HOME LEARNING AWARD 2014 Term 1

Learning occurs 24 / 7. Many of you are involved in a variety of learning activities that occur outside of Room 23. This Award is a fantastic opportunity for you to record and share all the learning that you are involved in, whether it is during school / after school / the weekend or during the holidays.
Grading Mark Excellence Criteria - Completed at least 15 challenges (2 from each section) - Activities are recorded to provide in-depth details of the challenge. - The activities completed meet the requirements of the challenge. - Completed at least 10 challenges (1 from each section) - Activities are recorded to provide in-depth details of the challenge. - The activities completed meet the requirements of the challenge. - Completed at least 7 challenges - Activities provide details of the challenge - The activities completed meet some of the requirements of the challenge. - Completed less than 7 challenges - Activities provide details of the challenge - The activities completed meet some of the requirements of the challenge.

The activities you choose to complete for this Home Learning Challenge need to be summarised and presented in this clear file. You will need to draft and edit your work (This is evidence of the work involved) before publishing what you did. Be concise and thorough with your recording so it is clear to the reader what your challenge was and how you fared.

Our 2014 Home Learning Challenges are as follows:


Section 1 - ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Compulsory (Home Learning Book) 1. Basic Facts Challenge: Complete the basic facts challenge for Term 1.
2. Leisure Reading Challenge: Keep a log of all the books you will read over the term. 3. Word-study: Learn your weekly spelling list. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Optional 4. Be an Author: Contribute a piece of writing for the class blog / school newsletter 5. Reading Review: Read and promote a novel to the class, encourage others to read this book. 6. Apps: Use and promote an application that was helpful in your learning. 7. Design your own challenge:

Section 2 - PERSONAL AND SERVICE CHALLENGES


1. Give to your family; Cook a two-course meal. Record the menu for your meal, photograph the meals and record feedback from your guests.

2. Give your skills to help others; Use a skill you have to help an individual or group in the community. E.g. Umpiring or coaching a sports team, walking a dog, baking, gardening etc. 3. Home Environment; Complete a new household tasks, such as making your own bed, collecting the newspaper, emptying the dishwasher This is additional to your expected duties at home.

4. Paid Employment: Describe a job you have. Who / What / Where / How / Why / Time Commitments 5. Leadership: Show leadership through house sports, school council, scouts, youth group 6. Classroom Responsibility: Contribute to Room 23, complete a responsibility for term 1. 7. Design your own challenge:

Section 3 - PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND THE OUTDOORS


1. Improve your fitness: Over a five week period run / bike / scooter or walk. Measure and record the distance that you cover. 2. Fitness Challenge: Swim non-stop for at least 600m (Swim Club Expectation 1000m) or run non-stop for at least 5 km. 3. Juggling: Aim to master the art of juggling, 2, 3 or even 4 balls at a time. Keep a diary of your journey. 4. Compete in a sport: This can be either a school sports team or for a club. 5. Explore the outdoors: With a family member or family friend - Complete an overnight tramp / hunting and fishing adventure - Camp out for at least 1 night. 6. Represent a sport at a Regional Level - (Metro / Otago): Summarise the commitments you have for this achievement. 7. Design your own challenge:

Section 4 - GREEN FINGERS Aim to complete the below challenges for at least a 2 week period 1. Feet First - Walk or bike to school. If travelling by car / bus then you can get dropped off 1 block from school / home. 2. Lunchbox - Use a zip lock bag / container, each day, in your lunch box. 3. Recycling - Focus on using your wheelie bin when recycling at home. 4. Shower - Limit your shower/s to a max of 10 minutes! 5. Teeth - When brushing your teeth, turn off the tap! 6. Eco-bags - Use eco-bags at the supermarket or refuse a plastic bag when shopping. 7. Water Bottle - Reuse a water bottle 8. Design your own challenge:

EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS Create and exhibit a piece of art work. Painting / Sculpture / Sketching Present a performance to a class: Playing an instrument, singing a song, performing a dance Learn a musical instrument. Summarise the details of the learning you did for this term. Participate in a Performing Arts Group: Dance / Drama / Theatre Improve your confidence and skills: Prepare and present a speech on a topic of your choice to the class. Participate in the School Choir / Special Choir/ Kapahaka attending all rehearsals and performances. Design your own challenge:
