LETTER
from the team

Change is in the air

It was the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus who first said that change is the only thing that stays constant in life. On the surface, that statement seems easy enough to understand. Think of the seasons: Fall gives way to winter; winter gives way to spring. School lets out for summer; school starts up in fall. Things are always changing, but we have our rituals and traditions associated with different times of the year. Those things stay the same. Or do they? Now that the holidays are over and the quiet of winter has set in, we have time to reflect on the flurry of activity behind us. Against the backdrop of our yearly traditions, its easy to see how this year has been different from those past. Loved ones have gotten older. Some are no longer with us. Children have grown. Friends have moved on. Some relationships have soured. Others have strengthened. In so many ways, this year has been unique. And next year, many of these things will have changed. As much as we often want things to stay the same, nothing ever does. While this thought might be bittersweet, it also lends a very great importance to the present moment. What you have now you wont have forever. So if its good, we urge you to take the time to appreciate it. Dont put off the little things. If you have an old friend youve been meaning to contact, do it now. If you have a relative in assisted living, visit her today. Send your old classmate an email. Tell your kids you love them. Kiss your spouse. Call your mother. And if 2014 has gotten off to a rough start for you, remember that these difficult times cannot last forever. For better or for worse, nothing does. With that in mind, we hope youll also take the time to appreciate the many insights presented in this months issue. Sierra Pope Muoz and Brenna Holzhauer share a different way of looking at

snowy winter landscapes. Dr. Amy Sergeant discusses the importance of starting your children on good dental habits early. Jack Erb offers thoughts on the importance of believing in yourself. And of course, there are many more, so enjoy! And if the cold February winds have you feeling like winter is here to stay forever, remember that change is just around the corner. In health and happiness, All of us at Natures Pathways

Prevention is the key

By Kimberly Maahs

ccording to the American Veterinary Dental College, By three years of age most dogs and cats have some evidence of periodontal disease. February is National Pet Dental Health Month, and its no wonder that each year a whole month is dedicated to bringing this disease, its causes and preventions to light.

Being proactive is the key to preventing dental disease and it involves only a few simple things: Brush your pets teeth. Feed a species-appropriate diet including raw bone. Provide your pet with something to chew on regularly.

Brushing your pets teeth can be a daunting task but if you start slow, youre likely to be more successful. Give your pet a chance to get used to the idea; dont just come at him one day with a toothbrush and stick it in his mouth. Instead, progress over a period of days or even weeks. Start slow by just allowing your pet to get used to having your finger in his mouth. Gently massage his gums and slowly make contact with all of his teeth. Keep the sessions short and give lots of positive reinforcement. Once your pet is used to having your finger in his mouth, try using a damp piece of gauze or small piece of cloth and wipe off his teeth. When your pet is comfortable with that then add natural dog toothpaste or gel to the gauze. Eventually, you can switch to a toothbrush meant for dogs or a finger brush and use that in lieu of the gauze. If you can discipline yourself to brush your pets teeth every day, that is ideal, but even three to four times a week is beneficial. One thing rarely discussed is the importance diet can play in your pets oral hygiene. If youve ever researched dental care and pets, you will have ultimately come across the long-standing myth that dry food cleans your pets teeth. The pet food companies have been extremely
www.naturespathways.com

According to a recent article in Dogs Naturally Magazine, The fact is that all kibbles, regardless of advertised benets to the contrary, cause dental disease in dogs.
successful at perpetuating this myth. Even today, its validity is rarely questioned by pet owners and many veterinarians. Dry pet food doesnt remove plaque and tartar from your pets teeth. That would be like you and I never brushing our teeth again and just eating crunchy cereal or granola to clean our teeth. Pretty ridiculous huh? According to a recent article in Dogs Naturally Magazine, The fact is that all kibbles, regardless of advertised benefits to the contrary, cause dental disease in dogs. Dry pet food is primarily made up of some type of starch, albeit grains, potatoes or peas. Its what holds the kibble together and its unavoidable. These starches are eventually converted to sugar that feeds the oral bacteria in your pets mouth. An environment full of bacteria promotes plaque. A better solution is a species-appropriate diet of fresh meats, ground bone and small amounts of vegetables and fruit. According to Dr. Karen Becker, DVM, A fresh food diet provides live enzymes that help break down plaque and tartar on the teeth. The raw ground bone acts like a gentle abrasive cleaner when chewed, similar to fine sandpaper, removing debris stuck on teeth. Another important aspect of a fresh food diet is that it wont stick to your pets teeth like a dry kibble diet will. In addition to a species-appropriate diet and brushing your pets teeth, providing raw meaty bones like chicken backs, necks or wings to chew on can be very beneficial. According to Dr. Jodie Gruenstern, DVM,
www.naturespathways.com

of Animal Doctor in Muskego, Raw bones are the only natural product that can actually remove tartar. It is the shearing action of a dog chewing on a raw bone that removes the tartar from his teeth. You can contact your holistic veterinarian to help you select the appropriate type of raw bones to introduce into your pets diet. Try incorporating these changes into your pets lifestyle and youll find you wont be paying for expensive dental cleanings

nearly as much and your pets teeth will be brighter and healthier!

Cant lose fat in a desired area?

By Angela Rahm

hen you eat healthily and exercise regularly, why is it you cant lose fat? Having too much fat is not only uncomfortable and undesirable, it is also unhealthy. On a day-to-day basis, the human body

is constantly storing excess calorie intake from our diets into adipose tissue for future use. When stimulated, signals from the brain cause the contents of these cells to be released.

The contents are then metabolized to provide energy to the bodys tissues. In essence, the adipose cells act as rechargeable batteries: sometimes being charged up and sometimes being depleted, depending on a persons diet and exercise. When we exercise, we create a demand for extra energy in the bodys tissues and normally the body responds by releasing that stored fat from the adipose tissue. Unfortunately, many people cannot burn excess calories due to genetics and environmental factors, leaving them frustrated and unhappy about their size. As a nation, we have seen our midsection increase dramatically over the years. With an increase in stress, lack of exercise, environmental toxins, dependency on medications and a diet of processed and fast-food options, the obesity rate has reached an all-time high. The increase in our midsection has many health risks. Unfortunately, 2 out of 3 people in the U.S. are overweight and 1 out of 3 is obese. Carrying extra inches around your midsection has been repeatedly shown to increase cardiovascular health risks. Your waist size is also a powerful indicator of insulin sensitivity, as studies

clearly show that measuring your waist size is one of the most powerful ways to predict your risk for diabetes. A simple method to figure out if you have a weight problem is to measure your waist circumference (the distance around the smallest area below the rib cage and above your belly button). Waist circumference is the easiest anthropometric measure of total body fat. Losing weight off the middle section requires a dedicated exercise routine, a clean diet including portion control and reduction of carbohydrates, reducing stressors in your life, and drinking plenty of clean water daily to help support a healthy lymphatic system. For now, experts stress that lifestyle, especially exercise, is the very best way to fight visceral fat. If you struggle to lose unwanted fat around your midsection or any other area of your body, Laser Lipo may be right for you. It is an alternative to liposuction, which is traditionally expensive, invasive and has a fair amount of downtime. Laser Lipo technology, like anything, varies in results, comfort and price. Laser Lipo is relatively new to the United States. Only since 2012 has this treatment been offered in the United States. Here are some questions you will want to ask prior to scheduling a session with any business offering Laser Lipo: 1. How long is each treatment?

2. Is there downtime? 3. Is the treatment FDA-approved? 4. Is the equipment a Class 3B medical device? 5. Are the treatments pain-free, 6. How many sessions will it take before I 7. How long will my results last? 8. What is the cost per session and does the

business offer packages?

If you struggle to lose fat in a targeted area, Laser Lipo could very well be your solution.

arasites. That word can send chills down anyones back. Intestinal worms. Fleas. Ticks. Unemployed brothers-inlaw. Veterinarians cant help much with the last item, but they are able to help protect your pet against the others. Roundworms (toxacara), also knows as ascarids, are the most common intestinal worm in dogs and cats. These worms look like spaghetti (sorry!) and average about 5 inches in length. Puppies are almost always born with roundworms because the larvae can pass through the placenta. Both kittens and puppies become infected from larvae that have migrated into the mothers milk. Roundworms can cause unthriftiness and even death in young animals, so all puppies and kittens need to be dewormed at least three times to kill the adult worms in the intestines. Dogs and cats are also infected by ingesting eggs from the feces of infected animals or from the tissues of intermediate hosts, including rodents, earthworms, birds and cockroaches. Even indoor-only cats can get roundworms!

Roundworms are zoonotic parasites, meaning they can infect humans as well. Children are at particular risk because cats and raccoons often use sandboxes as toilets. Roundworm eggs can be found there even if no feces are seen. When humans become infected, the eggs hatch and the larvae migrate through various tissues in the body, including the liver, lungs and eyes, causing damage. This is called larval migrans. There have been as many as 10,000 cases of roundworm infection in humans in the United States reported in one year. Hookworms (ancylostoma) are also zoonotic, but not as prevalent as roundworms. They are only inch long smaller than a penny and very narrow. They have hook-like mouthparts that attach to the intestinal wall and suck large amounts of blood, which can lead to anemia. These worms are passed on to puppies while they are still in the womb and then later through the mothers milk. The worms also infect your pet through ingestion of the larvae from a contaminated environment, from larval penetration of the skin, and/or from eating infected rodents or other vertebrates. Dogs and cats may become infected from eating cockroaches that contain infective larvae. Hookworms dont actually infect humans, but the larvae can burrow into human skin. This causes itching, but the worms dont mature into adults. Very rarely, the larvae will penetrate into deeper tissues and partially mature in the human intestine. Whipworms (trichuris) are another intestinal worm seen in veterinary medicine. They are about 2 to 3 inches long with a thin, whip-like front end and a thicker back end. Whipworms only infect dogs, foxes, and coyotes. Dogs become infected from ingesting eggs from the environment. Many whipworm infections are either asymptomatic or subclinical, so a dog can pass a lot of eggs without showing any symptoms. Whipworm eggs can survive outdoors for years, making it difficult to eradicate the disease. Some infections result in diarrhea that is streaked with mucus and fresh blood.
www.naturespathways.com

Severe infections result in bloody diarrhea, weight loss, dehydration, anemia, and in the most extreme cases, death. Whipworm infections can mimic Addisons disease (hypoadrenocorticism), which is very serious. If your veterinarian is concerned about Addisons, it is worthwhile to treat for whipworms first. Tapeworms are flat, white worms. The worm is made up of many small segments, which break off and pass into the stool or can be seen crawling near the anus. When dry, the segments look like grains of rice. Tapeworms have to pass through another host, such as a flea or a rodent, in order to become infective. For the most part, tapeworms are more gross than harmful to your pet. In large numbers they can cause weight loss and sometimes can cause scooting if the segments irritate the skin around the anus. All dogs and cats should be tested and/or treated for intestinal worms at least yearly. Almost all heartworm preventatives treat roundworms, but not necessarily hookworms or whipworms. Indooronly cats can get worms too, so they should be seen and dewormed yearly too. Cleaning up your pets stool promptly, washing your hands and litter boxes frequently, using flea and tick preventatives, and routinely deworming your pet are all important ways to keep your furry friends and your human family members happy and healthy!

What is Reconnective Healing?

By Peggy Bong

econnective Healing is a form of healing that is here on the planet for the very first time. It is able to reconnect us to the universe and to our very essence. The reality of its existence has demonstrated itself clearly in practice as well as in science laboratories. These evolutionary frequencies are of a new bandwidth brought in via a spectrum of light and information, which allows Reconnective Healing to take place. This is something new that can be trained in each of us.

Is there science behind this discovery?

It is known internationally as Reconnective Healing, a remarkable new transformative paradigm in healing. Its the cutting edge of what researchers are calling information medicine, scientifically documented frequencies that are often credited with bringing about a state of restored health. Stanford Professor Emeritus William Tiller states that when information carried through these frequencies is introduced, it creates coherence and order. The result: dramatic reports of regeneration instead of degeneration.

How did Eric Pearl discover Reconnective Healing?

How does the healing happen?

As a doctor, Eric ran a highly successful chiropractic practice for 12 years until one day when patients began reporting that they felt his hands on them, even though he hadnt physically touched them. Patients soon reported seeing angels and receiving healing from cancers, AIDS-related diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, birth disfigurements, cerebral palsy and other serious afflictions. All this occurred when Eric simply held his hands near them. And to this day, it continues.

