Theyre a Weird Mob, a ctional novel and a movie from the 1960s tells the story of a newly arrived Italian immigrant to Australia. The hardship, aussie slang, culture and racism were the many hurdles Nino Culotta faced as a New Australian. In his rst Australia Day speech Mayor Paul Tatchell recalled the tale at the celebrations and citizenship ceremony in Ballan on Sunday. Usually we hear some sort of political speech on these days, but I must reect on this story and how it relates to new immigrants arriving in this new land.
Young Citizen of the Year Jack Simmonds said he enjoyed what he does and loves the community of Blackwood whilst being fortunate to have been guided by his peers. Dr David Stewart accepted his Citizen of the Year award, reecting on the last 45 years. It is quite an honour and I love the area. Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Moorabool. I am thrilled I have brought up my family here, there are so many memories, he said. Full story and pictures page 6 and 7

By Jessica Howard Successful applicants at the recent Moorabool Shire community grants presentation plan to put their endowments to good use with the restoration of an Avenue of Honour, a Christmas Tree Farm and a weed eradication program. Yendon History Group received grants under two different categories that will be used to fund the WWI Dedication Service to be held in 2015 on 27th of April. For the past two years the group has been researching WWI soldiers who lived in or passed through Yendon. Kay Paton from the Yendon History Group says there were 59 or 60 men who came through Yendon at some point before the war, with 16 not making it back. There are currently nine oak trees that line the Avenue to commemorate the fallen soldiers and Ms Paton plans to plant seven more with plaques honouring all 16 men. This is something that Yendon can be proud of, and the kids who take part will remember this day for all their lives. As the kids grow up, so will the trees. Ms Paton said. The Avenue is expected to be fully refurbished by the time of the service. Finding Futures Ballarat is looking forward to a new instalment of sheds for their Dunnstown Christmas Tree Farm which will store tools and equipment and provide shelter when bad weather hits. This grant allows for a great opportunity to provide more employment opportunities for people who are disadvantaged and disabled, General Manager Michael Puddy said. Finding Futures will begin erecting the shed in early February and will be nished within a couple of weeks. There are two staff members from FF who manage the Christmas tree farm and through CentreCare employment, there are nine different people, ranging from late teens to early sixties, lending a hand. The Arts grant received by the Blackwood-Barrys Reef Landcare Group (BBRLG) will help create their newest mascot, Wilbur the Weed for a oat in the Easter Parade. The purpose of Wilbur will be to annually take part in the street parade at Easter, and when its not doing that it is going to be on display in the street as a constant reminder of the importance of weed eradication and control, said BBRLG president Shane Scanlan. The design is yet to be nalised, however it will be ready by the Easter Parade this year with help from the innovative artist and designer Matthew Harding. Matthew is a renowned designer and we are very lucky to have him on board, Mr Scanlan said

VILLAgE WORKS
Works have begun on the new alfresco dining area located on Main Street between Back to Bacchus and the ANZ Bank. These works will involve a full refurbishment of the forecourt and will result in a quality alfresco dining precinct facing on to Main St, with a newly expanded seating area for our customers. The contemporary design of this dining area will give the front of our centre a higher quality street presentation, and will offer all our customers an alternate, contemporary dining destination, whilst complementing the existing and new retailers in this area. It is anticipated these works will take approximately 6-8 weeks. Full customer access will continue to be available to the shops in the area.
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor Paul Tatchell. Photo Mick Davson I dont think any of the current councillors are that foolhardy. Its actually the third time theyve done it before theyre gone, because they get two warnings, and if they have that much disrespect for the area they represent, well I think the constituents will sort that out. Mayor Tatchell explained that there are other ways he can use to manage difcult situations in council

Bacchus Marsh SES volunteers manned the Driver Reviver Site beside the Western Highway near the Eastern Interchange last Sunday on Australia Day. Photos courtesy BMSES
By Jessica Howard Grabbing some spare change before answering a knock at the door this February could make all the difference for Bacchus Marshs State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers. This SES Unit is the only SES located within Moorabool Shire and responds to Emergencies such as Road Rescue, Storms, Floods, Search and Rescue, Lighting, also providing numerous support roles to other Emergency Service Organisations within the community. This year the annual door-knock commences on February 1 and will run throughout the month.
erations Bill Robson said he would much rather meet people at a Driver Reviver site and serve them with a free tea or coffee, than meet them at a car crash. Partial donations from the State Government this year have allowed the unit to purchase a new Light Rescue Truck. Donations from this years fundraisers will contribute toward this project as well as the purchase of equipment to stow on board. Even a bit of spare change makes a huge difference for a fully volunteer run organisation like the Bacchus Marsh SES, Mr Robson said.

