Classification of Drug Therapeutic: Anti-infectives Pharmacologic: Second generation Cephalosporins Pregnancy Catergory B
Mechanism of Action Bind to bacterial cell wall membrane, causing cell death Therapeutic Effects: Bactericidal action
Indication Treatment of Effectively treats bone and joint infections, bronchitis, meningitis, gonorrhea, otitis media, pharyngitis/tonsilliti s, sinusitis, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and is used for surgical prophylaxis, reducing or eliminating infection
Contraindications Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins and related antibiotics; pregnancy (category B), lactation.
Side Effects GI: Diarrhea, nausea, antibioticassociated colitis. Skin: Rash , pruritus, urticaria. Urogenital: Increased serum creatinine and BUN, decreased creatinine clearance.
Nursing Responsibilities
Determine history of hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins, penicillins, and history of allergies, particularly to drugs, before therapy is initiated. Lab tests: Perform culture and sensitivity tests before initiation of therapy and periodically during therapy if indicated. Therapy may be instituted pending test results. Monitor periodically BUN and creatinine clearance. Instruct patient to take medication around the clock at evenly spaced times and to finish the medication completely, even if feeling better Advise patient to report signs of superinfection and allergy Instruct patient to notify health professional if fever and diarrhea develop

Indications moderate to acute or chronic pain and in painful diagnostic or therapeutic measures
Contraindications - Acute intoxication w/ alcohol, hypnotics, narcotics, centrally-acting analgesics, opioids or psychototropic drugs. -Hypersensitivity

-CNS & GI disturbances. -assess for level of pain relief -Nausea, dizziness, somnolence. -Asthenia, fatigue, hot flushes, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, dry mouth, pruritis, diaphoresis, tinnitus. -assess BP & RR -assess bladder & bowel function -monitor for respiratory depression & seizures -to be taken w/ meals to avoid GI upset. -encourage coughing & deep breathing q 2 hrs to prevent atelactasis & pneumonia
& serotonin in the CNS. May produce opioid-like effects, but causes less respiratory depression than morphine.

Nursing Responsibilities Weakness, light-headedness, sleepiness or other symptoms may occur. In the event of such symptoms, the dosage should be reduced or treatment discontinued. Patients should be cautioned against engaging in potentially hazardous activities requiring alertness, such as operating machinery or driving a car