These bandwidths of healing frequencies comprised of light and information appear to innately know what the body needs to restore balance and well-being. You are returned to an optimal and appropriate state of balance merely by experiencing or interacting with this healing continuum. The trained Reconnective Healing practitioner simply facilitates the process. By feeling the frequencies and interacting with them, which appears as if the healer is stretching taffy in the air, physical and emotional health shifts may appear, oftentimes instantaneously. The practitioner can see the impact on the person receiving Reconnective Healing as the persons closed eyes may flutter and begin to rapidly dart back and forth. Fingers or feet may move as if of their own volition. Even involuntary muscles of the face move in a way that couldnt happen intentionally. All this occurs even though the practitioner isnt touching the client! These involuntary body movements, referred to as registers, are a demonstration that the client has entered into a state where healing can occur. The information-laden frequencies reconnect us to our original fullness as human beings and seemingly restore us to a more complete connection with the universe.1

Will I experience a spontaneous healing?

times your body, mind and spirit need time to accept the healing, which results in an unfoldment over time as you become attuned to the frequencies that bring us back to our true nature, balance and harmony on every level. If youre lucky, your healing will come in the form you anticipate. If youre really lucky, your healing will come in a form youve not even dreamed of one that the universe specifically has in mind for you. Amazing lentils
By Debi Morton

hen Februarys winter cold drives us inside, we want comfort foods. Beans, stews and soups can soften winters bite after fun in the snow, not feeling so well or just working hard. And the amazing lentil can be ready in no time compared to other beans. A lentil soup, stew or side is fast, easy to make, flavorful and always consoling. Lentils create a great base for meats, can stand on their own or be a refreshing salad served cold. And lentils are a great source of protein!

History

As a food crop, lentils date to prehistoric times. Archeological evidence in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic layers of Franchthi Cave in Greece shows they were eaten 13,000 to 9,500 years ago. Lentils are associated with the prehistoric Old World agricultural revolution and were domesticated with einkorn and emmer wheats, barley, pea, and flax.

In Pakistan, lentils are often consumed with roti bread or rice. In India, lentils soaked in water and sprouted lentils are offered to gods in many temples. It is also a practice in south India to give and receive sprouted peas by women who perform varalakshmi vratam. It is considered to be one of the best foods because cooking does not alter the internal chemical structures. In Italy, eating lentils on New Years Eve traditionally symbolizes the hope for a prosperous new year. In Shia narrations, it is said that 70 prophets, including Jesus and Mohammed, blessed lentils. The Palouse region in Pullman, Wash., grows one-third of all the lentils in the United States, and hosts an annual lentil festival, according to the festivals website.

Cultural uses

Lentils are mentioned many times in the Hebrew Bible, the first time recounting the incident in which Jacob purchases the birthright from Esau with stewed lentils. Ancient Persians consumed lentils daily in the form of a stew poured over rice. Currently, Ethiopians make a stew-like dish called kik, which is eaten with injera flat bread. Yellow lentils are used to make a non-spicy stew and are among the first solid foods Ethiopian women feed their babies.

Heart-healthy lentils reduce inflammation in the body while providing a steady stream of energy. Lentils also provide enough nutrition to satisfy the daily recommended amount of folate, vitamin B, iron and minerals such as phosphorous and manganese. With about 30 percent of calories from protein, lentils have the third-highest level of protein by weight of any legume or nut, after soybeans and hemp.

Every child deserves a healthy smile

By Amy Sergeant, D.D.S.

ach February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Childrens Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health for children. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get

a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Visit www.ada.org/5578.aspx for more information. Tooth decay affects more children in the United States than any other chronic infectious disease. By kindergarten age, more than 40 percent of kids have tooth decay. It

can lead to pain and infection that impacts eating, speech and learning. Fortunately, tooth decay is preventable. Here is a list of oral health problems in children:

Baby bottle decay/sippy cup use

One of the risk factors for early childhood is frequent and prolonged exposure of a babys teeth to sugary liquids, such as fruit juice, milk or formula.

Thumb/lip sucking

DRS. HILL, SERGEANT AND BATCHELOR

Its normal and healthy for infants to suck their thumbs, lips, fingers, pacifiers or toys. If sucking continues beyond the age of 5, when the permanent teeth begin to come in, dental problems can occur. Depending on the frequency and intensity, the teeth can be pushed out of alignment, causing them to protrude and create an overbite. Your child may develop a speech problem, a misaligned jaw or a malformed roof of the mouth.

Early tooth loss

General and Family Dentistry

If teeth are lost before the permanent teeth come in, the nearby teeth can tip or shift. When a permanent tooth tries to emerge into its space, there may not be enough

room. The new tooth may emerge tilted. This is why treating and restoring primary teeth is so important, as is maintaining the space if they are prematurely lost. Crooked or misaligned teeth can cause a range of problems, from interfering with proper chewing to causing temporomandibular joint problems (TMJ disorder). How you can protect your childs oral health: allows clean teeth to re-mineralize. Flossing should begin when two teeth touch each other.

Stand rm on oral hygiene

Avoid baby bottle decay and control the sippy cup habit

Start oral care early

Your child should see a dentist by the time she or he is a year old, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Teach the brush-and-oss habit

To help prevent tooth decay, provide plain water or a pacifier during the day, rather than bottles or sippy cups filled with sugary drinks or milk. Dont put your baby to bed with a bottle. If you are nursing, remove your breast once your baby falls asleep and dont allow them to nurse continually. Teach your baby to drink from a cup by his/her first birthday.

Let your children know they dont have a choice about taking care of their teeth and gums. Some tips to getting past the crankiness and difficulty of reluctant brushers and flossers, or for children too young to do it themselves, include: Plan to help your children longer than you may think necessary. Children dont have the fine motor skills to brush their own teeth until about age 6 or the flossing skills until about age 10. Schedule the brushing and flossing at times when your child is not overly tired. Get your child involved in a way thats age-appropriate. For instance, let your child pick his own toothpaste at the store from options you approve. Figure out what motivates your child. Many gladly brush for a sticker or to complete a chore chart.

Tooth brushing is crucial from the start. Even before your baby has teeth, you can gently brush the gums, using water on a soft baby toothbrush, or clean them with a soft washcloth. Once there are additional teeth, buy infant toothbrushes that are very soft. Brushing should be done twice daily, especially before bedtime, because it

Why you should ditch the treadmill

By Jade Bunk, HHC, SFG

or decades, weve been told that to lose weight and tone up, we need to do cardio and lots of it. Weve been told that to lose weight, we need to run, or jog the more the better. But have you ever noticed how most folks who spend those hours upon hours on the treadmill dont ever seem to get trim? Maybe youve experienced this yourself spending hours doing cardio but not losing any weight, or worse, slowly gaining it. Luckily, science has caught on, and we now know that steady-state cardio is not the best way to fat loss. Steady-state cardio think running, cycling or using an elliptical machine at the same pace for the bulk of your workout causes your body to adapt to conserve as much fat as possible. Like it or not, our bodies are built to survive, not perform repetitive tasks that we think should be producing some certain result. When you perform long bouts of steady exercise, your body is getting the signal that it better conserve fuel (fat) and it adjusts to compensate for the energy expenditure. This is great for survival, but detrimental to fat-loss goals, as your body adjusts by lowering your thyroid hormone production, thus lowering your metabolism to save energy. You run into real problems after regular bouts of steady-state exercise. Your body sets in motion a series of reactions that make it difficult to burn fat at all, including consistently low thyroid production. Your fat cells stop releasing fat the way they once did, and energy use from fat decreases by 30 percent. These reactions also trigger muscle loss and bone density loss. You might lose some weight, but it is not the type of weight you want to lose! So what should you do instead? Most people who exercise regularly do so about four hours per week. For optimal fat loss, we want to affect what happens the other 164 hours as much as possible. Resistance training and high intensity intervals can do this by raising your metabolism, causing your body to produce more energy (i.e. burn more calories) outside of the gym. Many studies have shown that people who do high intensity interval
Natures Pathways | February 2014

training (HIIT) consistently lose significantly more body fat than their steady-state training counterparts. Research has also confirmed that HIIT enhances the metabolism in muscle cells, promoting fat burning and shutting down fat production. A study done at Laval University discovered that in the subjects doing HIIT, muscle fibers had significantly higher markers for fat oxidation (fat burning) than the steady-state exercise group. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology reported that subjects who performed HIIT workouts experienced a 30-percent increase in both fat oxidation and levels of muscle enzymes that enhance fat oxidation. Even more promising, a Norwegian University of Science and Technology study was done on subjects with metabolic syndrome, a combination of medical disorders that increases ones risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Subjects who followed an HIIT program had a 100-percent greater decrease in fat-producing enzymes compared to subjects who followed a program of steady-state training. Steady-state cardio can be great for stress relief and can be suitable as a reintroduction to physical activity. But if one of your goals is fat loss, or prevention of age-related fat gain, high intensity interval training is a much better choice. If you love running long distances, go for it, but try to include interval-based training in your exercise regime.

Forgiveness
By Don Neviaser

racticing forgiveness is a two-tiered path to inner peace that can diminish or eliminate unnecessary emotional drains in your life. One level lies in the ability to forgive others, thus allowing you to move beyond any lingering negative feelings that may be clouding your vision of them or your relationship with them. Granted, there are many transgressions that are simply unforgivable, but here I am primarily referring to those relatively minor injustices, both real and imagined, that may still tarry in your heart without closure: excessive emotional taxes unnecessarily diminishing your limited energy supply. Let there be no mistake, even if relatively small, a drain is still a drain. The second tier of forgiveness exists on a far more personal level and can be an even bigger drain of your life force. Though it is important to forgive others, it is equally, if not more important, to be willing and able to forgive yourself. Most of us have known past indiscretions, failures or the fallout of bad decisions, some of which may have negatively impacted your life or the lives of others. Unfortunately, many regrettable results can occur when stretching the boundaries of freedom and interactive norms, or as part of the learning process in challenging yourself. Factors such as overzealously stretching limitations, striving for a goal ill-prepared or experiencing unexpected changes or differences with others can all impact boldness and pursuits that may otherwise have led to great personal or business successes. Then again, nobodys perfect. There are times when simply bad decisions were made that had detrimental consequences to others or yourself, with end results that need to be acknowledged and rectified if possible. Keep in mind that doing so would be as much for your personal and professional benefit as anyones. However, if you have already done so, honestly and sincerely, and if you are truly remorseful and nothing else can be done, give yourself the freedom to just let it go so you can begin focusing your time and energy on more positive and beneficial endeavors, actions and interactions to help further cement your self-respect, inner peace and connections with others.

Powerful meditation for positive change

By Donna Sereda
t seems that meditation has gained such popularity recently that it pops up all over the place. New scientific research has revealed that this thousands-of-yearsold practice has benefits both as an effective way to relieve stress and as a way to increase your sense of well-being and happiness. What if meditation could radically change your life in a positive way? Meditation in its most basic form starts with the simple practice of meditating on the breath. This method clears and focuses the mind and relaxes the body. Sitting in a comfortable position (either on a cushion or in a chair) with a straight but relaxed back,

Peace is Possible

you begin by mentally scanning through your body to relax any areas of tension. Then, your attention shifts to the sensation of your breath as it enters and leaves your nostrils. When distracting thoughts arise, just gently let them fall away and return to focusing on your breath, maintaining alert concentration for as long as possible. Meditating in this way will produce many wonderful physical and mental benefits. But meditation practice can do much more. It can also help us solve many of our daily problems. Practitioners of Kadampa Buddhism (a type of Mahayana Buddhism) use

breathing meditation in addition to practicing meditation on the Kadam Lamrim, or all of Buddha Shakyamunis teachings (Dharma) condensed into 21 steps. This powerful practice can help us overcome difficulties, improve relationships and increase our inner peace and happiness. This type of meditation begins by listening to or reading a Dharma teaching. The meditation practice itself has two main parts. The first part, contemplation, involves thinking deeply about the teaching and reaching some conclusion about it. The second part, meditation, advances to a single-pointed focus on the conclusion of the contemplation. By mixing your mind completely with a virtuous thought or feeling, you can gain both the physical and mental benefits of meditation and also transform yourself on a deep spiritual level. For example, most people have experienced anger and its negativity. Buddha gave many teachings on the destructive faults of anger and on the great benefits of its antidote, the practice of patience. We usually completely forget about patience in the heat of the moment, but meditation on patience helps strengthen our ability to maintain a peaceful mind in all sorts of circumstances. Begin with the simple breathing meditation to quiet your mind. Then, think about Buddhas teaching and recall the many disadvantages of anger. Recall an experience when anger arose in your mind or when someone got angry with you. How did it feel?

What is your rhythm?

