1 (a) (b) 2 (a) Calculate the heat loss per unit area through the glass window (K=1.4 W/mK) when the inner and out substances of the glass are maintained at 15C and 5C respectively. Derive a three dimensional generalized heat conduction equation in cylindrical co-ordinates. Heat is generated in a slab of 120 mm thickness with a conductivity of 200 W/mK at a rate of 1 10 2 W/m K. Determine the temperature at the mid and quarter planes if the surface temperature on both sides is 150C. Find out heat flux and temperature gradients at three planes. From the fundamentals derive an expression for the maximum temperature in a solid cylinder with uniform heat generation. A aluminum is heated to a uniform temperature of 200C and then allowed to cool in an environment where the air temperature is maintained constant at 30C. The convection heat-transfer coefficient may 2 be taken as 200 W/m C. The cylinder has a diameter of 10 cm and a length of 15 cm. Calculate the temperature of the center lone of the cylinder after a time of 10 min. Also calculate the heat loss. List out the various physical quantities involved with forced convection heat transfer and obtain a dimensionless correlation amongst them. Air at 27C flows over a heated plate at 60C with a velocity of 2 m/s. Estimate the drag force exerted on the first 40 cm of the plate, using the analogy between fluid friction and heat transfer. The properties of -6 2 air at 43.5C are = 17.36 x 10 m /s, K = 0.0275 W/m.K, Pr = 0.7 and Cp = 1.006 kJ/kg C. A plate 30 cm in height and 1m is placed in air at 20 C. If the surface of the plate is maintained at 0 140 C, calculate the boundary layer thickness and local heat transfer coefficient at 15 cm from the leading edge. Also calculate the average heat transfer coefficient over the entire length of the plate. How is the Reynolds number in condensation defined? What is its critical value? 0 A vertical plate 2.8 m high is maintained at 54 C in the presence of a saturated steam at atmospheric pressure. Estimate the heat transfer rate per unit width. What is a shell and tube heat exchangers? Why are baffles used? 0 0 In a shell and tube heat exchangers 50 kg/min of furnace oil is heated from 10 C to 90 C. Steam at 0 120 C flows through the shell and oil flows through the tube. Tube size 1.65 cm ID and 1.9 cm OD. Heat 2 2 transfer coefficient on oil side and stem sides are 85 W/m K and 7420 W/m K respectively. Find the number of passes and number of tubes in each pass if the length of each tube is limited to 2.85. Velocity 3 of oil is limited to 5 cm/s. Density and specific heat of oil are 900 kg/m and 1970 J/kgK respectively. What is meant by thermal radiation? Which part of electromagnetic spectrum is belongs to it? A pipe carrying steam having an outside diameter of 20 cm runs in a large room and is exposed to air at 0 0 a temperature of 30 C. The pipe surface temperature is 400 C. Calculate the loss of heat to surroundings per meter length of pipe due to thermal radiation. The emissivity of the pipe surface is 0.8.
