Geography and Climate

The geography of the Sochi, Russia is quite unique. It is one of the only spots in the area that
has varied geographic sites. The main portions of the City of Sochi are on the coast of the Black
Sea, but it is also nestled in the Caucasus Mountains as well. Over the long and storied history
of Sochi and the area around it, the city has always remained a resort destination for not only
Russians, but also Europeans.
Because of the varied terrain and protections of the mountains close by, the climate is usually
humid subtropical at its lower elevations that rarely dips below freezing. This is then coupled
with the Caucasus Mountains and you have a perfect place to practice winter sports in the
mountain resorts and sports parks.

The Olympic Flag
The Olympic Flag is a white flag with the Olympic rings symbol on it. The five interlaced rings
signify the five inhabited continents of the world, united by Olympism. The five colors of the
rings and the white background are important because every flag in the world has at least one
of these six colors incorporated into it.

The Olympic Torch and Flame

The History of the Olympic Torch and Flame
The Olympic Torch today is ignited well in advance of the start of the Olympic Games. The
Olympic Torch is ignited in Olympia, Greece at the site of the ancient Olympic Games. There is a
special ceremony at the ancient Temple of Hera at which the Olympic Torch is started by the
power of the sun by using a parabolic mirror. The Olympic Torch then travels from Athens,
Greece to the site of the Olympic Games. After being initially lit, the Olympic Flame remains
burning throughout the Games, until the closing ceremony and celebration, when it is finally
officially put out in a special ceremony.
Interesting Olympic Torch Facts
The Olympic Torch is usually carried by runners and handed off from one runner to the next
in a long human relay.
The Olympic torch has travelled by boat to cross the English Channel.
The Olympic Torch was carried in an airplane in 1952.
The Olympic Torch was carried by equestrian only in 1956.
The Olympic Torch traveled by radio wave from Athens via a satellite to Canada in 1976.
The Olympic Torch dove the Great Barrier Reef in 2000.
During the 2004 Olympics, the Olympic Torch travelled the entire globe through the hands
of about 11,300 torchbearers and travelled roughly 78,000 km (49,000 miles) as it travelled
on all the continents.
The Olympic Cauldron has been lit by a lot of different methods including burning arrows,
ski jumpers, running through it, multiple lighters, and intricate dance routines.
As the Olympic Torch takes its journey there are back-up copies close at hand to re-light any
Olympic Torches that accidentally go out.
The Olympic Cauldron is almost always intricate, beautiful, ornate, and specifically designed
by the host Country to make it unique.
For the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Olympic Flame was taken up and back to the
International Space Station by Russian Cosmonauts.

With the assistance of your parent or teacher, research the path the Olympic Torch has taken to get to the 2014 Winter Olympic
Games in Sochi, Russia and do your best to recreate it below.

The Olympic Medals

Olympic Medals are award to the three winners in each event. The first place finisher receives a
gold medal, the second place finisher receives a silver medal, and the third place finisher
receives a bronze medal.
Each Olympic Games hosting country gets to place their own spin on medals that are given out,
but they must all conform to a minimum standard. The minimum standards for Olympic Medals
are:
The top three competitors in each event receive medals.
The shape is usually circular and attached by a chain or ribbon.
Minimum diameter is 60 mm (2.4 inches).
Minimum thickness is 3 mm (0.12 inches).
First place composition: silver covered with 6 grams of gold.
Second place composition: silver (no gold)
Third place: copper, tin, zinc (worth about $3.00)

In Sochi, some medals will include part of a meteorite.
Some Olympic Games also awarded participant medals to all athletes, but that is up to the
hosting country.

