Title: Travel Time (Vocabulary & Listening) Time: 2 class sessions Context & Rationale: Adult learners in high beginning to intermediate ESL class. Many adults travel for business or pleasure, thus its important to understand the vital information given from either the pilot or flight attendant regarding flight number, connecting flights, local time, etc. Learning Outcomes: SWBAT recall information given by a pilot/flight attendant by listening to an in-flight announcement. SWBAT verbally discuss airline travel related photographs using appropriate vocabulary. SWBAT compose with a partner an in-flight announcement with vital information/vocabulary taught in class. Materials: Laptop/computer with speakers Projector and screen/blank wall Student access to computer with headphones for Practice Phase Student cell phone or mobile device Appendix A Delta Flight Arrival Announcement Appendix B Travel Vocabulary Photographs (makes copies to display in the classroom) Appendix C Screen Shot of Travel in the Sky Website Appendix D Directions for In-flight Announcement

Procedure: 1. Hook/warm up Whole Class

a) Show Appendix A on projector screen-try to fill the whole space with the photograph. Play the audio from youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOcLClbWGnY in the background (start at 0:25 second mark). b) Ask students What have we just listened to? Who is talking? What information is she giving travellers? Why is it important to understand this information? 2. Presentation Phase Whole Class a) Listen and watch another youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njjFVF2hgm8 of a flight attendant announcing a landing. b) Project on screen/wall Appendix B Travel Vocabulary Photographs. c) Allow students to discuss each photograph and vocabulary word. Guide students with any meanings/definitions that are unclear. 3.1 Practice Phase Independent Work a) Show Appendix C-Screen shot and direct students to write down the web address. This will be their assignment in the computer lab/home. b) In the computer lab, students listen to Travel on Sky Airlines http://www.esllab.com/plane1/pln1.htm and complete the following online quiz. Print quiz and bring to the following class session. 3.2 Practice Phase continued next class session a) Share results of online quiz with class. 4. Production Phase Whole Class a) Listen to another flight announcement http://www.hark.com/clips/tqjlczvcdx-stewardess-afterlanding-1 . b) Ask students to share the information they heard on the audio.

c) With a partner, students write and record their own in-flight announcement. Project Appendix D for directions. 5. Wrap up/Review a) Partners play their recorded In-flight announcements to the class..

Your in-flight announcement must include the following: 1. Who is speaking? pilot / captain / flight attendant 2. Where flight is bound for? final destination 3. Local information local time, weather conditions 4. What is the airplanes altitude? 5. What is the flight time? / How long does it take to arrive to destination? 6. What is the arrival gate? *Record your announcement on your cell phone or other mobile device. You will be playing it for the class.