By Dr. Joanne Flanagan
ur lives are governed by the clock. We eat, sleep, exercise, work, play and do everything else according to a time schedule imposed on us by our environment, family, friends, hours that stores are open, etc. For most of us, such strict adherence to the time of the day may create an incredible amount of stress and drain our energy. Each individuals energy peaks occur at different times. Everyone knows a morning person someone who wakes up cheery and very energetic. Everyone also knows an evening person someone who can hardly get out of bed in the morning and tends to be sluggish for the first several hours of the day. The tables turn late in the evening: Morning people can barely keep their eyes open, while evening people are full of energy. Whether you are a morning person or an evening person is determined by your internal biological clock, called your circadian rhythm. These rhythms derive from a complex system of internal pacemakers that regulate the timing of hundreds of biological behaviors and processes, including the sleep/wake cycle, growth, cell division, strength, moods and actions. They also affect our susceptibility to stress and illness. The scientific study of these biological rhythms is called chronobiology. To become aware of your individual rhythms, answer these questions: Are you a day or night person? Do you have more energy at a particular time of the day? Does food taste better later in the day? Do you feel an energy drain in the early afternoon?

Do you think and remem-

Does your sex drive feel stronger at a certain time of day? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have an awareness of your biological rhythms. By mastering these rhythms, you can reach your

The prairie has much to teach us

By Ann Moyer
he prairie has much to teach us. During these winter months, prairie plants experience an important period of dormancy. With spring will come a rush of new growth, but first the prairie rests, gathering strength, while nature lies in a deep freeze. For human beings, winter with its longer nights and shorter days can be a time for slowing down and going deeper into an inner landscape to feed our souls. Winter is a wonderful opportunity to give yourself time for quiet and solitude, for a retreat, for opening up to possibilities that may lie ahead, or simply for time to do nothing. A number of restored prairie lands surround us in the Madison area. Restoration of native species provides spaces with unique beauty, a balm for souls, and healing and care for the natural environment, especially our precious lakes. Prairie plants, with their deep roots, reduce storm water runoff, recharge groundwater and improve the quality of the water that reaches our lakes. Brenda Lisenby, a recent transplant from Hong Kong, lives on and helps to maintain one of these tracts of prairie land in Middleton. Her first experiences with these prairie lands give us a vision about the new growth ahead natures response to fallow time: When I arrived, I was amazed at the variety of flowers in the prairie purple, white, pink, orange and so many different kinds of yellow! The beauty of the prairie flowers was a part of my morning walk. Then I noticed more each day with the passing of summer the sweet, clean smell of the prairie! I hadnt realized that prairies smell. Walking the trails through the tall grass had at first been just a visual delight, but now with the awareness of the scent of the prairie, I experienced the beauty of the prairie more deeply. Finally, I heard the prairie. One day, while collecting rattlesnake master, cinquefoil and echinacea seeds, I walked deep into the grass on the north prairie. Although I was one of a group of volunteers collecting seed, we had all gone in different directions with our buckets, clippers and gloves.
24
Natures Pathways | February 2014

I was alone in the prairie, surrounded by the tall sweet grass. I paused to take in the moment and became aware of the sound of the prairie. Crickets! I heard the occasional lone cricket sound nearby, but what I became aware of was the symphony of chirping that was arising from the prairie. It washed over me. Now I experience the prairie not only with my eyes, but with all my senses. I have learned its scent, its sound and its feel. And I am excited to know that the work of my hands in collecting seed will be used to restore even more prairie. As you feel your body slowing down in these winter months, remember the lesson of the prairie. Developing deep roots, taking time to slow down, letting some issues in your life lie fallow for a time and giving rest to your body are all important steps for new growth. And remember even here in Wisconsin, spring and summer really are just around the corner!

POWERFUL MEDITATION FOR POSITIVE CHANGE continued from page 22

WHAT IS YOUR RHYTHM? continued from page 23

Dont dwell on the feeling or become absorbed by the negativity. Rather, just recognize it then proceed to think about all the many benefits of practicing patience. Think about feeling patient or of others showing patience towards you. As the contemplation proceeds, a natural conclusion will come to mind, perhaps something like, I really dont want to get angry anymore. It makes me feel terrible. From now on, Ill watch for anger rising up in my mind and practice patience instead! Then, try to single-pointedly mix your mind with this thought for the rest of the meditation. Other thoughts will almost certainly drift into your consciousness. Once you realize youve strayed away from the focus of your meditation, just lightly return to your concentration on patience. With repeated meditation on patience youll notice a real transformation. Youll become better at keeping calm in situations that previously would make you feel angry. Gradually, your relationships with others will begin to reflect this change. Buddhas teachings regarding developing patience, compassion and wisdom work for everyone, Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike. And, by putting those teachings into practice, you can make meaningful positive changes leading to a happy, peaceful mind.

daily potential with less stress and achieve peak performance. Approximately 20 percent of the population falls into either extreme category. Most people are either moderate morning or evening types, while others are neutral in relation to their circadian rhythms (from Latin circa dias, about a day). This biological clock is characterized by the 24-hour day. Scientists have discovered that each of us has distinct biological rhythms programmed into our genes. Unfortunately, there is little one can do to change some of the physiological aspects of this. Circadian rhythms behave like an oscillator, causing daily fluctuations, with each cycle lasting a different amount of time. Consider these suggestions to best cope: Adjust your physical and mental limits according to how you feel. Schedule the most challenging tasks for times when you have the most energy. Wear an Equilibrex Pendant, or keep one in your pocket, to increase your resistance to stress.

sed clothing can be incorporated into any wardrobe, no matter a persons profession, stage of life, economic status or area of residence. Not only can used clothing supplement any fashion-forward wardrobe, but by seeking out gently used clothing, a person is making a huge impact on sustaining the earths resources. According to The Huffington Post, it takes an average of 1,800 gallons of water to grow enough cotton for one pair of jeans. This water consumption doesnt even include the amount used to dye, treat and process the fabric for the final product. The average American owns between eight and 11 pairs of jeans. Just this one style of clothing can strain our water resources. This statistic doesnt include the water consumption of other fashion items in our closets, such as cotton T-shirts or synthetic styles that use water for processing. In addition, all new clothing has a huge carbon footprint due to the production and shipping of raw goods as well as the final product. This consumption can be alleviated in your own closet by making a commitment to purchase used garments for some or most of your fashion needs.

Being fashionable is a top priority for many women for a variety of reasons, such as career choice, self-expression, image and fit. Women can honor their fashion sense while maintaining a gentle approach to using the earths resources by committing to incorporate used garments into their wardrobes. In fact, women can add a one-of-akind flair to their fashion selection while shopping for used garments. Used garments are available in many different venues, such as thrift stores, yard sales, vintage shops and the growing trend of swapping items with family, friends or community members. Although committing to wearing used clothing requires an alternative approach toward shopping, it can be achieved by following a few easy tips. The key to incorporating used trends with an existing wardrobe is to have a core set of basic items, such as black trousers, straightleg jeans, a white dress shirt, the little black dress, a wool coat or trench, and basics such as neutral camisoles. With a collection of these classic items, its simple to purchase trendy items from used garment stores to layer with the basic items. When setting out to shop for used garments, its always helpful to have a sense of personal style that compliments career and lifestyle. If youre uncertain, its easy to gain inspiration from magazines, Pinterest and even co-workers. This will help you fine-tune your personal style and home in on specific items to seek while thrift shopping. This is usually a good time to take stock of what is in your closet so you have an understanding of your fashion needs and wants. While taking inventory of your current wardrobe, you can clean out unwanted items to donate at the venue you shop at. Going through your closet will help you understand what you want to suit your fashion needs for work, weekend and special occasions. Having a wish list of items to add to your wardrobe will help you stay focused in thrift stores that often can feel overwhelming due to cluttered racks that display an overabundance of trends. Choose one or two thrift stores to shop at in order to maintain a focused shopping experience. Arrive with a list of what you want, a reminder of favorite colors, prints or patterns, and your size preference as most stores organize their assortments accordingly. Be sure to try on all garments and only purchase items you know you will wear. An additional perk to shopping for used garments is that you can take more risk with your fashion sense because prices are lower on used garments. So dont be afraid to purchase one or two items that may seem risky for your personal style. Adding trendy fashion items to your wardrobe can be easy and enjoyable if you follow a few simple standards. Not only is it rewarding to find items that compliment your fashion sense, but it helps alleviate the burden that new fashion items have on the earths resources. Taking all this into consideration while shopping for used garments can create a fashionable wardrobe while sustaining our resources.

What is a neurological exam?

(Part two)
By Dr. Steve Puckette
neurological exam helps locate areas of imbalance in your body. Part one of this article appeared in the December issue of Natures Pathways magazine and explained what to expect in the first half of a neurological exam. The December article discussed why and how I assess the function of your peripheral nerves, or nerves to your extremities, and that of your cerebellum, the part of your brain that coordinates movements.

The next part of the exam assesses the function of your cranial nerves. These nerves, along with the nerves that control all of your organs and internal functions (liver, heart, blood sugar levels, gallbladder, digestion, hormones, etc.) are housed in your brain stem. Finding a weakness in one of your cranial nerves may indicate a weakness in your brain stem, which may impact any/all of the other nerves related to your internal and organ functions. So I use very specific tests to determine how well your brain is functioning.

Lets take a minute to briefly overview the different cranial nerves, their job and how they are assessed. In all cases I look to see that your left and right sides respond equally. No. 1 controls your sense of smell. No. 2 controls vision, and Nos. 3, 4 and 6 are all related to eye movements. This information was covered in the discussion about eye tracking in part one of this article. No. 5 controls facial sensation. The test for this is done by stroking a softly serrated, circular pinwheel down both sides of your face and by using a cotton ball to determine your sense of light touch. No. 7 controls facial movements. Having you smile, frown, puff out your cheeks and squint your eyes tightly shut reveals whether or not left and right sides of your face are responding equally. No. 8 relates to balance centers in your brain and how well you can coordinate the movement of your eyes with the movement of your head. At this point in the exam, you fix your gaze on the tip of my nose while you are turning your head left to right. Nos. 9 and 10 are related to your throat and are tested simultaneously. As you say Ah repeatedly, I check to see if the roof of your mouth rises evenly. No. 11 relates to shoulder movement. No. 12 relates to your ability to stick out your tongue. Any difference between the responses of your left and right sides to any of these tests indicates an imbalance and pinpoints the area of your brainstem at which the imbalance has occurred. It also indicates what part of your nervous system will need to be stimulated in order to improve your overall function. For the final part of the neurological exam, I assess how successfully your body can coordinate your motor functions. Applied kinesiology, or muscle testing, focuses on your specific areas of complaint (shoulder, knee, back, wrist, etc.). If the responses from your left and ride sides differ, I use what I have already learned from your neurological exam to activate the weak areas of your brain and then observe whether or not you become stronger. If brain stimulation strengthens your problem area, it confirms that your problem is coming from a brain imbalance. As you read this article, take a moment to assess your own aches, pains and areas of concern. You may be currently suffering from joint pain, low energy, lethargy or any of a host of other problems. Perhaps you have already been suffering for years. Are you losing hope? Are you beginning to wonder if you will ever find any relief or improvement? Regardless of your area of complaint, I always begin with a thorough neurological exam because your brain controls everything in your body. Imbalances anywhere in your nervous system give us areas to strengthen. Using your brain and doing brain exercises speed your healing. My goal is to get you better and stronger and to return you as quickly as possible to the most optimum state of health possible for you.

A recent poll estimates the average person spends less than one hour a week outdoors. We can get so lost in the daily routine of life that we quickly lose our connection to nature. Simply put, get outside and make the time to connect with the universe. Feel the earth supporting you. Nature has an ability to bring us into a higher vibration naturally. Nature knows how to nurture us. Through honoring nature we honor the universe too. Start by making a commitment to really notice what is around you. Just be aware and present. Notice, feel, see, hear, sense and connect with all that is around you. Imagine yourself as part of the environment become a part of the natural surroundings. Note how it affects your body and your heart. Notice how everything responds. Just allow nature to show you how to be grounded and present with all that is.

Happiness habit: Commitment (and recommitment)

By Lysianne Unruh
elcome to February! Did you set a New Years resolution last month? Yes? How is it going? If you are still on track, you may find these questions good motivation. If youve stumbled a bit, or gotten off track already, you may find this line of questioning extremely annoying. In fact, you may feel a bit dejected or defeated. However, there isnt any need to abandon your resolution or beat yourself up. You can still turn this thing around and crush your goal. Commitment is the first step. Recommitment is the second step and the third step.

Commitment: Make it a habit.