A build up of dust and drizzle on a power pole is to blame for a power outage in Ballan and around the Pentland Hills and Myrniong area, last Monday 20 January, around 8am. It is believed the overnight build up allowed tracking of power to short out and ignite the pole, collapsing the top half that saw power lines fall across the Old Western Highway.

Patrick Collins and Sean Tysenn stayed at the Ballan Hotel on their fundraising walk from Melbourne to Ballarat last week.
Fortunately, a Powercor employee was travelling east bound to Melbourne on the Western Freeway and spotted the re on the pole. Myrniong Fire Brigade attended the scene promptly and put the re out. No injuries were reported and power was restored an hour later.
The power pole after the fire caused it to break off and drop wire across the Old Western Highway. Photos Leigh Macaulay.

Dear Editor, I wish to make a comment regarding the Ballan Structure Plan Consultation Feedback, as I put in a submission last October. In the published Attachment Submission Summary, Council Ofcers responded to the issues I raised. One issue in particular was as follows: Windfarm in near vicinity to the south of Ballan may impact desire for growth in the south as main street is only 3.5 kms from nearest turbine. Councils response reected a lack of knowledge of the permit conditions for the approved Moora-
Dear Editor, Approximately 17 years ago the Bacchus Marsh Returned & Services League received a donation of a Pack Howitzer Field Gun. Since then RSL executives over the years, have tried to nd a suitable home to display this item of Military memorabilia. During last year the Executives had many meetings with Councillors and Council Ofcers and late in the year, a suitable site was suggested, in front of the bollards between the Public Hall and the RSL. The Gun would be set on four concrete pads surrounded by a chain with planters on each corner with suitable easily maintained plants. When the above site was discussed, two Councillors and three Council ofcers were present and took part in the selection of the site. The proposal and the Pack Howitzer would be displayed as above together with an application for funding was put before council at the November meeting, but was put on hold until February. air-conditioning were fairly popular during the event. This brings me to the point of the use and promotion of solar energy. There is a perception out there that the people who can afford solar power are really only looking after themselves and instead of being thanked for installing their panels they are often being indirectly, and sometimes even directly, accused of increasing the price of electricity for those who cannot afford solar panels. While this is a tricky area and everyone is motivated by any number of forces there is a need to look at the accusations. In a recent study it has been shown that solar PV played a signicant role in slashing energy prices for the entire community during this very recent heat wave in South Australia and Victoria. This needs some explanation so here goes The following information is courtesy of the Australian Solar Council which you can visit on solar.org.au. According to the Australian Solar Council, during the recent heat event, electricity was generated by more than 350,000 privately owned PV systems installed in homes and businesses in South Australia and Victoria, which brought down demand, and added some capacity to the electricity network. Modelling released by the REC Agents Association (RAA) now shows that during periods of peak demand solar was contributing 606 MW to the grid in those two states. Why is that Important? It seems that electricity generators sell the energy they produce into the electricity market in half an hour blocks. This wholesale price uctuates according to demand. During periods of low demand it may sit at $0.03 per kilowatt hour. During peak demand however, it can rise as high as $13.10 per kilowatt hour. In similar conditions (in the lead up to Black Saturday) in January 2009 the average wholesale price in Victoria was $4.62 per kilowatt hour. That stands in stark contrast to the average wholesale price on the Thursday afternoon during the recent heat event of $0.51 per kilo-

Long Forest trainer Peter Thompson was successful with former South Australian 6-Y-0 Jet Laag/Bonnie Blair gelding So It Goes in the Crameri Rural & Hardware Pace for C0 class over 2190 metres at Maryborough on Monday January 20. Driven by daughter Kate Gath, So It Goes rst up in Victoria was restrained to the tail of the eld from outside the front row, before moving to be one/one through the middle stages. Taken to race in the open for the nal circuit, So It Goes outstayed his rivals to score by 17.6 metres in a rate of 2-01.2 over the pacemaker Shes Even Cooler and Stylish Ruler (one/one last lap).
It was Peter Thompson and Kate Gath again in the winners stall at Bendigo on Wednesday, when 5-Y-0 McArdle/Sokys Number mare Blue Seelster scored a narrow victory in the Alabar Bloodstock Pace for R2 to R4 class over 2150 metres. A prohibitive $1.30 favourite, Blue Seelster rst up since August was given a lovely passage from the pole trailing the leader Foldem (gate three), before easing away from the markers approaching the nal bend. Always looking to have the pacemaker covered, it took Blue Seelster all the way up the running to blouse Foldem by a nose in a tricky nish, with Thewingman (three back the markers) third. The mile rate 2-01.9.

Surging to the front prior to the home turn, Glenferrie EJ coasted to the wire six metres in advance of the favourite Clancys Fobwatch and Znana in 1-59.5.
At Cranbourne on Thursday, Coimadai trainer Steve Zammit combined with Rod Petroff to land the Hyland Sportswear Pace for C4 & C5 class over 2080 metres with ever reliable Weston Terror/Awesome Powers 6-Y-0 mare Gumdrops. Leading out from the pole, Gumdrops was eased to take a trail on the roughie Atomic Horizon, before using the sprint lane to gain the day in advance of Supliner (three wide last lap) and Atomic Horizon in a rate of 1-57.5. Kate Gath was to bring up a double after guiding husband Andys 7-Y-0 McArdle/Jubilee Franco gelding Franco Jackson to an all of the way victory in the Redpath Tyre & Battery Claiming Pace over 1690 metres. Always in control, Franco Jackson scored by 4.6 metres in advance of Johnny Tee (one/one three wide
It was the opening night of the much sought after rich Tontine Series for C2 to C4 class at Ararat on Wednesday and Parwan duo Craig Demmler (trainer) and Jodi Quinlan (driver) drew rst blood when highly promising four year old Art Major/ Maikona mare Glenferrie EJ scored over the 2195 metre trip, much to the delight of millionaire owner Peter Chambers racing under the banner of Glenferrie Farms Pty Ltd. ARIESMarch 21-April 20 This is a week for participation in community affairs. Watch out for charmers, particularly oozing salespeople. This is also the time to catch up on miscellaneous health needs and to clear family misunderstandings. TAURUSApril 21-May 22 Changes are happening within the home, but things stay even on the outside world. This is the time to resume a project that was recently dropped. Watch out for that lazy streak. GEMINIMay 23-June 21 This is the week to figure out that puzzling solution. You are super analytical now, so put this talent to maximum use. This can be an entertaining week, but dont let moody people put you in a spot.
This could be a tiring week so how about some rejuvenating type activities. Love is on the upswing, but you must push the swing a little. This is a good time for sharing things with a fellow Virgo. LIBRASeptember 23-October 22 Travel is indicated around the weekend and financial gains are highlighted starting Thursday. Be less secretive with loved ones and be more involved with family activities. SCORPIOOctober 23-November 21 Your creative juices are perking, so get on with a pet project. Some friction with relatives can get you down over the weekend. Children shock you, but amuse as well. SAGITTARIUSNovember 22-December 22 Knowledge is the weeks theme. You will be learning from books and the internet as well as from life. Give your mate generous doses of encouragement. Play hunches all week. CAPRICORNDecember 23-January 20 Paperwork piles up through the week and super-organization is a must. This is a great time to involve yourself in a charitable project. A surprise visitor can make your week. AQUARIUSJanuary 21-February 19 Make thrift the weeks byword. There is no harm in being a miser right now. Pets can be in the picture. Relatives can bother you with their aches and pains. PISCESFebruary 20-March 20 Check out the fine print and let nothing sort itself out you have to be in control. This is a good time to plan that trip you were thinking about. Check out any problems with balance. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are a born leader and naturally aggressive. You are ready to take charge in any crisis - but perhaps you look forward to a challenge a little too much. This year should be an improvement on the previous one.

A great time to send a letter to the editor. VIRGOAugust 23-September 22 This could be a tiring week so how about some rejuvenating type activities.