The Winter Olympics

Summary
The 2014 Winter Olympics are the 22nd Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympics take place every
4 years and are set two years apart from the Summer Olympics. The 2014 Winter Olympics will
consist of 98 events in 15 different winter sports and will be hosted by Russia in the City of
Sochi. This is the first time that Russia will be hosting the Winter Olympics.
Winter Olympics History

The Winter Olympic Games is a major sporting event that is international. The first Winter
Olympic Games was held in Chamonix, France in 1924. The original winter sports were Alpine,
Cross-Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, and Speed
Skating. The Winter Olympics have been held every four years since 1924 and were interrupted
by World War II, but resumed in 1948. Until 1992 the Winter and Summer Olympic Games were
held in the same years. The Winter Olympics in 1992 and 1994 set the four year cycle for the
Winter Olympics to hold them in opposite 2-year tracks from the Summer Olympics.
Interesting Winter Olympics Facts
The Winter Olympics have been hosted on three continents, but never in the Southern
Hemisphere.
The United States has hosted the Winter Olympics four times.
France has hosted the Winter Olympics three times.
Austria, Canada, Japan, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland has hosted the Winter Olympics two
times each.
Russia will host the Winter Olympics for the first time in 2014.
12 countries have attended every Winter Olympic Games (Austria, Canada, Finland, France,
Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and U.S.A.)
6 countries have medaled in each Winter Olympic Games (Austria, Canada, Finland,
Norway, Sweden, and U.S.A.)

The first Olympics to have Alpine Skiing was in 1936 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The only part
of the current version of this event to be hosted that year was the downhill and slalom.

The Latin root of the Biathlon is literally two contests. This event combines skiing and shooting.
This event was first seen at the 1948 Winter Games in St. Mortiz as a demonstration sport. The
first version seen was designed to include a lot of different events inspired by the pentathlon of
the Summer Games. It was first included as an event at the 1960 Winter Games at Squaw
Valley. Until 1976 the event was only the individual and relay race. In 2002 the 12.5 km pursuit
for men and 10 km pursuit for women was introduced. In 2006 the latest event, the mass start
was introduced for men and women.

The sport of Bobsleigh did not come to fruition until the late 19 th century. The original
bobsleighs we simply two skeleton sleds lashed together with the addition of a steering
mechanism to make it a toboggan. Chassis were soon added to the sleighs to protect tourist,
spectators, and the riders. Weight rules were added in the 1950s to convert the sport from an
engineering emphasis to an athletic one. The Winter Games events did not start until 1924 for
the four-man event. In 1932 the two-man event was introduced at Lake Placid. The two-woman
event was added in 2002.

The sport of Cross-Country Skiing was first seen as an Olympic Event in 1924. Skiing has long
been a mode of transportation for much of the snow covered regions of Europe. The mens
event debuted in 1924 at the Chamonix Games and womens debuted in 1952 at the Oslo
Games. Traditionally this event is dominated by Nordic countries where they have been skiing
for sport since the 18th century.

The sport of Curly has deep roots in Scotland and ranges back to the 16 th century where winter
games were played on frozen ponds and lochs. The earliest curling stones date back to the early
1500s and curling stones with handles started appearing in the 1600s. Curling has been on and
off the Winter Games schedule since it was first demonstrated in 1924 in Chamonix. It officially
became an event at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano.

Figure Skating is the oldest sport on the Winter Olympics schedule. The Dutch are arguably the
earliest pioneers and competitors in figure skating. Dutch people skated on frozen canals to
communicate with adjacent villages in the 13th century. It spread from there and gained
popularity as a sport and recreational activity throughout Europe. As a sport, it was first seen in
1908 in London and then again in 1920 at the Antwerp Games. Until 1972 the mens, womens,
and pairs figure skating had been included in the Winter Games and in 1976 ice dancing was
added.

This Winter Olympic sport has its roots in hot-dogging due to the somersaults, tricks, and other
fantastic feats its Olympians perform. This event was slowly introduced into the Winter
Olympics. It was first demonstrated at the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary. In 1992 at Albertville
moguls became a medal event. Then, in 1994 at Lillehammer saw aerials become a medal
event. The Ski Cross made its debut at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Ice Hockey originated in Canada and started in the early 19th century. The sport developed over
the years and started using a stick with a ball. In 1860 a puck was introduced instead of the ball.
Rules were officially created in 1879. Six-a-side mens ice hockey was introduced as an Olympic
Sport at the 1924 Chamonix Games and has been included since then. Womens hockey was
debuted as a medal event at the 1998 Nagano Games. Oddly enough, Canada dominated this
event the first few Olympic Games and then the teams from the Soviet Union dominated for
most of the rest of the games.

Luge made its Olympic debut at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Games. Competitors compete
individually or as a team. The teams can be men and women, but are traditionally only men.

The sport of Nordic Combined has a long Olympic history and combines ski jumping and crosscountry skiing. Nordic Combined has been included in every Winter Olympics since the 1924
Chamonix Games. This is another sport mostly dominated by Nordic countries. It was not until
the 1960 Squaw Valley Games that another country won a Gold in the event.

In the event of Short Track Speed Skating, Olympians compete not against a clock, but instead
against each other. This is a change from other events in that you just need to outrace the
other contestants in each race and your time does not matter as much. Short track speed
skating was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Calgary Games and was introduced as a medal
event at the Albertville Games in 1992. The short track features rapid races with a mass of
racers. This can lead to spectacular races and brilliant collisions and falls.

Skeleton involves racing head first down a steep ice track on a very tiny sled. This is the first
sliding event. This event was an on again, off again event and was made permanent at the Salt
Lake Games in 2002. This event is one of the most dangerous events that constantly has racers
getting injured as they slid down the steep ice track, racing against the clock.

Ski Jumping has been part of the Olympic Games since the 1924 Chamonix Games. The normal
hill competition was introduced at the 1964 Innsbruck Games and the Team event was first
seen at the 1988 Calgary Games.

Snowboard Cross
Snowboarding combines skills from surfing, skateboarding, and skiing. Snowboarding made its
debut at the 1998 Nagano Games. Snowboarding originated in the United States in the 1960s as
people began to seek out new winter sports to have fun with. In the 1970s, snowboarders
were often seen invading ski resorts. Since the Olympic debut of snowboard was so well
received at the 1998 Nagano Games, it immediately returned and has been expanded.

Speed Skating began as a rapid form of transportation across frozen lakes and rivers in Europe.
It made its Olympic Games debut at the 1924 Chamonix Games as a mens sport. Womens
Speed Skating was introduced at the 1932 Lake Placid Games and became a medal event at the
1960 Squaw Valley Games.

Lets Play Our Own Olympic Sport
Do you have what it takes to be a Winter Olympics Olympian?

The Winter Olympics consist of sports that are only accessible to people that are living or
visiting a place in the world that has snow and winter conditions. Each event consists of special
rules, dedicated safety equipment, professional judges, and talented competitors.
Lets have some fun of our own. For physical education credit, lets play some Winter Olympic
Themed fun games of our own. These are intended to be played under adult supervision, so
please make sure to have a parent or teachers permission and supervision during your games.
In order to play, gather the materials on the next few pages, set-up the events, and have a fun
time competing in your own events! Cut out each pair of cards and glue them together, backto-back to make an event card. Feel free to make up your own as well with the provided blank
card.
A competitor starts at the start line with a Nerf Gun and

16 darts. The gun should be unloaded. They are to run
to the first target station and take up to two shots at
each target. Once all the stations ammunition (4 darts
total) is used up or both targets are knocked down the
competitor then runs to the next station. Once a
competitor starts they can load their ammunition as
needed while on the course. Once you start you are
timed until you cross the finish line.
Each competitors score shall be calculated as follows:

place on. Select 4 places to be target stations and setup up 2 targets at each station. Define a start and finish

Competitors are timed as they run the course with their

lawn skis on. Competitors are disqualified if they
intentionally remove their lawn skis.

My Olympic Medal Tracking Book

To track the medals that are being won at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi,
Russia, please cut out the cover page below and as many Medal Count tracking
pages as countries that earn medals. I intend to start my children off with 15
pages (30 countries). Then, watch the 2014 Winter Olympics. As a Country earns
a medal, cut out its flag from the pages provided and glue it onto a Medal
Tracking Page. Use the space provided to tally up the number of medals each
country earns. Dont forget to also list the winners out on the individual sports
medal sheets too.
I intend to bind 2014 Medal Tracking Books together by the countries in
alphabetical order and attach them with yarn through the provided spot holepunched on each page, but feel free to do it how you wish.

The top three competitors in each event receive medals.

The shape is usually circular and attached by a chain or ribbon.

Minimum diameter is 60 mm (2.4 inches).

Minimum thickness is 3 mm (0.12 inches).

First place composition: silver covered with 6 grams of gold.

Second place composition: silver (no gold)

Third place: copper, tin, zinc (worth about $3.00)