What if your commitment to change could happen automatically? What if accomplishing your goal could be so automatic you didnt have to think so hard about making the right choice opening the fridge or going for a run? What if you could turn your resolution into a habit a good, positive habit? It turns out that our brains like to turn our behaviors into habits, or thought shortcuts, as a way to save effort so they can divert their focus to other tasks. An efficient brain, writes Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, allows us to stop thinking constantly about basic behaviors, such as walking and choosing

what to eat so we can devote mental energy to inventing spears, irrigation systems, and eventually, airplanes and video games. Setting simple, specific, realistic and measurable goals is the best way to keep our brains from feeling overwhelmed and confused. For example, I will run 3 miles, three times a week, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings at 6 p.m., first thing when I get home, is a goal which meets those criteria. From there we can begin working towards creating a powerful habit. Duhigg points out that a habit is created in our brains through a three-step process called the habit loop. It functions like this: FIRST STEP: If you were to commit to exercising three days a week, you would need a cue, or a trigger to tell your brain something new is happening. Perhaps you could leave your running shoes lying on the rug so you see them when you walk through the door. SECOND STEP: There is the process of establishing the new routine. Now, instead of dropping your stuff and heading straight to the fridge, you are prompted by the placement of the running shoes and change into your running clothes. THIRD STEP: There is the reward. For the first few weeks or so, the reward simply may be the sense of accomplishment,

When is self-doubt too much?

By Barry Kerr
ow do you know if your self-doubt is too much? Consider your level of confidence. A significant lack of confidence is driven by self-doubt and robs you of the ability to make decisions, take action and create the life you want. Indeed, weve all known people who seem frozen by self-doubt. It can affect all aspects of their life. (Over-confidence is another issue for another day). But for most people, self-doubt is subtle and can vary a great deal, depending on the particular issue, part of life, situation or people involved. One person can feel very confident in a work role, quite in charge, and then in a private relationship, feel very confused and uncertain. Another person can feel very confident with a spouse, and then turn into a nave child when with his/her mother. In working with clients in psychotherapy, life coaching or spiritual growth, we eventually run into this phenomenon to some degree or other. And though the self-doubt that is discovered may not be crippling the persons entire life, it typically is crippling the part of life that wants change. For example, Coretta (not her real name), a woman in her 60s, presented to us issues about her sister and mother, who were creating drama in her life. Coretta had patiently tolerated manipulative and abusive behaviors from them all her life. And now, even though she had come to understand these behaviors for what they were and knew she didnt want them anymore, she just couldnt seem to change things. In fact, as Coretta had grown in herself and experienced other relationships without drama, her familys behaviors became less and less tolerable. Yet, Coretta doubted herself. In contrast, she was the epitome of confidence in her professional life. But concerning personal relationships, she had been taught by her family, her religion and by society that the loving thing to do was to stay in her tolerant patience and accept her familys behavior. She let that message outweigh her own inner truth, which was becoming more and more urgent. It was crippling her. She was depressed and feeling powerless. During her three-day private retreat with us, we helped Coretta establish a stronger connection with her source of inner truth. In the process, as she became more conscious of her higher self and

Bilberry
(Vaccinium myrtillus)

ilberry is a relative of the blueberry, and its fruit is commonly used to make pies and jams. It has been used for nearly 1,000 years in traditional European medicine. Bilberry grows in North America, Europe and northern Asia. Historically, bilberry fruit was used to treat diarrhea, scurvy and other conditions. Today, the fruit is used as a folk or traditional remedy for diarrhea, menstrual cramps, eye problems, varicose veins, venous insufficiency (a condition in which the veins do not efficiently return blood

from the legs to the heart) and other circulatory problems. Bilberry leaf is used for entirely different conditions, including diabetes. The fruit of the bilberry plant can be eaten or made into extracts. Similarly, the leaves of the bilberry plant can be made into extracts or used to make teas.

There is not enough scientific evidence to support the use of bilberry fruit or leaf for any health conditions.

which is why keeping a goal measurable is important. Being able to cross off the days you run on your calendar is necessary for establishing a sense of reward at least until you get into the groove of running and start to crave the runners high. Over time, this loop cue, routine, reward; cue, routine, reward becomes more automatic. Suddenly we find ourselves craving our evening run, not feeling complete until were back home, sweating and breathing hard. The secret to maintaining our New Years resolutions is the recognition of the fact that our brains like to create habits good or bad. If our brains like to go on autopilot, why not have the habit loop work in service of making our lives easier or healthier, maybe by running or cleaning our desks on Friday afternoon or going to bed earlier?

Recommit. Start again.

This is where the power of recommitment enters into the equation. The cue, routine, reward loop is not created overnight. Often, it takes a number of months for a new habit to be established and ingrained enough for you to overcome the urge to drop everything once you walk through the door and sit on the couch with a beer, which was perhaps a previous habit. Instead of the all-or-nothing approach to accomplishing a goal, think of progress towards a goal as creating a new habit. This shift in perspective gives a little more room to fall off the wagon and climb back on again. Allowing ourselves to commit and recommit to our goals is the key to success. Go ahead. Commit. Recommit, yet again. Make it a habit.

messages she had inherited. She began to see that the urge she had felt all her life, the urge to set limits with her family and to claim her right to be free of manipulation and abuse, was always her real truth. It had taken nearly 60 years for her to trust herself, to give her own perceptions the weight to counterbalance the truths presented by others. After her healing retreat, Coretta quickly went on to renegotiate her relationships with her family and others. She was able to assert her truth, without second-guessing, without doubt, even when the other people in her life objected and judged her. In the three years since, her relationships have improved remarkably and Coretta is no longer depressed. Like Coretta, we are all subjected to the truths presented to us by society, by school, by family or even by the person standing in front of us in any given moment. In the Western world, one of the most powerful truths inherited through our Judeo-Christian culture is that we are worthless sinners, lost to the truth, unable to find our way without accepting and following the doctrines and opinions presented to us by religious leaders who know better than us. Even if we were not raised in a religious family, we have

still been subjected to this basic belief. After thousands of years, it has permeated all aspects of society, has been taken for granted, become part of our secular culture. It has planted in most of us a powerful seed of self-doubt that begins with believing that God/truth is outside of ourselves; we must look to others for our truth. Is it any wonder that self-doubt is epidemic? In our times, this is changing rapidly, as more and more of us are awakening to our divine origins, to our inherent nature as spiritual beings with direct access to whatever truth we need to move forward in confidence, free of the kind of doubt that cripples us. In this context, reaching out to coaches or therapists is not about being told who we are or what to do. Its about being guided toward finding the answers within and trusting oneself. Though its usually good to invite feedback and advice, in the end, only we know whats true for us.

A monthly advice column for your energy system

By Tina Bensman

Everything in the universe contains energy. Yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month, Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, As Valentines Day approaches, my heart is heavy. So heavy. I recently got divorced, and although I know it was for the better, I cant help but mourn the loss of what I thought my life would be in the future. So here I am, essentially starting over, but I dont know where to begin. I think I lost myself in my marriage. I dont even know what I like doing or who I am anymore. How do I live my purpose when I dont know where to begin? Saddened Valentine Dear Saddened Valentine, Yes, I hear you, and I feel the heaviness you described in your heart. I will be perfectly honest right off the bat. You are still healing. Im not sure how recent your divorce was, but your energy is still very affected by this. Before you can connect with your purpose, you must clear away the heaviness. Picture the radiant sun covered up by clouds. Just because you cant see it doesnt mean its not there, right? You are that sun. Your purpose is simply hidden behind some clouds. Get rid of the clouds and you will find yourself. My sense is that those clouds started forming well before your divorce as you gradually forgot who you really were. Now, living your purpose is more than just what you do. Its a daily practice of awareness, an awareness of who you are and how
36
Natures Pathways | February 2014

you are represented in this world. You know that you are living your purpose if you overhear someone describing you and it matches your ideas and feelings of yourself and you are proud of that description. Your purpose is your essence and how you fulfill it is through your natural intuitive abilities. Chances are, you are already using your natural intuitive abilities without even knowing it. Figuring out your unique set of skills is a road map to your destiny in this life. So back to your question: How do I live my purpose when I dont know where to begin? You must heal the divorce wounds and release the energy you are carrying from that relationship and your ideas about what your life would be. When you successfully do that, you have a blank slate. Anything is possible. Currently there is a chalkboard with a lot of dusty eraser marks on it. Clean off that chalkboard. It may take awhile, but this is a crucial step. Tune into your natural intuitive abilities. There are many more than simply seeing, hearing or feeling. There are classes to learn these skills, but you can definitely explore this on your own as well by paying attention to what you are already doing. Those two steps are a perfect start to clearing and replenishing your energy so you can get back to yourself. I can see the sun in you, and I hope you wont give up until it is blinding you from the inside out.

t a e l y t s r u o Find y E M O H Y Z THE CO
From regally beautiful Victorian buffets to comfy sectional sofas to local artist-made headboards to colorful and affordable up-cycled desks, The Cozy Home offers something for everyone and inventory changes daily. While this intriguing variety makes for a great sales floor, the shops recent success might be attributable to some more traditional ideas: family, sustainability and community-mindedness.

BY REBECCA BENTZ

A family approach
The Cozy Home opened two months ago and has grown significantly in that short time. In just one month, the number of consigners swelled from 15 to 75. Behind the consignment stores success are La Rae Richard and Leah Hernandez, a mother-daughter duo with a real passion for what they do. Its kind of like Christmas every day, Leah says. You just never know what people are going to bring in. And we are always willing to try something. The consignment store came about when both mother and daughter decided they needed a change. La Rae, a Texas resident for the past 10 years, recently moved back up north and wished to take a break from buying, refurbishing and selling homes. Leah was looking for a change from her previous

employment. Mother and daughter pooled their efforts and The Cozy Home was born. This allows us to be creative and to be around people, which we like. It gives us a little more flexibility than working for somebody else, Leah says. The two modeled The Cozy Home after a consignment store in Texas that La Rae loved and used to furnish the houses she refurbished. Leah admits that there are pros and cons to mother and daughter working together, but the two make a good team. We complement each other in a variety of different ways, one of them is general style. I think I have a little bit of a voice for the 30-somethings out there who are owning their first home or working with a small space, whereas my mom has already been down that road. Leah has found that she will accept pieces for consignment that her mother might not see the style in and those pieces will sell. La Rae, on the other hand, has more traditional tastes and an eye for what might appeal to members of her generation. And she is always willing to share tips, such as how to fix a stripped screw, and other knowledge she gained from doing all of the refurbishment work on the homes she bought and sold.

A new look
Just as La Rae and Leah have given new life to up-cycled and gently used furniture, theyve done the same for The Cozy Home itself. Half of the buildings interior is comprised of repurposed materials from Habitat ReStore and mother and daughter did a lot of the renovation work. As evidence of their resourcefulness, the duo made their entire desk system by combining and reworking random cabinetry available from Habitat ReStore. They also purchased a cartful of old barn wood, cut it down to 6-inch strips and used it to trim the entire interior of the building. But for most guests, the restored decorative barn beams that line the store walls are usually the main conversation starters. The other half of the building materials came from the leftovers of the previous lessee, including all of the doors, sinks and fixtures. La Rae and Leah donated anything that wouldnt work for their purposes to Habitat ReStore, fulfilling the sustainable building cycle.

A lot more
The amenities The Cozy Home has to offer dont stop at consignment and sales. La Rae and Leah offer much more. Through their decorating advice service, they will evaluate a homes existing furnishings and recommend additions from the store or evaluate where a customer-selected item would fit within a homes current decorating scheme. The duo also will make house calls to evaluate items belonging to consignors with multiple furnishings they would like to sell. For furniture and collectible buyers, one of the most helpful services The Cozy Home offers is its Wish List. The stores software system allows shoppers to detail particular items theyre looking for. If someone sees a dresser that they like in the store, but they dont like the color or they need an extra drawer, we can keep an eye open and contact them if something that theyre looking for comes in, Leah explains. She scans the inventory each Wednesday to see if there are any matches to customers wishes. The Wish List program is very popular, Leah says, and The Cozy Home currently has approximately 100 wishes, illustrating the high demand for its consignment items. If you are looking for that missing piece to tie a room together, or if youre combining households and need to downsize the number of sofas and other furniture items you have, consider exploring the many services La Rae and Leah offer at The Cozy Home. But act fast, that perfect antique lamp or contemporary chair youve been searching for might be snatched up before you know it!

A focus on local living

What sets The Cozy Home apart from other furniture retailers is the locally sourced nature of items for sale. Ultimately, this is all stuff that has been in the area. Youre not paying for something to be shipped from a different state or shipped from a different country. Leah explains. The carbon footprint is definitely lowered. And since all of the items are local, La Rae and Leah are able to share the stories behind each one, like that of a little cabinet on sale now. The cabinet is made from wood reclaimed from the bottom of Lake Michigan. The Cozy Home doesnt offer just local items, it offers quality, useable furnishings. La Rae and Leah handpick each item. As a result, the store doesnt feel like a thrift store, nor does it look like one. Instead, it is set up so that shoppers are able to envision the furnishings in their own homes. And what furnishings they are, including midcentury modern sofas and tables, designer fabric items, chandeliers, vintage art prints, shag sculptured rugs and more. For individuals interested in selling their own furniture and collectibles, consigning through The Cozy Home offers a safe alternative to posting on Craigslist and inviting strangers into their homes. Its also far less stressful than hosting a garage sale.

