The Impact of Training and Development on the Employee Retention at Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd.

INTRODUCTION Background Eswaran Brothers Group; a family oriented business group, is a fraction of the VTV group of companies which has been engaged in various business ventures in Sri Lanka and in Asia since 1942. VTV group of companies is the brainchild of late VTV Deivanayagam Pillai who was an orphan from India, migrated to Sri Lanka at his age of 12. He worked as a minor labour many years and struggled at his early stages. Because of his hard work and determination he gained a good name from his employers and grabbed many opportunities to grow himself as an individual and as a young businessman.

Mr. V.T.V Deivanayagam Pillai developed many values throughout his lifetime. His values and his charismatic leadership earned him lot of loyal co-workers and valuable customers. With all that experience he founded and built one of the well reputed large business entity in Sri Lanka. Which has widespread its wings into many various diverse businesses over the years. Later Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd was founded in 1963 by the eldest son and the current Chairman of the group Mr. D. Eassuwaren. This company together with other 7 companies identified as Eswaran Brothers Group. Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd is in the business of exporting tea bags to Asia, middle east, latin America and many other parts of the world.

Research Problem The impact of Training and Development on the employee retention at Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd.

Justification of the Research Problem The old fashioned management of Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd. together with the modern thinking third generation of the family, has been pulling the group into a transformation process to modernize and systematic to compete in the highly competitive ever changing business world.

The Human Resource Department is one of the key players that contribute in this transformation process. Though it is becoming the major player in the process it has also been transforming

itself into a systemically functioning HR environment from being traditional personnel department for decades. The major issue that the company faces at this point of time, whilst the same is the biggest challenge to the HR department as well, is the high turnover of the skilled workforce in the last 3 years. Moreover this situation has resulted in loosing many valuable high skilled experienced employees.

This research collaborates with the current issue in the company and devolope the study of correlation between the training and development and the employee retention with the intention of proposing the cost effective actions to increase the training and development activities of the company to minimize the high turnover.

Research Question: How does the training and development at Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd. impact the employee retention?

Objectives of the Research: To determine the correlation between the training and development and the employee retention at Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd. To study the impacts of Training and Development on the employee retention in the company. To propose the appropriate action plan to increase structured Training and Development activities to minimize the outflow of the high skilled labour force due to the Jobdissatisfaction CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK Independent Variables Training and Development Proper TNA Trained facilitators Application of the training Top Management Committment Dependent Variables Employee Retention

METHODOLOGY Sampling Technique Convenience Sampling will be adopted for this study as this is a research. Sample Size The current Employees of Eswaran Brothers Group is the selected sample for the study.
