through study, service, worship and prayer. Start by joining us to celebrate the Lords Supper this Sunday, then join us as the February sermons focus on sermon ideas and questions from Eastminster members. The February 2 sermon comes from: Id like to hear a sermon on hope. In addition to uniting with others in worshiping our God, I want to provide one last push letting you know Eastminsters Wednesday and Sunday evening seminars have just begun, but if you move now you can still join them. Sundays at 5:00 p.m. seminars include: 1. Dr. Mark Durrett teaching an overview of Bible that will help equip you for Sunday School teaching, or for otherwise better understanding the stories and connections of Scripture; 2. Exploration of World Religions including Judaism, Islam and Hindu taught by Jeff and Ellen Burden; and 3. A Book Club facilitated by Tara Barr. Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. try: 1. Rev. Jeff Smith and Croskeys Royall teaching selected Bible stories. Learn the stories for yourself, with a few minutes each week also providing tips for sharing the stories with children; 2. The Passion of Our Lord - a symphonic account of the last days of our Lords life and ministry, from the Garden of Gethsemane to the death of Jesus Christ upon the cross (also offered Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m.-12 noon); and 3. Nooma, a video based series relating biblical teaching to contemporary life. For more information on the above, or to learn about ways you can serve within the church or in the community, visit www.eastminsterpres.org and click on the growing, serving, or caring links or feel free to contact Service Coordinator, Julie McDaniel at 803-256-1654 or jmcdaniel@eastminsterpres.org. Dont let the urge pass by and dont let other things crowd your Creator off your calendar. Engage. Engage our living Lord through worship, prayer, study, service, and giving. Blessings,

Brad And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

Two Offerings for an EPW Bible Study

(Eastminster Presbyterian Women) Morning weekday study - On February 4, Eastminster will begin a six-week daytime video series by Max Lucado entitled Come Thirsty. We will meet from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. each Tuesday, through March 11 in room E-351. This series is about having God quench our spiritual thirst. Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty. The water I give will become a spring of water gushing up inside that person, giving eternal life. Sunday eVening study - This evening study is entitled: Making Room for God in our busy lives: practical ways to read Scripture and pray more meaningfully. This will be led by Lynn Grandsire and is a be part of Sunday@5 beginning on February 16 and going through March 30 in room E-350. It will be a six-week study with the Peace Service in the middle as part of the class. To sign-up for the class, e-mail Mary at mbaldauf@eastminsterpres.org or call her at 256-1654.

Sock Collection
Kent Liggitt and Mary Curtis Twitty would like to thank everyone who helped with Socks in a Box. They collected over 800 pairs of socks that were given out at Transitions at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanks for the socks!! At our January 28 meeting, scrimshaw artist Peter Driscoll will give a talk on this ancient and nearly lost art of etching on ivory. Using the traditional manner of whalers, he works completely by hand without the use of power tools or machinery, and only on antique piano keys or other forms of recycled or fossilized ivory, not legally banned. Some of his pieces will be on display. Call Mary Baldauf at 256-1654 or e-mail mbaldauf@eastminsterpres.org to make a lunch reservation ($6.00).