Antibiotics for ear infections: Are they safe? Are they necessary?
By Brian R. Wussow, DC
he most important thing as a parent is our childrens health. Are you the type of parent who, if you had an option, would prefer to handle an ear infection naturally, without any medication, or better yet be in a position where it didnt occur in the first place? Here are a few facts about middle ear infections (otitis media): Seventy-five to 85 percent of all children will have one by the age of 3. Many are recurrent. It is the No. 1 reason children visit the pediatrician. It is in the top 10 reasons for visits to the emergency room. It is the most common diagnosis by pediatricians and responsible for more than 24.5 million visits annually. Financially, the direct costs for treatment exceed $3.5 billion! That number soars to more than $6 billion when you add in the indirect costs, such as parents lost wages. The most common medical treatment is antibiotics and the most common antibiotic chosen is amoxicillin. The problem with this approach, according to the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP), is that 80 percent of childhood ear infections go away on their own. In fact, you need to treat 15 kids to benefit just one. Their recommendation is much simpler watchful waiting for 48 to 72 hours. One of the main reasons for this approach is the spike in antibiotic-resistant bacteria due to the overprescribing of antibiotics. We have created bacteria that literally eat antibiotics for breakfast. So when you really need them, they dont work. Bacteria now exist that no drugs can kill and there is nothing in the pipeline, either, that holds any promise.
40
Natures Pathways | February 2014

If thats not enough, according to an article in the British Medical Journal, antibiotics were not helpful in reducing or preventing fluid buildup and did not decrease pain in 24 hours. To make matters worse, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, kids who took amoxicillin were two to six times more likely to have recurrent ear infections than those that were given a placebo. How many parents knew the drug they were giving their kids for the ear infection made their children more likely to get another ear infection? A little boy named Wyatt Leamon came down with his first ear infection. Like so many, his parents took him to the pediatrician. After confirming his parents suspicion, the doctor asked the question: Does your child have any allergies to amoxicillin? Please watch little Wyatts story at www.wyattleamonfoundation.org/. How is any parent to know this? Their child had never had the drug before. Although allergies are rare, how many think their child is one in a million? All drugs have side effects. The second line of defense in medicine is tympanostomy, better known as tubes. The surgeon cuts a hole in the membrane and inserts a tube, which in theory helps the ear drain. It is the most common childhood surgery. According to the literature, up to 50 percent of kids have to have it done again! The problem is neither antibiotics nor tubes address the cause of the ear infection. They are both designed to treat symptoms, like putting a piece of tape over the warning light on the dashboard of your car rather than fixing the problem at hand. Very much like mosquitoes will always show up at the swamp no matter how many times you spray them, bacteria and viruses will
www.naturespathways.com

show up in the inner ear if it is not draining well. Both locations are warm, wet and provide plenty of food. The cure is to drain the swamp to get rid of the mosquitoes and to drain the inner ear to get rid of, or better yet prevent, the inner ear infection. The tube responsible for naturally draining the inner ear is the eustachian tube. The opening of this tube is controlled by a muscle called the tensor veli palatini. Nerves from the top part of the neck control this muscle. Subluxations affecting these levels can impair the normal function of this muscle, causing the eustachian tube to not properly drain the inner ear. This results in fluid backing up and creating the swamp and the ideal breeding ground for an inner ear infection. When holding a newborn, we support the head and neck because it is such a fragile thing. It surprises most that normal doctor-assisted births can create 60 to 90 pounds of axial traction on a childs neck, or the force required to lift a 60- to 90-pound child off the ground by his head. This is the same force the doctor uses to assist the child out of the birth canal. This type of force is often where the first subluxation takes place, and that affects the normal function of the nerve system in the top part of the neck. Correcting these subluxations can produce amazing results in a very quick timeframe. A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that 43 percent of children with ear infections responded to chiropractic in just two visits and 93 percent within 10 days. An article in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that 69 percent of chiropractors kids never had an ear infection

while only 20 percent of medical doctors kids had the same childhood experience! Although watchful waiting may seem like a good idea in the world of academia, as a parent, who wants to see their child in pain for 24 to 72 hours? We have an immune system that most agree, when working well, is the most powerful disease-fighting system known to mankind. Feed it right and nurture it, and the immune system has the ability to heal and keep us well. When it comes to our childrens health, we as parents take that job seriously. My list for strengthening the bodys immune system naturally includes: Assure optimal nerve function. Breastfeed at least six months. Serve plenty of fruits and veggies. Get proper rest. Reduce stress. Avoid smokers. The importance of chiropractic in kids, especially as it relates to ear infections, cannot be underestimated. Get your kids checked for subluxations. As the twig grows, so grows the tree!

Stepping into awareness

By Teresa Martens

n America, February is officially known as Heart Awareness Month, during which you are encouraged to educate yourself on the dangers of heart disease and get back on track to better heart health. And since its the beginning of the year and so many of us setting resolutions for dieting and exercise, its a good reminder to take care of the old ticker. While there are countless awareness days throughout the year, youd be hard-pressed to find a spiritual awareness day, never mind a whole month. Theres sea grass awareness month in March, garlic mustard awareness in May and hair loss awareness in August, to name but a few. Im sure to some, these days are important. But how is it that we are encouraged to place our awareness on garlic mustard, but we are reluctant to bring our awareness to the one thing that can inspire, encourage, uplift and cause us to live in love with ourselves and others? Spiritual awareness manifests as a shift in consciousness, which can cause us to become unfocused or overwhelmed, have a sense of something more but not know what that something more is, or experience a lack of joy in things that used to bring joy, such as the music we listen to or the food we eat. This shift occurs for many reasons but the most significant is that there has been an awakening or an awareness that hadnt

been experienced before the shift. This can create tension within ourselves, in our relationships and in our jobs. There is a sense of emptiness and a lack of purpose that overwhelms or paralyzes us, keeping us from moving forward. It can be downright uncomfortable and it is the reason why so many of us choose to ignore or deny that anything is amiss. Being spiritually aware is not about having religion and going to church on Sunday. It is about having a connection with something higher than yourself. Its about connecting with something that inspires you and leaves you in awe when the connection is made. Its about expanding consciousness, getting out of yourself and becoming aware that there is more to life than the next fad or juicy bit of gossip. Once youve made the connection, theres no mistaking it, leaving you wanting more. It leaves you with a feeling of bliss, joy, expansiveness and a desire to share that feeling with others. Being aware of your spirituality is more than just reading a book or an article online. Its about experience. Theres quite a difference between knowing something and feeling something. Its one thing to know that its 100 degrees outside with humidity, quite another to experience it sweat dripping off your face and all. With spiritual awareness comes responsibility, responsibility for your own growth and transformation and for putting that forth into the world. Its about sharing the giving and receiving of love. When you are open to receiving love from the Creator and you are full with that love, you want to give something back. And because the Creator doesnt need to receive love because he is love, your love is sent out into the world. One person at a time, that love expands until the whole world is encapsulated with love, and thats when things start to change. People become aware of the impact they are having on the world. They change their ways of living, leaving less of an imprint on the planet. Corporations begin to look at their employees as valuable and irreplaceable, putting the almighty dollar in its proper place as an energy exchange only, in favor of their employees having quality of life.
www.naturespathways.com

Organizations and companies are held responsible for the actions they take or dont take. Humanity shifts and we grow in our awareness of each other and the love and respect we hold for each other. Having spiritual awareness means that you are responsible for yourself and your connection to the Creator. Ego is overcome in favor of doing what is right for the whole of humanity. In this state, everyone has what is needed. Everyone has what is wanted. There is enough for everyone. If you are feeling unfocused or overwhelmed, having a sense of something more but not knowing what that something more is, or experiencing a lack of joy, perhaps a spiritual mentoring session can help by bringing your awareness to the thoughts that youre thinking, bringing them into the open for clarification and action, oftentimes creating new ways in which to express yourself in the world. Just by simply talking, ideas and thoughts begin to make sense. You become more aware of different insights that are presented to you in a session, and you connect the dots becoming aware of the whole picture. The tension eases and you are able to become peaceful, focused, action-oriented and joyful.

Environmental effects of grain-fed and grass-fed beef

the hay or grazing land. Instead, biological pest control as well as shovels or mowers are used for weed control. Grain-fed animals are given many antibiotics, most of which are governed through their feed, whereas organic grass-fed animals are not given any antibiotics. Rather than addressing the environmental effects of conventional and organic farming, the focus of this article is mainly on the environmental effects of cattle grain-fed versus grass-fed. According to a report from the United Kingdoms National Trust, feeding cattle on grass throughout their life cycle is the most environmentally sustainable way to raise beef. Native Americans lived sustainably as they thrived on the grass-fed buffalo that grazed the Great Plains of North America. Many farmers of grassfed beef use rotational grazing, feeding their cattle organic grass and alfalfa during the growing months and, during the winter months, feeding them organic hay produced on their farms. Rotational grazing allows the manure to be spread around the land in an environmentally friendly way. Unlike most grass-fed cattle, which are allowed to roam and graze on fresh, green grasses, grain-fed cattle are often confined in feedlots where there is no grass to eat at all. In fact, as an Animal Welfare Approved newsletter revealed, The U.S. feedlot system is the largest and most concentrated in the world, with less than 5 percent of the nations feedlots marketing 80 to 90 percent of all U.S. beef. So as the manure piles up in the feedlots, farmers must use machinery to remove the waste. Grass-fed cattle, on the other

hand, are turned out to graze and fertilize the land themselves, eliminating the use of machines. With grain-fed cattle, the overuse of machines causes unnecessary gas emissions, soil compaction and consequently soil erosion. Global greenhouse gas emissions are often analyzed when comparing the environmental effects of grain-fed and grass-fed cattle. According to the U.S. National Research Council, the livestock industry is the largest contributor in the U.S. of nitrous oxide and methane gas, as well as pollution problems associated with nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilizers, manure spills and pesticides which have infiltrated surface water and rivers. Cattle produce methane and nitrous oxide gas regardless of their feed. However, according to the National Trust, pasturebased systems performed better in net carbon emissions than the feedlot systems. This is due to fact that the plants and grass not only serve the purpose of feeding cattle, they also absorb carbon that sometimes reduces the net global greenhouse gas emissions. Feedlots oftentimes do not have any plants within the compounds, thereby preventing the uptake of carbon. The main reason grass-fed beef is more environmentally friendly than grain-fed is that it is an efficient use of land. While some land may be unsuitable for growing crops, it may be very appropriate for cattle to graze on. For example, grass-fed cattle on many farms are able to roam through the woods where, in the summer, the trees actually provide shade, protection and some forage. In summary, rotational grazing allows the cattle to feed and fertilize in an efficient and environmentally friendly fashion. The manure management that rotational grazing allows is impossible in the feedlot grain-fed cattle system. This goes hand in hand with greenhouse gas emissions. Excessive use of machinery produces more greenhouse gases and more pollution as manure runs off or spills occur during transportation. Fertility literacy: How much do you know?

By Christie Olsen, MSN, APNP
ave you ever felt like you didnt know what to say to a friend or co-worker going through fertility treatment? Perhaps you literally didnt have the words? If so, you are not alone. Working in obstetrics, gynecology and fertility settings for the past 15 years, I have observed many people lack a basic literacy of reproduction and fertility. Not only does this make receiving fertility treatment services more challenging, it also isolates the clients seeking treatment. Culturally, how can we be a supportive friend,

relative or co-worker without the language to discuss the experience? Resolve The National Infertility Association indicates 12 percent of childbearing women, or 1 in 8 couples, go through fertility treatment. Those figures most likely exclude the samesex couples seeking to have children and needing fertility services, often without the fertility diagnosis. This article will provide a basic definition of some of the more common terms used in the world of fertility treatments.
WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR GESTATIONAL SURROGACY?

FOLLICLE: A fluid-filled sac on the surface

of the ovary that contains an immature egg. During a womans menstrual cycle, the follicle grows and the egg matures, making it receptive to fertilization. Typically, women between puberty and menopause have five to 60 follicles line up on the surface of the ovary each month. Without fertility medications, the five to 60 follicles have a competition to see which follicle will win and ovulate the mature egg. When fertility medications are taken, the goal is to have more than one of the five to 60 follicles develop a mature egg.

