General Specification 541-2-3 TITLE: NON-OILED SAND CUSHIONS FOR CARBON STEEL TANKS 0.1 Page No. 1 of 2 Rev No. Mar 04

Scope: All materials, equipment and services required for furnishing and installing the sand cushion shall be provided in compliance with this General Specification, the Project Specification that precedes this General Specification, and with the contract drawings. This specification is limited to non-oiled sand cushions under ambient-temperature, flat bottom carbon steel tanks. Sand cushions with a nominal thickness of greater than 4" are considered thick sand cushions, and must comply with the requirements of Section 3.0 of this specification. The contract drawings and the Project Specifications designate the sand cushion thickness, and whether the cushion is to be oil impregnated.

1.0 1.1

MATERIALS: Sand: The sand used in the cushion shall be clean, non-plastic and free flowing. All of the sand shall pass the 3/4" sieve, at least 95% shall pass the 3/8" sieve, and no more than 10% shall pass the #200 sieve. The sand shall be free from vegetable matter, balls of clay, lumps of earth, and material corrosive to steel. The maximum chloride content of the sand shall be 0.05% (500 parts per million). Water: Water added for compaction of cushions shall be potable. PLACEMENT OF CUSHIONS LESS THAN 4 THICK: The procedures used in placing the sand cushion shall not result in the subgrade being loosened or in portions of the subgrade being worked into the sand cushion. If the base material on which the cushion is to be placed is a course stone or gravel with voids, the first lift of the sand cushion shall be limited to 2" thickness. This lift shall be worked so as to fill the voids in the underlying stone or gravel.

1.2

2.0

2.1

Final Grading of Cushions Less Than 4 Thick: The cushion shall be well-compacted, free of voids and accurately graded within the tolerances shown on the contract drawings. Upon completion, the subcontractor responsible for this portion of the work shall leave a stock pile of the sand used for the cushion. (This will be used for any minor adjustments or repairs to the grade immediately prior to and during construction of the tank.)

General Specification 541-2-3 TITLE: NON-OILED SAND CUSHIONS FOR CARBON STEEL TANKS 3.0 Page No. 2 of 2 Rev No. Mar 04

PLACEMENT OF THICK CUSHIONS GREATER THAN 4 THICK: The procedures for placing the cushion shall not result in the subgrade being loosened or in portions of the subgrade material being worked into the sand cushion. If the subgrade is course stone or gravel with voids, the first sand layer shall be limited to 2" in thickness. This sand shall be worked so as to fill the voids in the underlying stone or gravel. Subsequent sand layers up to the theoretical centerline of any embeds shall be in lifts not exceeding 6" in thickness and shall be compacted by a minimum of three passes of a vibratory compactor. To assist sand compaction, potable water may be applied at an approximate rate of 1/2 to 1 gallon per square foot of surface area for a 10" thick cushion. The amount of water to be applied will depend on the initial amount of water in the sand and on environmental factors which affect loss of moisture from the sand. Excessive wetting of the cushion should be avoided. As a guideline, the amount of water used should be that amount which causes the sand to stick together in an intact mass when squeezed in the hand. A minimum of 2" of sand shall be placed over any embeds before additional compaction is performed. Compaction shall proceed with vibratory compactor of a type and weight that will not damage the embedded items.

3.1

Final Grading of Thick Cushions Greater Than 4 Thick: Thick sand cushions shall be well-compacted and accurately graded to the following tolerance. Tolerance: "The sand cushion shall not vary from the shape shown on the contract drawings by more than 1/2" in 10' as determined by a 10' straight-edge anywhere on the cushion in any direction". Extra care shall be used when compacting the sand next to the ringwall and pipe vaults. After compaction, the sand cushion adjacent to the ringwall and vault walls must be at or slightly above the concrete. Upon completion, the Subcontractor responsible for this portion of the work shall leave a stock pile of sand used for the cushion. (This sand will be used for any minor adjustments or repairs to the grade immediately prior to and during installation of the vapor barrier or placement of the outer tank bottom).
