JOSEPH KUSHNER HEBREW ACADEMY

An Investment That Lasts a Lifetime

Why choose a Jewish day school education for my child? Selecting your childs school is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. By choosing Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy, you are choosing classes that feature low student-faculty ratios, outstanding teachers in a warm, caring environment, and a strong educational foundation in both secular and Judaic studies. As children progress from learning the alef-bet in pre-Kindergarten to reading Rashi in third grade and then delving into Mishna by fifth grade, they absorb Torah learning and values on a daily basis. No other educational experience can come close to imparting the richness, breadth and depth of Jewish learning and tradition. An investment in day school education is an investment in your childs Jewish future. Studies by The Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) have found that by the time they enter adulthood, those who received a day school education are significantly less likely to intermarry; more likely to belong to a synagogue; are much more attached to Israel; and consider being Jewish a more important component of their lives than those who received a less intensive Jewish education. Other studies have found that Jewish day school graduates have a strong sense of responsibility towards the needs of society and are more likely to volunteer their time to help others in need. They are also more resistant to social pressures that lead to risky behaviors than their public and private school peers. They have empathy and integrity based on Jewish values. Will my child receive a balanced education? Yes, absolutely. The Modern Orthodox philosophy of Torah UMaddah recognizes the importance of a well-rounded, strong foundation in science, mathematics, literature, social studies and the arts in shaping Torahobservant adults who live and work in the modern world. JKHA enhances traditional hands-on teaching methods with state-of-the-art technology. Our Lower and Middle School graduates are well-prepared for high school, and our High School graduates have been admitted into the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation. JKHA students obtain all the knowledge and values needed to become productive members of our global community in an environment that nurtures their personal, academic and social development. Can we afford the cost of a day school education? Yes, you can! At JKHA we believe that every child is entitled to a Jewish education. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated fundraisers and many supporters, we are proud to be able to subsidize every students tuition at JKHA, regardless of need. We offer Tuition Assistance to qualifying families, while others benefit from the Tuition Subvention Program made possible by generous donors to the MetroWest Day School Campaign for Academic Excellence and Affordability, who believe as passionately as we do that the education of Jewish children is crucial to the future of the Jewish people. Read on to learn how a day school education is within reach of every family.

Financial Assistance
At Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy, we believe that a Jewish education is a vital investment in your childs future; however, we also understand that tuition requirements place a sizable burden upon many of our families. Just as we are dedicated to providing an outstanding education in both secular and Judaic studies to our students, we are equally committed to working with families to achieve an agreeable financial outcome. We offer several payment options, including a single-payment plan, a semi-annual payment plan, and a ten-month payment plan. At JKHA, there are two types of financial assistance available: Tuition Assistance and Tuition Subvention Grants. TUITION ASSISTANCE
Eligibility for Tuition Assistance is based on demonstrated need. Families meeting established criteria reviewed by our Financial Assistance Committee are awarded Tuition Assistance for the upcoming academic year. Please note that all families must apply annually for Tuition Assistance. Applications are due no later than April 30, 2014.

TUITION SUBVENTION GRANTS

Eligibility for Tuition Subvention is based on family income and the number of children in the family attending a Yeshiva. Families not receiving Tuition Assistance are eligible to apply for a Tuition Subvention Grant. Grants range from one thousand to ten thousand dollars per family per academic year. This grant program was launched under the leadership of Paula and Jerry Gottesman and through generous donors to the Greater MetroWest Day School Campaign for Academic Excellence and Affordability. Applications are due no later than May 31, 2014.

Committee Decisions and Timing

The Financial Assistance Committee works to evaluate each individual familys ability to meet tuition payments in a fair, consistent and equitable way. All information is kept confidential. Financial Assistance award decisions begin in late April in each year. Tuition Subvention awards are extended in mid-June.

a message from the office of institutional advancement

BUILDING CAPACITY THROUGH INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT In addition to the welcomed assistance our school receives from the Greater MetroWest Day School Initiative, our school benefits from the work of the Department of Institutional Advancement, whose mission is to help guide, identify and leverage desperately needed financial support for our school and for its programs and services. The work of our Advancement Department is crucial, in light of the everincreasing costs for educating a student in our school, coupled with increased requests for financial aid and our schools commitment to ensuring high-quality education. We are committed to creating and ensuring philanthropic partnerships with members of our community, parents and supporters who share our mission and vision, and who are passionately committed to ensuring educational excellence. We work to ensure concerted donor recognition, cultivation and engagement. Critical to this challenge is our ability and capacity, in partnership with our Board of Trustees, to promote, support and inspire philanthropic giving to our institution through our annual dinner, the ATID SOCIETY, and through other creative and innovative philanthropic engagements and venues such as a Super Bowl raffle and online auction. Our department also works with our over 1700 alumni to engage and inspire them, and keep them connected through email campaigns, reunions, and targeted events. Our alumni are our advocates, our ambassadors, and our supporters. We strive to create the right environments in our school and in our community that will help ensure short-term, mid-term and long-term financial affordability, sustainability and investmentand at the same time raise the necessary resources required to ensure our continued and unswerving commitment to educational excellence in both Judaic and secular studies. Greater MetroWest Day

Investing in Affordability and Academic Excellence
We know that of the many factors that help decide where your child attends day school, academic excellence and affordability are among the most important. Our school benefits from the Greater MetroWest Day School Initiative, a collaborative investment by community donors, The Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, and Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest. This ground-breaking, nationally renowned initiative enhances the academic excellence of our school for every educator, and every learner, and makes the day school experience more affordable for families. How does the Greater MetroWest Day School Initiative make a difference? Through a long-term, multi-year investment of millions of dollars, as well as strategic, collaborative planning by three diverse Jewish day schools, including ours, this initiative is impacting these areas: Excellence, Affordability, and Sustainability.

Excellence
Our school has enhanced excellence programs because we are part of Greater MetroWest. Investment in teachers: Excellent teachers and academic excellence go hand-in-hand. Our community is investing $1 million into professional development for teachers through The Quest for Teaching Excellence program. Teachers from across the community also gather in a teach-in to share best practices. Investment in science and technology: Grants support the latest technology and science equipment, including SmartBoards, iPads, laptops and greenhouses. Our teachers are trained to use them, and are trained in advanced scientific techniques for teaching, with help from the Greater MetroWest Day School Initiative. Investment in Israel Education: Developing and enhancing strong connections to Israel is a fundamental tenet of our school. Grants support expanded Israel education through bringing Israeli ambassadorspassionate and energetic Israeli young adultsto the schools, as well as supplementing the cost of student trips to Israel. We help bring Israel to our students, and our students to Israel.

Affordability

Our school is a more affordable Jewish day school because we are part of Greater MetroWest. Middle Income Grants: Each year, hundreds of children in Greater MetroWest receive middle income grants so that they can attend Jewish day school. Our community was among the first in the nation to develop middle income tuition grant programs to help families squeezed in the middlethose who would not qualify for traditional scholarships, but for whom the cost of tuition is too great a burden.

AFFORDABILITY

School Initiative
Sustainability
Our community is investing in our school to secure a stronger Jewish future. Building Endowments: Our day schools are among the first in the nation to develop comprehensive endowment development programs to help build greater affordability and excellence today and to help ensure strong, sustainable Jewish day schools for generations. Building Stronger Ties to Alumni: Our schools are engaging alumni leaders to build vital relationships, adding value to the lives of current and former students by strengthening these connections.

Our school is stronger because we are part of Greater MetroWest.

One Parents Story

My hope was to see my son at a Jewish Day School where he could be surrounded by peers who have the same values we taught him at home. But thenreality hit hard! My husband and I earn a decent income, but the tuition was rather staggering. My wish was to give my son the best possible Jewish day school experience and I knew that this school was the perfect match for him, but the finances were problematic. Through the generosity of the MetroWest Day School Initiative, the subvention grant eased our financial concerns enough to make it possible for us to send our son to a school where the nurturing environment is fostering knowledgeable, caring, loving and committed Jews. This grant program has lessened the tuition burden of those of us in the financial middle and without it, a Jewish day school education would be inaccessible. I want to personally thank the MetroWest Day School Initiative for its vision and commitment to keeping my kids, and many other Jewish kids sitting at their desks in classrooms at a Jewish day school, vibrant participants in a place of learning and blessing.

Tuition and fees at JKHA cover only a portion of the real cost of educating each child. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated fundraisers and many supporters, we are proud to be able to subsidize every students tuition at JKHA, regardless of need.