SPERM MORPHOLOGY: The laboratory

will look at the shape of sperm to determine if an adequate percent of the sample has normal shapes. It is very normal to have many sperm with abnormal shapes as our bodies are not perfect. However, there is a minimum amount of sperm that must have the normally shaped tail and head in order to fertilize an egg.

have very poor quality and women in their late 30s can have great quality eggs. To give an idea, about 1 out of every 8 eggs that a 40-year-old woman ovulates is chromosomally normal.
IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF): In vitro means in glass. Fertilization refers to the sperm fertilizing the egg. Simply put, this is when fertilization of an egg occurs in the laboratory, or outside of the human body. Reasons why clients might use IVF include when working with a gestational surrogate, blocked fallopian tubes, poor sperm quality or count, previous tubal ligation, unexplained infertility or so genetic testing can be done on embryos before they are transferred into the uterus. REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST:

OVARIAN RESERVE: This is a term that is used to describe the theoretical amount of eggs a woman has left. Low reserve means that a women does not have many eggs left to ovulate. This can happen when a woman is very young or in her 40s. Some women have great ovarian reserve into their 40s. EGG QUALITY: This is a descriptive term that refers to the quality of a womans eggs. It can refer to the number of eggs that are genetically or chromosomally normal (i.e. able to create a viable pregnancy). The best predictor of egg quality is a womans age. The rule is generally the younger the age, the better the quality. Of course, there are exceptions to this. Some young women can

the womans ovulation, the sperm sample is prepared in a lab (with the goal of gathering only the very best swimmers). The sample, about 0.5 milliliters, is placed into a syringe. A very skinny catheter is placed on the end of the syringe. The catheter goes along the canal of the cervix and into the uterus where the sample is placed. The benefits of this method include timing the sperm sample with the ovulation. This is useful when intercourse is not an option, or when sperm quality is lower. The procedure helps sperm travel to their destination, which can improve the chance of success. Improving fertility literacy improves our social supports for people receiving treatment and allows people to be educated consumers of health care.

Caring for your winter skin

By Kylene Gehrke

or many, adapting the way we care for our skin to Wisconsins drastically different seasons is often an afterthought. While the concept of switching from tank tops in the summer to parkas in the winter comes quite instinctively, changing moisturizers from a light-weight hydration lotion to a more emollient crme is not.

Winter in Wisconsin wreaks havoc on all skin types and can be extra detrimental to dry and sensitive types, often increasing irritating symptoms for those who suffer from rosacea and eczema. The extremes our skin endures from exposure to frigid temperatures and harsh wind chills outside, alternating with extra dry heat

indoors, create a recipe for disaster for our poor Wisconsin skin. Red, irritated, itchy, flaky skin with rough patches is often the result and this actually compromises the barrier function of our skin. To combat the effects of winter on your skin, and to adapt to Mother Nature, here are a few things to keep your skin healthy, hydrated and protected.

Snowy stories
By Sierra Pope Muoz and Brenna Holzhauer
ho doesnt love a snow day? A cold winter day is the perfect opportunity to hole up indoors, playing games, reading and drinking hot cocoa. Or, better yet, you could bundle up and take those rowdy little ones outside to find some snowy stories! All this fresh powder is the perfect blank slate for nature to write stories in the snow. While many of Wisconsins critters are hunkered down to weather the storm, you might be surprised at all the signs of life you can find in the snow. Next time you spot tracks in the snow, take a moment to observe them carefully. Look at the size of the tracks and what direction the paws or claws seem to be pointing. A tracking guidebook can be helpful to identify the owner of the prints.

Warm up
with some winter fun at ALNC!
NEW Nature Nook featuring hands-on wetland, Preschool nature programs High-tech indoor climate exhibits to explore! Hike or snowshoe on our nature trails!

330 Femrite Drive, Monona

If you spot four prints together forming a rectangle, two short and two long, it could be a backyard bunny, hopping through the fresh snow to find some sumac branches to chew on. If the tracks are a bit smaller and form a square, you might have found a squirrel trail! If you can tell what direction the squirrel was scurrying from, you might be able to find where she uncovered this mornings acorn feast. If you see more than one track, try to reconstruct how the animal was moving. Some walkers, including foxes, dogs and even humans, step carefully in their own tracks for energy efficiency. Skunks and other waddlers, on the other hand, seem to move one side of their body and then the other, leaving irregular prints along the path. Rabbits and squirrels are gallopers, bounding across the snow and landing with their strong hind feet in front of their smaller front feet. There are infinite clues to find in the snow, and once you know where to look, you can have a day of fun outdoors solving nature mysteries. Have the birds been hopping through the snow or staying high up in the trees? Is that family of deer traveling together or did some stay snuggled at home? Are those prints from a neighbors dog or possibly a hungry coyote? Tracks arent the only winter clues to be found. You can often find traces of fur or feathers. A field guide can help determine what kind of animal left them, and possibly even who ate whom for lunch! A circular patch of packed snow could be where a whitetailed deer curled up for the night. Field mice are sure to be busy tunneling through the drifts, where the air pockets under the snow keep them insulated from the cold wind above. Can you find any telltale holes or trails in the snow? So on this snowy day, bundle up and beat cabin fever with some good old-fashioned tracking. See what stories you can find in the snow!

Osteopathy offers options to relieve tooth and facial pain

By Jed Downs, MD, MPH

onsider the following: A hockey player broke her tooth off and it cant be reconstructed. Rather than a bridge, she decides to have a dental implant. The root is removed, a titanium peg is screwed into the upper jaw and a crown is placed on the titanium peg. If everything goes according to plan, she should be pain-free and looking good. The problem is that pain persists in the area even though all nerves associated with the tooth are gone. There is an interface between dentistry and osteopathy, which may provide insights and therapeutic approach. A tooth is a peg with one to four roots that is set in a socket. The outer layer of the tooth under the gum line is made of cementum. The tooth is anchored to either the mandible (lower jaw) or the maxillary bone (upper jaw) by ligaments that attach the cementum to the bone. A bundle of nerves and blood vessels leave the maxilla and enter each root. This is the pulp. The nerves of the pulp carry pain information from cavities and toothaches. However, there are other structures whose nerves may carry information to the brain that can be implicated in dental pain as well. When the pain is coming from decay or a broken tooth, a dentists office is really the only place to be seen to get treatment. What about pains that persist or develop after dental treatment? Pain that persists after tooth extraction can occur as a result of distorting the upper jaw or maxilla or the lower jaw or mandible via the force used to pull the tooth. Typically, the tooth is pulled with an upward or downward motion, depending upon whether it is a lower or upper tooth, along with an external rotation. As the tooth is pulled, the socket can become distorted, its connective tissue being twisted. This can be a source of pain. Dental implants, each of which requires the insertion of a titanium screw into the bone, can also twist connective tissue of the bone and create an intraosseous lesion. The forces of dental extractions can distort the maxilla so that it fails to interrelate to adjacent bones the way it should. Such position shifts can affect larger nerves that branch to the nerves that supply the root canals, creating a more generalized facial pain. In the lower jaw, pulling and twisting can occasionally create problems of the temporal mandibular joints (TMJs).

Root canal procedures remove the nervous tissue from inside the tooth. This should solve the problem of dental pain once and for all. Unfortunately, the tooth is not the only structure that is innervated. The ligaments that connect the tooth and bone of the socket are also innervated and when they are under constant tension or sprained, they too can be a source of pain. Orthodontists use those ligamentous connections between the teeth and jaws when they design the forces used to realign teeth.

Why eating eggs can wreak havoc on your health

By Brittany Miller, RD

any of us have been taught to believe that eating eggs is healthy. Weve heard what a great source of protein they are, that theyre rich in vitamins and minerals, and how theyre a convenient and inexpensive part of your diet. Any concern of their cholesterol-rich yolk is avoided by encouraging the use of egg whites. But does the research back up these claims? Numerous studies show the negative consequences of eggs on our health, yet most of us only hear about the positive effects of eggs. Why is that? The egg industry obviously has a vested interested in keeping the public image of eggs positive. It has advertised eggs as healthy for decades, denying connections to heart disease. The Federal Trade Commission carried out legal action against this. In fact, it was supported by the Supreme Court which deemed their advertising as false and misleading. To counteract this, the egg industry spent millions of dollars attempting to convince the public that eggs are good for them. If we stop eating eggs, the egg industry loses big money. The guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association are to eat no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol daily, and less than 200 milligrams if you have high cholesterol. Considering heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. and high cholesterol is a significant risk factor, eating less than 200 milligrams of cholesterol per day might be a better choice. One large egg has 186 milligrams cholesterol and all animal products (meat, eggs, dairy) contain cholesterol. So if you want to stay within 300 milligrams a day, you can have one egg, one small yogurt and one five-ounce chicken breast. Thats 299 milligrams of cholesterol, so the rest of the food you eat for the day has to be 100 percent plant-based. Eating two eggs in one day isnt even an option. If you want to stay under 200 milligrams a day, well, after eating that one egg, you can eat almost no cheese, meat or dairy for the rest of the day!

Natures Pathways | February 2014

Here are some examples of clinical studies showing the eye-opening consequences of eating eggs:

Eggs may increase your risk of diabetes. According to a study of almost 3,000 adults: Egg consumption was significantly and positively associated with diabetes risk, particularly in women. This is even after researchers controlled for calorie intake, smoking, family history, body mass index and more. Another study found that those who eat less than one egg per day had three times greater risk of diabetes than those who eat less than one egg per week. Eggs can have similar effects on your arteries as smoking cigarettes. Eggs increase the total plaque area (TPA) in your carotid artery, the artery that leads to the brain. This is the precursor to a stroke. A study of about 1,200 people concluded: Our data suggest a strong association between egg consumption and carotid plaque burden. The exponential nature of the increase in TPA by quintile of egg consumption follows a similar pattern to that of cigarette smoking. Egg consumption has been linked with heart failure. After a 13-year follow-up of about 14,000 people, greater egg consumption was associated with a greater risk of heart failure (23 percent greater risk per one-serving increase in eggs). Eggs can be a public health hazard. More than half a billion eggs were recalled in 2011. Salmonella,

the leading cause of food poisoning-related death, survives scrambling, omelets, and French toast. Eggs can increase mens risk of prostate cancer. Less than one egg per day doubles mens risk of prostate cancer. Eggs may increase mortality. Eating one egg or more per day is associated with significantly greater risk of mortality in a study on healthy U.S. male physicians. There have been many studies on egg consumption and heart disease, and the results have been mixed. There are studies showing statistically significant increase in risk of heart disease, and others that do not show this. It is up to you if you want to take that chance. Considering 1 in 4 deaths in the United States is from heart disease, and diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death, you might want to consider opting for oatmeal instead of eggs for breakfast.

STEOPATHY OFFERS OPTIONS TO RELIEVE TOOTH AND FACIAL PAIN O continued from page 53

Braces can shift the position of the teeth and lead to remodeling of sockets. The appliances can also shift the bones of the face in such a way that the normal movement of the cranium is blocked. That can lead to headaches or even neck and back pain. Facial trauma can lead to distortions either in the attachments of the teeth or of the bones of the face. That may create pain that can be interpreted as being of dental origin. Trauma to the head or whiplash injuries may cause distortion in the position of the temporal bones. The temporal bones house the sockets for the TMJ joints, so when they are not located and moving properly, the lower jaw will be misaligned and there can be issues with bite alignment. The temporal bones are strongly influenced by the occiput, the bone in the back of the head. In turn, it forms joints with the upper neck so even upper neck problems can lead to pain experienced in the face. Seeing a dentist for facial and tooth pain is the place to start. But if explanations or relief are not forthcoming, osteopathy is a means of diagnosis and treatment that may lead to pain relief that doesnt require ongoing pain medications or oral surgery.

The best tips for dealing with a dry, itchy scalp

By Autumn Burns
ne of the most frequently asked questions I hear as a hair stylist comes in many different forms: How do I get rid of my flaky scalp/dry scalp/dandruff/cradle cap, or Do you know about anything that can help my eczema or psoriasis? Following are the answers and the reasons why they work. These tips are not meant to replace advice from your health care practitioner, and are meant to help men and women alike.

you have thicker or curlier hair, you will need to use the darker rigid bristles to be able to reach your scalp. There are vegan, humane and sustainably harvested natural material options, or you can find many of the basic natural material boar bristle brushes as well.

Brush your dry hair and scalp with a natural material boar bristle brush.

