Advanced Applications of BIM

Introduction
As the take-up of BIM is rapidly growing, the key application of BIM is focused on the detailed 3D modeling, clash detection and construction scheduling. While the benefits of this in terms of productivity and reduced rework are big, BIMs application to early stage conceptual design is still limited. However the full potential of BIM extends far beyond the 3D modeling and clash detection. The ability to utilize BIM through the whole life-cycle of a building, from the early conceptual stages right through to construction and operational stages is the holy grail that remains to be fully exploited. There are many challenges to fully realize this potential though: 1. Flexibility of the BIM systems to respond to the fluid nature of the space planning and architectural geometry at the early stages. 2. Integration of BIM with structural and environmental analysis tools to enable iterative design evolution. 3. Finally, BIM systems are predominantly design tools; operational planning requires a radical new way of utilizing the model for operational planning. This talk will introduce some of the innovative work carried out at Buro Happold to combine the power of BIM technologies such as Autodesk Revit Architecture and Revit with the conceptual design and interoperability solutions.

Early stage space planning

The BIM model has all the intelligence embedded to assess the effectiveness of functional adjacencies, travel distances, and access and egress times. By utilizing Autodesks scripting and programming capability it is easy to add spatial analysis functionality within the BIM environment with realtime feedback to support early stage design optioneering that maximizes value from the development. The session will show examples of spatial optimisaiton using Buro Happolds SMART Space tools.

Conceptual form, structures and environmetal optimisation

Iterative optimization is inherent to every design process. This is especially important at the concept design stage where the architects and engineers explore a number of design options in terms of geometric forms, structural schemes, and individual member sizes, before arriving at a working solution. The process continues through the detailed design stage where more precise member sizes and connection specifications are detailed. In the majority of projects the iterative design process is manual, ad-hoc and trial and error based, and therefore inefficient. The ability to utilize the 3D model and associated data enables design optimization can drastically reduce design time, reduce costs, and enhance confidence in the design. The session will illustrate the design optimization using realtime design optioneering tools embedded within BIM that can do: Form optimization Structural grid optimization Structural sizing Integrated environmental analysis

Operational planning using BIM

The presentation will show, using real life project examples, how to use the BIM model to carry out ongoing operational planning: Access and egress simulations Staffing (e,g. in airports) Process optimization (e.g. in hospitals)
