The function of smoke and heat exhaust systems

Facilitation A/B
For rooms that are least 7 m high (previously 9 m) with a surface area of more than 1,600 m, one of the two allowances described below may be chosen for the rating groups 3,4 and 5 (previously only 4 and 5) if a smoke curtain that is as least 1.0 m high is installed for every 1,600 m. These relaxation allowances cannot be combined! Allowance A: Increased smoke zone surface area. The maximum size of each individual smoke zone can be increased from 1,600 m to 2,600 m if the aerodynamically effective smoke extraction area according to Table 3 is increased by 10% for every additional 100 m above 1,600 m.

Facilitation A/B
Allowance B: Lower smoke curtains. If for operational reasons the smoke curtain surrounding the smoke zone with a surface area of max. 1,600 m cannot be higher than 1.0 m (minimum value), the Aw values in Table 3 may be limited to 50 m of aerodynamically effective smoke extraction area for each smoke zone if there is more than one smoke zone. This applies if: Overall, at the least the Aw value given in Table 3 is reached in the room

All natural smoke extraction systems in the adjacent smoke zones can be opened using the manual opening systems in the smoke zone affected, as an undercurrent under the smoke apron can be expected The air-intake areas correspond to at least the Aw value given in Table 3

Interaction of natural smoke and heat extraction and air-intake area

Sufficient air-intake surfaces are always required in the lower part of the outer wall to allow replacement air to flow in close to the floor.
The area required , Azu , must be defined according to the largest smoke zone area.

The following count as air-intake openings: Independent air-intake equipment; Gates, doors or windows, if they are labelled as "air-inlet opening for natural smoke extraction systems on both the inside and the outside with labels according to DIN 4066, and can be opened from the outside without breakage (no need to break window panes or tear down walls or doors).
It must be possible to open air-intake openings as soon as the natural smoke and heat extraction system has been triggered.

Interaction of natural smoke and heat extraction and air-intake area

The effective surface area of the air-intake openings must be at least 1.5 times the aerodynamically effective opening surface of all natural smoke and heat extraction units located in a smoke zone.
To calculate the effective air-intake area for the following, the opening in the building's shell must be multiplied by a correction factor, C z.

Interaction of natural smoke and heat extraction and air-intake area

The air-intake area required can be reduced by up to 50 % if: - the fresh air enters horizontally close to the ground
- the upper edge of the air-intake opening is at least 2 metres from the edge of the smoke layer

- the smoke extraction area is increased by 50 %

It can be linearly interpolated.

Smoke removal via wall surfaces

When removing smoke via outer walls, the following should be observed:

- The Aw areas in Table 3 of DIN 18232-2 apply

- The surface area must be integrated into at least two opposing walls = double the surface area
- The natural smoke extraction units must be entirely in the smoke layer - The lower edge of the natural smoke extraction unit must be at least 0.5 metres above the lower border of the smoke layer - Sufficient air-intake surfaces (1.5 times the exhaust air) are necessary in the lower area of the outer wall to allow replacement air to flow in close to the floor; these also have to be doubled - The air-intake opening must be located at least 1 metre below the low-smoke layer

Smoke removal via wall surfaces

The control of NSHEV-systems:
- The NSHEVs are triggered by optical smoke detectors

- At least one smoke detector for every 80 m

- For wind speeds 1 m/s only the NSHEVs and air-intake surfaces on the leeward side are to be opened

- For wind speeds < 1 m/s all NSHEVs and air-intake surfaces are to be opened.

CE-Conformity

Test criteria
Initial testing: During the initial inspection for the CE certification the partial inspections are to carried out in the following order: 1. Determination of the aerodynamically effective opening surface 2. Reliability check 3. Functional test under load 4. Functional test at low temperature 5. Stability test under wind loading 6. Heat-exposure test Every partial inspection must be documented in a test report.

CE-conformity
Declaration of conformity:

As soon as a manufacturer has received the six inspection protocols required for a natural smoke and heat extractor, it can confirm the conformity of its product with DIN EN 12101 It is now allowed to affix the CE marking. It issues the declaration of conformity on its own authority. Appendix ZA of the standards specifies the information which must be included in the declaration of conformity and on the CE Marking. With the CE marking on the equipment and the declaration of conformity, the manufacturer or distributor confirms that its products comply with all EU directives under whose scope they fall. In doing so, it confirms in a legally binding manner that all requirements of DIN EN 12101 have been met.

1. Determination of the aerodynamically effective opening surface = Aa value

For NSHEVs the aerodynamically effective opening surface is determined either from the test results for natural smoke and heat extractors of various sizes or determined experimentally using scaled-down models.

The aerodynamically effective opening surface is the product of the geometrical opening surface and the flow rate coefficient. 2. Reliability check = RE A, RE 50, RE 1,000 The designations A, 50 and 1,000 indicate how often the NSHEV was opened without an external load during the initial inspection. The functional position must be reached within 60 seconds. In the case of natural smoke and heat extractors which are also used for ventilation purposes, this function is only to be checked after 10,000 ventilation cycles.

3. Functional test under load = SL A, SL 0, SL 125, SL 250, SL 500, SL 1,000

These designations indicate the test snow load in Pa (N/m2) with which the test was carried out.

4. Functional test at low temperature = TA, T(00), T(-5), T(-15), T(-25) These designations indicate the temperature in C at which the NSHEV was tested.
Test with the complete natural smoke and heat extractor: the complete NSHEV is checked for proper function in an environmental chamber at the relevant temperature.

5. Stability test under wind loading = WL A, WL 1,500, WL 3,000 These designations indicate the test load (wind suction load) in Pa applied during the test. The NSHEV must not open at the relevant wind load and must show no signs of permanent deformation.
After the test it must open within 60 seconds on actuation.

6. Heat-exposure test = B A, B 300, B 600

These designations indicate the temperature in C at which the NSHEV was tested.

Furthermore, according to DIN EN 12101-2 the NSHEV must possess at least one of the following actuation devices: a) A thermal trigger b) An actuation device which is triggered by an electrical signal from a remote sensor. e.g. smoke detector, temperature sensor c) A pneumatic trigger
d) A trigger which reacts to another signal

The manufacturer can define the test criteria (severity of the test) on its own.

Example: Functional reliability test (Re) Re 1,000 = 1,000 test cycles Re A = 0 test cycles Conclusion: A natural smoke extraction unit can have a CE marking although it was not even opened once during the inspection. That shows how leading manufacturers react about the new CE marking