Brush your dry hair with a natural bristle brush each time before you shampoo, rinse or rewet to style. For short hair, brush the entire scalp. For long hair, start brushing down on your ends to detangle if necessary, then brush down from scalp to ends. Brush only dry hair and make sure you brush as much of your scalp as you are able. For kids or pregnant women with cradle cap, eczema or psoriasis, you may want to apply organic coconut or jojoba oil to the scalp. Next, gently brush to remove excess skin cells and oil or sebum, then wash your hair. You may need to rinse and let your brush air dry to keep it clean. Brushing will stimulate blood flow to your scalp to improve the flow of necessary nutrients to each hair follicle and sebaceous gland (oil gland). The bristles also will exfoliate any excess skin. The bristles will distribute your oil down the hair shaft and help close the cuticle, making your hair look healthy. Moving excess oil from close to your scalp to the ends, where your hair needs it more, helps protect your ends and makes your hair look healthier and cleaner. Your hair will have less static if you use an all-natural material brush rather than a synthetic material brush. There are different types of natural boar bristle brushes. People with fine hair or small children can use either the fine, light-colored bristles or the darker rigid bristles of a natural boar bristle brush. If

You should not shampoo every day or every time you shower.

Shampoo at most every other day if you have fine hair. If you have thick, curly or coarse hair, try to go as long as possible between shampoos; for some people this may be a week or more. When you strip all of the oil away from your scalp every day, your body produces even more oil to catch up, but if you leave the right amount on your scalp, it will regulate and eventually start producing the correct amount for you. This wont happen right away; you have to stick to this for at least a couple of weeks to see results. Here is a helpful tip to go longer between shampoos: Lets say you work out every day and you want to get the excess sweat, product or oil off your hair after your workout. Brush your hair when its dry with your natural bristle brush, rinse with really warm water (Let it hit your scalp!), and rinse for at least 60 seconds while massaging your scalp with your fingers. If you need, put a very small amount of conditioner on your ends and rinse, dry and style as usual. If you dont believe this will work, try it for the first time on a day you dont have to be anywhere special. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Check your shampoo and conditioner ingredients.

Check to make sure they do not have ingredients that may be allergens that cause inflammation, or known carcinogens like
www.naturespathways.com

formaldehyde, which is usually listed in hidden forms. You can identify these ingredients on the Environmental Working Group website,www.ewg.org/skindeep/. Other ingredients to look out for are all forms of parabens or phthalates, which are usually hidden in the fragrance. Both are hormone disruptors. Hormones are needed to regulate our bodies functions, including our sebaceous glands, which regulate oil on the surface of our skin, scalp and all of our hair follicles. Sebum reduces water loss from our skins surface, protects skin from infection from bacteria and fungi, and is colonized by beneficial bacteria that may have a role in immune regulation. Shampoos and conditioners free parabens and phthalates and, in my experience, are most likely to be better at keeping the balance of the right amount of protective oils on our scalp and keeping it at the right pH. This keeps the scalp and hair at its optimum health. Remember, you dont have to implement all of these tips at once, and your scalp concern wont change immediately overnight; you have to stick with it and take one step at a time when working toward your healthiest hair and scalp.

Fulll your purpose

By Rebecca Grazulis, M.A., M.Ed.

was so moved by the coverage of Nelson Mandelas passing, as most of you were. Maybe watching the coverage of such a tremendous life caused quite a few of you to reflect on your own. Me too. For instance, here is the question: Am I doing what I am meant to do with my life? Intuitive coaches should consider that question central to their work and the question that clients should address. Empathy is very important. The key to any coachs effectiveness is understanding the clients journeys. Only then can coaches really help their clients move on to bigger and better things. However, a lot of people, myself included, get stuck in the past and on focusing on all the circumstances that make it difficult to fulfill their purposes. Money. Time. Obligations. Yadda, yadda, yadda. These very human aspects of our journeys are frustrating. However, you cannot let these things stop you from doing what you came here to do. Will your efforts be thwarted? Maybe. Will people disagree with you? Perhaps. Will it be easy?

helping women live magically

Probably not. Do it anyway. Sometimes it takes years to figure out what we are meant to do. Sometimes the journey of figuring out what we are meant to do is actually part of what we are meant to do. Heres the thing: Once you know what you came here to do, you cant not know. Add to that, you cant not do it. As an intuitive, it becomes clear pretty quickly that we are all one. We are all part of a giant puzzle. And as you know, when one piece of a puzzle is missing, it affects the entire picture. The world has gotten off course in many ways. The evening news provides powerful evidence of this on a daily basis. But perhaps you need someone to remind you, as I need someone to remind me, that all of the difficulties that exist in the world or in your life are not excuses. Maybe you dont have all the money you want or all the support you desire. However, if you know what you need to do, well, you still know what you need to do. Then the central question becomes: Are you going to do it? Doing what you need to do is the only way the planet gets back on track, person by person, one small step by one small step. It requires everyone asking the hard questions, looking past their circumstances and doing what needs to be done anyway. We love people like Nelson Mandala, not only because he was a great man who did extraordinary things, but also because he reminds us that we all have the potential to love like he did. We wont all save a country. We arent all called to lead as he did, but each of us has a ripple effect just like his did and still does. We start to ensure that the arc of the universe that Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke about will bend towards justice when we decide our fears and our concerns are nothing compared to our love. So we decide to fulfill our purposes. We start doing what we came here to do anyway.

Will solar power work at my home?

By Mark Warnick
solar system utilizes the suns energy to offset energy in your home. A photovoltaic system converts the energy to electricity. A solar hot water collector collects the heat energy to offset natural gas, electricity or whatever is used to heat your hot water and/or home. What makes a good site? Access to the suns rays throughout the day is the major requirement, as is the pitch of the roof and the direction the roof faces for roof-mounted systems. Eighty to 85 percent of the suns energy falls between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in our area on a given day. A rule of thumb for the location of a solar system is to have no shading during this time period throughout the year. A solar professional visiting your site will have a tool to assess the shading at locations being considered for a system. The analysis may reveal shading during this time period for some months, but it may not rule out the practicality of solar. For instance, a tree line or house to the south may shade the location during the daytime in the winter months but the rest of the year the area is free of shading. The lost production will not be as significant as if the shading occurred during the spring through fall. During the winter, the sun is low in the sky. The weather in this area is generally cloudy from November through January and there is the potential of snow sitting on the array (solar panels) for an extended period of time. Shading will affect the overall production and therefore the return on investment. However, it may be tolerable depending on the time of year and day. But, the trees do not have leaves during the winter. There is plenty of sun through the branches during the winter, says the eager homeowner. Photovoltaic systems are especially affected by any shading. Shade on a single photovoltaic cell in a module prevents the flow of electricity through at least a portion of it, if not all. A solar hot water collector is also affected by branch shading. These panels do have the potential to harvest heat if partially shaded since they absorb heat. However, if the collectors are completely covered with branch shading, one cannot expect any significant heating to occur. I observed this effect over the course of a couple of weeks riding my bike to work one winter. Snow and ice built up on the bicycle

path in Madison. During those weeks, we had many days with full sun. All of the ice and snow melted off the path except that in the branch shade of the crown of a large deciduous tree. The roof pitch and the compass direction the array faces south, east, west or somewhere in between will have an effect on the production of the systems. Ideally, the array would face directly south, whether it is a photovoltaic system or solar hot

Holistic recovery from eating disorders

By Carrie Decker, ND

ebruary 23 through March 1 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, a time to draw awareness to eating disorders and the importance of ongoing holistic recovery from the mental, emotional and physical manifestations of these illnesses. The field of naturopathic medicine focuses on holistic recovery from all types of illnesses, including eating disorders.

The theme of this years national eating disorder awareness week is I had no idea. Considering this, what is your awareness of the following facts?
I HAD NO IDEA. Eighty-one percent of 10-year-olds are afraid

of being fat.More than one-half of teenage girls and nearly onethird of teenage boys attempt to control weight by skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting and/or taking laxatives. More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese. Clearly, as a society, we are out of balance on both ends of the spectrum, and the populations that are affected include not only the stereotypical teenage female, but young and old, male and female alike.

Dr. Decker is now seeing patients in Madison, Fox Lake and Fond du Lac. Call 608-620-5831 for a free 5-minute consultation and to schedule your rst visit.

I HAD NO IDEA. Eating disorders include not only anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, but also binge-eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. For women between 15 and 24 with anorexia nervosa, the mortality rate associated with the illness is 12 times higher than all other causes of death. The binge and purge cycles associated with bulimia nervosa can cause electrolyte imbalances, leading to heartbeat irregularities and potentially heart failure. Binging and purging can lead to gastric rupture or esophageal bleeding, both of which also can cause death. Obesity, associated with binge-eating disorder, leads to increased risk of heart disease,Type 2 diabetes and cancer,as well as increased all-cause mortality. I HAD NO IDEA. Individuals with a history of an eating disorder may experience symptoms of digestive imbalance throughout their lives. Stress and anxiety associated with food or meal times further contribute to abnormal eating patterns and digestive dysfunction. Digestive dysfunction further contributes to mood disorders and is associated with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as physical symptoms of anemia, hypothyroid, poor immunity, fatigue, skin problems, chronic pain and so much more.

ders may experience dysregulated hormones. Dysregulated hypothalamic and pituitary signaling also may contribute to abnormal hormone levels and may be caused by food restricting and high stress states. Females with a history of eating disorders often have an abnormal or absent menstrual cycle and diminished fertility. Appropriate levels of hormones are necessary for healthy bones, skin and mood. The risk of osteoporosis due to low levels of sex hormones, high cortisol (stress hormone) and malnourishment in both females and males is considerably higher in individuals with a history of restrictive eating. Naturopaths work to treat each of these possible etiologies of bone loss when helping individuals decrease their risk of osteoporosis, and use nutritional and botanical supplements to support the restoration of a normal hormonal cycle and improve fertility.

water system. The roof pitch that produces the best annual production for a photovoltaic system is between 30 degrees and 36 degrees, or 7/12 to 9/12, while a 45-degree pitch, 12/12, is best for solar thermal. Most homes in this area have shallower roof pitches, which is just fine. A 4/12 pitch roof, 18 degrees, facing south is estimated to produce about 95 percent of an array on a 35-degree pitch roof. While you could tilt the array up, the added cost for materials and labor negates the marginal gain in production. As the array moves away from true south, production drops off by about 25 percent when facing straight east or west. This is a general rule, however, as it depends on the pitch of the roof. Shallow-pitch roofs will see less of an impact as they will be exposed to the sun longer in the day. The estimated production for an array on the west or east face of a 4/12 pitch roof is about 15 percent less than if facing south. A 9/12 pitch roof will see a reduction of about 25 percent. A solar professional will provide you with the estimated production of a system utilizing these factors. This information can be used to see if the project is cost effective for you.

I HAD NO IDEA.Depression, anxiety and/or obsessive compulsive disorder commonly co-exist in individuals with eating disorders. Treating these psychological imbalances is possible with herbal medicine and clinical nutrition. Genetic variations, particularly those associated with methylation, may lead to mood disorders and other health risks. Naturopaths perform testing for these genetic variations and neurotransmitter imbalances and use specific nutritional treatments to support imbalances. A healthy diet with a diverse spectrum of whole food and organic ingredients will promote a healthy weight and metabolism. Naturopathic support for ongoing recovery from eating disorders is a holistic approach utilizing herbs or nutritional supplements with clinical evidence for their ability to decrease stress, anxiety and depression, improve digestive wellness and nutritional status, and promote hormone balance and bone, skin and cardiovascular health.

A detox for Jane

heres no way to put this delicately, so Ill just come right out and say it: The other day I got a colonic. And you know what? It was awesome. Everything from the preliminary steps to the procedure itself to the soothing treatments afterwards the entire process was therapeutic and revitalizing. For that, I have the kind, knowledgeable and discreet staff at Hopewell Healing Center to thank. Let me back up a bit. I first found myself seeking the services of Hopewell to address some long-standing digestive issues. A wide range of food sensitivities and chronic constipation had left me feeling bloated, fatigued and irritable. Nobody wants that. On my first visit to Hopewell, Nicole, one of the practitioners there, explained to

me how many of us are living in a state of acidosis, but that for health and vitality, the body naturally craves a more alkaline state. She therefore sent me home with 3 gallons of alkaline mineral water and started me on a juice cleanse a juice feast, as she put it. She explained how I needed to change the water in my body, kind of like changing the oil in your car. For several days, I ate nothing and drank only fresh fruit and vegetable juices. I returned at the end of my cleanse for a day of detoxification at Hopewell. With all of the juice and water I had been drinking, I definitely felt hydrated, and far less heavy and bloated. However, I did experience several flu-like symptoms: I felt achy and sweaty, and had a slight headache. Dee Dee

Delkamp, owner and lead colon hydrotherapist at Hopewell, explained to me that this was normal after a cleanse. She told me that I was feeling my body releasing toxins. The next step was flushing out some more of those toxins. In other words, it was time for the colonic. Dee Dee led me into a small, dimly lit room. The atmosphere was quaint and very comfortable clean, but not clinical, as I was expecting. To be honest, I felt a little nervous. I was afraid the experience would be painful, and that I would be embarrassed, given the nature of the procedure. However, I was happy to find my fears unjustified. In fact, the whole thing was quite pleasant. I lay on my back, covered by a sheet to protect my privacy. When Dee Dee turned the water on, I discovered that it wasnt painful at all. The sensation was really just like the slight feeling of pressure you experience when you need to use the restroom. I would signal to Dee Dee when that pressure got to be just a little too much, and she would stop the flow for a few moments in order to allow me to release some of the water. The entire procedure lasted about 20 minutes. When it was through, I felt clean, outside and in. Whats more, my abdomen felt much trimmer a nice added bonus. After taking out some of the bad stuff, I was now ready to add in some of the good stuff. I started by lying down in a soothing vitamin D bed. It was warm and bright and very comfortable like a tanning bed, but without all the harmful rays. I learned from the staff that optimizing vitamin D can be one of the most important steps you can take toward creating overall good health and well-being.

