FORMAT OF WORKING PAPERS Game Design for Fun and Learning _______________________ SEECS-NUST Background

FORM-2 (New Course)

1. Currently there is no course offered at SEECS with similar objectives and content. This is a new course that will help students learn the use of games for education. The details are given under the heading Rationale. Rationale 2. Educational Entertainment (Edutainment) is defined as any entertainment content that is designed to educate and train as well as to entertain. This term was first used by the Walt Disney Company in early 1948. Since then we have seen many games and movies that have been produced for edutainment. Such entertainment material, often games, are designed to have fun while learning and training. Such games are also termed as "Games with a Purpose" and "Serious Games". Edutainment is being used in a variety of fields. As an example 3D games built around discovering and extracting oil have been used to train workforce to work in oil and gas fields. Edutainment Apps like Alchemy and Kids Zoo - 3D Animated Animals are designed to teach combination of elements and animal names to kids in a fun way. University of Oregon has a role playing game called "Reacting to the past" that is used by history students. In this role playing game they can assume a character from the history and get involved in debate with other characters from the same era. "Cool it" is an interactive engineering game designed by University of Winsconsin to teach cryogenics. In this course we will look at the components of games with purpose or edutainment software. This will greatly enhance the ability of teachers to communicate with their students and help them learn in a fun way and at their own pace. Educational Objectives 3.The objectives of this course are:

To develop the understanding of game development To study how can learning be mixed with games To develop an understanding of the process to create games with a purpose