What we do for love

By Rev. Deborah Phelps

n Valentines Day, we spend a lot of money on love. The National Retail Federation estimates that we spend around $18.6 million on cards, flowers, gifts and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. If money could buy love, wed be a nation of happy couples! Our hopes are high when it comes to romantic love, but who among us feels truly loved and secure, not just on Valentines Day, but on a consistent basis? Despite all that we do for love, could it be that were looking for it in the wrong places? Recently, the Rev. Sherri Rothenberger shared in an online study group the understanding of romantic love she had as a young woman. During her childhood, Sherri was often the target of her fathers anger, but she never understood why. Yet this same man was attentive and loving to his wife. Sherri could see that her father regarded her mother as beautiful and sexually attractive. So as Sherri matured, she came to believe that in order to be loved and safe from anger, she needed to make sure she was thin and beautiful. She believed that looking good to men was the key to satisfying her longing for love. Does any of this sound familiar? Lets be real. Our culture practically makes a religion out of being attractive to the opposite sex and seeking the perfect love relationship. What else could so many boxes of chocolates be about? For more than two decades, Sherris focus was on beauty, the perfect weight and the right relationship. Her worth came from how she looked and how her marriage was going. But even with all the exercise, weight control, nice clothes, romantic dinners and, yes, many heart-shaped boxes of Valentine Days chocolates, our dear Sherri still felt unhappy and insecure despite, ironically, having a great guy for a husband. She was, as we say, looking for love in all the wrong places. Why?

Mind over matter

By Jack A. Erb
am sure your have heard the term mind over matter, but what does that really mean? Well, it has lots of interpretations, but essentially it means that your mind can have a great effect on your body, spirit and overall functioning as a human being. Lets explore that a little more. Back in the early 1950s, a doctoral student by the name of Sir Roger Bannister set a British record in the 1,500-meter run, but did not win the medal he was seeking in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. He resolved then and there to run a

sub-four-minute mile, something no other human being had been able to do. With very little training and while practicing as a junior doctor, on May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England at the Iffey Road Track, he ran a time of 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds in competition. His record only lasted 46 days before someone else broke that four-minute barrier again. Within a few years, even high school students were shooting for that time and some breaking the four-minute time. Sir Roger was my hero during those years. No one in our school or conference was even breaking five minutes much less four minutes. I started training, running after chores on the farm in my boots. When I was a junior at Sun Prairie High School, the conference meet was upon us at Breeze Stevens Field in Madison. I was very nervous. I used starting blocks to get out to a fast start. No one else did that for the mile. They just started in a standing position. Crack! The starting pistol went off and I was out in front early and never looked back. I came across that finish line first with a time of 4 minutes and 46.4 seconds, all because of Sir Roger Bannister from Oxford, England. How weird is that? I qualified to run at the state track meet along with my classmate, Craig Thorpe. We had trained together and were the first two Sun Prairie students to qualify for the state meet in a very long time. I was able to do this because some other human being had gone before me.

Whats all this got to do with natural health? Youre only as healthy as you think. Your mind and attitude have a tremendous effect on your health. Those who beat cancer have a positive attitude and dont give up. You cannot lose the weight that you have been carrying around for years until you decide to. Have you ever said to yourself, I just cant lose weight? Well, you cant as long as you keep telling yourself that. W. Clement Stone (May 4, 1902 Sept. 3, 2002) was a businessman, philanthropist and New Thought self-help book author. In one of his books he wrote, Anything the mind of man can perceive and believe, he can achieve. This along with readings of Napoleon Hill changed my life at an early age. Its why I write these articles today. I believe I can help people by spreading the word of natural health through body, mind and spirit! Napoleon Hill quoted in his book, Think and Grow Rich, the following poem. I have committed this poem to memory and recite it frequently to myself when things are not going as planned. Here it is:

If you think youre outclassed, you are Youve got to think high to rise, Youve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. When I was through with the vitamin D bed, I then spent about 20 minutes in an infrared sauna, another pleasant experience. Far infrared (FIR) sauna therapy, I found out, is a safe, powerful way to eliminate toxic metals, chemicals and other infectious materials from your body. It can help with detoxification, weight loss, skin rejuvenation and muscle recovery, and is wonderfully relaxing all around. After the sauna, I enjoyed an invigorating wash in cool lavender water, the perfect way to end my detox. My aches and pains were gone, and the entire experience left me feeling calm, light and refreshed. Dee Dee pointed out to me that getting regular colonics can aid in the retraining of peristalsis. Those of us who suffer from chronic constipation can be relieved of these unfortunate difficulties with regular colon hydrotherapy, and can do so without the use of laxatives. Ive found this to be true. Its been several weeks now since my first procedure, and in that time Ive become a regular well, Ive become regular. I smiled at the fact that I had felt nervous before going in, considering how good I felt walking out. Before I left, Dee Dee told me of another service Hopewell Healing Center offers: Angela Rahm, a naturopathic MD, had recently purchased an iLipo machine for the center. (For more on iLipo treatments, see Angelas article in this months issue of Natures Pathways.) I learned that iLipo treatment has been found to be very effective in decreasing the bodys fat cells using lasers. I was intrigued, and I had really enjoyed my treatment at Hopewell. So I thought, why not? I signed up for a session. I came back to the clinic about a week later. I had my measurements taken, along with several photos. From there, I laid down on a padded table with electrodes attached to my abdomen. If this was strange at first, I forgot all about it as soon as Denise Wood began giving me a lymphatic massage. This type of massage, I learned, is a way of helping the body to release what are essentially melted fat molecules. With Denises amazing touch, I would have been happy just having the massage, without all the fat-burning. That is, until I was measured again after the procedure. I had lost 1 inches from my abdomen. I couldnt believe it: 1 inches. I hadnt thought I had that much extra around my middle to begin with, but Im certainly not going to complain about the results! While I would highly recommend Hopewells colon hydrotherapy and laser-lipo treatments, these services are only part of what the center has to offer. They also provide hair tissue mineral analysis, neurological and digestive testing, bodywork therapies and nutritional counseling. If youre looking to improve your mental or spiritual well-being, Hopewell offers classes on meditation and spiritual guidance, too. If it relates to wellness of body, mind or soul, Hopewell has something for it. Hopewell Healing Center has left me nothing but impressed with their services. The staff is wonderful and informative, the facility is comfortable and inviting, and the services leave you wondering how youd ever done without them in the first place. If youre feeling weighed down this winter and hoping for greater wellness, check out Hopewell Healing Center in Madison. Youll leave them feeling lighter.

Using hypnotherapy to stop smoking

By Dr. James E. Todd, Jr.

Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because Ive done it thousands of times. Mark Twain ccording to the American Lung Association, unfortunately every year in the U.S., more than 392,000 people die from tobacco-caused diseases, making it the leading cause of preventable death. Another 50,000 people die from exposure to secondhand smoke. Tragically,

each day thousands of kids still pick up a cigarette for the first time. If smoking is so harmful why do we do it? Here are some of the reasons people start smoking: On a dare to show that you are not timid or afraid. To fit with the crowd (all my friends do it). To appear sophisticated or cool. To be grown-up. As a sign of protest, rebellion or defiance of authority. To calm your nerves. Most people continue smoking out of habit. They light a cigarette without even thinking. But sometimes, people smoke under specific situations as a kind of a ritual. The mere sight of a cup of coffee or one drink of alcohol will cause you to reach for your cigarettes without any conscious thought. Seeing friends smoking cigarettes, watching movies where the actors smoke or the smell of cigarette smoke may trigger the psychological desire to smoke. Some other common reasons include reducing feelings of anxiety or nervousness and calming down when upset or angry. Can hypnosis help me stop smoking? Hypnotherapy has enjoyed a high success rate with smoking cessation. The desire to stop smoking is one of the most common reasons why people consult

hypnotherapists. When quitting smoking, it is best not to dwell on negative aspects such as ill health, but instead to aim for positive outcomes such as good health, fitness, freedom and energy. The application of hypnotherapy for stopping smoking has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to quit the habit. Compared to drug therapy used to stop smoking, Frank Schmidt and research student Chockalingham Viswesvaran from the University of Iowa used a meta-analysis, utilizing the results of more than 600 studies totaling nearly 72,000 people. The results, which were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology and included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6,000 smokers, clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than drug therapy. This is due to the power of the mind. Many times a smoker will go without a cigarette for a length of time, provided that the reason for not smoking is justified within the mind. Being on a long-distance flight, being in a restaurant where smoking is forbidden or being asleep at night are examples of justified reasons. If you think that stopping smoking is depriving you of something, then it is just a matter of time until you start again. Hypnotherapy is ideal for this. Using hypnosis, you can deal with all of the emotional and psychological aspects of giving up smoking.
www.naturespathways.com

The mind has an ability to take an alternative route of thought and feeling, which replaces the need for a cigarette. This all comes from within. When we find a conscious justifiable reason to stop smoking, by using hypnosis to access the subconscious mind where cravings are generated, we are able to find alternative ways that will relieve the desire to smoke. Quitting smoking should not be overly difficult or unpleasant. Granted, nicotine is a difficult substance to go without when giving up smoking, but after a few days it is out of your system. Most smokers agree that quitting smoking for a few days is difficult but very achievable. Hypnosis is not the mind control technique that is often represented on TV and in the media. In fact, you cannot make people do anything using hypnosis. Quite the opposite: If someone doesnt want to stop smoking, they will be even more definite about that in hypnosis. Did you realize people can lie in hypnosis as easily as they can out of hypnosis? People can stop smoking in as little as one session. A stop-smoking consultation with a hypnotherapist will generally involve gathering information about your personal reasons for wanting to quit. The smoking cessation session or sessions will include hypnotherapy techniques, positive affirmations, visual imagery, suggestions and possibly other techniques the hypnotherapist feels will benefit you. Many hypnotherapists will include a copy of your session for you to listen to, further strengthening the changes made. The cost of a hypnotherapy session for stopping smoking will be minimal compared to the financial and health costs incurred during a lifetime of smoking. And as a bonus, a smoking cessation session is tax deductible!

HAT WE DO FOR LOVE W continued from page 63

Like most of us, she was looking outside for love, not inside. Sherris story shows why we need to change whats in our minds, not our bodies or what we see in the world. Its not about form our bodies, our marital status, our growing pile of empty chocolate boxes and Valentines Day cards. Sorry, Hallmark! Its about content, or what is in our minds our beliefs and thoughts. It was only when Sherri began to challenge her beliefs and to seek peace within that she started to feel truly safe, loved and cherished. It was only the inner peace that is in the mind that provided the unchanging solace and security shed been seeking. As she released old beliefs and sought inner peace, Sherris need to look outside for her worth diminished. Heres a short exercise called Feel Love Within to help you tap into that inner peace. Close your eyes and take three deep, slow breaths. Still your mind by laying aside everything you have learned about love. Be willing to be open to divine love within. Say to yourself slowly: Love created me. Love is everything I am. I am

always surrounded by love. I feel Gods love within me now. Hold each thought for at least 30 seconds. Allow yourself to feel connected, heard and loved. Rest in stillness while you ponder the meaning of each phrase. When youre finished, you might want to journal your thoughts and experiences. This little exercise can facilitate big changes. If you do it consistently, even daily, you strengthen your awareness of the peace and love already within you. After all, love created us like itself. Raising this truth to awareness again and again weakens the fearful ego self that compels us to seek love outside. Honey, it aint out there! Love is within. Only when were in touch with that can we truly extend love to others. Otherwise, well feel insecure and alone, even with a partner, even if we receive a heart-shaped box of chocolates.
